We hired Kobolt to help us with renovating a bathroom, adding a half bath, electrical work and updating the fireplace. They helped us, not only with the renovation, but also the design. They drew up the plans and navigated the red tape of getting our plans approved by the city. Then once the work got started their communication was great. They send you weekly detailed reports which show you what work got done and what is still to come. They also provide you with an itemized list along with SKU numbers. I've done plenty of renovations to my current house and never met someone as kind, knowledgeable, and accommodating as Nelson. My house was out of the city-county they service; even still, he put together a personal and extremely detailed write-up that outlined what I can expect when tackling my second story addition project. Short summary: Hire Nelson and team if you want a contractor that you can trust and will be honest with you. I needed to renovate my mom's house that has not been touched in about 30 years. The kitchen was old and dark. She had old lighting , kitchen cabinets that were small and her baseboards were destroyed by our old dogs. Her bathrooms were not any better where in her master bath--none of us could work the shower, water didn't drain that well, she had some old electrical heater in the wall that when you accidentally turned on it would spark. The hall way bathroom wasn't any better with an old vent that leaked water, toliet that was loud, bathroom cabinet that was so low that made you feel like a giant. My mom knew she needed to fix up the house but didn't want to or thought she could get some cheap fix in the house. Also we decided to do this during a pandemic!! I finally convinced my mom that work needed to happen in her house and started interviewing contractors. I'm going to say that Nelson stood out b/c of the following--he was straight forward, he listened to what we wanted, he measured in a manner that was so detailed oriented compared to all the other contractors ( FYI he's a civil engineer!) and he knew what he was talking about and would gently steer us from some of our stupid ideas! Simple things around what type of material works best in a shower so that its not slippery! that makes a difference since all i kept seeing was my mom slipping on her shower!! Also when he provided the estimate, he also included renderings of the renovations so that we could make sure that we were aligned completely. The other complexity to this renovation was that I needed a contractor that i can trust and communicate with from Northern California. As stated, this work was happening during the pandemic and to be safe, we had moved my mom up to NCAL so she would not be compromised. This mean that communication was going to be critical to make sure that Nelson and i were on the same pages during this renovation. Renovation: I'm going to say communication, project management was absolutely ideal. i got daily updates and when there was questions nelson always reached out and vice versa. My initial feelings of am i doing the right thing disappeared as i saw the progress being made in demos and renovations. Also Nelson provided a weekly summary of what was completed and not completed. Unexpected work--replacement of pipes in the entire house!! We did have a major unexpected work in the house which was replacing all of my mom's house pipes. They were steel pipes that were disintegrating and something my mom already knew b/c her pipes kept getting blocked especially when she had family over at her house. She knew b/c she would call someone to snake the pipes every couple of months. I mean we honestly thought she wouldn't let us use the dishwasher b/c she was being the asian mom. The case was that the water wasn't draining. Nelson called me about this b/c he took the effort to get a camera to snake the pipes and showed me the results. he gave me couple of options but based on what he showed i knew that the pipes would need to be replaced. I will also say that this was a situation that almost made me fly during the pandemic but had my uncle go over to check out the situation and agreed that we needed to replace the pipes. you can see pictures of the scope of work but i will say after getting it done, there is a piece of mind about the house. the plumbing is amazing where we can now run all the showers, laundry, and dishwasher w/o worrying that something was going to get backed up!! (cuz prior it did happen!) overall work results- We love it! you can see in the pictures the 80% finished product (FYI i forgot to take pictures of the final product!) Nelson was a great partner in making recommendations from tiles, cabinet, hardware, etc. Without him it would have been impossible of having this completed while being 400 miles away and in a pandemic. He's team followed all the COVID protocols and were extremely neat and tidy. If you want a contractor that can project manage, communicate really well, and take pride in their work then hire KoBolt construction. They really can do everything and his team is amazing. Don't Hire Nelson and Kobolt Construction! I hired Kobolt to redo a guest bathroom. Day three of my project Nelson comes screaming into my home "are you going to let my guys work today"! His workers arrived before he did. I simply ask them if they could use the thicker plastic over some open walls. This bathroom was connect to a guest bedroom. Mind you I payed extra for this and it wasn't done on day one. So when the guys showed up on day three I polity ask if they would please try and protect this bedroom. Brandon his tile guy apologized and was covering the room. There was also a 6 foot strip of carpet that wasn't covered at all. Not sure why...I've done many remodels and I know it's simple/easy to lay down proper protection on the whole area. Not just part of it. I was starting to thing this isn't going so easy. Already he's blowing up at me. Day five I had enough of his arrogance. He doesn't apologize for anything instead he blames me. We parted ways! I paid him 3k. Now the real nightmare begins. The new plumbing that I paid him to do. Re-route 4"ABS drainpipe, add new toilet 3"ABS waste pipe, re-route master bathroom 2"ABS drainpipe add 2"ABS vent pipe. Pex hoses for hot and cold water. So a month or so go by. We hire a new contractor to remodel this same bathroom. This bathroom was demo down to the studs and the new plumbing is all that Kobolt did before we parted ways. New contractor pulls up the subfloor and finds a complete disaster with regard to the plumbing Kobolt did. The Pex tubing are missing all the "o" rings. The ABS with reverse level major issues which wouldn't have drained properly. All the plumbing Kobolt did was ran incorrectly and had to be demo out and re-ran correctly! I don't usually leave reviews so please understand this is extremely important to me and I hope it helps anyone with our similar situation. Our project consisted of a two-car garage being converted into a studio apartment, as well as a whole main house remodel. We started our project with another architect and company, but soon found that they were not a fit for us. We were connected/referred to Nelson of Kobolt Construction. After our first conversation I did not think they would take on our project because of the size and the impatience my wife has and her requirement to have 10 different crews working at once to get the project done as soon as possible. After meeting with Nelson, we knew we had found the right contractor and the requirements he made were only to benefit us in the long run. We could not be happier with the outcome, dedication, endurance, patience, and hard work of Nelson and his crews. So many times, we were frustrated from the city, the City Inspector (he was not only unreasonable but required things to be done that had nothing to do with the inspection he was there to preform), the codes, the existing problems behind every wall. Nelson went over and above so many times explaining, sometimes several times in different ways so that we understood the issues, the procedures, and our options. One of the main issues that we could not be happier with was the weekly reports provided by Nelson, my wife is very meticulous and loves reports and clarity. Nelson provided every week. We always knew where we were with each aspect of the construction process. We always knew what we owed and a detailed summary of each payment. Nelson also answered all of my wife's questions and non-understanding questions of the report. Thank you, Nelson, (and thank you to his wife, for putting up with us) When deadlines for material specs were needed, Nelson would follow up and stay on top of us to make the decisions needed at that time. Unfortunately, he would answer the phone anytime even while we were at a store trying to make a decision. Going over above, cannot even begin to describe the patience and care he took with our project. Again, with my wife's impatience we did end up using some other contractors, without it being his responsibility Nelson helped them, provided guidance, made us aware of concerns before their work was completed, even stood inspections for items that were not his responsibility. Many times, Nelson had multiple Kobolt crews onsite exceeding deadlines. They had to work around a lot of existing household items. When they did, they were always courteous and cautious. We understand we were not the easiest or consistent customers, but Nelson and his crews always made us feel at ease and that our project was their #1 priority. If you are reading this I am going to just start off by saying. Ask Nelson and his wife, (its a family business), to give you an estimate and then hire them. It will be the best experience you will ever have with a contractor. Trust me, I am a son of a contractor and Kobolt Construction is way better then ANY contractor that I have worked with, yes including my Father. Here is why I hired Kobolt Construction and will again. Recently my wife and I had our first kid so we needed more outside space and storage and I had no time to build it. So Nelson came and gave me a fair bid to remove an old concrete slab and poor a new one plus build a shed and a large Gazebo to fit the style of my Craftsman house. Not only does Nelson have an engineering background, his crew was super smart and skilled as well. But the best part was Nelsons attention to detail and communication. Listen - if you're like us, you're looking to find a great and reliable contractor for your project. Lucky for you (and us) - there's Nelson and his team at Kobolt Construction. We sought out estimates from four contractors for the addition and kitchen/bathroom renovation to an older home we had recently purchased. Three of the four contractors handed us one to two pages with vague descriptions and an estimate. Nelson called us and asked detailed questions. He provided a thorough 15 page estimate that read like a book - from foundations to finishings. Nelson takes so much time to fully understand a project and his estimate was spot on. We were recommended to Nelson and his team and feel so lucky to have found him. There were no surprises in costs and the only additions to that original estimate were from unexpected issues (what we thought was a wall but was just a pocket door or an uneven flooring in living room due to the age of the home) or from additions we wanted added to the project (recessed lighting in all rooms and new HVAC system). Nelson is detailed and dedicated in his work. He will always be honest and direct, and provide advice when needed but respect your decisions. I purchased a 1921 Craftsman style fixer upper in Downtown Fullerton 7 or 8 years ago. Several years back, I watched a very similar house down the street have the exterior remodeled. I spoke to the homeowner regarding the contractor which was Nelson Moreno from Kobolt construction. The homeowner was extremely satisfied with their experience and the end result of the work performed. Earlier this year I decided it was time to give my place a facelift and find out what was underneath this 100+ year old siding and roof so I reached out to Nelson. Nelson and I laid out a plan knowing that there could and most likely would be surprises as we removed the entire exterior, roof included. Sure enough, we encountered quite a few issues including damaged framing and flooring from termites and water damage to improper electrical wiring etc. Nelson is very good at explaining in Laymans terms the issues, the options, best practices etc. which made this endeavor much less painful. I needed advice as well as opinions on the basic things too like shower tile and bathroom flooring and fixtures to paint colors, lighting, etc. Nelson has a great eye and isn't afraid to give his honest opinion if asked. Nelson is our trusted contractor who took care of our home renovation. We wanted to make our new house which we had just purchased into a more modern house with an open concept kitchen/living room. We are busy working parents with no previous experience of going through the home renovation process. We had heard many unsatisfying stories from our friends and families in dealing with contractors. I first met Nelson (the owner) from Kobalt during my research for a contractor through home advisor. I met with a few contractors before I met Nelson and also after my meeting with him. I immediately had a good feeling about him and noticed how much pride and responsibility he takes of his work. He always answers your calls and he is very clear and honest from start to finish. I could just give him 5 stars for his work, however that wouldn't be fair. He deserves a lot more than that. I had to place a new fence between my house and the neighbors and I learned pretty quickly that it is harder than you think to hire a company which is not specialized in fence installation to do the job. Nelson helped through the entire process by contacting manufactures and also to make sure he would install it properly and in a timely manner. I had a lot of issues having the material delivered (about 2 1/2 months to be specific). Nelson understood and waited for the material to be available patiently. I design spaces and have an engineering degree myself. I am very specific and I know exactly what I want. I don't expect anything less than perfection when it comes to any project and I will not write a good review unless it is fair and accurate. Also don't write good reviews because someone asked me to. With that said, I will always take my time to recognize an AMAZING job with a PERFECT outcome. My fence has 86' in length and it is a straight line. After Kobalt finished the work the first think I noticed is how every single panel is lined up perfectly. It is hard to go to the backyard and not just keep looking at it. It looks beautiful and high end. It is now the focal point of the yard and all my neighbors love it! Kobalt workers are friendly, kind, respectful and accountable. They worked over a holiday weekend with a smile in their faces. One of them passed on a family vacation to attend to my project. Not once he complained. He just wanted to make sure we were happy. I found Kobolt Construction via Home Advisor after having a horrible experience with the first contractor I hired and fired. My first contact was with Bree, Nelson's wife. I told her I required responsiveness throughout this project and if I wouldn't receive that, tell me now so I can move on. Bree assured me Nelson was very responsive. While I was wary given my past experience, I scheduled a consult with Nelson. From the moment I met Nelson, he was professional and honest. I checked with the references and all of them had nothing but great things to say about Nelson, his crew, his professionalism, the quality of his work as well as the fact work was completed on time and on budget. I was sold! We entered into a contract and Nelson has been professional, honest, thorough, incredibly responsive and communicative, while also offering suggestions to improve the project, not upselling, rather makes suggestions that may work better for our family. Nelson pays incredible attention to detail. Additionally, he has gone way above and beyond in helping us move this project forward with the City. The approval process was somewhat difficult. He was extremely helpful in helping us navigate through that process! To date, our project is not yet complete; however, once the project was approved by the City, Nelson and his wonderful crew were up and running and our project is moving along beautifully. A bonus: each day when they leave, the job site is very clean and neat. Also, as the project progresses, Nelson sends photos to provide updates of the completed work. I have complete confidence we will be 100% pleased with the end result. I'm so incredibly happy with my choice in Kobolt that I had to write a review now! Kobolt Construction is truly the best construction firm you can hire. It is a family business, and they treat their clients like family. (I would like to believe that I am their favorite client ever, but I know they treat everyone special). I originally hired them to do two bathroom remodels and a kitchen remodel. As I saw their work, I kept adding more projects because I knew they were the best company for the job. Nelson would sit with me every evening to go over the days activities as well as the plans for the next day. Nelson even helped me with other projects out of his scope, such as moving furniture and cleaning my garage. Every employee that worked on my project was nice and I felt extremely comfortable leaving them alone in my home. Working with Nelson, his beautiful wife Bree, and my daily crew, I can say that hiring Kobolt Construction was the best thing I've ever done for my house. I even got to meet their beautiful daughter who has blessed my life. Nelson's sister cleaned my house after the mess of the construction. She is as special and hard working as Nelson.
