We were surprised how nice the cabin was. The Park is easy to get to and the park is very nice. It is right off of the highway. The folks who run this place is very nice. It was a little more than we were looking to spend but the stop was convenient. We arrived after hours and our reservation information was available at the office. We were not provided with a receipt by email or paper, so I was a little disappointed by that. I always receive a receipt in some form when staying at a campground. Other than that, the grounds appeared to be well kept. The sites weren't too close together. Unfortunately I did have a hard time sleeping. In the middle of the night, people were grouped up and speaking very loudly directly behind our camper. I never had that happen before. Their conversation was very loud and kept waking me up. We left really early in the morning the next day so we weren't able to explore much more than that. It was a nice stop though.

My best friend and I went to Pocahontas State Park a few weekends ago to do the Beaver Lake trail. This park is pretty big and they offer a variety of trails to explore. I love that you are able to walk, fish, bike, and even camp here. I just learned that if you are an REI member, you can take your receipt and use it as a payment to enter this park! It's usually $7 to enter with a car, but it was nice to be able to enter with a REI receipt. I've come twice this year and while the trees are not green yet, it's still a lovely park to explore. It's very family-friendly. There is a playground in the space. They also seem to have pools here. You can use All Trails to find a trail you want or ask the park ranger for recs on the map. They also have an information center and museum. If you live in the RVA area, I recommend checking out this park at least once.

You might spot hawks, eagles, or herons. In spring, the path leaving the reservoir is often covered in tiny frogs. They have no self-preservation so watch your step. The park hosts concerts at its amphitheater, including touring acts like Dark Star Orchestra. Snakes are common, especially near water. They're native, and you're trespassing so leave them be. Or text a picture to the VA Snake Hotline (804) 617-7086 to confirm that you don't need to freak out. As for the paw prints in the mud: I've seen them. They look like mountain lion tracks. Officially extinct in Virginia, but the prints say otherwise. Leave no trash. Pack out everything. This place is awesome/wonderful/beautiful!!! Don't mess it up.

We enjoyed a full hookup site. This campground is in perfect proximity to all three historic spots as well to Busch Gardens which we went to with the two day pass to break up the large amount of history. This all worked out very well. The campground is very nice, and well taken care of. George is the head of maintenance and grounds, and he makes sure that things get done. The grass is cut, the staff will pickup your bagged trash if you set it out on your site by 9am, picnic tables with umbrellas was a nice addition and the gas grill at each campsite makes cooking easier for the campers. Staff will deliver ice and firewood to your campsite. The swimming pool with splash pad was a big hit with the grandchildren and made the choice of staying at this campground easy. They also have an activity building that features things to do like a basketball shooting game, tabletop shuffleboard, a pool table, giant checkers, various board games, and more. There is a laundry room adjacent. There is a kid jumping pillow, playground, hiking trails, disc golf, and lots more. WiFi was good and the grounds are secure. We enjoyed our stay here. The cost per night of our stay seemed a bit high at first sight but with the many amenities the cost smoothed out once on site. A couple negatives I have is that a $10.00 price tag for a small bag of firewood was very disappointing and over the top. Also, we made our reservations early to ensure locking in on the available site of our choice but then were forced to pay an additional $10 fee to guarantee that they didn't move us into a site that would not be our preferences. Even so, we would stay here again if we wanted to spend more time in this area.

Those premium spots are just clutch. The morning of call is great. They keep you informed of any changes, say to get setup, and make it super casual. When we arrived, we knew where to setup, knew that checking in wasn't the omg gotta do this moment, and then just had the no-pressure rush. Why I like this campground - it's all about the customer service. We visit the store - smiling, helpful face that loves the dog (always helps) and always attentive to any questions we may have. When folks were having issues I saw folks running to help, fixing issues, and saying hello to customers pulling in.... all at the same instance (looked exhausting - but it's also what sets this place apart). For those that have an issue with the train, I get it... however, at a certain point it becomes white noise and it even entertained our daughter as she watched the coal or passenger trains roll on through. Imo - not a big deal as it just adds to the character of the place... but I guess everyone is different. Keep it up Anvil.. see ya soon! We stayed here as part of an RV event over Labor Day Weekend. I had never been to an event like…read morethis before and was a little shocked when informed that we would be boon-docking. We ended having a great time and will likely do again (with more planning and preparation). As for the site, Coles Point looks like it's past it's expiration. It's right off the Potomac River (great!), but it needs a lot of work. There must of been nearly 100 RV units on this property, all boon-docking. (1) The bathroom facilities need to be upgraded (2 showers per sex), the water pressure was non-existent, and the showers were not cleaned. The water was hot, at least. My husband said the door on the men's shower did not even close properly (the door was too big!). I did not look into the toilet/sink section. (2) The storefront needs more supplies. They had some fishing tackle, but no fishing line. A few snacks, but no basic staples that an RV'er might need: oil, sugar, salt, paper towels, paper plates, etc. They did appear to sell lots of ice. I would suggest propane too. (3) Someone said the restaurant used to be a big thing. Now closed. We went to Walmart and was a 45-min trip one-way. There is nothing in the area to eat or drink for miles. If available, I'm sure the RV'ers would gladly spend their money so as to not leave, but with no offerings, there is not much to recommend the resort. (4) Due to the size of the event, planning should have been done to provide additional dumpsters to accommodate the amount of trash that was generated or have a mid-event dumpster pick-up. All the dumpsters were overflowing when everyone pulled out. (5) The actual campground. People have been living there and in all such places, it begins to look run-down. It was described to me as "ghetto". People who camp don't generally want to RV beside people who live in an RV park as it becomes truly "lived in", especially in a expensive unit. It was overgrown, the structures were falling apart or needed to be painted, and it looked "bad". I hope to see changes if we return next year, which we hopefully will. Good luck to the new owners because the site can be great for travelers.

Recycling and trash disposal is easy access to campsites. Visitor parking is across the road from the campsites. The camp store is well-stocked and staff are super friendly. Propane refill is available from the camp store. Miniature golf is available on-site. Let's just say they have it all. This is one of the highest-rated campgrounds on the Good Sam Club app - they are maintaining that high standard every single day. One of our top five campgrounds we have ever been to since beginning our camper journey in 2013. We will be back and hope for it to be often! Note: Close to local attractions such as Colonial Williamsburg, Busch Gardens, Yorktown, Jamestown Settlement, and many other local attractions. Be sure to eat at Captain George's and get your seafood fill.

I guess everyone has the right to give whatever rating they want, but sometimes I feel this is unfair for the business. We stayed a week there in July and had a great time. Due to the unusual hot weather we spent a lot of time at the pool. The pool seemed very clean and we didn't encounter anyone drinking alcohol. Even if someone did have a drink I wouldn't blame the RV park for their actions. We used our StarLink internet so I can't comment on the quality of the RV Park internet. I found out over the years that most KOA's and Good Sam parks do have connection problems when they are 100% occupied. The Staff was very friendly and helpful. Someone mentioned in another review that there was no garbage service. To me that is not big deal I just put my trash in the dumpster, just as I would do at a National or State Park. We used the RV Park's showers on the final day and they were very clean. Finally, we did see big beautiful Pine Cones on the ground and we didn't hear any report of injuries from getting struck in the head by a falling Pine Cones, as one reviewer worried about in their review. Overall if we ever return to Williamsburg we would definitely return to American Heritage RV Park.
