If you've always been how I used to be at Thai restaurants, ordering the safe dishes like green curry, Panang curry and the rest of the curries, Pad Thai, drunken noodles, chicken satay, then maybe you'd wanna try some other Thai stuff here, because this place is really authentic and the chef cooks good food. The minced pork salad is to be eaten like a Chinese chicken wrap where you scoop the minced pork into the cup-shaped lettuce leaf and shove it into your mouth. The one hot dish I absolutely devoured was the stir-fried morning glory Thai style! It tastes like what a lot of HK locals would refer to 夠穫氣 which literally means "enough wok essence" Yeah it sounds so dumb... What it means is there is enough fire, heat and power to make a good stir-fry! The curries there were just okay, but definitely decent enough to fulfill your curry cravings. To wrap the meal up, how can we forget the mango sticky rice! I made my own mango sticky rice before, so I know what's good and not, and this place got it right! The rice was chewy and soft, and the coconut sauce had the right consistency and flavor. The mango would not be in season in the winter so it might taste a bit sour, but it wouldn't be their fault, so if you want a perfect mango sticky rice, order during the summer. To call it a dive would be putting it lightly, with a setup that is perfect for people on the go but just enough seating to accommodate several parties of 1 or 2 at the most. The feel is distinctly SE Asian, almost reminiscent of the street side Thai eateries in Bangkok, with just as much grit and clustered big city feel. Despite the little attention it receives, the interior would suggest this place has been around for a long time. Articles from the 80s are taped to the wall, faded decor pieces from Thailand have lost their color due to age and sun damage, and the staff / crew is a mix of old Thai ladies who speak just enough Canto to keep locals in check. They're a nice bunch, but the food is the real draw. Their version of a pad thai reminds me of something I'd find back in the states, albeit drastically greasier and messier. Shallots and peanuts are dusted across some overcooked bits of egg and a mesh of noodles. It is tasty but requires a lot of lime to really bring out any flavor. Their tom yum soup seems to be made occasionally (i.e. on a menu but not available each day), but was full of flavor despite having such a murky color. The real standout is their namesake, the moo yang, i.e. grilled pork neck. Their stay skewers on display may look like they've been sitting there all night, but it was likely made fresh earlier that day. A little peanut sauce and sweet hoisin make for great dipping, but I like devouring it sans any condiments. They have an entire glass case, viewable from the street and sell them for anywhere from $15-28 a piece. I'm also really impressed with their moo ping (roast pork) standalone dish. Tender chunks of pork with a crispy exterior, somewhat similar to Filipino lechon but without the liver sauce. The danger with a lot of their crispy pork products is there is a lot more fat than meat half the time, which also bodes true for their banana leaf wrapped stuffed sticky rice. Thai style tamales were more disappointing than they were tasty. If dining in, shoot for a grilled fish but for folks on the go -- pork skewers are the way to go. Ra Cha Moo Yang is cash only. Don't come here in a group and don't expect much in the realm of Northern Thai cuisine. Their version is slightly catered to the local palate, but there is a lot to be appreciated with the items they do well with (mainly pork related).

A friend of mine first introduced it to me. She'd been having her take aways there for dinner and suggested we try one day. Since then I have been a regular to this place. In fact it is conveniently located for me, at a corner just at the end of Amoy Street as you come from Hennessy Road. It doesn't look very exciting from outside and even a little run down, but that's part of its charm. The place is run by four lovely Thai ladies whose kitchen is open to the (rather small) dinning space. The dishes come quite quickly but don't expect them to rush to take your order. The atmosphere is laid back. There are around 6 tables that accommodate for twenty people maximum. Now, the thing I go there for is the food...or should I say the curries and the Tom Yum Soup. If you go for curries, I would suggest you try their pork red or chicken green from the dinner menu. They come in big bowls with plenty of meat and vegetables but no rice (I don't eat rice). I assure you it makes for a big meal and it's just delicious. The curries are mild but you can ask them to make them spicier if you like. I would also recommend you go there at the end of the day because I have noticed their sauces taste better then (they might cook them in the morning and let the sauces soak in the flavor of the spices...). Their prices are very reasonable (around 50-60 per curry dish) and they don't have service charge. It's never very crowded, as opposed to the rest of the places on that same street. Their opening times vary, but they close early in the evening. My little Thai is definitely not a place for a fancy dinner or where I would take a date on the first day but more of a local dinning place with tons of charm and it's great value for money. I have only had a better Thai curry and that was recently, at Thai Basil in Pacific Place. I feel like I should write a review about this place too.

When it comes to food, you're rest assured you can get authentic Thai food here. We pre-ordered 2 plates of raw shrimp in advance and they were very fresh! We also ordered some beef and chicken satay skewers, shrimp cakes and fish cakes as appetizers. Oh my lord... the fish cakes were the best I've ever tried! Chewy yet not fishy! For the main course, we had pork knuckles, grilled fish with lemon sauce (served on the grill), curry with deep fried chicken and the stir-fried clams in chili paste. We've never made a reservation and even though it's a popular place in Wan Chai, we've always found a table. It's usually packed with big groups of both locals and expats and reservation is recommended if you are planning to go with a group. The space is just 'basic': large room with tables placed all around (ask for a table at the window so you can get a view on the street at least!) and a bar facing the dining space. To me, it feels too nude, too much 'eat and leave'. The service is not especially friendly, they would come, take your order, and come back to serve you without much of an interaction. But they're efficient and even at the times the restaurant was full, we've never had to wait for too long. I've ordered a few things on their menu, the star being their curries. I think between the two of us, we've tried them all and we can't decide which one is best; this is something they do really well. Portions are small though, and unless you order rice on the side, you may not leave with a full belly. Another recommendation, if you like fish, is their steamed fish, that comes with a stove tray and finishes cooking at your table. Their prices are fair, with starters ranging from 50-60 HKD and mains around 70-150, on average. It's a bit spicy even when you ask for a mild one, but it's still very flavourful and coconutty. If you're worried that the chicken would dry out in the curry, that isn't going to be a problem here. I've had a green chicken curry and a chicken coconut soup, and in both instances the chicken was still tender and succulent. Salads are also really good here- I'd like to highlight the mango salad in particular, where they make a salad with shredded pieces of unripe mango. While it may sound very unpalatable, they complement it very nicely with a sweet dressing and the nite that served as a topping. Barbecued pork neck is good, and so are their sides like a soft shell crab Thai spring roll- you get a really chewy outer layer, some crisp vegetables and some very crunchy pieces of soft shell crab, all of which is made so much better when you add their fish sauce. The pad Thai and skewers were good, but nothing too special. They got the textures and flavours right and that's about it. Desserts and drinks are pretty good. I tried the young coconut, which was nice, as well as their other coconut based beverages that feature scented jellies inside. The pandas water chestnut pudding and multilayer coconut pudding are good, though if you don't have much of a sweet tooth, there's a chance you won't like the multilayer pudding too much.
