I was looking for a good hiking trail since the beautiful Noland Trail is closed due to Covid-19…read more This was a little hard to find since I used Google for directions. As yelp says it's off Osprey. The trail is going to be towards your right as you exit your car. The lake is towards your left. There was a closed gate right before the trail and I assume that was to let cars from going through since I seen somebody come out walking from there and that's how I found the trail. It's not as neatly maintained as Noland Trail and Sandy Beach Bottom Trail. It's a little confusing and lots of off paths. It was a little adventure and a good place to feel like your really lost in the woods

You go up a dirt path and cross the road. The first trail is on your right. It's roots and has some up and down portions. The bridges over the ditches are narrow and my youngest(and myself) often found ourselves struggling to stay in the middle. Lock your elbows on the downhill to stay straight! Some areas are tight between the trees, so know the trail before going too fast through it. At the end you are back on a wide path that you can go left to get back to parking...or go right toward more trails. We went to the far back for the 3rd trail. It used to be called advanced, but I like it better than the first. Less roots, but more tight in places. Some snakes back here like to lay on the trail...be loud and they slither away. Less up and down hills here but there is doozy near the end. Almost too steep before the bridge and you can catch your pedal here. I did a nice over the handle bars into the ditch and rolled back up. My youngest said it was the best fall ever! I also remember a few log portions....it's hard to pedal through those, so push hard! Our family likes to do things together. My husband wants a technical ride. My son is intermediate rider and my daughter and myself just want to survive. We have fun here. Highly recommend. Oh, side note: We haven't ever had issues with ticks in these woods. But always check when through playing the woods!

This is a hidden gem. I recently found this trail when looking for a MTB bike trail to ride. I was…read morevery surprised to find it. There is a little way to the actual trail so the "trail head" is longer than expected. Once you drop down from the parking lot you ride the fence line close to an apartment complex. You'll then cross an open area. Prior to dropping into the trail there is a very steep downhill section that curves to the right. I'm not a very experienced biker and had to hop off because of the grade and cut back. You'll cross a 18-24 in wide footbridge to get to the trail. This is where the fun begins. I ride left at the trail which is a big circle. There are sweeping downhills and pretty steep uphills for the first 1/4. Some tree roots and a small ditch to traverse. The second 1/4 is a choppy section that has some rock features and continues the uphill grade. A few of cut backs in this area but not too many to make the ride difficult. The third 1/4 is the part I dislike the most. It's only slightly up hill but has a lot of cut backs and some tight rides through trees and logs. It isn't technical, just a little too many tight squeezes. The last 1/4 is my absolute favorite. It is carved out of a old stream. It's all down hill (not massive just so you don't have to pedal). You travel up and down through the banks in the first part and then you travel right down the middle. Passing under a fallen tree and through the woods. It's so much fun! Overall a great trail. Not a lot of traffic but some. The trail is a big circle but it also has mini-trails that I've never tried that spoke through the outer circle. It's multi-use so you'll encounter walkers and joggers. It's only about a 2 1/2 mile trail so you'll have to ride it a lot for a good work-out.

Machicomoco State Park - Plenty of picnic and rest areas around

Today was a great day for the outdoors so we visiting another one of the Virginia State Parks…read more First let me say - I've never had a bad visit at the VASP's Besides the great weather we wanted to visit this newer state park. We enjoy camping in our RV and discovered this park had camping sites. So normally if possible we will check out a park before we drag our big beast RV to a location. I found the camping sites real nice and fairly large. None of the site look difficult to back into. However, they do have several pull through sites. None of the sites seem to have any cover - so you will need to deal with the sun and maybe summertime heat. Just know that. Some sites do have E/W. The dump station appears clean and easy in & out. The bath house was very clean As for the rest of the park. Just wonderful biking/walking path. Not sure but there are a few miles of them and all look flat. As for the trails to the water, they are rocked and again I'm sure a mountain biker can easily handle them. Not 100% sure though if bikes are allowed on them - so check before you do. I even seen an older lady driving her motorized wheelchair on these paths and she didn't seem to have any difficulty. The restroom area and picnic pavilions looked great and were very clean. Of course this facility is newer, so I hope they stay looking as great as they do today. I expect we will be back here with the RV in the Fall or Spring. I say this again due to no real shade in the campground area and no swimming avail.

Ok, this park is PERFECT. No, seriously. It has reached park perfection. There is the biggest (and…read moremost fun looking) playground that I've ever seen. There looks to be some sort of 'ship' for their imagination as well as several slides and merry go rounds and everything to keep the little ones busy. Going around this park, is a walking trail. It's not too long, its not too short. It's just right. You can leisurely stroll around the entire park, taking a break to watch the kiddies or...and this is the best part, watch the pooches. Among it's perfection, this park has three, VERY large dog parks. Two for the biggies (they need the room) and one GINORMOUS park for the Lil Napoleons (ever meet a small dog that didn't have a Napoleon complex?) This dog park is so big that after throwing the ball for 30 minutes, my very energetic poodle came up to me panting heavily & I swear I could hear "Uncle" as he dropped the ball & walked away. The grounds inside the dog parks are kept beautifully. There is a volunteer who faithfully cleans out the water bowls, picks up anything that parents left behind, supplies balls to all of the parks & for a bonus will even snuggle any pet needing a confidence boost. I am very hesitant in writing this review because if word spreads too far & fast, then everyone will want to come here & there will be a line. There are very friendly owners that come to this park, all different breeds. One day it will be all poodles, doodles, chichipoos, doxies...you just never know who you will meet!
