Camping here was a good experience overall! Our neighbors were quiet enough--no rowdiness or late-night noise except for a surprising number of cars and golf carts going down our "road" all day until 10 or 11 p.m. A lot of people seem to drive to the bathhouse instead of walk. Speaking of the bathhouse, it was not disgusting but could definitely use a good scrubbing. It smelled awful the first night but not the rest of our trip. The water in the showers was hot and perfectly adjustable! Both the men's and women's sides have 3 stalls and 3 showers with a common changing area. The office closed at 5 every day, and the staff members there didn't seem enthused about answering my questions when I went in. The store is very sparsely stocked. No hygiene items; just fishing supplies, ice cream & drinks, and a couple of power adapters and the like. The pool was great! read more

Great camp site conveniently located in Williamsburg with attractions nearby. Perfect spot if you're wanting to visit the historical triangle. We stayed in the glamping sites right along the river and loved our views. The bathrooms were clean and well kept. There were volleyball nets, a playground and kayaks available. I also saw a few boat launches with signs for fishing tournaments. It gets really windy along the river and in the tent but we were prepared. I imagine it gets pretty busy in the summer. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and you can't beat the location! read more

We love this quiet gem of a park. We have stayed in multiple sites, but 321 is our favorite. It sits by itself near the path to the pier. It is full hook up with utilities in a great position. Most sites have a great water view in the fall/winter. There is foliage blocking the view for quite a bit of the sites during the summer. The park is right on the capital bike trail. It's a great spot to bike into Williamsburg. The park has a great field to play in. There is a pool and small basketball hoop. The boat ramp is typically hopping, especially during the warmer months. There is fishing at the park on the pier and on the banks. Great location for trips into Williamsburg. The outlets are popular. Check out Kepi Greek Kitchen for dinner and Meadows for dessert. read more

Chickahominy Riverfront Park is a great camping spot right outside of Williamsburg and a good home base if you want to visit Jamestown or Yorktown as well. There are a variety of sites (group sites, electric/water, and full hookup). The campground is usually full on the weekends as they host multiple fishing tournaments throughout the year. Fishing on the James River and access to an entrance to the Virginia Capital Trail seem to be the biggest draws for campers. They have a boat launch, a place to put a kayak in, a pool and playground, and plenty of field space. Typically, it's pretty quiet and campers seem pretty laid back. Watch out for rain in the forecast, as the campground will hold standing water for awhile. read more

When we got there, we had power for only about the first 40 min. There was no power the rest of the night. Because of this we couldn't run our refrigerator all night and therefore lost all our perishable food. Not only that, but we also couldn't run the AC which made it much harder for my disabled veteran husband to breathe at night due to the humidity, so he really didn't sleep. We asked for a discount on our rate due to this and was given a very rude no. They also do not have any veteran discount which is ridiculous especially for a camp in VA. I just feel so bad for my husband. He was so excited to stay in and near Williamsburg and enjoy doing everything in Colonial Williamsburg today, now he's so tired he's not going to be able to enjoy it, and we have to buy all new food. read more

The pool and splash pad are awesome! The young lifeguards are friendly but firm, giving a safe and happy swimming environment. The little snacks at the guard shack are a huge added plus to! read more

We arrived ahead of a rainstorm and the off-duty camp host helped us find a better spot than one under a big tree limb, it was level and huge! The nights were perfectly peaceful, and we really wanted to take advantage of the bicycle trail into the historic Jamestown settlement, but the weather changed our plans. We took a drive instead. The park is great, with a pool and water feature for summer months. Also, it just happens to be close to an aero modeler club field. Ahhh-mazing! The only problem we had was with water pressure. Weird, but we're not 100-percent sure it was a park issue. read more

Base Camp near Historic Triangle Jamestown/Williamsburg/Yorktown Most recent stay was July 2nd thru July 5th 2017 ~ We camp in a Little Rig "Tear Drop" style RV only 15' long w/o toilet or shower ~ plus we like to eat outdoors using the picnic table and set up our dining canopy for sun and weather protection and thus rely on condition of campgrounds facilities and being nearby our site ~ so our critique is focused in that area. Yes we did get close to the restroom/shower building an older/dated facility showing its age, needing a little updating. Shower stall area had communal changing/drying off area with a long bench, plus hooks and cubby hole shelves for your stuff; all nice conveniences. Shower stalls were separated with a shower curtain, but a convenience item would be to add rubber floor mats to keep feet off wet floor during dry off time. Communal sink area was messy and also needed paper towels that could be used to wipe down area after each use, also needed hooks for hand towels and small shelves for toiletries This is a government operated park and over all the grounds was well groomed. Interior roadways were asphalt and sites were grass mixed with gravel. However, they were in need of maintenance like new asphalt to fill pot holes in roadway and gravel to cover dirt in sites. It rained during our stay and site was muddy and the roadway potholes filled with water [see my photos] All this resulted in unpleasant stay - questioned camp staff and was told work orders were submitted long ago but have been waiting for public officials to authorize funding and assign job to contractor. read more

Yet another amazing JCC park. While many other parks in the JCC system offer hiking/running trails as a prominent feature, "Chick Park" (at least that's what I call it) draws in people for water and camping. It's also become a popular parking spot to use the adjacent Capital Bike Trail. For water lovers, the park offers a boat launch at the mouth of the Chickahominy River. You can also kayak, wakeboard or open water swim from here. The park offers kayaks to rent for a nominal fee. There's also a pool, which is $4 for the day for County residents and $5 for nonresidents. It's pretty big and has a slide for the kids. I wish they had lap swimming :-( however it's strictly a recreation pool (as is the other JCC outdoor pool at Upper County Park). The park has a large and wooded campground with over 100 sites that includes many hookups for campers. The pool is free to use if you rent a camp site. There is also bike rentals available, I believe near the campsite. I also hear there's ice cream available at the camp store, but I have yet to try. I am one of those that only use the parking lot for access to the cap trail. But it's actually encouraged. There's a large map of the trail and a sign that designates the lot as a trailhead. I love that there are restrooms and water fountains to take advantage of. I've come to prefer parking here (at about the 6.5 MM on the trail) to Jamestown Settlement or Jamestown High School because you can bypass several busy road crossings in the James city county segment of the trail. read more

No beach. Some of the pictures made it look like there would be a place to get in the river. But it's all rocky and no sand. There's private property across the road that is beachfront, but no public access at the campground. We were disappointed about that. read more

This is a great little park. They have a two section public pool, one for the kids and the other a little bigger and deeper. There is a small dock where at any given time you will find a few folks fishing or crabbing. Volleyball, a driving range and camping are also available. I use this place as a starting point for the Capital to Capital bike trail. read more

This is a great place for some off season camping; particularly if you're fairly local, and just want to get away for a few days. Firstly, the reason I say off season is that the place gets pretty doggone busy during the 'prime' season! The wife and I don't like busy...at all. So we generally prefer places more remote than this for our camping excursions. But when we only have a few/several days, and it's not peak season, this is one of our favorite parks for car camping. The campsites are large enough that people aren't on top of each other, and most sites are on the water. It's a truly beautiful area. There are a number of nice hiking trails at the park, and most are pretty mild, as far as difficulty. The Virginia Capital Trail also runs next to the park, if you're into bike riding. Additionally, there are some nice caches in and around the park, if you enjoy Geocaching. I didn't give 5 stars for two reasons. First, the office staff aren't the friendliest. They aren't mean or rude, they just don't seem very nice; mostly younger guys (college kids, maybe?) who don't seem terribly interested in providing excellent customer service. You know the type, just there for the check; no smiles, no small talk, nothing extra. Secondly, they don't keep the bathrooms very clean. They aren't absolutely filthy, but certainly not cleaned too often, or by anyone very motivated to do a good job. Overall, if you're looking for a quick and easy off season camping trip, this'll fit the bill nicely. Or, if you're into crowds, or want your kids to have tons of other kids to play with, head there during late spring and summer. read more

This is one of the most beautiful campgrounds I have ever seen or stayed at the bathhouses are spotless and so are there bathrooms itself the view is incredible you're right on the river they have a pool that's being renovated and will be ready for this season a splash pad for the kids to play in on those hot summer days. Great place for car camping. Beautiful sunset view if you choose a campsite with water access. Dog friendly. Almost perfect other than the rude, unprofessional, "Debbie Downer" in guest services. He was completely annoyed that we stopped in at 4:45 to buy coffee creamer when they closed at 5. There were two other parties needing help and he was equally rude to them. Thanks for putting a HUGE damper on our carefree camping weekend. Complete jerk. read more

Picked the 3/4 hottest days of the summer to visit but what a nice place. A lot to do in the area and biking right outside the entrance.

Biked from Richmond, VA to the Chickahominy Campground on 2 June. For those of you who may not know, it is on the Trans Am Bike Route, a 4,300 mile trek from Yorktown, VA to Astoria, OR!! So... you might think it should be biker friendly. A little pricey for no frills camping- no hookups will cost you about $30 for a site. But hot showers do not cost ya! The real problem is the noise at night. This is the second time I have biked from Richmond to the Chickahominy Campground in as many months. Both times, same problem. Very loud and very inconsiderate campers!! Quiet time is supposed to be after 10 PM. First time camping there things didn't quiet down until after midnight. This last time, it lasted until almost 2 AM. Mentioned to staff. Nothing they can do as no one is on site. If it gets too bad, suggested I call police. Yeah, right!!! And then spend the night next to people after doing that??? Had to get up early in the morning each time and drag my butt back to Richmond on a bike with 35+ pounds of gear after little sleep. Not fun! So... if you want to party until late in the night, might be a great place to camp. But if you want/need to sleep, look elsewhere!! read more
