You know how the chinese use to combine foods and medicine; it is believed that the ingredients in the soup have therapeutic properties and could actually restore the balance of the Ying and Yang. Frankly, i don't really care too much about the internal balance thing, as long as the soup tastes good, it works for me. Indeed, the soups served by this joint is freshly made and have been simmering for long hours; you can actually feel the collagen sticking your lips together after taking a sip off the cup. That's the very definition of a good bowl of soup. The soup cost around $50-60HKD, so around $9-10CDN. For just a bowl it sounds a little pricey, but it is loaded!. You obviously have the snake meat - usually there should be 2 types of snakes as the main ingredient. Then it's topped with with chrysanthemum leaves, spices, lemon leaves and fried dough on the side. The soup itself is very thick as it's stewed for hours. The snake meat tastes similarly to chicken, but a little tougher to chew on. It gives a very hearty feeling to it and a warm feeling inside and out. Because there's so much content inside, one bowl fills you up pretty well (so worth the money!). This brick and mortar business has had a mention on CNN and TripAdvisor. Workers are used to the curious tourists and generally friendly. It is smack in the middle of Sham Shui Po. If you don't pay attention, you'll easily walk past it since it's somewhat hidden behind the sidewalk vendors on Apliu Street. The shop is old and looks it. The space is tight and cluttered, yet SWH still manages to set up 3 to 4 tables to serve customers with. It's not uncommon to have to share tables with other customers here. The kitchen is tucked away in the back. As you walk in, you will see cages with snakes inside. There are two wooden cabinets that I could see and both are like ancient artifacts with tons of drawers. Each slot has two Chinese words "毒蛇" in red labelled on it. You guessed it! Venomous snakes! Our table was only inches away from these live venomous snakes in these drawers with really flimsy looking locks. Let's just say we kept one eye on our food and one eye on those drawers. SWH's menu is obviously serpentine-centric: soup, tempura, stir fry, wine. But wait! They even serve baby mice wine! I have no idea how that worked but *gag*. Really glad that I ate before seeing this special menu item. According to the locals, snake soup is supposed to have medicinal and nutritional value. Best time to consume is in winter. I was told that in order to bring out the snake flavor, add a pinch of lemongrass and white pepper in your bowl. My soup was not as brothy as I had imagined but full of savory substances. I also liked the spicy wontons as they're sitting in this delicious broth of ma-la flavoring. Be careful of this one, as the spice really warms up the belly. OTW's Chinese name translates to "Original Taste Homemade Creations". They pride themselves on having no MSG and no bouillon powder in their HK-style soups and dishes. And yes, I can vouch for their homemade-ness. OTW fills the void of living by yourself in a shoebox apartment without a kitchen. For those unfamiliar with Cantonese style soup, it's an absolutely necessary part of life (according to my parents). I grew up drinking it everyday and each type of soup ingredient will help with whatever malady I'm faced with. I can't tell you how great it felt to get OTW's Papaya, Apple, Dried Whelk, Pork broth after being soup-deprived for a few months. It doesn't sound like it'd make sense, but this is one of my favourites. They offer a variety of traditional soups like the one I mentioned, but also things like Pear, Sugar Cane, and Pork as well as Fish Maw, Conch, and Black Chicken. You can get these with the soup ingredients included, or not. If the soup is sounding a little too exotic for you, they also have lunch sets like tomato pork chop on rice, chicken wings on rice, stir fried noodles, etc. But what's life without a little adventure? Plus, the soup is where it's at, the food is just a nice add-on. Lunch sets of rice + soup are below HKD$50, giving you a hearty, nostalgic meal at great value. Dim sum and egg waffles aren't the only cornerstones of Hong Kong food culture, soup is right up there!
