There are other varieties such as laksa, beef rendang, nasi goreng and char kuay teow. No wonder it is so packed at lunch time, we waited almost a good hour for a table. The hainan chicken comes with three sauces. The chicken is good but not tender enough - I think it's more to do with the breed of chicken then the cooking. The bak kut teh (rib soup) comes piping hot on a stove, and has a rich herbal flavor and lots of ingredients in it. I love the laksa noodle has a strong flavor, and the satay are tender and juicy. The lunch set comes with a barley drink, which is so delicious, I managed to drink half of it, to the brim of bursting my belly. Overall, good quality food for at a fair price, fast service.

I didn't know that until I visited Singapore last month as I tried Katong Corner in July. We ordered the Hainan Chicken Rice, Char Kway Teow, and Beef rendang. The chicken was delicious! But my qualm is the rice that accompanied the dish. You can taste the chicken in the first bite of rice, but for some unknown reason, it had a very strange plastic-y kind of after taste that did not sit well on my taste buds. I tried to mask it with the soy sauce, chili sauce and ginger condiment and it only mediated that odd after taste ever so slightly. The Singaporean-style Char Kway Teow came with a large prawn in the center. It looked very impressive, but how did it taste? It was a solid plate of noodles, with a variety of thick and flat noodles, but the prawn was overcooked. After tasting this dish, I realized that I preferred the Penang-style CKT with a little spice kick and fried egg. To each his own. On the other hand, the Beef Rendang was very tender. If I return, I'd definitely order this again. We were served four large beef patties and the rendang sauce was 5 stars! Probably best in HK that I've tasted. I can't wait to try their other dishes, especially their Laksa and Singapore chili crab.

Our party of 2 ordered the set menu for 2. It came with a fruit salad, a soup or choice, prawn with rice rolls, satay, hainanese chicken, veggies and chicken rice. Definitely lots of food to share but reasonable price ($HK 599) compared to ordering them ala carte. Everything was tasty and ambience was intimate for a good dining experience. Service level can be improved as nobody came to check on us after the food was served and the server was kind of rude when I asked for a takeout box for the leftovers (by the way, it was $3 surcharge). Overall, i would recommend the restaurant for hainanese chicken.

However, the variety of food here is great and flavors are actually quite nice. The hainan chicken portions are very tiny though, so don't come if you have a hungry hippo American appetite (lol), or order two dishes. Also keep in mind that any meat from the soups you order will be completely dry and crumbly from simmering in the broth for so long--meaning you're ordering strictly for the soup, not the stuff in there. I will say that the beef brisket noodles are really good and that is probably worth the most bang for your buck if you come here. Lastly, this place is quite pricey--on par with US prices and more expensive than US hainan chicken places. You're basically paying to say you went to a "Michelin" restaurant.

Plus 2 appetizers for the table to share. Total was just $100HKD each!! There is a photo for everything on the menu (except appetizers and drinks) so you can pick by photo! Which was what I (illiterate Chinese) did. I chose curry noodles: taste like laksa ramen, super flavourful and mildly spicy. It's not spicy if you enjoy spicy. There is a lot of food inside this bowl of soup, it's not just plain curry and noodles. Highly recommended. I had a taste of my friends' dish and they were all really really good. The two appetizers we shared were extremely delicious. Both are curry and pancake bread. The bread is very soft and already good, to dip in FREAKING DELICIOUS curry. Omg The yellow one is mango curry. It's sweet mango like dessert but with curry flavour. As strange as it sounds, it was soooooo good together. The red one is plain spicy and thin curry (not creamy like the yellow one), honestly you can make this a meal by ordering rice on the side. It's so good!! I want to drink it! Service is nice!!! The restaurant is extremely small and we had to wait a little bit at 8pm to be seated. If you come as 1-2 people, you'll be seated right away. However for big groups, tough luck! But definitely risk your luck because it's SO GOOD.

The restaurant is a pretty small spot and is best to come with a smaller group of people. Service is quick and efficient which makes it perfect for a quick lunch. Food: 4.25 stars Value: 4.5 stars Service: 4.25 stars Environment: 3 stars Overall: 4.25 stars Recommendations: Malaysian bak ku teh, teh terik, laksa, nasi lemak They serve hands down the best bak ku teh I've had in HK. The broth is ridiculously fragrant and if you like garlic you will love this soup. The meat is tender and is really a great dish. The laksa here is solid with a delicious creamy broth. Wish there were some fish cakes which would have really added to the dish. Nasi Lemak is also great...fried chicken was nice and crispy. Don't forget to order the drinks. Both the Hk style and Singaporean drink options were great. Lemon ice tea just as good as a local shop and the teh terik was awesome. The only dish I didn't like that much was the chicken rice. The poached chicken is served with a gravy which is odd and if it added to the dish I wouldn't mind but I didn't like it much. Also, the rice was too wet and clumped together.

Service is subpar; I waited sitting patiently for a while without being served. Overall, I guess you could say that service is up to HK standards, where the waiters don't really treat you with any smiles. I ordered a prawn mee with less spice, prawn and squid wings, while my sister ordered one with normal spiciness, prawn and shredded chicken. The flavours were so rich and fishy! You could really taste the shrimp flavour, and the entire red coating on top of the broth is from the shrimp head (the shrimp is boiled for hours to make the broth). Very delicious! My pho noodles were overcooked and therefore very short - they would break apart at the touch of my chopsticks. My sister got the mixed noodles (thick yellow noodles with rice noodles) and found it interesting. A very filling and satisfying meal! We were lucky to not have to wait in line, but the shop filled up quickly and there was a line once we left the building.

It makes sense after all, Nam Ah has practically outlived most of the businesses on Ashley through 50+ years and might have the roomiest interior, along with the nicest decor of the bunch. But after a couple of recent visits, it occurred to me the flavors were decent at best, not enough to warrant an immediate return. That's not to say things at Nam Ah were bad per se, but it hasn't won over my group of dining companions and I for the times we've gone. The menu is understandably catered to the Hong Kong and western palate, which includes random dishes from Portuguese Chicken to Borscht. The staff was sadly not in tune with a lot of Southeast Asian choices (such as roti canai, mee goreng, etc.) because they actually don't exist on the menu. Thankfully, through a myriad of random choices, we were able to convince them to create something similar to it. The end result showed it wasn't their strong suit, so it's hard to fault them for that. So instead, we focused on things they were known for. Hainanese Chicken ($85 for a quarter, $138 for a half), Pork Satay ($70), Char Kwayteow Noodles ($75) and a bowl of their Seafood Laksa. The reactions all around were shoulder shrugs, but being that we were hungry enough we still ate most of everything for the benefit of the doubt. I've had better Hainan Chicken at smaller, less distinguished places, but at least the presentation was on point. I would like to think Nam Ah has had better days or perhaps the times have changed in a way where this cuisine has become more accessible than ever. While I'm not opposed to a return visit, I'm really hoping they'll revamp their selections to where not only all of SE Asia is represented in some way, but tastes like it too.

Wah wah wah! Another hidden gem!…read more The food here is so good and there's quite a few unique dishes!! Seafood is very fresh and tasty. The deep fried tofu is bomb! Super silky and smooth, without a chewy skin. The salted egg yolk shrimps are coated evenly and the shells are edible! The mantis prawns are very juicy and fresh. I also loved the clams soup and the pork chops! Must haves: salted egg yolk shrimps, deep fried tofu, and mantis prawns. Prices are also very fair. Probably even cheaper than many other places that aren't as good! I saw a few michelin signs on the walls, but I'm not sure if it's referring to them or the alcohol they're promoting. But I do think their food is good enough to be Michelin!! It is quite a busy place so be sure to book a reservation!

Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. For a restaurant that is still crowded towards midnight, you know they must have done something right.
