We stayed at this campground for a little over 2 months while relocating & enjoyed our stay. The staff here make this place wonderful & are very accommodating. It's clean and well kept & they also have fun activities for kids on the weekends and holidays. I will say if you are a light sleeper to keep in mind the campground is next to the railroad and the trains run through multiples times throughout the night but this is out of the campgrounds hands. read more

Welp... Anvil did it again... we came, visited, and yet again - blown away by the customer service and general good time. First off we LOVED the spot we got. Those premium spots are just clutch. The morning of call is great. They keep you informed of any changes, say to get setup, and make it super casual. When we arrived, we knew where to setup, knew that checking in wasn't the omg gotta do this moment, and then just had the no-pressure rush. Why I like this campground - it's all about the customer service. We visit the store - smiling, helpful face that loves the dog (always helps) and always attentive to any questions we may have. When folks were having issues I saw folks running to help, fixing issues, and saying hello to customers pulling in.... all at the same instance (looked exhausting - but it's also what sets this place apart). For those that have an issue with the train, I get it... however, at a certain point it becomes white noise and it even entertained our daughter as she watched the coal or passenger trains roll on through. Imo - not a big deal as it just adds to the character of the place... but I guess everyone is different. Keep it up Anvil.. see ya soon! Ray, Rachel and Cayden were great!! Very nice and accommodating individuals. I love that they give free donuts, coffee and icecream during your stay. Sometimes snow comes and other goodies as well! They have the list of their activities listed in the bathrooms and around the campground. The little wooden cabins are so cute! Perfect for a family of 2-3. Or even 4-5 if you are okay with bunk beds! There's a picnic table, fire pit, and grill in each space. We were even able to fit our pack n play for the baby in the room with the queen bed, which was perfect! The bathrooms were clean and well maintained. There's a game room, a general store, a park for the kiddos, and a pool! The campgrounds is only about 4 acres, so it's more intimate which I loved! We will definitely be back and may even try out one of their bigger cabins! If you haven't checked them out yet, head on over, you won't regret it. read more

We stayed at one of the patio campsites for the past 3 days and we can't wait to come back! The camp ground is well kept and in the perfect location, only a few minutes from everything we wanted to do. We were required to pay upfront in full to secure a reservation. Upon arrival, there were too many unexpected issues. Crushed stone over 90% of the ground, tiny dog park, sites extremely close together. The freight trains were very close, loud, and continued throughout the night. Since the moment we arrived the staff has been a great help, competent and pleasant . The grounds are beautifully kept! The bathrooms rival any five star hotel for cleanliness. They look brand new. When we ran into trouble with our plumbing (RV is a 2023 Jayco Entegra) The staff immediately brought over the cards of three different repair guys to help us out. The sites are clean and level. There is a game room and playground for children. The pool was open and looked great. We didn't use the restrooms. The laundry was a tad old fashioned for me, so we went to town for that. Oh, there was no a/c working in the laundry. Proximity to Jamestown, Yorktown and Williamsburg was perfect. As RV newbies we read that for your first trip you should stay close to home so we traveled south to Williamsburg where it looked like the weather would be a bit warmer than where we live in Northern VA. Husband found us spot #9 @anvilcampground which he read on the reviews was an ideal spot because of the ease of pulling up and then backing straight in. After we checked in we went to our spot (warning there are train tracks right behind this spot) and as we had just finished unhitching the camper a fellow camper informed us that there was no water hookup where we were (even though we were told there was water when it was booked.‍) Husvand went to the office and came back with the bad news/good news report being that we had to re-hitch the camper and move to a new spot BUT this one had full hookups and we weren't going to be charged extra! Upon arrival to spot #46 we had a concrete pad with a picnic table, bench swing with cup holders and a fire pit! (We later found out this is the best spot in the park). We were losing daylight so we worked as fast as we could to get settled in for the night. So our review of Anvil Campground was that it's a great site with awesome customer service. They had a general store, doggie park, playgrounds and a pool. It was the perfect place for newbies like us. It's in the heart of Williamsburg so you're close to everything. The only down side is that you are right next to a railroad and can hear (and sometimes feel) the freight trains coming through so bring your earplugs! read more

This campground is not desirable. There is a frequently used train track that runs the length of the campground. Nowhere can you escape it. Freight drains and passenger trains run thru several times a day including 2 am & 6 am. Not only that, it's evidently close to a hospital (or 2) as emergency vehicles constantly driving past, sirens screaming. I thought I was in NYC. DO NOT RECOMMEND. read more

We had an awesome time at Anvil Campground in Williamsburg this weekend! The grandparents started the business 67 years ago! And for the last 15 years or so, Chris, Ray, and their families have taken up the mantle. They have made numerous improvements over the years and have one of the best campgrounds out there, especially for families. They have live music, popcorn, pastries and coffee, popsicles, sno cones, barrel-train rides -- ALL for free! Then there's the general store with lots of locally made products and anything else you might need at a campsite. Oh, and the pool, multiple playgrounds, game room, and laundry facilities! They are killing it. Get away from home for a few nights and explore Williamsburg. Take your RV or tent, or if you're not a camper (we're not), then rent a cabin or cottage. We hadn't even left the property and the kids were already begging us to plan our next trip. Seriously. Go. read more

Overall, extremely clean and nice campground but a few items of note - the bathhouse is extremely small for 50ish sites. It seems as though they may rely on patrons to utilize their own facilities vs theirs because they have a bathhouse consisting of 2 showers and 2-3 restroom stalls. The pool area is small but quite clean and appealing. The store has a lot to offer. The sites are a bit on the smaller site when factoring awnings and slides but everyone seemed to fit without an issue. Our site didn't have sewer and the dump station was situated so we'd block the entire (only) roadway if we attempted to void our tanks as we departed. The biggest pitfall (and it's not in their control) is the train. Our site (#9) backed right up to train tracks with no fence or vegetation or anything to curb the sound so at least 3x a night, we heard it come rumbling through. It was a loud and long train. We will likely stay here again, if we could stay against the road. It won't silence the train but it's a convenient park to stay when visiting the area. (And a tablet or 2 of Tylenol PM will help block the train) read more

Very nice campground. The location is convenient to everything. The campground itself is small and very well attended with a staff that was friendly and a bathhouse that was the cleanest I've ever been in. The electric, water and sewer hookup was modernized. The site we were on (#39, which we requested because it was a pull through site) was very close to the RR tracks. There were lots of trains passing at different times of day and night which was pretty loud. This was not Anvil's fault, but we will try to get a site closer to the front of the campground next time. This campground is clean, well kept, with friendly staff. But I wasn't prepared for how small it is. We had truck trouble so had to borrow a truck to get to our vacation. Which means we arrived late ( 11:30pm) Our check in paperwork was hanging outside the office where they told us it would be. Cool. Then I had to navigate my 38ft TT and Dually 1 ton through what can only be described as threading the needle, through the narrow campground street. I still , for the life of me don't know how i did it and didn't hit anything. The sites are small with little room, because this campground is tiny. I took a picture with my phone and got 95% of the entire campground in 1 photo. I'm struggling to give a bad review because everything was so well maintained. The bath house and showers were modern and CLEAN, but the doors were propped open the whole time we stayed there. not Air conditioned I guess, not terrible but unnerving. Playground was cool with a bunch of things for the kids to do, which was right next to us, so close in fact that our awning seemed to be hanging over the fence between our site and the playground. The staff we spoke with were friendly and very polite. The camp store didn't have alot in there but it did have most essentials, and a good assortment of camping supplies/ accessories. I've been shoe horned in in tighter sites but this one is the smallest so far. Nice grounds, nice pool, Very clean, BUT tiny. Anvil seems to be in the center of most of the attractions in Williamsburg which was great. Busch Gardens is 15min away, Water country the same thing. Shopping, restaurants, just down the road. Very convenient for exploring the area. The railroad tracks are immediatly outside the campground. The trains which pass on avg 6 times a day are mostly freight with 70 to 100 coal cars moving at at least 60 miles an hour. It literally took 15 minutes for some trains to pass by. I found it facinating because I know that coal probably came from my area. But, if your not into trains, that sh-t is going to be irritating. I'm not going back there, not because the campground was terrible in any way. I'm not going back because I know if I try to get my truck and trailer through that Tiny campground again I'm not going to be lucky the second time. The website photos give the impression that everything is bigger, but its NOT! For what we paid for a week in July I'm disappointed. Nothing specific to complain about just feels like we got fleeced somehow. Just not sure why.... read more

I stayed a week at this cg while passing through on my northern trek. I was so pleased! The minute I pulled in I loved it! The site I was given was long, with a picnic table, fire ring, and a swing, on a patio behind the rig, complete with small fences between the sites to give you privacy. I saw 2 playgrounds and a pool while there. The store is super well stocked with both Rv supplies, souvies, and some grocery type items. There is a bus that stops every hour at the cg to bring you to the neighboring tourist sites. As a senior, it cost me $1.50 for the day ! I truly enjoyed my stay and highly recommend! Anvil is a quaint campground. Penny, the campground cashier who checked us in and saw us daily, was friendly and accommodating. Our site was spacious and shady. We were close to our visits to Williamsburg, Yorktown, and Jamestown. The tickets to Jamestown and Williamsburg with the museum were nice to purchase before our visit at the camp store. The passing trains were entertaining and you get use to them as you sleep. The weather was not good for swimming, but the pool looked clean and well kept. Ok first off this was a clean and cute campground. The pool was very nice but small. The camp store was great and there is an air conditioned game room. The playground was also very fun. We camped here for 4 days to see the Historic triangle and even drove down to Virginia Beach for the day. The campground is located close to many historic sites. But..... The Trains! Good God this is just worst campground for getting sleep. It's literally located right next to a track that has Amtrak and Freight Trains. There is no schedule for these trains, they come at all times of day, multiple times at night and they are LOUD. It was extremely difficult to sleep here. This campground is also very small and tight. It's gravel which is nice for keeping these clean but you will literally be on top of your neighbors. Your eating/Lounging area is also right next to your neighbors electric/water & sewer hookups. Kinda gross. The question we are ask ourselves is would be come back to the campground if we came back to this area. Answer here. No we would not. For all the thing the website claims it is not really true. The only staff we saw where the ones running the camp store. They really talk up the bathrooms on their website. They are nice but not what they claim. The faucets are rusting and there is no air conditioning in this building. Two shower stalls and two toilets per bathroom (mens & women's) for a campground with roughly 70 sites. For reference I kept track of the trains the days we were there. See info: *Sounds like what you would expect if a train was driving right through the middle of your campground. Honestly scared me the first train. So freaking loud. Like I wish I had the words to describe how loud. *Notes Times are only overnight and early morning times. Trains went by many times during the day too. Monday Night: 9:56pm lasted 3min (Freight Train) 12:26am short maybe 30sec (Amtrak) 3:56am short (Amtrak) Tuesday 7:21am longer and louder 3min Night: Freight train middle of night Wednesday: 2 Freight Trains & and Amtrak between 5-6:10am Freight Train 6:53am Wednesday Night: 5 freight trains overnight (10p-6am) Freight Train at 7:15am Thursday Night: Freight Train 9:24pm long 3min+ Overnight 4 Freight Trains, 2 within 5min of each other. If the campground sees this review they will comment and gaslight me as they did with others saying they are sorry that this doesn't match what hundreds of other campers have reviewed/said. I absolutely love it here. I've been staying long term as I'm currently living out of my RV full time while being active duty military stationed in Norfolk. I've been here for about 5 months so far and plan to stay here during my full 2(-ish) year tour. At first the train was a little worrisome. The first couple days I thought "What did I get myself into?" But I don't even notice it anymore. The train doesn't seem to be on any type of schedule. The bathhouse and laundry facility have always been clean and available for use. Summer months just picked up, so I anticipate at some point there may be a waiting line for one or the other, but I expect this would only be an issue on weekends. I haven't used the pool or arcade area yet due to this crazy COVID epidemic, but peeking in to the facilities they look well cared for and maintained just like the rest of the property. There is also a nice fenced in park for you kids, and a nice fenced in grassy area for your furry children. The general store has had all my basic needs like tissue, ice, table cloths, and various other little things I didn't want to run into town for. It's also been SUPER convenient that I can charge the items to my account when I don't have cash on me. (I don't believe there's an ATM, but I've never asked, so maybe I just haven't noticed it.) They also carry snacks, souvenirs and many other camping/entertainment items. The staff hosts social events which are really nice to get campers outside and socializing and get the kids out to play. On my way to switch over laundry recently Brandon stopped me to let me know they were giving out popsicles! It's just one of those little things that makes a big difference and makes the campground feel like a little neighborhood with people coming together. read more

We had originally scheduled a night stay at Anvil Campground. This was our first RV trip as a family and we weren't sure what to expect. We were running late on check-in time from our previous location. I called ahead to let the staff know - they got me checked in and had firewood waiting at my site which was really great. The facilities as a whole were excellent. Our premium site was outstanding, with new swing/table with umbrella/firepit - it had more than enough room and plenty of privacy with the divider walls. The facilities were all excellent - we used the playgrounds, the pool, the game room and bathroom/laundry facilities. All exceeded our expectations. I mentioned to my wife when we got home that I missed the shower pressure from Anvil! The biggest thing to mention was how much we appreciated the precautions being taken and the protocols in place to address COVID. Staff members wore masks at all times, required handwashing/sanitization at all public locations in the park and managed social distancing at the pool and game room very well. There didn't happen to be many children onsite during the week - so we had no trouble taking advantage of the amenities. Really the only challenge that we had - which isn't specific to Anvil Camp at all - was that Uber's were not as readily available as we expected. Anvil is pretty conveniently located to the business district in Williamsburg so it wasn't an issue of proximity - there just weren't Uber's available, likely as a result of the pandemic. I was able to get a taxi to the nearest rental car location and we rented a car for the week - which turned out to work really well for us. So I would caution you that Uber/public transportation wouldn't be an efficient way to get to the Williamsburg sites, but if you have your vehicle with you, no problems at all - or if your plan is to stay at the camp your whole stay, you will be perfectly happy. read more

This is easily the worst campsite we've been to in our camping travels. Save yourself a headache and go to American Heritage RV park instead!! First, we did get in late and hooked up in the dark (I've done it before, no biggie). The street we are on is very narrow. On top of that, the sites are so small and packed on top of each other, that if you have a larger camper and big vehicle, they will not fit in your lot. Because of this I had to carefully navigate my 26' TT around 3 cars park on the road near and across my site. Second, the train! 1140pm, 1250am, 3am. Forget about sleeping through the night here! And they say they tell all their customers about the train, but they most certainly did not tell my wife. Third, dog parks are a joke. Tiny and unkempt. The dog parks also have zero lighting for night visits from the pups. This entire park is tiny, so long walks with the pups are out of the question, and the main road it's off of has no sidewalk. American Heritage is a bigger park, much more spread out, grass at your site, bigger pool and patio, and miles of wooded trails for nice morning hikes. Anvil is a joke of an RV park, no matter how many "awards" they've won. BTW, read their responses to the bad reviews, it's 100% a copy and paste reply. Nice customer service there. read more

The campground is small, but very cozy. Our site was paved with gravel and it was level. The office is open from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. Very friendly and helpful staff which made us feel welcome to the campground. Chatting with fellow campers was also most enjoyable. Anvil has easy access from the highway; easy access to each site; has a swimming pool, game room, and play yard for the kids. Additionally, Anvil is pet friendly. A GREAT feature is that it in next to an active train line, which was pure entertainment for us to watch the trains go by (both freight and passenger). The check out process was simple. TRAINS...our site was about 35 feet from the tracks. Trains all night up to 3:45 am when I finally gave up on trying to sleep and got up. the campground is clean and has tons of amenities. Nice laundry room, bathrooms, sites are pretty level but your hookups are in the other persons site. Swimming pool and kid play area and also an arcade. The campground is kept up very nicely.
