This 600-acre park impresses me. It's a pristine public recreation area found in James City, VA…read morewith many interesting components. My hub rode the 20 miles of mountain bike trails while I spent time walking the paths that wind through historical sites and open fields. While here, I stumbled upon the Williamsburg Botanical Garden. It features 800 species of native vegetation and entrance is free. Saw a wedding being set up; what a great site to have such a ceremony. The best surprise of all is the presence of one of the first Free Black Settlements in the US. There are 3 cabins, all furnished with items of the period (1803-1850), situated in a graceful clearing. The structures are easy to see inside and out, a trip back in time, for sure. A fellow Yelper writes that Freedom Park is one of the best places to visit if on a tight budget in the Williamsburg region. I heartily agree. There are no fees for anything, unlike other parks in the tri-city area (meaning Williamsburg/Jamestown/Yorktown). I found myself returning here for several days during the week that I was a tourist recently because this place is so enjoyable and tranquil.

Nice park to explore and walk through with a botanical garden to see. Place was well maintained…read more Some of the trails are bicycle friendly & paved. The admission is free. Parking and finding the place were very easy to find. One of the best things to do for free or on a low budget at Williamsburg.

Camping here was a good experience overall! Our neighbors were quiet enough--no rowdiness or…read morelate-night noise except for a surprising number of cars and golf carts going down our "road" all day until 10 or 11 p.m. A lot of people seem to drive to the bathhouse instead of walk. Speaking of the bathhouse, it was not disgusting but could definitely use a good scrubbing. It smelled awful the first night but not the rest of our trip. The water in the showers was hot and perfectly adjustable! Both the men's and women's sides have 3 stalls and 3 showers with a common changing area. The office closed at 5 every day, and the staff members there didn't seem enthused about answering my questions when I went in. The store is very sparsely stocked. No hygiene items; just fishing supplies, ice cream & drinks, and a couple of power adapters and the like. The pool was great!

Great camp site conveniently located in Williamsburg with attractions nearby. Perfect spot if…read moreyou're wanting to visit the historical triangle. We stayed in the glamping sites right along the river and loved our views. The bathrooms were clean and well kept. There were volleyball nets, a playground and kayaks available. I also saw a few boat launches with signs for fishing tournaments. It gets really windy along the river and in the tent but we were prepared. I imagine it gets pretty busy in the summer. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and you can't beat the location!

Ok, this park is PERFECT. No, seriously. It has reached park perfection. There is the biggest (and…read moremost fun looking) playground that I've ever seen. There looks to be some sort of 'ship' for their imagination as well as several slides and merry go rounds and everything to keep the little ones busy. Going around this park, is a walking trail. It's not too long, its not too short. It's just right. You can leisurely stroll around the entire park, taking a break to watch the kiddies or...and this is the best part, watch the pooches. Among it's perfection, this park has three, VERY large dog parks. Two for the biggies (they need the room) and one GINORMOUS park for the Lil Napoleons (ever meet a small dog that didn't have a Napoleon complex?) This dog park is so big that after throwing the ball for 30 minutes, my very energetic poodle came up to me panting heavily & I swear I could hear "Uncle" as he dropped the ball & walked away. The grounds inside the dog parks are kept beautifully. There is a volunteer who faithfully cleans out the water bowls, picks up anything that parents left behind, supplies balls to all of the parks & for a bonus will even snuggle any pet needing a confidence boost. I am very hesitant in writing this review because if word spreads too far & fast, then everyone will want to come here & there will be a line. There are very friendly owners that come to this park, all different breeds. One day it will be all poodles, doodles, chichipoos, doxies...you just never know who you will meet!

There is so much to explore here and offers something for every level of stepper. Whether you're looking for an intense hike or just a leisurely stroll, this is a great spot to be. The park has multiple entrances and different access points which would make multiple visits here still feel fresh. The park is very hilly and has a lot of inclines so keep that in mind. Once you get down to the park you'll be greeted by the lake trail where you can walk in a loop around the stunning lake. You can also do catch and release fishing here which I saw multiple people doing. While the lake trail is paved, this park also has a variety of cobblestone and natural trails as well. The walks are pretty shaded and all have stunning views of either greenery or some water component. This is a great walking spot if you're wanting to really dive into nature and experience some stunning views. This is definitely a more mild intensity walk mainly because of the inclines, they also have stair entrances to get on the trail as well. There were quite a few people on the trail, consisting of families, groups and even solo walkers. Despite its almost secluded nature this park felt relatively safe with the amount of people present. You may want a trail buddy if veering into the natural trails but the paved lake loop was pretty open making it feel safe for solo walkers. Overall, with its variety of entrances, views, and the moderate challenge, this park is a great choice for regular walkers and nature lovers!
