For many in the DMV area BonChon is the go to place to get some Korean fried chicken (KFC). Oh but wait. There are a few other players on the scene and KoChix is one of them. Once again another place I had bookmarked for a long time but never got around to going to. Located on the corner of 4th Avenue and Florida Avenue it is in an area seeing a resurgence that is bordered by Howard and Shaw Universities. A very short walk to Shaw-Howard University Station. If take out is your thing this place is for you. There are no tables and just a few stools to sit on while you wait. The wait is not long and on this visit the employee (Karen) allowed me to get a sampling of all three wing flavors in an order. The choices of wing flavors are soy garlic, hot honey, and hot honey spicy. For me personally I did not find any of the flavors very hot as far as spice. No little wings here as it seems you get more flats than drumsticks. No complaint as it was all good. The best way to eat this food as with any is as soon as possible. It is great still even when you warm it back up but you lose a bit of the crispiness when you wait to have it later. My personal favorite was the soy garlic. The tangy taste of the soy mixed with the garlic was a good combination for my taste buds. KoChix has a variety of food. If you are looking for more traditional Korean fare they have bulgogi and bibimbap on the menu. In fact, if you can think of it is on the menu. Parking is available on the street for free and on a busy Saturday afternoon I was able to find a spot very quickly next to the store. read more

Guys, this place is such a hidden gem. It's run by this adorable older Asian married couple. They're so nice and the chicken is soooo yummy. It's legit Korean fried chicken... think bonchon but less standardized, less expensive, and more "hole-in-the-wall". I just got the chicken but both the drumsticks and wings were so juicy. I personally thought the soy garlic was a little too sweet. Even the spicy honey is plenty sweet and not very spicy. There is barely anywhere to sit so don't think of this place as a dinner restaurant. It's definitely a take out situation. Now, I am by no means an expert in Korean Fried Chicken (in fact, this was my first time giving it a whirl!), but this place is amazing. I have passed by KoChix many times and always told myself I would try it one day. After a particularly long day, I found myself craving something of the fried variety, and KoChix came right to mind. Despite a small physical space, this place has a ton of personality. All of the employees were very kind and helpful. I went for the 5 wings with hot honey spicy sauce, small fries, and an order of mozzarella sticks (I told you I was looking for fried food!). The chicken was delicious and the perfect amount of crunchy, and the sauce was just spicy enough to give you a good bite. The fries definitely beat the mozzarella sticks but, then again, who doesn't love fried cheese. I will absolutely be back to KoChix to try out more of their menu. Came here because I was craving Korean fried chicken after returning from Korea a couple of days ago. Of course, I didn't expect the fresh market chicken I got there... but I did expect the chicken to be crunchy at least. That is the whole MAGIC of Korean fried chicken. They can literally heat it up in the microwave and it's still crunchy. I ordered boneless chicken breasts, so I could have a nice experience... if I would have known the chicken would be soggy, I would have just ordered regular wings. This is, in no way, Korean fried chicken. Sure, one of the sauces uses honey and one of them is soy/garlic, but there is nothing Korean and the batter or the sauces. The honey spicy sauce is literally red and tastes like it has hot sauce in it. Also... The only thing Korean about the "dumplings" was the fact that there were glass noodles in the meat. The dumplings were covered in a sauce (NOT advertised by the way) and became soggy where the sauce touched; the sauce tasted like a sauce they would put on chicken. Overall, disappointed. I didn't expect the flavors to hit, but for the batter not to be crunchy, the chicken to be dry, and the dumpling to be deep FRIED (not pan-fried) with an unadvertised sauce... this is below the bar. I was in DC last week and this place was down the street from our Airbnb so we decided to give it a try. It got really good Yelp reviews so I was super excited. I may have hyped myself up way too much. It's definitely a hole in the wall type of establishment, but I didn't mind that. What I didn't care for was the lack of seats to dine in and no AC. Ever since Choongman in Columbia Heights closed down, we have been ordering more often from Kochix. For korean fried chicken, they are very good- our go to is the soy garlic and honey-spicy flavored combos. The chicken has good sauce to breading to chicken ratio, too. So why is this review 4 stars and not 5? All the KFC restaurants I have gone to (which was a lot because my mom is korean and my Dad loves chicken lol) always give you the white korean radish with the order because it cuts the spice. I don't know why they list it separately, but I forgot to order this last time and just wrote a note for extra in my chicken order and was a bit disappointed. Ended up cutting pickles at home so wasn't the end of the world, but it should just be built into the price. This little hole-in-the-wall mom/pop shop has some of the best carry out wings I've ever had. They are so crispy, but they're not overcooked at all; they have an amazing, crispy texture. They also have the perfect amount of sauce on them; they're not drenched but they're not dry either. The Spicy Honey Wings were mild (they have a hot version too). This is one of the rare times where I didn't need any dipping sauce for my wings because they already have so much flavor. FYI... if you do want ranch or blue cheese, it's an extra $0.50. In addition to chicken wings, I ordered some mozzarella sticks. Their mozzarella sticks are round and crispy like I like them. They're not flat and chewy like a lot of places nowadays (e.g. TGI Fridays). They come with marinara sauce (no extra charge). The restaurant is small, but that's to be expected with a DC carry out. I'm actually impressed that they're able to fit three stools inside. Parking is a challenge, so be patient and give yourself extra time if you drive there. Lastly, their menu says you can't order a cheesesteak sub or cheeseburger after 5pm. That seems way too early considering they don't close til 9pm at the earliest (10pm on Fridays and Saturdays). I've eaten Korean fried chicken throughout DC, MD, VA, and NYC. These are hands down the best wings I've ever had. The execution is flawless, the flavor is decadent, the portions are generous. Highly recommend the soy garlic wings - do not get the drums as they have less flavor per bite. Seriously, try it, you won't regret it. I've eaten here over 20 times (I live near by) and they're consistently delicious. The actual business: this is a hole in the wall, small business established about 5 years ago. I have had very friendly experiences with every one of the workers there - a happy bunch. You can really only order to take out but that really probably serves to their focus on making great wings and keeping prices low. I told the owner I'm moving away from the neighborhood and loved the place and she gave me a few extra wings. That's the beauty of a small business that has a lot of heart. Big Bonchon fan here but I kept hearing that KoChix is even better. KoChix was indeed good, especially loved the huge size of the wings, but the sauce at Bonchon is a little better imo (the spicy at KoChix isn't that spicy). It's a little pricier than expected ($13 for 5 pieces/fries/soda - wish they'd offer a combo deal for like $10 or something). Only real complaint is that the location is on a pretty sketchy street, especially at night. There's a lot of people loitering around the store, who are actually pretty aggressive at pursuing people when they leave the restaurant for money and food. Ok, where do I even begin to describe my love for KoChix? Do you know that chocolate guy from Spongebob? My love for KoChix is similar to his love for chocolate, and that's the closest I can get to describe my love for their fried chicken. While my fiance and I were in Indiana, we constantly talked about the perfection that is KoChix's wings and dreamt of when we could eat those crunchy and moist wings again. Now that we've officially moved to DC, we can enjoy KoChix to our heart's content. We normally order a large order with half spicy and half honey spicy plus a large size of their fries. Their wings are perfectly fried, have such a light and crunchy batter, and somehow the meat is still perfectly cooked inside. The wings aren't too heavily coated with sauce and are the perfect spicy level. We purposely order a large even though we can't finish it just so we have leftovers for the next day. Their fries are also great as they have little crunchy bits all over them. I love, love, love KoChix and the guy working the front counter has always been super nice to me. Perfectly fried like Korean wings are supposed to be and much larger than typical chicken wings Luke they should. Went with the spicy honey and honey. Not that spicy, may have got both just honey by accident. 5 wings were plenty to fill you up. Anyone complaining about the price either doesn't realize the size is double traditional or they haven't paid attention to the wing shortage on top of inflation and overall supply these days. Great price for this style Mozzarella sticks - a little on the smaller side but you get 6 where most places are less. Fried perfectly and a great cheese in the middle. BEST CHICKEN WINGS that I've had to date in DC. It's in a weird area, but the trek is worth it. Go for the amazing chicken and fries, but don't stay for the lackluster ambiance. This isn't a destination dining experience, definitely a carryout spot. There are a few counter stools to sit on if you want to eat the wings fresh on the spot, but the place is very small and mostly customers just wait for their orders to be filled on the stools. THE FOOD The wings are always served fresh to order and the hot honey spicy sauce is where it is at. You can also get half and half, but if you only go for one flavor, don't skip the hot honey spicy! I'm wavering somewhere between a 4 and a 5 stars on this place, mainly because the bulgogi wasn't nearly as good as the wings themselves, but I've got to give them some love because the service is just so great here (a far cry from several of the regions other Korean fried chicken joints). In terms of size, I went with almost all drums, and I thought they were actually bigger than BonChon's, and had a better crispy cracklin skin on them. They're also fried to order, so you don't get any soggy parts. Price wise I think it's actually slightly cheaper than BonChon, although you don't get the complimentary sides (which I honestly don't need or want anyway). The hot honey garlic flavor here is fantastic, with a good slow burn that finally catches up to you just as you're finishing your 3rd or 4th wing (or 1st if you have a low tolerance). The soy garlic is great too, but I was definitely tasting that one the entire rest of the day, ack. The bulgogi was cooked well, but was mostly a massive bowl of rice (the container is about twice the size of a typical take-out container, and it's completely full of food), and could have used a bit more seasoning. As it was it tasted a bit too sweet for me, and there's no Sriracha out on the 2 person counter for customers to spice it up some. I'm guessing 90%+ of their business is done via take-out. Suzy had so much rice left over the little lady who owns the place was worried she didn't like it. She did, but it was definitely an Asian mother portion. The star here is most definitely the chicken, but the other things will satisfy for a craving, if nothing else. My only real complaint is that they're not open late (I think 10PM on Friday / Saturday is their latest hours), which is generally when I want this stuff after a night of drinking at nearby Shaw bars. Maybe as the Rhode Island stretch between Shaw and Bloomingdale develops further it will increase the hours accordingly, but for now I think it might suffice better as a Sunday morning hangover cure. read more

BEST WINGS EVER I should stop the review here, but I get off on yelp "cools" and "funny" more that skanks do off their instagram bikini pics, so I'll carry on. These Korean wings are similar to Bon chon except they use heroine as the wings are so damn addictive. The wings are battered and extremely crispy and come in three flavors. I always ask for a custome order of EXTRA EXTRA hot and trust me they oblige. The spice is unique in the sense that its not a chili heat but more like a pepper or cayenne heat that enhances the sauce instead of overpowering it. I love KoChix's delievery service caviar. Caviar delivers all over the city and the tip is included. Don't want to pay delivery charges? No problem, I haven't had to pay a delivery charge yet. You can always google an online coupon code that will either take away the delivery charge our give you money back. But if you aren't feeling lazy I would suggest you take the drive to the restaurant and eat it fresh. There is a huge taste difference. I came here to do a quick carry-out - placing an order over the phone is quite easy. Their menu seemed to have expanded since the last time I was here (besides the Korean fried chicken, they added bulgogi bop, bibimbop, Philly cheesesteak, subs, mandoos, fried clams, etc.). I ordered a Medium order of wings, which came with 10 pieces - they were able to do 1/2 Soy Garlic and 1/2 Honey Spicy (yay!) - I like the fact that they were able to accommodate as most chicken places make you do a minimum order (usually a large) to do a combo of flavors. The Soy Garlic is definitely my favorite, as the sauce is actually really delicious and tasty - the Honey Garlic was okay, but the next time, I would just stick with Soy Garlic! Let me tell you about my experience with this place. I walked by it every afternoon on my way home from work, and I had been meaning to try it all summer. I kept putting it off because I don't like eating out on weekdays. However, today around 4 pm at work, I decided I would go. I walk in, and it's a tiny place with the menu on one wall, a small nook on the other, and the cashier in front of you. The place smells amazing, and the owner is very friendly. I ordered 5 wings of soy garlic, thinking I'd have to supplement this dinner with something else, but it turns out the wonderful Korean man put in one extra wing. Then I take a torturous walk home holding my newly acquired Korean fried chicken; torturous because I'm ravenously hungry and can't wait to put this chicken into my body. Then I get home and open the white box and the smell of friend garlic chicken immediately fills the air. And I take a wing, put it in my mouth, and everything else disappears. It's like there's only me and this piece of chicken in this entire world. It is so juicy, so warm, so flavorful. Washington DC: What is wrong with you? Maybe I am spoiled because I live on a side of the country where there is actually good Korean chicken wing action going on, but sweet Jesus your taste in chicken wings sucks. KoChix serves up what you would expect from the visual appeal of the facility (it's in the ghetto...I was asked for money twice standing outside of the joint): mediocre wings that are slathered in so much sauce that you can barely taste the chicken. And if that's what you think a Korean chicken wing tastes like, then this is the right place to go. We ordered both the soy garlic and honey spicy wings, and both tasted horrendous. The chicken wing itself was barely edible, and the dripping oozing sauce caking the wing was disgusting. This is NOT one of those off-the-grid-wow-I-can't-believe-I-found-this places. Food is 4 stars. I've had better Korean Fried Chicken, but this is really solid. Location is 2 stars. I'd normally split the difference and give it 3 stars, but the messes up people's money. Because 99% of yelpers just look at the star ratings. KFC - double fried, shell, and usually in a sweet flavor and one SUPER HOT flavor. Sometimes a mix of the two. On the geographic heat index Europe as a whole (The spice routes were for cinnamon thank you very much!) Midwest USA (whoa ease up on that coarse ground black pepper tough guy) North East USA (Who ordered the horseradish?) West Coast/Southern USA (I prefer Texas Pete's to Tabasco) Americanized Jamaican Food (Jerk, get it, you are what you eat...do you have any Ranch dressing) South West USA (We give our children serranos for Halloween) Americanized Thai Food (bro these glass noodles, feel the burn) Proper Jamaican (Are you trying to kill me?) Actual Thai Food (What did I do to you to deserve this?) Korean/Sichuan (I can't feel my face) Real Deal Indian (I see Nirvana) I'd put KoChix "hot" in the North East to West Coast range. You taste the pepper...a bit like finding a dime on the sidewalk. A little bit of pep in your step as you wonder how to spend your windfall. So by that measure Ko-Chix is cool. But the problem comes with eating it. Fried chicken, like most foods, is ideally eaten as soon as it's finished cooking. Once it drops down to the point where the oil weren't burn you, it's in it's perfect state, and you have a window of opportunity to get it at is best state. (Although arguably really good fried chicken can stay in your fridge overnight and make a great breakfast) The problem is that Korean Fried Chicken is closer to Buffalo Wings than Kentucky Fried chicken. The glaze/sauce is one of the things that makes it awesome...but the liquid penetrates the outershell of the bird and little by little degrades the overall poultry structural integrity. The very thing that you seek disappears in the sands of time. So you have to eat KFC promptly. In my estimation, this would survive a 5 minute ride in the car, but not much longer than that. The place is so small that if you decided to eat it there, you'd have to deal with 1 of 3 stools and a countertop. That's not an ideal fried chicken situation. You need to sit down, eat it, and then be able to wash your hands, (midmeal in some cases) to really enjoy the thing. And that's the problem. Good chicken that can't really be consumed properly. There's no table. And as of this writing, I don't think the facilities were set up to easily wash your hands. (the guy behind the counter did give me some wet-naps...but I needed WATER to clean up) As much as I liked it, as willing as I am to deal with the hassle of getting there, if I can't consume properly, I can't go back. Better than BonChon in terms of flavor and quality but less upscale for sure. I took the metro and walked over from Shaw, trying to time my arrival with the restaurant's opening. When I walked in around 11:10 am yesterday, there were already 3-4 people waiting for their orders, and the place just opened 10 minutes before! I got my order of 7 wings and 4 drumsticks and bulgogi in 10 minutes, which seems to be the normal wait time when you order earlier in the day. I'm not sure if that's the case later on. I agree with other reviewers who say the drumsticks appear to be larger than the competitor's. In fact, I would go so far to say that the wings even appear to be larger. Since they're prepared to order, there is nothing soft about the double fried skin. If you have time and there is space and you don't mind the smell of the oil, I'd recommend eating here so you can enjoy the chicken right away. I ate a few pieces since the two seat counter had cleared and ate some more at home. Those first few bites were so amazing, I felt an immediate addiction and had to stop myself. I ordered the soy garlic and honey spicy and think both were kind of on the sweet side but nonetheless enjoyable. More impressive is that the chicken was flavored so well and didn't burn my taste buds. It was nice that after cleaning up after myself, the male owner called me to the counter and presented me an open box of wet naps to clean my hands. He asked if I needed more than one and I told him I did not and thanked him. I thought that was a nice touch because while it's great to eat there, there's no visible restroom to wash my hands, and it was lip smacking, finger licking good. The other nice touch was checking to see whether I wanted chopsticks for my rice and bagging up my order carefully after the chicken flavors were labeled on the outside of the box. Other random things: they have a fridge with drinks and slices of cake, and on the counter with the register, there is a display case with candy. The wings here are huge! Definitely jumbo sized and my order lasted two meals when it usually lasts one at other wing places. They are fried so well and crispy on the outside and really juicy and tender. I tried the honey spicy wings (mild) and the sauce was really good! I really like the soy garlic and honey spicy. The prices are about a little over one dollar per wings, you buy them in sets of 5, 10, 15 etc. two flavored per set. Only tried the wings today--not the drums. They taste very very good. Way better than expected! read more

This was our only positive food experience while in DC. The funny part is we didn't even get to go into the restaurant. It was late and since we don't have a car, it's either cabbing it to a restaurant or walking. We were tired and did not want to get dressed after a long day of sightseeing. So we saw that these guys delivered. They use a service call caviar that delivers their food for upcharge and built in tip. I was able to order and pay online. I got a few email and text confirmations and my food was at my hotel in less than 45 minutes. We ordered the wing and drumsticks combo. With the flavors being soy garlic and spicy honey. Both flavors were amazing! The spicy honey was not at all spicy to me, but had a slight kick. They do the korean fried chicken right, with the extra crispy skin and the thick sauce that just makes every bite so amazing. I should have learned by now, stick to the wings vs the drumsticks. It's all personal preference, but I love the skin and sauce the most, so with the wings the ratio of meat to skin and sauce is about the same. With the drumsticks you get more meat. For me I like the skin more so I should not get the drumsticks. That was the same problem I had recently in Houston at our korean fried chicken joint. We also added in an order of the Bulgogi Bap and French Fries. They were just OK, but not necessary. Just stick to the wings and you'll happy! read more

Drumsticks- 5/5 for texture (tender meat with a hint of crunch) but as a previous reviewer mentioned the "soy ginger" was a syrupy glop not tasting of soy nor garlic and more like General Tso sauce. 1/5 flavor Fish and Chips- The fish served is more like a giant fish stick than the filet of fish one might expect in this British named dish. Philly Cheesesteak. A hot sub at best with soggy wilted lettuce, sliced tomato, and ketchup. Mushrooms, onions, or peppers? No. Cheese sauce? No. If you like average to bad American take out or sugary wings with great texture this is the spot for you. If you want some Korean fried chicken with a kick and a complex flavor profile, I recommend BUL in Adams Morgan. read more

It's carryout out style: fried chicken Korean s kick... No pun intended... It's so worth the trip the prices are right the combination between wing and drummet that make sense. Also the owners have a really positive attitude and the a staff. stop and get something to eat and Treat yourself to some soy garlic.
