Oxtail Dinner garlic mashed potatoes and corn
Richard H.

Located on college avenue, which is about 2.7 miles from downtown Indianapolis. This is a must for authentic soul food! Modern, upscale restaurants. I highly recommend this she-crab bisque: creamy crab broth with generous chunks of real crab meat. Their signature dish: 6 hour oxtail dinner. Three large pieces o oxtail vertebrae, so juicy and the meat falls of the bone. I recommend the garlic mashed potatoes and grilled corn side dishes. It comes with a delicious piece of their signature cornbread.

This place is so GOOD! MUST GO if your in town! I had the combo Fried Chicken wings and smothered porkchop, cornbread dressing, candied yams and mash potatoes. The food did not disappoint!

First time trying out this legendary establishment and they did not disappoint. It's smaller than I thought it would be but has a nice welcoming ambiance. The staff was nice , it was a little bit of a wait before someone took our order but food came out prettt quick. We had fried wings, catfish, which were both fried and seasoned to perfection, no sauce needed. Our sides were Mac n cheese which was extremely flavorful but just a little too salty. Sweet potatoes were perfectly pleasing and not overly sweet, collard greens and green beans which were also delicious. It also came with a huge piece of cornbread that was light and fluffy plus buttery. Washed it down with some of their very delicious homemade lemonade which I highly recommend. I will definitely be back when I need another soul food fix!!

I promise I still want to love Kountry Kitchen, but today I said to my boyfriend, "I miss the pre-fire Kountry Kitchen". Man back then they brought out hot food and the customer service was unmatched. Today my food was BARELY warm, and the server completely got my boyfriend's meal wrong. Which we were pretty sure she was going to do becauae she was barely paying attention when taking our order. The tables are way too close together to have any type of conversation not involving the next people and the service honestly is terrible. Today it was MiMi but in all the times we've been back since they reopened we have yet to be met with great or even good service. We always seem to be bothering them. They do have good meatloaf though.

We were in town for the State Fair and wanted something more like home style cooking. This was close to where we were staying and decided to give it a try. The service was good. We were provided multiple recommendations of entrees that are popular. We ordered: Ox Tail: classic roast vibes for sure Meatloaf: would order again Kids Chicken Wings I had a special lemonade/tea that was fantastic. Overall a good experience for soul/comfort food. The cornbread was slightly dry. I needed more butter to wash it down.

I enjoy going to Kountry Kitchen is very nostalgic. I used to go out somewhere when I was little with my family now I was an adult I go and I take friends that have never been there before and see how they like the food. This is the first time I sat at the bar since they've been renovated and it was cool to go during lunch hours and we went on Juneteenth. They had a good selection of shows going on at the bar. They have a TV. We also got to meet the bartender who was really nice. This is the first time I've tried the mashed potatoes and the cabbage. They were actually good. I enjoy how the mashed potatoes were nice amount of butter, not overly seasoned. My friend enjoyed the food as well especially the the greens. The only suggestion I would make would be if they had more seating inside of the restaurant that would increase more traffic flow and not feel like people are sitting on top of each other but other than that, I like how they expanded and other people are able to have functions on the other side of the building And also a nice balcony for the warmer climate months.

Stopped by without a reservation after an event at Indiana Landmarks (1201 Central Avenue). Since they were getting ready for their busy dinner hour, I sat at the bar. I've been here before and decided to try the fried pork chops today. My side items are the yams and green beans. There's a bread choice of dinner roll or cornbread. I chose the cornbread

My friends at work and I stopped in here for lunch at the recommendation of another co-worker. We came on a Thursday and it was pretty busy. Service started off great. He gave us a few minutes to look over the menu and brought us our drinks. We decided to split the deviled eggs appetizer and were so excited to try it. It took a long time to come out, and when it did it was only 2.5 eggs. Incredibly disappointing for a $15 cold app. I ordered the hot honey fried chicken thinking it would be one piece of fried quartered chicken (or a maybe a combo) because the menu didn't say specifically what it was and it was in between quartered chicken and chicken wings. I picked mashed potatoes + fried okra as my sides and added an additional side of macaroni and cheese. One friend did the combo with whiting (at the recommendation of our server who said it was better than the catfish) and meatloaf and picked mac and cheese + mixed greens as her sides and my other friend picked the baked quartered chicken with coleslaw (can't remember her second side). Our server stopped by a long time later and said our food was being made and that we would be up next, but they were feeding a large party before us (no problem, they were here before we got here) and that it would be a "5 minute delay." 5 minutes became 15-20 minutes. During this time we also went 30+ minutes without waters being refilled. Once our food finally came, we asked for refills, salt, pepper, and vinegar. My water and one of my friend's water was refilled, but our other friend who had ordered tea never received a refill the entire time we were there (2 hours). My chicken that came out were all wings, which I did not want and wouldn't haven't ordered if the menu stated that. Our server said "they always come out like that and he would have told me if he knew I didn't know that." He went through all of the specifications of the baked vs fried chicken and dark vs white meat with my friend who ordered the baked quartered chicken, so it seems odd he would just not mention that when I ordered. And again, the menu has a separate option for chicken wings, so why would a customer expect the "hot honey fried chicken" to be only wings? He asked me 3 times if I wanted him to swap it out, which was frustrating because if I said no once, then please stop coming back to the table to ask me again. I said no thank you the first 2 times and then the 3rd time I added in that we didn't receive our food until we had already been there for an hour and I didn't want to wait that long again for a replacement. I ended up deciding I would just bring them home to my husband to eat for dinner. I ate my sides instead (glad I had gotten a 3rd one to try) and had to add copious amounts of salt and pepper to the mashed potatoes and mac and cheese because they were not seasoned. They were served hot and had a good texture, but there was no flavor, which was weird because it's a soul food spot and not at all what I remember from their original location. My fried okra was also not seasoned, but had a good breading to okra ratio and was served hot. My friend that ordered the whiting and meatloaf liked her meatloaf, but only ate part of her whiting fish and gave up because it was nothing but bones on the inside (server recommendation, but nothing was mentioned about bones). Her mixed greens were not seasoned and even after adding in malt vinegar she said they still weren't good. She did not like her mac and cheese and said the noodles tasted gummy. My other friend ate her baked chicken, said it was not seasoned like everything else, and did not like her coleslaw either after trying a bite and adding extra salt and pepper. I asked for a box for the wings and we sat without water while talking for another 30 minutes (again, we were here for 2 hours) while waiting for our server to come back so we could get checks. When he did come back we said we'd all do separate checks and instead of splitting the appetizer between he just put it on my check. This should have been split evenly or him ask us beforehand who wanted to take it if that wasn't possible. Overall, we ended up being gone from the office for 3 hours because of the drive time there and back and being in there for 2 hours to wait on food, eat, and wait for a check. Just something to think about if you are also wanting to stop in for lunch on a weekday. We were collectively disappointment in the flavor of the food and experience we had there and would not come back, which was a huge departure from when we first sat down, looked at the menu, and joked we'd have to come back enough times to order a different appetizer to split each time until we had tried them all. Our server was friendly and had manners, but lacked attention to detail and follow up, which are key to guests having a good experience.

We were excited to try out this Indy staple comfort food! The menu is your standard southern fare and there is an entire bar with many options to choose from. Good hours. We got the meatloaf and the mashed potatoes/green beans. It was very succulent meatloaf with onions in it (good texture)! Mashed potatoes were on point! The soup of the day was full of flavor. I wish the ambiance was less stale and had more personality - judging by the decor it could honestly be any restaurant, would love to see more personality shine through. The best part was the service: our waitress was absolutely phenomenal, a sweetheart who we had great conversation with the entire time. We stayed extra long and got more drinks just to talk to her a little longer.

This was my first visit to the new building. My party of three arrived shortly after opening on a Sunday. The restaurant is nicely decorated with hand painted murals and actual photos of famous people that have dined at the restaurant. It also has a bar. It started off a bit rocky, but ended on a good note. Service wasn't as pleasant as we had hoped initially, but our waitress quickly warmed up to us. It was disappointing for my friend to discover there wasn't any coffee available for breakfast. I ordered apple juice only to be told it wasn't available either. We both settled for orange juice. I ordered the chicken and waffles. The portion was plentiful and delicious. I really liked the waffle. I also tasted the fried green tomatoes. They were good as well. Everyone loved their meals, and decided we would return.

So, on Thursday evening August 14th after work I had a 5pm reservation at the restaurant. It was my first time at the new Kountry Kitchen. It's in a great growing neighborhood on North College Ave. There are no stairs entering the building, you'll have to enter the doors facing Ace building across the street. Kountry Kitchen does have an event center along with a rooftop now. There are plenty of parking spaces on the lot as well as street parking. I highly recommend you to reserve especially if it's more than one person. I was seated as soon as I arrived at 5pm, it wasn't many people inside of the restaurant since it was still an early evening at 5pm. For, my entrée I ordered rib tips that came with two sides which were yams, and mac and cheese. To, drink I had a sweet tea to drink that should had been sweeter. The sides yams were absolutely delicious, the mac and cheese wasn't cheesy like the menu described, however the mac and cheese was still good. The rib tips were definitely made in the oven, BBQ had a sweet tangy to it, the rib tips were well seasoned, a lot of fatty meat on the rib tips, but overall on the rib tips wasn't bad. Now, the Server could had been a little more friendly, she never asked me if I wanted more sweet tea, but she did come around few times asked me how's the food as well as if I needed anything. Kountry Kitchen does have a full bar, have a lot of events there, and as I was leaving at 6pm there was an event on their rooftop called Bourbon and cigars. I'll definitely go back to try other items on the menu.

I've been here for a few events over the summer and have had a blast each time. The food is delicious, the staff is friendly and hilarious, and the service is always great - especially given we had large groups. Be sure to check out the new event venue and rooftop space.

I've struggled with how to rate and review Goose the Market for a long time…read more I've struggled mightily. It's an Indianapolis icon in many ways. It's beloved. And listen, it's not the most wheelchair friendly place in the world. If you're a wheelchair user, you're in all likelihood not going to the cellar unless you're extraordinary with you're chair or you crawl. I remember attending a Yelp event here, and I just wrestled with these issues so much. It's not inaccessible - you can get in the door, though even the parking is a bit wonky and the curb-cuts a bit worn. This is an older building in an older neighborhood. So yeah, if you're a wheelchair user plan ahead. I am a wheelchair user. And I suppose I should knock off my usual 1-star for accessibility issues. But, I just can't do it. I, instead, choose to go 5-stars with my narrative disclaimer that there are accessibility issues here. But, my word. This is a great place and every single experience I've had with Goose the Market, including last night's Italian Film Festival, has been stellar whether I'm in their location or at an event they are catering. What is Goose the Market? First off, nearly everyone considers it one of the best - Indianapolis Monthly, Eater, Yelp, etc. Goose the Market offers a daily menu of sandwiches, soups, gelato, and small plates. It offers raw beef, pork, poultry, game, seafood, in-house made sausage/smoked meats, and more. It offers charcuterie - both in-house and from other producers. It offers farmstead cheeses, fresh produce, artisan breads, preserves, sauces, pickles, pasta, crackers, flours/grains, and a lot more. There's the cellar - Enoteca bar with Italian style wine by the glass and small plates (and it has all-ages seating). Goose the Market offers a wine of the month club, gift cards, catering, classes, daily specials, and more. What can I say? There are those places that are worth the effort. As a lifelong person with a disability, I long ago realized the world would never be perfectly accessible. It's never going to happen. I'll continue to work toward a more accessible world, though I'll also honor that there are those places where I feel welcome anyway. I feel welcome at Goose the Market, though I can't quite get the full experience. The service is exceptional, the products quite awesome, the environment warm and friendly, and there's simply no doubt it's one of Indy's treasures. So yeah, five stars. With a disclaimer that those with mobility impairments may need to plan ahead or have a companion along. Who wants to be my companion?

You can also park in the gravel lot across the road. It was raining pretty heavily so we got wet but wasn't a far dash. The counter is like any deli with the items displayed in the cold case. You can browse the various freezers or shelves for items like picked veggies, canned fish or spreads. It was fun to see that you could buy everything needed for a picnic or impromptu lunch! We got sandwiches to go as well as locally baked cookies. I tried the recommendation for a vegetarian sandwich. It was nice and crusty and had some good flavor. I might create my own next time, but theirs was good and had lots of flavor! My friend was new to Indianapolis and really liked the options. She said she would be back and so will we. They also do tasting events and other things so we might check out one of their offerings. A fun local spot!

The space is big and fun, with a large dining room, an old-school video arcade game, interesting art, and a big screen playing movies, which adds to the laid-back, quirky vibe. It's counter service with clear menu boards on the wall, making ordering easy. I had the cheesy jalapeño grits with bacon and an egg and... my goodness. So incredibly delicious. One friend ordered the same grits but swapped in fried catfish instead of bacon--also a fantastic choice. Our third went with a classic plate with eggs and bacon, and let me tell you, the bacon is thick and plentiful. We ordered a side of fries for the table and there were more than enough to share. Self-serve coffee with all the fixings is a nice touch, and the service was friendly and welcoming. Fun atmosphere, great food, solid portions--definitely will be back.

We were greeted right away and looked over the menu a bit before ordering. My husband ordered the country breakfast with chicken (definitely the way to go) and I ordered the cheesy jalapeño grits with bacon. We each got a cup for water and I ordered a coffee, excited because I saw ahead of going that it was self-serve (like at Cafe Patachou where I can get as many coffees as I like without having to wait for our server to come check on us first). However, the self serve coffee excitement was short-lived after seeing that they only offered half and half as creamer (I'm lactose intolerant) and the two coffee carafes were not labeled for what was inside (decaf? medium roast? you'll never know!) and then one was completely empty and never refilled during our visit. The water station also was not ever refilled during our visit, so we were not able to get refills after filling up our cups the first time. It took a couple of tries to find a table we could sit at because you seat yourself, but several had not been cleaned after other guests left and had food and drinks spilled on them. There were definitely enough staff members there to be able to clean them in between customers, so we weren't sure why they were left that way. We ended up sitting in the middle of the room towards the front, across from the clown art wall, which made for interesting conversation as we looked through everything. When the food came out I was impressed with the portions, but I had no flavor whatsoever to my cheesy jalepeno grits. The egg and bacon were good, but not enough to make it a good dish and I would not order it again. And I love savory breakfast and grits in general, so it was a real bummer. My husband's dish was worth the visit though. It was a huge portion size and we honestly would just split it if we came back and ordered it. It was so savory, seasoned perfectly, and juicy. One of the best breakfast dishes I have tried recently! I really debated between 3-4 stars for this, but my dish was a flop, the lack of cleanliness for the seating area, the lackluster self-serve coffee station, and not refilling the beverages ultimately scored a 3 star review for me. I would come back and try something else though, or split the country chicken breakfast because it was really good. Hopefully next time the beverages won't be empty!

The ambiance is old fashioned in my mind, but very cute and suitable for a sandwich place. I ordered the Milanesa de Polo Sandwich, which is a chicken tenderloin sandwich, and a side of the fried sweet potatoes. The food actually came out in a decent amount of time,so I was shocked and surprised, but very pleased at the same time. As expected, the food was incredible and terrific like I thought it would be. The sandwich was huge and had to use a knife and fork to eat it. The fried sweet potatoes were excellent and had a nice texture. They were very flavorful. The sandwich tasted amazing and was one of the best chicken tenderloin sandwiches I have ever had since living in Indy. Now I see why everyone loves this place so much, because the sandwiches are high quality and just so perfect!! Our server was wonderful and gave great recommendations on the menu items. Her recommendations were spot on and everyone enjoyed their sandwiches. The steak is also incredible, so I would highly recommend the Lolo Supreme sandwich. Don Juan V's sandwiches is a wonderful mom and pop business in Indy that is worth checking out if you are looking for a fresh good sandwich. Given it is a small venue, you may have to wait a bit for your food to be prepared and delivered to your table, so will need to have some patience if you dine inside, but trust me, it is worth it and you will not be disappointed.
