There are a few river beaches in our area, this is one of my favorites. I am amazed that there were people in the water today as there is no way it's warm enough yet. Still, as it's Mother's Day there was quite the crowd for the start of the season. This beach is right past the bridge so there is a bit of a current but as it's usually calm it's safe for all ages. It's a local gem. Who needs to go all the way down to VA beach when we have this? No sharks! read more

Yorktown Beach is so underrated. We love coming here year round as every season offers something to explore with the beach as a beautiful backdrop. We seen the Virginia Symphony perform here, attended various festivals, strolled the farmers market, had multiple picnics on the grass and the beach, and so much more. I think this is a great Virginia Beach alternative in the summer to save drive time and to have a smaller less crowded environment. Decided to check out this beach while visiting a family member who is stationed at Fort Eustis. Though it was a cold and windy day, the beach was beautiful and the Saturday farmer's market was fun. There were two main parking lots close to the beach, both with limited parking, but we were still able to find a spot within 10 minutes despite it being a holiday weekend. This is an adorable beach in a super cute town with free parking. What more could you want? Why did no one tell us that it is known for JELLYFISH. They were everywhere and my granddaughter got stung twice. I was wondering why it wasn't more crowded on a 100 degree summer day. I loooove the beach, and VB can be quite a drive (okay, it's the tunnels and traffic I cannot stand, really). But this place is just what you need if you're craving a mini getaway from the hustle and bustle! Perfect for a pleasant stroll along the beach/boardwalk, or if you want to catch some rays; there's something here for everyone. Along the beach there's a few points of interest for the History buffs - there's signs that explain the history of Yorktown beach, and with Yorktown Battlefield Colonial Park not far away, there's no better reason to make a day out of it. There's free parking available, picnic tables and picnic areas, and also a Ben and Jerry's store across from the beach (among a few other restaurants) - I don't need an excuse to come down here and enjoy a sunset with an ice cream or a drink, but if there ever was one, that would be it! What a hidden gem. They have a parking place and public bathroom and shower to wash off your sandy legs. If you get too hot, there is Ben & Jerry's ice cream to cool down. The water is floating water and it is so clean. There is small fish swimming in the water. The water is shallow. This is highly recommend for family to enjoy a water play. read more

First time visit on Friday. Small, clean, friendly beach. Brackish water and plenty of place to spread out a blanket or pop your umbrella. Small waves so no need to pack a boogie board unless you plan to float on it. Pets are only allowed on the sidewalk. Bathhouses and outside shower were all clean. Plenty of trash cans. The downtown boardwalk area with restaurants and ice cream shops was adorable. Free parking!!! We will be back. read more

This was a amazing day at the beach while visiting the Yorktown area. The beach isn't very big, so go early for a great sunning spot. Parking is free or you can ride the Ntl park shuttle down for free. Yes you have to have a pass to enter the park before you can ride. Its so worth it, and you can support our parks in the USA. There are several stops the bus makes along the way. The beach wasn't overcrowded and very clean. The scenery was unbelievable for a beach/ boardwalk. Lots of history if you wanna walk along the boardwalk. Great foodie spots, bookstores, and people just chilling have a great day catching some sun rays. Hopefully next time I can catch the sunset, Im sure its a beauty. read more

Nice beach. There's eatery's around if you're hungry while at the beach. You can also walk around and take in the beautiful scenery.

If you're looking for somewhere that is not as far of a drive as Virginia Beach, (and minus the Tunnel traffic) but still wanting some sand and sunshine, this place is great!! Not to mention FREE PARKING. There are shops around, so there are other things to do other than just the beach! Also restaurants, drinks, and a small boardwalk! There are some historic sights and points of interest. There are paved walkways and it's a great spot for kids, a family day, or a solo getaway! They also have nice bathrooms on the beach which is a plus!! There is usually room to have your own space on the beach, it's not as crowded as Virginia Beach! Definitely a fun day trip! read more

Yorktown beach is always a breath off fresh air, especially during the off-season! Richmonders this is a nice close option if you don't feel like driving down to VB or a little day trip. The parking is free which is a plus, there's a fishing pier, room to spread out and relax with an umbrella and blanket too! There's less traffic compared to a larger beach. We brought our little dog down for a little day trip from RVA although dogs aren't allowed to walk on the beach the paths to walk were pet friendly even have potty stations too. The flowers planted were pretty and there are plenty of benches. There are local shops as well as a favorite Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop! I'd recommend! read more

I absolutely love Yorktown beach! My favorite place to do lots of things. Whether it's too fast, relax, hangout or even walk the dog, it's so enjoyable and very family friendly. The pirates festivel was this weekend and it was a great experience. Lots of different vendors from food, jewelry, beauty, animals, etc etc. The vendors pricing were very affordable and the festivel was free! Loved every moment of it. It's not a big beach, but it is a nice small one of you want that beach environment workout the major crowding. Riverwalk resturaunt is my favorite. It's right on the water and the seafood is fresh daily. There's also a Ben & Jerrys and other resturaunts and sights as well. read more

This beach is located only a few minutes from Yogi bear resort if you are looking to stop somewhere after camping. The beach is nice, social distancing signs are all over however masks aren't mandatory, I only saw a few people wearing them. The beach isn't huge, it felt too crowded for my comfort so we chose to stay all the way on the left side of the beach away from the main beach. The water is calm and perfect for small children to wade in. The beach is not as clean as I hoped so we had to keep our flip flops in the entire time for fear of injuring our feet on trash or broken shells. Despite this, the view is beautiful with areas of shade and it wasn't too windy so I didn't have to worry about my umbrella blowing away. There is plenty of free parking and one parking garage. There are restaurants, shops, and several different bathrooms. Bathrooms were clean, contain baby changing tables and one was air conditioned. There is an open public outside shower area to wash all the sand away. There is also trolley stops if you chose to do sightseeing on the trolley. Just a 2 minute drive away from the beach is a museum. There is lots to do in this little area. We will definitely be back and hope to try the ice cream next time! Oh and dogs are not allowed here. read more

Yorktown Beach is one of our favorite escapes when the weather is nice. Easy way to enjoy the water without driving all the way to VA Beach -- it's particularly nice with kiddos since the bay water here is calm. The only downside is that in the peak of summer, this location is usually crawling with jellyfish. So make sure you're prepared for the occasional run in. Parking is generally a challenge, but they do have a parking garage that usually has spots available, especially if you go at non-peak hours. Lots of cute little shops here, and plenty of sun and sand for a nice family day out. They also have the historic boat that tours on the water throughout the summer, which is a fun activity for kids. read more

This is quite possibly the best beach in Virginia. What about Virginia Beach, Lauri? Not my scene. It's loud, crowded, expensive, and hotels are nowhere to be found. If you're a college kid looking for a beach turn up, that's the one for you! If you're a family that wants a quick beach trip, that's for you! Yorktown Beach is for people like me who want anonymity, hot sun, neat lunch spots, and cool water to wade in. What makes Yorktown beach so great? + It's quiet! Not many people know about this location and that's the best thing about it! + Ample space to spread out + Minimal waves-- perfect environment for wading and legit swimming! + Water's not too deep-- Awesome for walking in just to cool down from the heat + The town! There are so many cute shops and restaurants nearby to try. There's a historic street that's closed to "motor vehicles" that I can't wait to explore. + Bathrooms-- Plenty of easy, clean accessible bathrooms + Parking is A+++. You literally park right on the beach. I absolutely love this place (Can you tell?) and we've already planned to go back a few more times before summer's over. I was kind of bummed to not have a tropical vacation planned this year, but Yorktown Beach is the perfect thing to tide me over until 2018! read more

You want a beach that's NOT crowded, small, clean, and has a handful of cute shops and restaurants around? Come here! The water isn't clear like Florida beaches of course, but what beach in Virginia is? There's a section near Riverwalk Landing that is the more popular side, but as you walk further down, there are less people. It even feels and looks like a private beach in some areas. There is free parking (2 story parking garage, but to get to the 2nd level, you actually have to drive around and up a hill ; it's not connected.) Restrooms are clean also. That's a biggie! We enjoyed our day in Yorktown! Beautiful Riverwalk Landing, enjoyed some history, took tons of pics, had lunch at one of the restaurants, and enjoyed this beach...it makes for a nice little getaway! Totally recommend! And we shall return. read more

Parking is scarce here, especially on a Friday or Saturday night. If you want to park anywhere near the beach you need to arrive early. I do like that there are a variety of restaurants here and you have the option to fish or swim. There is also quite a bit of history provided along the walkway, which makes it interesting and a great place to take the kids. Unfortunate side to the restaurants is that they are pretty pricey. Farmer's market during the weekend, which is nice. Plenty of vendors. Always cool events going on. Love that there's a Ben & Jerry's Shop here, also! Good place to take the family for a couple hours. read more

First time at this beach and I must say I really enjoyed it. It's quite small for a beach but they have so many more things in that area that you can do. They have cute little shops and a free trolly that takes you around historic Yorktown. At first I was a little put off by the smell of dead fish by the water but I'm assuming this is because it had been raining in the area. I'm crossing my fingers that it doesn't smell like this all the time. It really only smelled bad when it got a little windy. There are no lifeguards at this beach but it's roped off at a certain point in the water. There are bathrooms and a rinse off shower which is always a plus. I will say that one of the reasons this beach is losing a star is because of parking. Parking is definitely limited so try and get there early. Overall, this beach is great for a day trip. read more

We had no idea that this beach would be this popular. When we first drove by, it was packed. We came back later in the afternoon and it was better. The kids had a great time digging in the sand and throwing a football while in the water. My husband and I were able to sit in the shade and monitor the kids on the path right above them. This beach was definitely worth the 45 minute drive. We went early in the morning around 9:30 and there was only 3 or 4 other families there. The water was very calm so if you planned on surfing not the beach for you. But if you planned on relaxing on the other hand... Lots of cool seasells and rocks, and small beach animals like snails, crabs and oysters. Beautiful sight, sand was warm, water was warm. The little town even had shops with cool artwork for sale and produce shops. People were friendly, parking was free. I didn't want to leave! Definitely suggest visiting!! read more

This beach is a Super hidden gem of shops sand and sun. The Yorktown beach is simply marvelous with history and sights. It's a very clean beach with great parking and plenty of clean bathrooms. There was also boat tours available and some pretty cool bars and restaurants to compliment a nice beach stroll. The trees were perfectly placed to provide shade on the board walk. Aside from the fact that it was blazing hot.... it was wonderful! The beach area was active and we walked through the farmers market on Saturday as well as another area with live music and fun craft booths. We enjoyed relaxing on a bench, in the shade of a tree and people watching. It's a great area for a stroll. I would just advise to go during the cool of the day! read more

This is my go to beach! If you hate crowds, or loads of tourists, this is your spot. We drive to Yorktown from Richmond, it only takes about an hour. We love this beach because it is smaller, and never too "crazy". There is plenty of parking near the beach, just a small walk down a hill. I would suggest getting here early, so you can get a good parking spot and a good spot on the beach. The earlier you go in the day and the later, the less crowded. Please beware there are jellyfish in the water. We have seen them 3 out of the 6 times we've been there, and got stung on our last trip (today). They are not always there, but it is good to know to watch out for them, don't let this stop you from coming, I promise it is very worth it! I absolutely love the location, there are cute little restaurants near by to eat at if you get hungry, and a restroom/changing room/shower station on the beach. read more

I have lived here for many years and enjoy walking here daily. The atmosphere is always amazing. The people that are not from here have been questionable the last year. I smell drugs, and I seen someone selling drugs on Tobacco Road. A lot of those shady individuals are there early in the morning. It's sad Bc I come here and pay taxes to live here. These new characters are not wanted by us individuals who are living here. read more

I went to Yorktown beach and I loved it and so did my boys (4 and 18 months). They have paths into the beach area which are super helpful if you have a stroller or wagon, it's super clean, convenient parking, and cute shops to explore. The waves are also super calm and there's lots for them to see with boats, a bridge, and a free trolley that you can ride. read more

Great small beach, but tons of college people in the summer months. The restaurants are busy and small, but taste great. The water can be kinda dirty sometimes and jelly fish are bad in the midst of July. Other than this, it's a beach and it's close for the locals to have fun! read more
