McCully Auto has been a blessing to the community, serving locals with honest automotive…read moremaintenance and repairs for decades. Since my last review over five years ago, Uncle James has helped me with an AC leak diagnosis, engine and transmission mount replacements, front and rear brake pads and rotors, a tune-up when my car was bogging, an alternator replacement, radiator replacement (because I cracked it trying to do the alternator myself), and now a transmission filter replacement. Pretty much every major maintenance or repair on my car has been done here, unless it was something I handled myself at home (the only exception being my CV axles that I saw Uncle Alan for at Kaimuki Auto). I'm incredibly thankful for Uncle James and the team for consistently delivering quality work at genuinely fair prices. I recently spent months doing drain-and-fills on my transmission fluid due to slippage driving uphill and hesitation between gears after cold starts. By the third drain, it became obvious the fluid wasn't improving at all. There's a common myth that transmission fluid lasts the "lifetime" of the car, but the reality is, it often doesn't. Just like ignoring oil changes, neglecting transmission fluid can eventually lead to serious (and expensive) repairs. In many cases, transmission work can cost even more than engine repairs. So here I am, trying to address the issue the best way I can. I won't lie, part of me hates that my car is now at the stage where issues pop up once or twice a year. Financially, though, buying a new car just isn't in the cards right now. Uncle James makes it possible for me to keep my car running safely and affordably while I work toward that next step, and I'm sure many others in the community feel the same way. McCully Auto remains my #1 choice for automotive maintenance and repairs. I've never had a bad experience, and I'm deeply grateful for the generosity, honesty, and wisdom Uncle James continues to share. I don't know what I would do without him, honestly.

Charles and the crew are amazing. I've been taking my truck there for safety checks five years now…read more A couple years back I talked to Charles about the repair shop. I knew that once my truck was no longer under warranty I'd want to find a good mechanic. Fast forward a couple years later and I heard some squeaking when coming to a stop. Took it into McCully Auto and they assessed and repaired my brakes in just a few hours. Charles explained everything I needed to know. Great repair. Great service. Very fair price. Thanks McCully Auto Repair and thanks Charles.

I brought my 2007 Mercedes-Benz E350 to Punahou Auto on September 7, 2026, for routine service and…read morean elective headlight-bulb upgrade. Both headlights were working when I brought the car in. I would not have approved the upgrade if I had been told it could leave me facing a major wiring or headlight repair. No such risk was disclosed to me. I offered to provide the bulbs, but the shop preferred to supply them. The first bulbs they installed were incompatible and had to be removed and replaced. After the work, the headlights stopped working. Punahou had recently passed the car for its Hawaiʻi safety inspection, and no headlight or wiring problem had been brought to my attention before the upgrade. When I raised the problem, the owner's response was essentially that the car was old and "these things happen." That did not address the fact that the headlights had worked before the elective work, or why I had not been warned of this risk before approving it. I did not receive a written estimate for the Mercedes work before it began, and I did not sign a written waiver. I paid a $1,000 deposit on the morning of September 8, before pickup. The paperwork was first provided at pickup. It listed an H7 LED bulb even though this car uses halogen bulbs. The original bulbs were not returned to me. I brought the car back on September 10 because the headlight problem continued. Black electrical tape was discussed, but I was not given a receipt for that visit despite asking. The paperwork I received also did not fully document the first incompatible bulbs or the return visit. I have tried to resolve this directly with the owner by email. He is no longer responding and has stood by the shop's position that it will not help unless I pay thousands more. I obtained an independent diagnosis and repair estimate because the headlight problem remains unresolved. My requests to resolve this fairly have gone unanswered. We had trusted Punahou for years. They sold us this Mercedes and had maintained it, and we had never disputed their charges before. That history is why this experience has been so disappointing. I would have declined the elective upgrade if the risk had been explained. I'm left with an unresolved headlight problem, a substantial repair bill, and unanswered requests to work this out fairly.

Most recently, I brought my car in for an oil and filter change along with a safety check. As always, they went above and beyond--clearly communicating current maintenance needs and giving me a realistic picture of what to expect on my next visit. They also noticed something with my brakes, took the time to adjust them, and checked the wear. Everything turned out fine, but I appreciated the extra attention. They also gave me a heads-up that my tire tread is getting low and I'll need to replace them soon. While they carry a variety of tire brands, they don't stock the specific brand I prefer--but they made it easy by offering to mount, balance, align, and dispose of the old tires if I have them shipped in. Very reasonable and convenient. Honest, efficient, and thorough work at a fair price. It's hard to find a shop you can trust for this long--Masaki's Auto Repair is one of them.
