I've heard rave reviews of Krista's for some time now and was really looking forward to my first experience there last night. The good news is that the reviews are legit: this place is wonderful and I look forward to going back there again. So if you're debating whether to go to Krista's and come across this review, my simple message is "go".
Now, for the more detailed review...
The place and ambience: love it. Very comfortable and classy place. The room we were in had all of these colored lanterns giving it a tastefully retro look. The whole table loved it.
The service: exceptional. Everyone from the hostess, to the waitress to the bartender was very friendly and accommodating. Our waitress, Lindsay (sp?), went the extra mile to bring us samples to ensure we were ordering something we would love. When you walk in and out of the restaurant, EVERYONE welcomes you and wishes you goodbye. You feel appreciated.
Drinks: I'm a simple guy and like a Bone-Dry Manhattan. The bartender made a point of double-checking my preferences with me and nailed it. My sister and mother ordered a couple of sidecars. They needed to order a separate shot of cognac to pour in to bring it to perfect, but they are connoisseurs and know what a perfect sidecar tastes like. The kids loved the option to mix and match "Italian soda" flavors to make their own customized drink. That was a big hit.
Every appetizer we've had (everyone else in my party had been here 3 times) are excellent. This round we had the stuffed mushrooms, the Thai mussels and the jerk chicken wings. We also got the cheesy-chips for the kids. The sauces for the mussels and wings were great and left a lasting impression. The mushrooms are served on a pan-fried parmesan cheese chip and they went fast. The chips also didn't last long.
My niece got a tomato bisque and everyone had to try it. It was exceptional. It was rich and almost like a tomato sauce you'd put on pasta and I mean that in a very good way. Our waitress said the soups are excellent, so I'll be sure to get one the next time I go.
Salads: you get a house salad for free and those that went that route were very happy. If you specifically order a salad, be prepared as it is huge. My brother-in-law loved his Caesar, my sister loved her Bibb and the wedge was one of the best I've had. The gorgonzola dressing was not one I had experienced before and I couldn't stop eating it, despite already feeling full after my apps.
Entree: This is the one area that could have dropped the review down one point. That said, everything else is so good, it makes up for it. My family has come here a few times and their general review is "apps and salads are great, but the entree is a mixed bag". I observed something similar. My father had the scallops and was very happy; they were cooked perfectly and served on a bed of spinach and some very large beets. My brother-in-law had the burger and he thought it was great. My sister opted to order off the kids menu and had the tomato soup with grilled cheese. She loved it (see niece's selection above).
My Mom had the pork chop. She was surprised as she felt the cut was more like a tenderloin than a chop. Normally when you hear "chop", you picture a thick piece of meat with a big bone hanging off it, but this was prepared to look boneless. Regardless, it was cooked perfectly. Mome felt the sauce didn't taste as she expected and was a little weak on flavor, but admitted it was probably a personal preference. Unfortunately, I didn't give it a try. My bad!
I originally wanted the prime rib, but they ran out. I guess that happened the last time my family went, so perhaps Krista's should order more for the weekends as it seems to be a popular item. The waitress brought one of the last pieces over so I could check it out and it looked fantastic, so I'll be sure to try to get that again next time. Instead I opted for the pork ragu over ravioli. The ravioli was great, but the ragu sauce didn't hit me quite right. The sauce and the pork was a bit more dry than I had hoped. My sister said she had the vegetable tortellini last time and her experience was similar, so perhaps that's something to improve on: more sauce and watch the dryness of the meat.
Most of us were way too full to have dessert. We were so full we barely made it through our entrees and that's something Krista's should consider: we all agreed you could cut your portions and we would still pay the asking price. Quality over quantity.
That said, my dad snuck in a french vanilla ice cream that he loved. I got a cannoli to go and it was great!
Overall, Krista's is a fantastic place that I look forward to enjoying many times in the future. A few little tune-ups to the entrees and you're looking at a nearly perfect restaurant.
