While in OC, my friend and I grabbed an early weekday lunch at KooKoo Grill. The place wasn't very busy, and the parking situation was super easy. The dining capacity was rather small with enough tables and countertop space to hold a couple of dozen customers. The menu featured Asian fusion offerings of the fast food variety. The Kookoo Balls and Kookoo Fries did look interesting but were probably too filling as I wasn't extremely hungry. I decided to order a basic item in the form of a Chicken & Beef Teriyaki Bowl. My dining companion selected the Stir Fried Udon Noodles with half beef and half chicken. A tray was brought out to our table and then I dug into my food. I noticed the rice was fluffy while the meats were about the same as any place that serves it teriyaki style. I guess I shouldn't have expected more by ordering such a plain bowl. A delicious hole in the wall in Anaheim city their food is to die for! I got the chicken wrap and it was very tasty and fresh. The flavors are unique and delicious. But most importantly... the food... I hate to say it but it just lacked flavor. I had order a half and half crunch wrap type thing, and had the mayo on the side (thank goodness because it was not tasty, atleast the batch I had) I order a rice ball, which was good but just lacked flavor, and some fries which were nothing to write home about. My wife turned me into this place, I really enjoyed the teriyaki chicken and kookoo balls when we went. The owners seemed very nice, kinda like a mom pop shop. However, the last three times we have tried to visit they have been closed, and during what should be normal business hours. Wish I could give 4.5 stars as it was almost perfect! Food was very good and the value was incredible! We are visiting from Florida and this was definitely our cheapest meal of the trip but one of the better ones as far as taste. The four of us shared a teriyaki plate, cheeseburger and noodle bowl. The only thing I wished was different was the shrimp in the chicken and shrimp teriyaki plate was fried which I didn't realize till it came out. Would have been much better if it had been cooked in the teriyaki with the chicken. Good mix of spices, onions, cheese and chicken thigh meat. My son ordered tacos. He really likes them. I tried one and the ingredients were good. I didn't care for the sauce he chose to put on it. The food was good, but the service and ambience were lacking. I asked for to go containers and was given one very small container that wouldn't even hold what we had left over. We ordered some fries to share and we weren't given any separate plates to put the food on. I asked for plates or a separate container so we could share the fries and I was given a very tiny plate that didn't even hold hardly anything. This place was one of many restaurants that I have been wanting to try and finally had a chance one Saturday afternoon. As soon as I enter the building, it was very hot with the heat from the kitchen and small space. Of course, the weather didn't help as well. There was neither fan nor air condition on, which was a little bit unbearable while eating. The cashier/server was nice and prompt on taking the order and bringing the food to the table. She disappeared to the back of the restaurant where there is a cubicle at the back of the place and showed up whenever the customers come in, which was interesting. We ordered Kookoo rice balls, chicken wrap and chicken udon noodle and Kookoo rice balls were definitely the star of this restaurant, which I would recommend anybody who visits. Chicken warp was crispy outside and moist in the inside and the flavor was great. Chicken udon noodle was our least favorite, unfortunately. Title: Decent Chicken Teriyaki Joint with Room for Improvement I would rate it really a 3.5 out of 5 I wanted some chicken teriyaki today, and overall, it was a satisfying experience. The chicken teriyaki itself was delicious, cooked to perfection with just the right balance of sweet and savory flavors. It was grilled with some burnt ends which I love. However, I was slightly disappointed with the shrimp; it was fried rather than grilled but that didn't take away from the score. I just prefer grilled shrimp. Additionally, the beef teriyaki was a bit tough due to overcooking it a bit too long. It was edible still. The ambiance of the restaurant was pleasant, its lot fancy it's a basic as it comes restaurant. The service was attentive. While there's definitely room for improvement. Portions for the chicken are pretty good. Slightly less in the shrimp and beef bowl even though it cost $12.75 and the chicken bowl was $10. I don't do this often, but I did wanna mention a very big problem in this restaurant is the customer service. Food looks and smells amazing (I didn't actually eat the food since I was doing an order through Uber Eats) and the concept is amazing tho!! The problem was the respect with dashers/uber eats driver, in the moment I was picking up an order and I was waiting for the order since the person assisting me seemed like she needed a couple moments for the order (didn't communicate that btw). While I was waiting I accidentally couldn't hear her since her voice was pretty low and soft and she started CLAPPING also yelling "HELLOOOOOO". I get being frustrated at someone for not listening, but there's no reason or purpose to be disrespectful. Previously when I came in I was being polite towards her as well, so I never had any type of animosity prior to the encounter. Besides that food looks amazing lol read more

I've only ever had 1 thing from this restaurant but I'm so in love with it. The chicken wrap is always 10/10. It's a little spicy, but not overpowering. It's a good size portion too. I usually have half for lunch and the rest for dinner. Highly recommend trying the wrap! read more

Craving for something a little different and my son and I found this place in Fullerton. We tried out the chicken wrap and the kookoo balls. The wrap was stuffed and was very filling. It also had a pretty decent kick to it. The kookoo balls were crunchy in the outside and nice and chewy in the inside. A little messy to eat but I'm not complaining. My wife was in the mood for Japanese food and Kookoo was highly rated in this area. They are a fusion restaurant but they basically take their Japaneese-inspired meats and add them to tacos and burritos similarly to Korean tacos, etc... We got the chicken and beef rice combos to try each of their meats. The chicken and beef were tender and tasted good but lacked some of the grilled taste we were expecting with teriyaki. The large salad it came with was also much appreciated to balance out the meat. We did not like how the rice came "pre-seasoned" with teriyaki sauce already mixed in, it made it too heavy for us and the teriyaki and hot sauce on the side already let people add as much or as little sauce as needed so it was unnecessary. Reason for the overall rating is the "Kookoo ball". It is a deep fried rice ball with chicken, spicy sauce, cheese, onion, and cilantro. It sounded good so we ordered three. Unfortunately one of them had spoiled meat in it I could smell right away when I cut it in half. It was so bad I threw it away and since it was the first thing I smelled it subconsciously made the other food seem like it was spoiled. Dare I say this is better than WaBa. The sauce is light, chicken is cooked well and the veggies were cooked perfect - not soggy. The extra sauces were all tasty. Also picked something called a Kookoo Ball. I'm not sure what's in it but I'd definitely eat it again. The fried rice on the outside has a great texture. The filling is flavorful and didn't need soy or any other sauce to be delicious. The staff was super helpful and the dine in portion of the restaurant was super clean.
