Wow! The sushi here is deliciously fresh. So I've had some amazing $200+ sushi before. Nothing has competed to it yet, but for the price Kondo offers their sushi and sashimi they come very close! After each bite I kept saying 'wow'. You can tell they are truly trained with sushi by the cut of each sushi and the construction and flavors of the sashimi. They also have real authentic wasabi--not horseradish. I ordered the $40 sushi, sashimi, and spicy tuna roll. Again, wow. so fresh. So good! Each cut was amazing. Not sure if I understand the raving reviews for Kondo...it's not bad, but I don't find it particularly outstanding so the price isn't justified. The interior (and exterior - I went in the after times and dined outside) is clean and service is good. We had a reservation and was told that each table only had a certain amount of time, which was understandable and somewhat raised my expectation knowing that this place was fully booked. I had the salmon ikura don, which turned out to be a tiny bowl with 4 sad slices of salmon. It'd be one thing if it was cheaper, but $20+ for something so small and basic was disappointing. Got takeout last night -- I wanted to sample a variety of items from their menu, so we got sushi, the una don, a couple rolls, tempura assortment, and shrimp dumplings. Everything was top quality, beautifully presented (even as takeout!), and delicious. Great care was obviously taken with our order, which I really appreciate. Standouts were the una don and shrimp and avocado roll for me -- but every item we ordered hit the mark. Today I'm wondering how many days I should leave between now ordering my next takeout from Kondo so I don't come off too obsessive! This was definitely a pleasant surprise. Kondo was described to me as being one of the best and more superior sushi joints in Astoria with the freshest and tastiest fish executed at a high level. I rarely ever let anyone take me out to dinner. But once in a blue moon I let my guard down. After imbibing in way too many 'sips' of wine at an event and deciding to find food with the idea of just going to Broadway and running into something, we went to Kondo. I wasn't tricked. Even the miso soup tasted better than other Japanese joints with agedashi tofu and a rich silky broth. Pan fried pork dumplings, which I exclaimed were just dumplings followed. But the main star of the show was the fish. I've never tried uni before or most of the other items that were assembled on the beautiful and colorful sushi sashimi combination platter. But if I could eat uni every day for the rest of my life, I'd probably be the happiest, fattest kid ever. I came here with my boyfriend after a failed attempt to see Socrates Sculpture Park on a day when they were closed for installing their upcoming exhibition. Moods were low and after all the walking, we wanted to treat ourselves. We saw the menu on their window literally as we were passing by the establishment. As we both are extreme Japanese cuisine lovers, the decision was unanimous for a table for 2. Luckily, a reservation failed to show up, so we were seated immediately in the already packed restaurant. Service was kind and personable. After perusing the menu, we decided to go with 2 appetizers and one main dish to share. Here's what we ordered: -Grilled scallop and mushroom with masago mayo ($12): one of the chef's daily specials, this dish was creamy and delicious. Scallops were chopped into small pieces and together with the mushrooms, mixed with the masago mayo. The small portion wasn't enough satisfy us and soon we had to fight for the last spoonful. -Braised pork belly - buta kakuni ($9): Best dish we had. These two extremely thick cuts of braised pork belly served in its own broth melted in our mouths. I'm not too into eating meat fat and was content with the ratio of meat versus fat in the pieces. The fat was sparse and hidden between chunks of meat, which only enhanced the flavor. The broth was so amazing that we drank it with our spoons upon finishing the meat. -Chirashi ($20): not the best chirashi I had partially due to how thinly the sushi pieces were cut. I was honestly impressed with the chef who did such a fine job slicing the pieces. However, for 20 bucks, I wasn't expecting much more than this either. The rice underneath the sushi was sticky and sweet, just the way I like it. We decided to finish our meal strong so we ordered green tea parfait with wafer, red bean, mochi, and pocky ($8). It wasn't a dessert out of this world, but had all the ingredients you could ask for in a Japanese dessert and was a light finish to a wonderfully tasty meal. Small cozy restaurant with simple decor. I was pretty disappointed by my experience. Considering the price, portions were unexpectedly small and more importantly, taste-wise the food could've been better. We ordered the sushi regular and salmon ikura don. The sushi had very little fish and was heavy on the rice. On the plus side, the service was very quick and our waters were constantly refilled. I'm from out of town and was told that Japanese cuisine is quite competitive in NYC so I had really high expectations upon coming here to dine. First off, let's just say everything from the ambiance to the food was absolutely amazing. The staff were really attentive and courteous and made the entire experience Grade A. From the "Today's Specials" menu, we ordered: Seared Beef w/ Garlic Sauce Grilled Scallop & Mushroom w/ Masago Mayo Raw Jumbo Oysters From the sushi menu: Sushi Sashimi Combo Dessert: Almond Tofu Everything from the specials menu were really good. The jumbo oysters were super fresh and the grilled scallops were surprisingly creamy and satisfying. I must say, however, the beef were a tad overdone in my opinion for my own personal taste but they hit the nail on the head with the flavor. Not too heavy with the garlic sauce and the onions added great texture to the thinly sliced beef. The sushi sashimi combo included a 6pc spicy tuna roll (I can honestly do without this one, but it's like a bonus), 6 pieces of nigiri, and 10 pieces of sashimi (2pc of each fish). This combo platter worked perfectly well alongside our selection of appetizers, feeding two girls that overloaded on hot sake. All of the fish were extremely fresh and deliciously sweet, I could've easily done a sashimi deluxe platter all by myself, of course, without all of the other dishes though. I had the almond tofu for dessert and it was served with a steaming hot cup of genmaicha. The almond tofu was really silky and light in texture (more like a panna cotta x pudding, but REALLY light) and had the perfect amount of almond flavor and aroma. Kondo is near and dear to my heart and home (thankfully). They are always so polite which makes the experience wonderful but even more so the food is delicious. I find myself going there at least once every two weeks. The outdoor seating is wonderful and I'm going to continue going back. We were getting tired of ramen, Italian, and diner fare near our clinic, so decided to try out this sushi bar for lunch. You wouldn't recognize it as a sushi bar from the outside though! Peering in, we saw a lot of blank, white walls, including a white wall facing the door that obscures your view inside as you walk in. That clean, sterile look led us to believe it was a salon of some sort. We were wrong! So onto the food. The lunch specials were a relative bargain. One of my friends got two spicy tuna rolls and miso soup for ten bucks. Some of us got the fried mackerel and miso soup for twelve. The good: it was a sizable fish that was *perfectly* fried. A hot, crispy outside, but a tender, juicy inside. The skin was crunchy and intact (peeve is when some of the skin gets left behind in transit). The bad: the rest of the plate, an assortment of lettuce leaves, three baby carrots, three pieces of broccoli, a half slice of potato... It was just a sad looking plate (pictured). My colleagues raved about the sushi, so that's definitely a must try for me next time. Business was super slow during the lunch hour. We were there for an hour and saw maybe a total of five others. It was my birthday and we were looking for somewhere quiet and cute to go to and we found it! We got there pretty early at around 2pm and was seated immediately. It took a while for our servers to get to us because there were other people there, but it was okay! The atmosphere was kind of romantic and quaint, until more people started to come in, then it got very busy! When we got our menus they were really easy to understand and the servers would answer our questions on ingredients! We started off with the fried chicken appetizer (can't remember the name) but it was delicious, hot and fresh! It was boneless which I loved. I got a the spicy tuna sushi with a variety of sashimi's and all of them tasted amazing. It didn't taste slimy or smell nasty like most sashimi's which is why I shy away from them. It came with eight pieces of nigiri and a roll. He was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the fish. They brought some hot, delicious tea with our bill. It was very earthy and added a nice touch to our meal. Ambience: The decor is very simple. Big white walls. Simple decorations. The seats weren't very comfortable and the tables were really close together, but it wasn't a deal breaker for me. The restaurant was pretty quiet and tame for a Friday night. This review is a toughie. First, the quality of the sushi and food is very high and top notch in fact - the sushi was tasty and enjoyable and it literally melted in your mouth. I read some pieces get imported from Japan and would believe that to be true. It is what you would come to expect from a high-end sushi restaurant along with the price. The japanese fried chicken was delicious, not too salty, juicy and very flavorful. The fried tofu was good and the green tea parfait was excellent. A++ for quality - no qualms there. The issues that I have with this place was everything else: First, the decor isn't that great, it's a very minimalist looking place. Second, The chef special which everyone recommends is confusing. The price says $55+ and when asked the waitress how much it was today, she says it depends on what you pick. Huh? She said $80 for 2 ppl would work out fine so we said ok. When we got the dish, we got one piece of each sushi but would have rather have had one piece each for my wife and I to try out and would have paid the $55 each but did not understand and so we had to split up the sushi. Third, in most high-end omakase restaurants they make it into an experience for you, they give you each sushi one-by-one or make it into course that allow you to taste the quality in each one. Here you get it on one dish like you would any other sushi roll but you pay the high quality price for it. Maybe if we sat at the single square table it would have been a better experience with the chef? I don't know or maybe I'm just spoiled by other restaurants but then again those are around $80-100 pp. Fourth, the service was mediocre. The waitress didn't explain well what we were getting or had asked anyone, she didn't come around very often, we got ignored a couple times because she only looked in one direction and at the end had to chase her down for the check. So a D for experience. Get the issues fixed and this place would be a solid 5 stars. Tell me - would you rather pay the same amount at a similar restaurant for a better experience knowing you will get high quality sushi? Come here for quality but don't expect much more. Just checked out Kondo....the new Japanese/Sushi Restaurant that just replaced the former Japanese/Sushi Restaurant, Linn, in the same Astoria location. Just opened up last week! Kondo, the former Chef at Linn, is a Master Sushi Technician which tonight we were able to carefully observe. First, he slowly unwrapped the yellowtail packaging before he continued to proceed to take great pains to meticulously filet the freshly imported fish straight from Japan. He also served up some kick-ass sea bass sashimi also from Japan along with his special dipping sauce as he explained meant to be used just for the sea bass. And last but not least, tuna sushi from Spain. All top quality, the bass was by far the best! The beef teriyaki and miso soup also very good. The beef was tender and high caliber. Unfortunately, they didn't have vegetable dumplings yet....said another week to get everything organized. And they still need to get their website and menu online. Do not be fooled by the high ratings! This place was not good by any means. I came here with my boyfriend and best friend for dinner one night because it had such great reviews here on Yelp. Then my boyfriend got beef teriyaki as his entree, which he was not happy with. He said it tasted like inauthentic beef teriyaki, as if it was bought at a fast food restaurant. To make matters worse I found hair on my rolls and while they "replaced it," I'm not sure if they actually did because they took the rolls away and brought them back very quickly. I have been to Linn once or twice yet nothing compares to chef Kondo under his own roof where his creativity is allowed to flourish. From the scallop sashimi to the hamachi kama, futomaki rolll, baby yellowtail & japanese mackerel everything far surpassed my expectations. The fish is freshly shipped from Japan & their menu changes daily! Order from the specials, you will not regret it. The 2 ladies in my group went crazy over the desserts as well, certainly not typical of any Japanese restaurant I've ever been to. From the refreshing sparkling sake drinks/ sorbet 'dunked' inside them to the green tea parfait (see my photos here) everything was uniquely superb, I will return! read more

Perfection! Super ecstatic that we discovered this gem in Astoria. The quality of the food here is exceptional and the prices are decent for what you're receiving. The chef is Japanese, as well as the staff, so expect the food to be authentic and everything from hygiene to service to be top-notch! We sat at the bar with Chef Kondo directly before us, preparing our dishes. He was all smiles and extremely friendly, glancing occasionally to check on customers. When I reached the deep fried prawn head rested on the side of my sashimi platter, he advised me to break it in half first. I really needed some tips because the spikes from the head seriously would've caused me some injury. Besides the sashimi, we also ordered the octopus carpaccio, uni, fatty tuna roll, salmon avocado and eel avocado rolls (mad rolls) and everything was impeccably made. I like kondo restaurant . I tried it more times so far and the quality of the food gets high level every time! I like to sit at the bar watching kondo preparing amazing sushi dishes . They also have a great wine selection from Italy. I reccomand a Sauvignon blanc or a Prosecco which pair beautifully with raw fish! Dessert are nice too. Want to try the Japanese version of tiramisu but I was full.. Also, the restaurant has so many Japanese customers . It means that kondo is a REAL Japanese restaurant , isn't ? Enjoy !!! read more
