This place is pretty defining for Spenard; A huge cluster-f*** of different bars, people, dirty bathrooms, cranky bouncers, and hot bartenders. Came here for the Tucker Max and Time Bandits showing on Thursday and drank copious amounts of crap beer at $2 a pop before 9PM. Met Tucker Max, Nils, fake Sling Blade, and many different D list groupies. Epic night. At the end of the night, too drunk, I took a cab home and found myself holding some dude's North face jacket. I can't explain this at all. This place seems to suck all sobriety and conscious thought, so be careful. Whooo, you've been warned. read more

Maybe I need to go to this place on a night other than Halloween, but this place was terrible. I get the whole "mulitple clubs in one building" concept. It's been done - and better. Hell, there's a place in OKC I avoid like the plague that pulls this concept off 10x better. This "club" is nothing more than a bunch of rooms in an oversized log cabin with surly bartenders, even surlier bouncers, and an overwhelming aura of date-rape drugs and barely-legal coeds who are all about the Jagerbombs. Seriously, it's a firetrap; the hallways are too narrow, the ceilings are too short, and if I want to feel like I'm at a house party, I will go to an actual house where I don't have to pay $9 for a badly-made vodka tonic. I'm sure the newly-minted 21-year-olds just salivate over places like this, but if you have any standards, go to a place where you don't have to worry about getting served a roofie colada. read more

As lowly as this place seems from the other reviews, I've got to give Koots props! They are monopolizing on the layout they have set up for sure. There has got to be 6 or 7 rooms. Each having their own bar. One with beers, a sort of fratty theme and fuse ball tables. Another entirely covered with bras donated by the fellow lady patrons. This room includes a slanted floor in the bar area, some little tables and a juke box! There is a stage for live music in another room which I guess is referred to as the "main" room. A live DJ plays rap and hip hop in the adjacent room to the Main Room and has plenty of room for dancing and getting your crunk on. There is even a hallway connecting a few of the rooms and in that hallway is a stationed eatery area where you can order pizza by the slice, sit and enjoy some people watching! The bouncers are a little feisty but with a little smile and pinch of their face cheeks, they warm up!! You do get a meat market sort of vibe her but if you are looking for some diversity, you have come to the right place!! (I have no idea how much drinks are here...I wouldn't have remembered even if I had paid for one anyway b/c they're strong!). read more

Went with friends for the first time ever and had a horrible experience. One of the female bartenders, who appeared intoxicated, was extremely rude and began to berate my friend when she found out he was in the military, because apparently she thinks anyone who is in the military is an idiot. Conversation was great until jobs came up, then it went south. Being in a military town she should be more careful about what she says. I told her she was being extremely disrespectful and we left. As paying customers we will not be going back. Drinks were weak and overpriced. Bar was dirty and there is no reason to ever go back. read more

HIGHLIGHT of our trip! I had been warned about this place and the many different themed rooms .. either you LOVE it or you HATE it. I HEART Koots!! If we could have spent every night here we would have. Yes, we liked it that much. Now... we thought the price of the drinks in relation to the size was great! I was on a Vodka Red Bull kick at the time and was so excited by the price to size ratio I took a few photos for the people back East. We spent most of the night in the back room and went outside for a bit .. but the "cold" deterred me from staying out too long. The room with all of the dangling bras was both gross and cool at the same time .. made me wonder.. do you just take it off and staple it to the wall? Or do you come with an extra in your bag? The "club" room was a bit much for our "relaxed" group .. although I did find the stage dancers to be very entertaining as did the gentlemen in our group. The music was great .. typical bar music. Some 80's, 90's, Rap, Hip-Hop and such. It was not crowded so you could move around and enjoy the kitchy stuff they have on the walls. I found it hilarious that they had such random memorabilia on the walls .. Rod Stewart poster? Really?? The clientele was very laid back and the bartenders were attentive .. much more than I can say for 95% of the Hoboken bars. Hoboken bartenders take note .. when I am standing at the bar with money in my hand you may want to ask " Can I get you anything?" Just a thought !! This is a conglomeration of 10 bars under the same roof. It is so hard to write a review because my experiences are so different for each room I went to. But there is no doubt that this is the best bar in alaska. Saturday I went and saw a screaming death metal band, Sunday I went and watched vibrating dildos on a slanted bar with a thousand bras hanging from the ceiling. What? I wanted to like this place since we got multiple recommendations from locals, but we were pretty disappointed. For starters we arrived at the bar around10pm hoping to still order some food and unwind with a few drinks after a long day. This is a dive bar- so do not make the same mistake as us and order a glass of wine and a mixed drink. Stick with the pitchers of beer like everyone else. The red wine tasted like vinegar and was spoiled. The mixed drink was horrible- how do you screw up a cranberry vodka? I had to fix it by remixing the cranberry and asking for limes. Two gross drinks for $13 in a dive bar! Should've stuck with the beer. Also, no food at 10pm. Kitchen is closed. That was irritating. The DJ was playing techno pop music crap that was giving me a headache and I had to watch one guy fist pumping like he was on Jersey Shore and there was a band groupie with two moves "hip, hip, hair flip". The saving grace for giving it an additional star instead of 1, is that they had a pretty good band playing that evening. Thee Homicidal Supermodels were really entertaining and I needed to be drunk to be in a place like this. They had a couple singers with awesome voices and they broke out with the jams. I doubt I'll ever be back, but anyone venturing to Chilkoot's late at night, stick with the beer and go for the live entertainment. read more

Chilkoot Charlie's (also known as 'Koots'). Infamous in Alaska. Celebrity appearances galore. This place is crazy and purely Alaskan. Some people love it. Some people hate it. I'm going to write a neutral and honest review- but this place is getting a 5 star rating from me, because I'm in the group that just genuinely adore this place. So- let's start with the bad. This place is crazy; and by crazy, I mean there have been shootings here. Fights break out. Drinks get spilled. People get sloppy. Heck- there have been random hook-ups taking place in the parking lot on more than one occasion. This place gets crazy and it's fully of crazy people. It's the biggest bar in the 'Spenard' part of Anchorage and it's actually quite a ways away from the usual bar scene found in downtown. It's kind of its own little drinking area, and typically the people who go here are not bar-hopping, but rather coming to spend the entire night here. This is one big bar with many smaller bars within it. No matter the feel you're going for- you'll find a part of this bar that fits the bill. There's a country area with ambiance lighting, booth seating, and country music playing. There's a rap area with strobe lights, loud bass, and weirdly dark corners that I wouldn't dare go into. There's a hip-hop/ pop music corner with what I like to call 'white girl dancing music' (with songs by Kesha, Drake, and other similar hit artists). There's a live-music area where typically they play rock music, but when a DJ is there it's usually more of a techno vibe. There is seating everywhere and a large outdoor smoking area. There are multiple bars so you can be served a drink in many parts of the establishment. There's a pool table area and a pizza place. They have such a wide array of alcohol. Something for everyone. Cocktails, hard liquor, beer, wine- you name it, they have it. Customize it. The bartenders are okay. The female bartenders don't typically want to serve females (because they think they'll get tipped less), so it's frustrating as a female to try and get a drink. Opt for getting a male bartender's attention instead- they're usually a bit better about serving females and males efficiently. I know a few of the female bartenders that work here- so don't get me wrong. Some of them are sweethearts, but they're smart- they want a big tip- and that typically comes from male customers. This place has everything from a 'wall of bras' to pictures of celebrities who've been there to a floor covered in sawdust (probably to hide the stickiness of the drinks that are spilled every night). They sometimes have comedy shows and have featured some VERY funny people. They also have a ton of events such as 'Spenardy Gras' (similar to Mardi Gras) and a 'Pirate's Pub Crawl After Party' (a continuation of the fun of the infamous Pirate Pub Crawl). The place can get a bit dirty and the people can get a bit too drunk. But if you want to dance (and I LOVE dancing) this is the place to go. You have three dance floors to choose from and three different DJs. They play great music and are always full of talent. If you want to dance the night away (and probably get hit on by a few too-drunk dudes) this is the place to go. It can get a bit wild, but it's never dull and the music is amazing. I'm a dancer- it's what I love to do, so that's why I'm a fan of Koots. With that being said, my boyfriend (who's a drinker) hates this place because it's loud and crowded and dirty. So it just depends on your taste. Go in with caution. If you want something crazy, this is it. If not- try looking downtown for your scene. read more

Maybe I'm an old bag at the ripe age of 30 however, I'm not much for koots. I do like to go when I get a wild hair up my keister to do the "white girl dance" and embarass myself and my friends. That or if a good band is playing (IE Berlin) I will go. Usually I avoid this place like it's got a raging case of genital herpes! There's always way too many people, the staff is usually too busy to be friendly and there's way too many fights. I've been sprayed with blood, caught in the middle of fights just trying to put my coat in the check in, the drinks are pricey and it gets way too hot in there. And I'm quite sure getting "too hot" is NOT from menopause. Well, this is where you find the Alaska Wildlife - That's for sure! OMG! This place was packed on a Friday night, each and every corner, room, section. This is definitely a total get-drunk-as-a-skunk and pick up and HO you can. And damn, everyone there was both. I was about the oldest specimen there. Went about 10-1am with friends who wanted me to experience "ALASKA NIGHTLIFE" hahaha - ok, pass! For the record, I had 1 drink - I wanted all my facilities about me here. Live band, playing total random music, each song had a 15-year gap: from dance to country, to guns and roses ?!? I would suggest no purse. It's hard enough to keep your drink from being spilled and you get knocked around every few seconds. I'd suggest it for a looky-loo. Haha what a crazy place! It's a super fun concept. Tons of bars inside and a weird Russian mob feely area upstairs. Just go look. It's awesome. 5 stars for concept, something different, and weirdness. I'm seeing bad reviews on the bouncers, but they've always been really nice and funny when I've been there. I take a little bit off for higher than necessary prices, and a lot off because I've never once been there without having to argue with the bartenders for trying to charge me for drinks I didn't order. I get it, bartending is a hard job and there's lots of people to keep track of, but if I only had 1 beer, I only had one beer. Great bartenders, usually a rockin live band, and 4 different rooms with different music to rock out to. Not going into details, because you need to go here and experience it for yourself. bird lounge rock room, if its your friends first time here, tell the bartender its their first time and they want to blow the horn. just do it. rap on the big floor and you can go upstairs for another bar, main floor has pop or a live band that kicks ass weekends and 2 bars. disco/electronic floor for your purple rain action, and they play tiny bubbles at closing time, so it's really quirky and cool. Even if the line is really long, it moves fast and usually fun and entertaining because you will see drunk people acting a fool, slipping on the ice, getting kicked out the front door, or all three. The drinks aren't cheap (except for cheap beers they have for part of the day), but that's par for the course in Alaska.... As out of towners, we weren't sure where to go. We ended up at koot's and it was a fun time! Early in the evening it was a perfect atmosphere for casual drinking at the bar and chatting as a group as well as with the bartenders. The food in the bar is also surprisingly good and cheap. I got an order of garlic knots and ate them all! Later in the evening, there was live music. The band was super good, very talented singers. I would definitely recommend koot's for people who like to be able to chat in a bar, eat food, not pay too much, and enjoy live music. read more

I don't know where to begin. This place was so fascinating. There were bars after bars after bars with wacky decor and varied activities (pool, dancing, karaoke, OH MY!) as well as a slew of different things on draft (Lambic, what?!). If you can get through the Big-Brother-Is-Watching front door without wondering if they'll soon be taking a blood sample or if you might get robbed, it is something to see. read more

This is must place to visit if you ever go to Anchorage Alaska. They have 5 different rooms that play your type of music. Every room has unique music: hip hop, country, jazz, rock/pop, etc. Drinks are cheap and very easy to get since they have bars all over the place. Front of the building looks small but once you get in, there are connecting rooms everywhere. It is so much fun and lots of people. If you ever get a chance to make it to back of the building where this room is slanted (feels like you are in willy wonka and the chocolate factory). This room wasn't filled with chocolate but panties and bras that women left hanging on walls and ceiling. If you ask Alaskans where to go for nightlife in Anchorage, this name will always come up. The DJ's are usually good and the bands they have come in are really the only reason worth coming. Wow! What a night we had there! We went in to have a few drinks and to play trivia, Geeks who Drink. Just know our team was horrible but it was a lot of fun! I can say I am glad we took a taxi there! Neither of us could have drove home. This place is awesome! They have lots of different themed bars around and they also have live bands. After our trivia a band was playing and people were dancing. They also have the Birdhouse bar which is a replica of an older alaska bar with peoples unmentionables hanging from the ceilings and on the walls. Make sure you ask the host to try the ptarmigan whistle when you are in the birdhouse, it is an unforgettable experience! Drinks are strong! read more

My boyfriend and I are visiting from Seattle and had done some research and found this is great place to go and he wasn't wrong! You go into a place and walk through a scanner.... of something, who knows and they scan your ID and take your picture and pair it with your ID. We went around 930 on a Thursday night and listened to the band that way playing before karaoke started (they were pretty good) and I love the set-up of the stage... lots of people dancing... some younger, some older. Pitcher of MGD was $13 and they also had some pizza.. not sure when they started serving that, but I saw it when it was bar time. I really like this place because it has an awesome set-up. There are tons of separate rooms for different things... one room has a DJ, another a band, another pool table, another karaoke, and I am sure there is more. With that said, there are multiple bars to order drinks so I never had to wait in line for a drink. Karaoke finally started in what they call the "Ice Room" (the bar actually has some frost/snow) and it was unique. The DJ and MC were so awesome, friendly, and funny... definitely one of the best karaoke bars I've been to. For what it's worth, I live probably 5,000 miles from this place and have only been there once. I can see where it can get a little out-of-hand, but this review is from my experience only. We went there a few weeks ago and were lucky enough to catch the dueling piano show. If you haven't seen that yet, go! It's tremendous. Sit in the front row, you'll be part of the act and get free shots to boot. It's a guaranteed good night out. At the end of the four-hour night night, I was pretty rocketed up so after chatting with the piano player for a bit I order my bill, and it was...$16. I was stunned. If (when?) I ever find myself in Anchorage again I'll be sure to return. But I do have a vague recollection of some seedy looking characters hanging out in front as we walked in, so I wouldn't be surprised if it gets a little rowdy at times (especially reading the previous review for this place). read more
