Walking in, the ambiance is very cute and cozy. We were able to get seated right away on a weekday thankfully, even tho they were a little busy. We got the sweet potato roll (sushi) as an appetizer and omg, it was so delicious! The sweet potato was like fried on the inside and it paired so well with soup sauce and the sauce on the plate. I could've ate like 3 orders, they were so good! Then I got the tom yum tonkatsu ramen, and this was incredible! The little kick from the tom yum blend, the tender braised pork, and the perfectly cooked noodles worked in beautiful harmony. The creamy, umami broth had so much flavor! piqued my interest enough to want to order more... but what i did try -- vegan sushi-- was great! was it incredible?---no :( really hoped for more vegetables outside of typical cuke/shroom/sweet potato. the shitake handroll, however, was melt in your mouth. my kiddos are obsessed with crab rangoon so that's a constant of takeout orders -- they were sadly really greasy. my husband liked his curry. overall, the prices are a bit steep for the portions. i'd love to try out more sushi and their ramen. read more

I have seen the Chicago vegans group online rave about the vegan options here and had been planning a trip for quite sometime, which finally took place last week. I am quite picky about the vegan/vegetarian maki rolls I enjoy - hoping for a good combination of crunch and flavors and freshness. I appreciated so much that we (v/vg) were not an after thought here. At the same time, it wasn't as life-changing as I had perhaps built it up to be in my head. First, the tom kha was overly sweet - to the point, my husband and I saved it as our "dessert". The roll I ordered was served in a black rice shell, which had dried out. The "fried" items we ordered came out soggy. The service was super-friendly and the saving grace of our overall experience. We've ordered take out from here before and it never disappoints! This time we decided to try to dine-in and it was even better. The service was quick and they were super accomodating to our later reserveration.  All the fish on the sushi rolls felt fresh and had good portions! Mr. Postman and Spicy Toro specality rolls were our two favorites.  We also opted into getting Tom Yum, Wagyu Garlic Rice, and a curry that were all so good! Normally I don't feel like sushi places do the other dishes as well or vice versa; and honestly everything was fantastic. Came here on a Friday at 5:15pm, we had a reservation but likely didn't need it and ended up adding someone to our party last minute and the staff were very accommodating. There were four of us, one child. We started with the pork gyoza, and San Jose. The sushi was good, not the best in the city, a little chewier than others but it was good. The San Jose is fish free, and still very good. We each then got ramen, I got the Classic Shoyu with chicken karaage, it was good, I also got the chili paste on the side. It was not spicy. We got our child the chicken karaage bento box which comes with gyoza, tater tots, edamame, and chicken karaage. It was partially enjoyed although it looked great and is definitely delightful to see on the menu! They also had a strawberry lemonade. We also got a Mr. Postman. It was good, not great. I will start by sounding a little snobby lol - sushi rolls are not my favorite way to eat raw fish. I prefer sashimi, omakase (bougie I know), and poke. However! I still enjoy a good sushi roll from time to time and I am actually so pleased to say Kraken is probably my favorite place in Chicago I have had sushi rolls. They are on the pricier end, but I personally really enjoy how interesting their rolls are, which include rice besides white rice and pear and some other things that are slipping my mind. Heard from a little bird about their HH menu and came here for an early dinner to check it out. The ambiance is cute and cozy, perfect for a neighborhood restaurant. First of all, wow! We've driven past this place hundreds of times and it is 100% a hidden gem. Super easy to make same day reservations and the interior is very cute and stylish. What sold us was the variety of food, something for everyone. There are plenty of appetizers, sushi dishes, rice dishes, and noodle dishes including ramen! Very good for a date night or even for families to come with kids. We ordered sweet potato croquettes, three orders of sushi (sweet potato, salmon & avocado, and Mr Postman), spicy garlic miso ramen, and bulgogi bento box. Everything was delicious but the sushi rolls were the best, especially the Mr postman and sweet potato ones. All the food was of high quality and for a good price. Kraken was fantastic!! Found it by reading a Reddit post about best take out sushi places in Chicago. The Richman Rainbow roll was definitely the star of the show. The different types of fish were so fresh, and the fatty tuna on top was perfect. The Black Pearl roll was also pretty good, but I think next time I'd rather try something else with a little more fish in it. The crab rangoons were very basic, but that's not a bad thing. I ate them all pretty quickly haha. Overall, fantastic and I will be ordering again! read more

Really cute restaurant with friendly staff. I was excited to try this place because of the high reviews on Google, but I was a little disappointed. The fish quality is really good and portions are big, but the roll itself with all the additions and sauces didn't go well together. The ginger in the roll overwhelmed the flavor of the fish and was a bit off-putting. I got the Mr. Postman roll which was one of the recommended, more popular items on the menu. For appetizers, we got the tater tots and the kale dumplings. Both were decent and I liked the sauces each were paired with. The menu had an array of Thai food with the typical sushi options which was interesting. Overall a decent place, but it's pricey for the food you're getting. read more

Kraken has a fantastic happy hour! I definitely recommend you check it out. My friend and I loved getting a variety of items and sharing them. I loved the uniqueness of the crab rangoons, in a triangular shape instead of what I usually have seen. They were crispy and stuffed full of goodness! The tots were another interesting and delightful option we really enjoyed. I also got the kale and chicken sausage gyoza which was different than I expected and phenomenal! Highly recommend. I especially loved the freshness and size of the Salmon Q (cucumber) roll. While it wasn't on the happy hour menu, it was definitely worth it. Kraken Sushi & Beyond is a hidden gem of a place to go for really good sushi. It's nicely decorated inside and tables are very roomy but also have an intimate feel. They also have outdoor seating in season. There is free side street parking. Service is excellent and restrooms are very clean. Their Tom Yum soup was enough for 4 people. It was flavorful and had a lot of shrimp, mussels and squid. We had veggie egg rolls which were nice and crispy along with Takoyaki (octopus balls). All appetizers were made fresh and came to the table hot. I didn't really care for the Thai iced tea. We ordered a bunch of different sushi rolls including nigiri. It came to the table nicely presented on a natural slate platter. All seafood tasted fresh and the best thing I liked was that the rolls weren't all rice like other places! They give you more seafood in the rolls. Everything we ordered was delicious and I would recommend everything! I thought for the amount of sushi we ordered (see pic) they should have given more wasabi and ginger on the board. I did ask for more and they did provide it but we had already finished most of the sushi by then. The desert cheesecake is made in house. Light and fluffy and can easily be shared with 3 people. Service was great: friendly and quick. We got 4 signature rolls with takoyaki and vegetable croquette for apps. The black widow tasted like a dessert sushi, something to eat after the savory. The night we were there it was freezing inside the restaurant. Friendly tip, the outside seating is covered by a tarp of sort but it is by no means water proof as we discovered when a storm blew through. Inside, the main room is fairly tight and cozy, there is another antechamber room but they did not seem to be seating in there. The sake flights are a fun way to explore, the golden snitch drink is so good you would not suspect it has alcohol in it. For being closer to the city, I felt the prices were fairly reasonable, reason enough to come check it out. The food quality was good all the way around, I do not think we had a single dud out of our variety of choices within our group. There is street parking available that is not metered, so you do not have to bother with a spothero. The drink menu is hard copy, but the rest of the menu is online via QR code and your cell phone which is great, but there are a LOT of menu items so I could see it becoming tedious. To each there own but the last thing I want to do when I meet a group at a restaurant is for everyone to immediately get on their phones, it seems counterintuitive to the social aspect. Having said that, I am Yelp Elite and my phone eats first, so guilty as charged! LOL! The check is handled via a mobile handheld and the Toast app. Another great thing about this spot is they have vegan options outside of a friggin california roll that are clearly specified on the menu. The rolls I've tried are Perfect Sunday, Mighty Mushroom, and Mr Fuji. I thought all 3 were great, but the perfectly fried mushroom tempura gave the Mighty Mushroom the edge. We went here three separate times. Tonkotsu is good and seems legit. Cocktails are lovely. Sushi is prepped and served beautifully. Udon too sweet. I love their cheap prices, esp during happy hour. I love eating in their outdoor area. We were just annoyed at the last time we were here. We were placed in 2-seater table and GOT DECLINED by the hostess/server when we requested for a bigger table when there was plenty of empty tables at the time- (yes, it was only the two of us in our party.) We always order a lot of dishes so we know we need a bigger area for food. How can you place 4 apps with drinks in their miniature 2-pax tables?? In the end we see other 2-people parties seated in 4-pax tables because there were no other tables for them. This left a sour taste in my mouth despite eating delicious food and cocktails in reasonable prices. Look at my pictures and see how cramped our food in our table already and they're just our starters. (I also got the feeling if we were non-Asian we would have been seated in our requested table..) Also Beware -- they have "3% processing fee" added in the bill. What the heck is that for?? If it's for processing credit cards, we should not have been charged the time we paid cash. If it's for processing the payment regardless of how you paid , then that's BS because that's what you are supposed to do when getting a payment. Why do the patrons have to pay for "processing fee??" Two reasons above why we are not coming back for a long time when we can get better service AND great food at the same time in other places. read more

Absolute neighborhood gem that rivals sushi places downtown. Food is beautiful and delicious. A lot of the dishes have layers/depth of flavor! You can bring friends who aren't sushi eaters, they will be tempted to try and will get hooked. Plus delicious ramen/noodle dishes on the menu. Small seating section inside, reservations recommended during peak hours, they have outdoor seating too! Quite dining room with soft music, decor is "pirate ship(?)" looking from back in the nautical days playing on the sushi theme. 10/10 and will re-visit. My wife got the chicken teriyaki bento box. She said it was good, not great. I got the chashu pork don. The pork belly almost melted in my mouth and the sauce with it was great. Cannot believe we have not ate here before! It was so busy when we dined in on a late Saturday night. Luckily, we had reservations and were seated relatively quick. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and the menu was easy to navigate. We shared everything- incredible flavors and quality. We loved the King of the North and Black Pearl signature rolls. The Spicy Chicken Wings were a little too saucy for my preference, but the flavor was yummy (not spicy as its name implies).
