LOVE this place!! Family owned, friendly folks. All sites shaded, very well kept. Pool, lots of play areas for kids. Bus service to all attractions and all of Williamsburg stops here. $1.50 gets you an all day bus pass and kids ride free. Next to a train track. If that bothers you, it may be an issue. But, I love the clackity clack sound of a train and found it peacefully soothing. I also loved the nesting Robins and baby birds in the trees and on the playground equipment. First off lots of positives!! Great friendly staff, immaculate bathrooms, really fun playground for the kids, giant connect 4 and Giant JENGA games and a great location to colonial Williamsburg. Things to know- 1.sites are very close 2 the train is really an issue -- our first night the train came by 3 times. And these were LONG.....trains. The entire RV shook Two of the cabins back right up to the tracks. 3 the shuttle is not a campground one but it is the excellent public transport system that stops at the entrance. Takes a transfer to second bus or a twenty minute walk from transportation hub to colonial Williamsburg visitor center. We needed to call an Uber at the end of the day as the kids were just too tired to make the 20 minute walk to catch the bus to get back to Anvil My advice is to get a site against the Road to minimize noise - read more

Wonderful place to stay with lots to do at the grounds and within a short driving distance. Our family of four (+dog) stayed for the weekend. We didn't get to experience all the great things Anvil usually has going on due to a severe thunderstorm Friday evening into the night. But we enjoyed our stay. We got our free snow cones and hiked the trails across the road (BEWARE OF TICKS... we found plenty on us!). I would probably rate higher if I had a smaller rig. We have a 40 foot class A making the campground seem pretty small to navigate. The staff were friendly and had a good camp store. The site was clean with good hookups. However, the train on one side of the campground and highway close on the other makes it noisy during sleep. This is out of their control. read more

BUYER BEWARE. Worst campground experience ever. No where on the website does it say that the tent sites are about 15 feet from train tracks. These trains run throughout the night and are SEVERAL MINUTES LONG. Literally shortly before you check-in to camp--long after you have reserved and made all your travel plans--you will get an email basically saying--Heads up, you're sleeping next to freight trains, but if you want moved ask.--BUT THERE IS NO WHERE TO GO. You pay $50 a night to not sleep! So we left in the middle of our reservation to go elsewhere, which when you are travelling and have long planned out your vacation is not fun. It is dishonest to not put this information on their website upfront and they don't deserve the business. read more

Just took vacation to the Williamsburg area. I'll start by saying my wife is not a camper. Her idea of roughing it is a holiday inn. I talked her into staying here in one of their cabins. I told her if she had any issues when we got there that we would leave and get a hotel. Luckily that was not necessary. This is the nicest campground I have ever stayed at and I do a fair amount of camping around where we live. Their bathrooms are immaculate and I'm positive that's what sold my wife. I was so impressed with every aspect of this campground. The store is well stocked. The staff are all extremely friendly and helpful. And if you have a fur baby they are very accommodating. The only place you can't have them is in the cabins. I assume because they are brand new (less than two months old). Definitely highly recommend this campground and if I'm ever in the area again I would love to stay again. read more

This is a delightful little campground, with extraordinarily friendly staff. (Thank you Brandyn!) It is very clean, well organized with the nicest bathrooms and showers I've encountered in a long time. My original intention was to stay just two nights, but I've already amended it to four nights (and probably more). They also offer a Good Sam discount. Yes, there is an Amtrak line nearby, but the trains pass very swiftly without blowing their horn. It has not been a problem for me and the few times the trains do roll by does not reduce the incredible valve that Anvil Campground offers. read more

Nice smallish campground. Definitely from a bygone era when everything was smaller. Narrow roads with unnecessary aggressive speed bumps. We were in a 40' rig and the trains rocked us all night long- not a word about that in their web site. I never really saw the bathroom very clean but they brag about it so I guess they make an effort. If you have a tent, pop-up, or trailer it would be a fun place to bring the family. Big rigs towing be careful. The folks here are real nice and they are putting in the effort, I just wasn't what we were looking for. read more

When you check out this campground all you hear are good things and we now know why. This has to be the cleanest one we have ever been to. It is not a huge one but it is comfortable and very welcoming. The owners are 4th generation owners and very warm and friendly. Pets are very welcome here also. read more

It's hard to find anywhere that excels at customer service and the folks at Anvil have it down! We came up from Virginia Beach for two nights during the winter. It's hard to find any campgrounds that are even open during February. I called the same day, spoke with Chris and he was very pleasant and welcoming on the phone. We arrived pretty late but had no problem getting into the site and getting hooked up. The new super sites are really nice. The new utilities pedestals are great. Nice new gravel, landscaping cable and pretty fast wifi. It's nice to be able to check email and keep up with family when out on the road. It is a small campground but has quite a lot to offer. There s a pool, arcade, playgrounds laundry and camp store. They also offer discount coupons for local attractions. I'm sure it's busy during the summer months but for a winter retreat to just get out of the house we were more than satisfied. As for the train complaints, I could see it being pretty loud is you were tenting or a popup buy it was not loud in our travel trailer. No issues sleeping. We will be back and look forward to it. read more

8/8/18 Very clean and staff was nice but other than that everything said about the Campground was magnified. Our premium spot was so little we barely were able to put our slide outs out. Campers were packed in like sardines. Traffic 100 yards on one side and very active tracks on the other side. We would not stay here again. We have stayed at nicer RV parks for the same price that were nicer. The reviews and pictures are very deceiving. read more

We thought the Anvil campground was great during the day. Yes, the sites are close but the manager was very accommodating and gave us two sites for the price of one. The pool is small but clean. The service was exceptionally friendly and the store and arcade were good diversions in the evening. However the train tracks are a killer! Unless you are a very heavy sleeper (I'm talking like a drug induced coma) you can't get more than an hour of sleep at a time. I also agree that you should not be fooled into thinking that the public transit is a "shuttle bus" The day time was nice but don't expect to get any sleep! read more

Called to stay Thursday night. I was told since it's memorial weekend I needed to book 3 nights. I said it's Thursday and they said that the weekend...who has heard of that? Drove by later and saw tons of spaces open. Doesn't make any business sense since we were only one night. 06-09-14 update The owner contacted me to make things right. He said he has instructed staff to change the policy Since I will not be back through there I will assume the best and figure that the policy has been changed. read more

Pop Up campers and Tent Campers...please be aware that the trains are VERY close, run often, are VERY loud, and are fast. This is not a site where they creep through chug chugging in the night. These trains are running full tilt, fully loaded, whistles blaring at the intersection and about 50-75 feet from most sites. The tent sites are NEXT to the tracks. The campers have a one lane road between them. It shook our pop up so hard on the second night that it threw the jack off level. I had visions of us being wiped out if one of those cars derailed. I will not stay here again. I love the fact that the staff was super nice and the campground was clean. But I came to relax...not worry for my safety or sanity. There was no sleep to be had. The trains ran nearly every half an hour apart from Midnight until 6am the first night. The website touts that they have created family memories for 58 years. Anvil Campground - Train. Right there - Campgrounds Near Me - Williamsburg, Virginia

So far we've been here 6 hours. The bath houses are being remodeled so there's only the men's open & it's temporarily a unisex including the showers. The Digital cable is grainy how's that possible & the train that I was assured wasnt that bad "is" that bad. On the good. It's clean & has a very nice staff. It's Passport American friendly. I'll be updating this after our stay is over. Ok I know it's a bit early to update but here it goes. The bathroom issue was improved by the owner offering a cottage that was open for us to shower in. The cable was ALL MY BAD. I had the cable laying to close to the power cord outside and it caused an interference. Go me As for the train oh well. I only heard it once last night and yes I'm in a popup camper. I figure if you know going in its your choice to stay. Just don't stay up against the track line. This place is very nice, clean and the people treat you well. What more could you ask for. I'd come back if I'm going to revisit this area. It's got the shuttle which im waiting for right now. Spots are rather tight and close together, and like many, we noticed the trains but for us it added to the charm. Overall we highly recommend this campground to RVers from anywhere. read more

This is NOT a campground for those who are using tents. It is very clean and the staff is exceptionally friendly and helpful. But, tents are placed literally 20-30 feet from an active train track. Try sleeping through trains blasting through every other hour. You can't. I did not like the lack of privacy in the camp sites either. read more

There is a train that goes by the back of campground but it is not terribly loud and the drone of the tracks is very cool. We spent halloween weekend there. What a great bunch of kids trick or treating for an hour and other campers were pleasent too. Store had most camping essentials staff was so nice. Little noisy from the occasional train rolling on the tracks, but it was bearable. Great game room. Didn't need the bath/showers but i saw folks using it so it must have been nice. An excellently-run, clean, well maintained RV park. Staff was helpful and friendly. We paid for two nights and informed the nice young lady we may be leaving before spending the second night and she offered a late checkout (3 pm) and refund for the second night. We certainly appreciated her offer but declined and stayed until 7 pm, paying the second night in support of the park during the Covid season. Only negative is the train which woke us up at 7:30 am. We like to sleep in sometimes. Great park otherwise. read more

This campground and it's hosting staff are absolutely amazing! We were late checking and unfamiliar with the campground. It seemed a bit small at first but then became a huge destination. The amenities are wonderful, a heated pool all year round, playground for the children, a playroom for all ages, cornhole games and much much more. The showers and restrooms were amazingly updated and ALWAYS clean As well as the ground's themselves. If we had questions or concerns we could always go to the office where we were met with smiles and answers. This campground has everything you'll need and don't forget to bring your fur babies too. Anvil is very pet friendly with a water bowl by the office door and treats behind the front desk. Small playgrounds are on property to as well as poop stations ( they supply the bags). There is a beautiful walking trail across the street for everyone to use and our big dog loved it. Thank you Ray and Amanda and all the staff that helped make our stay really fun and memorable. The location is great. Close to all attraction via WATA. WATA was very clean and always on time. We went from Anvil to Colonial Williamsburg twice and from Anvil to Busch Gardens once. The staff is great and extremely friendly and helpful. The only issue we had was the lot was not level and there was few grass areas for our dog to use. Yes I would stay here again. The trains were not an issue for us. Stayed 7 days and they became part of the relaxing atmosphere. read more

But if you enjoy your sleep and like it quiet at night, this is not the place for you. There are railroad track on the other side of the road and it seemed like one went by every hour. The Williamsburg bus has a stop just for this campground. It doesn't run late at night but it is a very nice feature. This illustrates the kind of place this is. The recent bathroom remodel is amazing. The shower areas had an issue where water in the private changing section could not drain back into the shower and kids especially would end up with two inches of water. Our next time back they have done the MAJOR work necessary They really care. My children absolutely love the trains being right on top of us! And the playgrounds have always been great and now there is new equipment there too! read more

The Anvil Campground was WONDERFUL. There were many things that were great, but the number one thing was the proximity - right in the middle between Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown. The people from Anvil were super friendly from the person who took our reservation over the phone to the front desk (Chris was awesome and on top of everything!) and even the maintenance man. - The sites were spacious and easy to navigate. - The hookups looked new and everything was in working order and easy to use. - The restrooms were very clean, and extra heat was brought in for unseasonably cold weather to ensure campers' comfort. - The camp store was well equipped with the little parts you sometimes need. - With three (3) separate playgrounds, our grandkids were thrilled. - The teens liked the variety in the arcade room. - I liked that there were 4 washers and 4 dryers in the laundry room with a change machine in the arcade room, and that it was open 24 hours (many laundry rooms close by 9pm). - The younger ones were enthralled with the Amtrak and coal trains on the nearby tracks (some might mind the noise, but our RV is well insulated so we didn't hear the trains when we were sleeping). The kids enjoyed counting the passing cars. Did we mention the smiling faces of the staff? This is a family-owned campground and you can tell that they love what they are doing and focus on keeping their customers happy. We were very pleased with this campground and will return! read more

Stayed here two nights to visit the area. Cannot speak highly enough about this campground. Clean, well manicured grounds and sites. While not paved the rocks on the sites are ample and dust free. The rain came and the site drained quickly. Staff and owner are friendly, courteous and helpful. In all my years of camping I have not met a friendlier group. Close to Colonial Williamsburg plus Yorktown and Jamestown. Highly recommend. read more

We stayed one night on way to the OBX. Staff was very friendly and helpful. The campground was very clean and well maintained. The restrooms/shower area was small but updated and very clean. The campground itself is small and sits between a busy road and working railroad tracks. We were told the train does make noise at night while booking. We were able to stay past the checkout time with a nominal fee so we could tour the area before leaving. I would stay a short time again despite the noise (which with our air didn't seem to bother us) because it was so well maintained and close to area attractions. read more

While there a many positives: very clean bathrooms, excellent location convenient to Colonial Williamsburg and Busch Gardens, super friendly and courteous staff. However, the smallness of the campground trumps (for us), all the positives. We have a 39' fifth wheel and we got a pull through site. We barely got out of the site. The train tracks nearby didn't bother us but I can see why tenters and pop ups would not be happy. I have never been to a campground this small and if we hadn't reserved a pull through, I would not have liked the other sites where you back into a site with another camper on the other side. They really pack you in there. We enjoyed our stay as the staff was nice and the bathrooms were very nice, but it was way too small and tight for us to want to come back. read more
