This place has good value for money. Average spending per person is no more than $250. Besides all the regular Thai food like deep-fried prawn cakes and fish cakes, satay skewers, pad Thai and fried rice, the must-eats here are the Tom Yum Soup or coconut chicken soup and the oyster omelette. The oyster omelette has some of the freshest oysters in it. As for drinks, they're one of the few restaurants in HK that serves Thai iced tea. It's not the best I've tried but it definitely satisfies my occasion craving for it. Thai Simple Kitchen has an outdoor area which is great when the weather is not too hot or too cold. It could have gotten a five-star review but on my recent visit, I felt that they had a shortage of staff and it's often hard to call for a waiter especially when your table is at the back corner of the restaurant. All in all, the food is delicious and of great value. Definitely recommended especially for groups.

What's amazing is that they serve up authentic Thai food. I've been here a few times and it's has never disappointed me. Tom Khaa Kai, Pad Thai, and Hanianese Chicken are some of my favourite dishes. There's so much flavour in everything! This is their first branch so the décor has never been updated. Think simple 2nd floor shop. Ma & Pa style decorations and tiny toilets. Their Causeway Bay shop is loads better with décor but it's missing a je ne sais quoi. Some notes: There are loads of dishes that you may want to order a head of time. So check out them menu and give them a call. Also lunch, dinner and bigger parties should book ahead. It's a small dinning room. Would definitely come back!

Delicious food, good value and great vibe! These are the words I'm going to say about Sawali Club!…read more Just as we sat down at Sawali Club, the Chinese-Thai owner, Chingmy, started coming out with her microphone and sang in Thai. Apparently every table at the restaurant was celebrating birthdays. With the lead of Chingmy, all the waitresses started coming out and danced along. Although we didn't celebrate anyone's birthday at our table, we enjoyed the vibe and clapped along with the Thai birthday song. When it comes to food, you're rest assured you can get authentic Thai food here. We pre-ordered 2 plates of raw shrimp in advance and they were very fresh! We also ordered some beef and chicken satay skewers, shrimp cakes and fish cakes as appetizers. Oh my lord... the fish cakes were the best I've ever tried! Chewy yet not fishy! For the main course, we had pork knuckles, grilled fish with lemon sauce (served on the grill), curry with deep fried chicken and the stir-fried clams in chili paste. Everything was rich in flavor and simply delicious!!! For dessert, of course we cannot miss the mango sticky rice! There was not one dish that was just mediocre. I must say everything was excellent here! Sawali Club is a private kitchen, so do book in advance and they only accept cash. I recommend this place for groups as you can order many dishes to share.

When asked for a great Thai restaurant for dinner, our hotel concierge quickly recommended Mak Mak…read moreand snagged us a reservation for a Saturday dinner for two. The restaurant is hidden back in the corner of a maze like area known as Landmark near the Central MTR station. Once we reached the Landmark, we just stopped at an information desk to receive final directions. We arrived early for our reservation which originally was made for seats at the bar but at this earlier time they had a table free for us. The bar sitting is not like typical high top seating but rather a long table attached to a wall at normal table height. You and your guests will just be sitting beside one another rather than across a table and perhaps sitting next to a stranger. The staff there were super friendly and spoke very good English which helped us tremendously. After a warm welcome, we were quickly shown to our table and offered water to start. We saw all our favorite Thai dishes on the menu just like back home in the States. We started with fried spring rolls and a couple Tsingtao beers to take the edge off a long day of walking around Hong Kong. The spring rolls were on the skinny side but with seven of them on the plate and a lovely chili dipping sauce on the side they hit the spot. Served with the rolls were some fresh vegetables that we can never seem to get enough of when traveling far from home. For our next course, we went with Tom Yum soup another favorite of ours. I was a little hesitant at first to order it as it was priced at $20 USD which seemed high to me for a bowl of soup but it turns out to be a big bowl that is easily shared between two. It is served on a stand with a candle below to keep it warm and two smaller bowls with a ladle to serve it up. Our server poured our first bowls and ensured we each got one of the two huge shrimp (head and eyeballs included) along with plenty of our goodies. The soup was wonderful with a multitude of flavors. Easily the best Tom Yum we have ever experienced. It was quite spicy more so then we are used to having but still very enjoyable. For our last course, we selected Pad See Ew with pork and were pleasantly surprised to find more pork than noodles in the dish. This dish also can be shared for two if desired. Everything tasted very fresh with a wonderful sauce and at the perfect temperature. We passed on any dessert at this point but not for lack of options but rather room to put it. Overall, my wife and I enjoyed a wonderful meal here at Mak Mak with friendly and helpful service at a very reasonable price. We hope to have an opportunity to come back and try some other dishes.

The very first Thai AYCE brunch I've ever been to!…read more I appreciate that it's AYCE and not buffet style, there's a standard menu you can order dishes from. The food is not made in bulk and you can decide on the spice level of your food. Their larb is delicious, but spicy, so you'll want this option to decide on the spice level. Great selection of food from appetizers, soup, mains and the best part it includes dessert! Service is both friendly and quick. The brunch itself is affordable (esp. for AYCE) and you can opt for a smaller portion so you can try different things and not waste food. Totally worth a try if you're in the mood for Thai food and want a good variety.

Wah wah wah! Another hidden gem!…read more The food here is so good and there's quite a few unique dishes!! Seafood is very fresh and tasty. The deep fried tofu is bomb! Super silky and smooth, without a chewy skin. The salted egg yolk shrimps are coated evenly and the shells are edible! The mantis prawns are very juicy and fresh. I also loved the clams soup and the pork chops! Must haves: salted egg yolk shrimps, deep fried tofu, and mantis prawns. Prices are also very fair. Probably even cheaper than many other places that aren't as good! I saw a few michelin signs on the walls, but I'm not sure if it's referring to them or the alcohol they're promoting. But I do think their food is good enough to be Michelin!! It is quite a busy place so be sure to book a reservation!

Also known as "Hing Gung" (慶功), it literally means to celebrate and to reward the hard work the crew put into the show. Much like sik siu, since the eaters are of high exertion, the food would most naturally be as trashy as can be~ Healthy eaters might want to hit the return button now as the foods may be despicably fattening. Deep fried is almost the golden rule for every trashy food, even in Hong Kong; the famous shrimp toast is actually minced shrimp smeared on a piece of bread and deep fried to crunchy perfection; and you got it, the piece of bread is soaked with grease. To make it even more damaging, mayonnaise is served on the side for you to dip the toast in. Damaging as it seems, but it is also very gratifying and is often the dish that is cleared the soonest. Hing Gung is often an event of the nights and there aren't a lot of joint cater to this batch of customers at this time of the day. I still remember walking into this shop with the waiter asking us to wait outside the shop at 11 in the evening, while they were trying hard to rearrange the tables to sit the 15 of us down. Our server was a charismatic older gentleman who was able to give us recommendations. I felt like I was in those old-timey, classic-style Hong Kong diners. Thinking back to this restaurant is making me emotional for some reason. I have nostalgia for a place that I won't be able to go back to for a while. I always am a fiend for goose on rice because of how difficult it is to find outside of Hong Kong, especially in the U.S. I also ordered an almond drink because of my sweet tooth and need for warm beverages that are also hard to find outside of Hong Kong. It wasn't too saucy, unlike the one I tried at nearby Koh Thai further up the escalators. They kinda scrimped on the shrimp, but surprisingly I'm the type of person who likes more noodles than chicken/beef/shrimp so this didn't bother me too much. It might if you like more of the latter!
