What a terribly run business and absolutely rude workers! I paid with a card and what was supposed to be $8.65 turned to $9.19 on the receipt. I asked why and the worker said "under $10 - 50 cents charge." So I asked to cancel the payment and I would pay with cash. She said "well, everybody knows this rule" and basically wouldn't cancel and said "it's ok!" I've worked in a restaurant before, and it's not that hard and it wasn't like there were tons of customers. I was the only customer. I didn't think it was ok since there weren't any signs mentioning the extra charge to use a card, and she didn't tell me verbally. She was essentially shooing me away and saying there's no problem, and that I would know for "next time." I then asked to speak with a supervisor or manager and she said "not here right now" and refused to help me. She then pulled another worker who told her to call someone (I'm assuming a manager or someone who can approve this really simple transaction). She called and said "everybody knows this rule" while waiting for whoever it was to pick up. And I responded that if everybody did then I'd know too. No one picked up so the second worker then proceeded to ask for my cash without canceling the credit card transaction first, which I felt uncomfortable with because it looked like neither of them knew what they were doing. Been coming here since it opened many years ago. Would have to say its gone downhill a little but still OK. The customer service is pretty non-existant. Seating are is really small. We usually do take-out. We come here when we feel like quick, cheap Japanese food. Kids like the Philadelphia roll, California roll and usually the Chicken Katsu. Food is OK, not great. The nastiest sushi I have ever had. The lion King was utter trash plus the imitation crab tasted old. Do not waste your money on this place.

They've remodeled a bit and have since raised prices just a tad. But still cheap and easy basic Japanese food. Stick to the teriyaki anything items. The curry is way too watered down with an almost-brothy consistency. Their version of the Lion King is CA roll with a thin layer of fresh-from-the-freezer salmon with too much teriyaki sauce thrown on top. If you're used to Sushi House's Lion King roll, don't order this. You will be disappointed. Tempura was okay. The batter consistency was too thick and also, not your typical tempura. Wanna cheap meal? This is the spot in Alameda. It has a really tiny dining area. I ordered the Chicken Katsu. It was filling with a house salad and a macaroni salad too. Very small restaurant - a 2 top, 2-3 tops and a 6 top tables when we ate here. My son and I got the chicken teriyaki bento ($6) with four pieces of California roll, rice and two types of noodles - one hot, one chilled. The chicken tasted like it was grilled with the teriyaki sauce on the side, nothing fantastic. Imitation crab is used in the California Roll. The hot noodles had a few pieces of diced shrimp and veggies and the chilled noodles were white with cucmbers and a white sauce that is hard to describe, but was my favorite part of the meal. We both thought it was a lot of food for the price but nothing that stood out taste-wise. Husband got the chicken katsu/gyoza bento (~$7) with rice and the two types of noodles. He liked everything. Gyoza and katsu were not greasy, and the katsu had a good crunch on the breading. We also ordered a New York roll (shrimp and avocado) for ~$2.80 and a shrimp tempura/unagi temaki - can't remember the price. All was good. This restaurant didn't have nigiri, just sushi rolls and temaki. We decided to sit and eat, and our sushi was given to us before our main meal. Good value for the price. Been going to kobe~ya restaurant for the past 20 years, and it's always good for the price, but this time the chicken Teriyaki smelled rotten, I notified the owner that the food she was serving was rotten and it looked like it was boiled with no grill marks and drenched with hot caned Teriyaki sauce using the microwave. Salmon Teriyaki over rice, Salmon-katsu over rice, or Beef Teriyaki over rice bento boxes are $6.00 each. Each box comes w/ salad & the daily special (the cold white noodles are the best!). They also have an eight-item $2.00 Menu which includes hearty portion of fresh, hot Edamame (boiled soybean). Bento boxes range from $7-$9ish bucks. Sushi rolls start as low as $4 and the most expensive roll tops out at $9ish. They have banh mi's (vietnamese sandwiches), hand rolls, soup, tempura options, and much more. It's a small kitchen, so if you're planning to order a lot, call in ahead of time. (they use to owned this place). there is no resemblance. the quality isn't there, just some semblance of quantity. entree:new york roll(3.20) agedashi(2) tempera side (5) chicken curry(5) tempera- 3 carrots, one broculli crown, one yam, 3 prawns. the veggies were okay but the prawns was doughy. so i stripped one prawn and ate it naked, (sans dough). blah tasting. all the flavors were in the dough (msg). btw, the batter wasn't the typical japanese panko but seems like the batter that comes with chinese fried prawns. agadashi-2 tofu cubes with a gelatin glaze on it. dipping sauce provided. this didn't look fried to me. new york roll - little wasabi provided. 6 small pieces. this item was the only item that seem authentic. ok. chicken curry-some pieces of very tender chicken with potatoes and carrot in a curry based soup. yes, SOUP!. read more

I've been coming to Kobe Ya for the past ten years and have always loved it for tasty, affordable, quick Japanese. I remember many a fond visit, sipping on their piping hot, complimentary tea on cold foggy days, while waiting for my to-go order. I've always enjoyed their miso soup and, shrimp tempura, and various bento box combos. My personal favorite is the crispy salmon katsu. So good! But alas, something has changed at Kobe Ya. There have been changes. It has now become: The Krusty Krab. Yes, it appears Mr. Krabs is now running the show and they nickel-and-dime your for everything. Gone are the nice pleasantries of the past. Want to use your credit/debit card? That'll be 50¢. Want an extra thimble of katsu sauce. Another 50¢. Want a cup for the complimentary hot tea. Good luck hunting down one from the staff, as they are never kept up front anymore. And the cashier/phone/customer service? Yes, Squidward is now at the helm, and he could care less about friendly customer service. Never mind that EVERY single time you ask for a SIDE of tempura-about $7- and you *specifically* ask for a "SIDE" of tempura, they always ring up a tempura bento which costs more. Yeah, it's happened about three times, no matter how much I emphasize "just a SIDE of tempura". The upshot to this all is: Spongebob is still on the grill, and he still knows how to fry up them Krabby Patties. And they're good. Especially for the price. Crispy salmon katsu and tempura, pretty decent chicken and beef teriyaki. Awesome rice noodle salad (wish I knew what that stuff was called). Is it the best? No, but it's quick and affordable in a pinch, and will satisfy your craving for Japanese food. Sometime I leave thinking, "Wow that was a good meal and can't beat the price!". Kobe Ya caters mainly to students from Alameda HS across the street. A lot of small, simple dishes that can be prepared quickly from two to five bucks each. Kids these days don't know how good they have it. When I was in High School our only options were fast food and a nasty ass cafeteria. Kobe Ya isn't exactly high end dining but if you've only got an hour and a few bucks it works out well. Their business card says 'The fastest Sushi Samurai in the West'. They are indeed fast, but Sushi Samurai is a little generous. There is no sashimi, no nigiri, only some jive ass rolls (thanks nobu). My unagi roll contained only small pieces of eel and the rice tasted a little off. Yamamoto Tsunemoto would have scowled at the Sushi Samurai and he would have hung his head and crept off into the back room. Still, it's fine for what it is. read more

Today was a return visit to Kobe Ya after a roughly 2 year absence. These are not the original owners.The decor has changed....it's not as bright and cheerful as I recall the original decor to be. Though it seemed a tad cleaner. The recipes seems to have been passed on to the current owners but the quality isn't what it used to be. My daughter and I had the beef teriyaki, kappa roll and inari. Tastewise the beef teriyaki was average though it became less appealing after about 10 minutes - the teriyaki sauce had a gelatinous quality. The tofu skin on the inari was tough but flavorful. The rice seemed to be a lower quality of rice (yes, I can taste and feel the difference!). The cucumber in the kappa roll was fresh. The sushi rice didn't have enough rice vinegar. The lady behind the cash register was friendly. While taking my order, she would intermittently yell out to the cook what needed to be prepared. A little annoying but hey, for a joint like this, I guess it's the norm. You get your own plastic utensils or disposable chopsticks, get your soy sauce from the communal bottle and bus your own table when you're done. We didn't have to wait long though the hot food was served before the cold. Overall, I see this place appealing to starving student, those on a tight budget, or those who simply are starving! If you're looking for a one $ dollar sign meal in Alameda with great portions and good taste, Kobe-ya is your place to go. Its a sushi to-go place and theyre very efficient, if you do decide on eating here though, make sure you have a small group, seating isnt usually set for big groups. a group of 5 or 6 is okay. Sushi rolls here are cheap ranging from $3.50-$7 for a full 8-piece roll. even the deep fried sushi theres no upcharge. and any of the rolls you can get deep fried. (yum!) haha and the bento boxes are well worth it for the price as well. overall the price of this place is very inexpensive. The 2 stars comes from the California Roll only. I tried this place simply because a couple people here liked it. I live in Alameda so I've seen this place busy a LOT, but apparently it's only good to high school students. When I went there the lady at the counter was so busy chatting with her friend that she had to ask me to repeat my order 2 times. After saying my order the 3rd time she gave me a total that didn't sound right. I asked her if she got everything and she said yes, I then grabbed the drink that I told her about and she said "oh you wanted a drink", OBVIOUSLY too concerned with the conversation she was having with her friend in back. It was NO surprise that the food wasn't good, BUT, I was pleasantly surprised that 1 of the 7 things I ordered was good. 1 out of 7 isn't HORRIBLE if we're talking Vegas odds, but when it comes to food, and especially sushi, YES, that's horrible. Bottom line is, if you don't know what good sushi tastes like, this place might work out for you. Cheap, quick and tasty. This is a great lunch spot. Best to get there early to claim your seating or else the high schoolers will take over the place. I love the white noodles...so yummy! This is a pretty small place, nothing fancy, but it's decent food at a very good price: my kind of place. I ordered the chicken katsu which comes with rice. It was a a little bit on the thinner side, but I guess that's just how it has to be if you want fast service. Still, it was pretty good. If you want water, there's one of those 5 gallon sports water bottles that you can get the water from yourself. On the same cart right below it is a tray for your dirty dishes. Again, definitely not a fancy place, but my kind of place nonetheless. Seating is somewhat limited, but then again the place is probably not much bigger than your bedroom. My Kobe-ya experience just keeps getting worse and worse. I once ate here at least twice a week and now, I stay away. For the last few months I let Kobe-Ya abuse me time and time again. First it was a case of fatty beef teriyaki. Then it was warm salad. Then my tempura was so oily the veggies inside were complete mush. Then I noticed that they keep the to containers stacked behind the partition wall, with salad sitting in them until someone orders something to go. My question is... how friggin' long was my iceberg lettuce salad sitting in the hot kitchen before I ate it?? I won't be back here for a while. Went here on a Saturday night to grab a quick bite. I expected a sorta cheap style sushi place and didn't go in with super high expectations but had just an awful experience. Ordered a tonkatsu curry expecting a Japanese style curry and got this orange Thai curry drizzled on tonkatsu. I was expecting the brown Japanese curry, so disappointed. Ordered agedashi tofu and that was delicious, but they forgot my New York roll and took so long getting it out that I had to cancel the order and ask for a refund because I was done eating, having lost an appetite after getting the strange tonkatsu curry. Cheap bento boxes filled with deliciousness with very little waiting! Great location next to TapEx for a yummy drink to go with your meal. I used to eat at this place on the way home from school back in the day (Alameda High students can go there ON their lunch break, but I went to St. Joseph's for high school). Now I go there occasionally for a cheap, relatively healthy (not fried fast food) meal. I only get teriyaki bento boxes because I don't like seafood or most other sushi's, heh. But it's always been good, and you can ask for extra sauce for a few more cents. I used to love this place before they remodel. But now they have new owners and they make the worst food. I had my usual shrimp tempura which taste like same old used frying oil. My b/f have his teriyaki chicken and it was cold. We ask them to warm it up but it was still the same. Even the rice was hard!! Also the rolls that they feature taste gross, they use the salmon from Costco which was not meant to be use on sushi. The only thing I like there is their specials that come with the bento box. I heard this place changed owners, and it looks like it has. The place has been remodeled and the the faces behind the counter look less Japanese and more "other Asian." I decided to try this place out tonight for old time's sake. Don't tell anybody that I broke my weekday meat-fast on some Chicken Teriyaki from this place. And to my surprise it tasted the same as always. Teriyaki is a hard dish to screw up, so using Teriyaki as a way to rate Japanese places is pretty useless, but I do believe that the Teriyaki here is superior to others and I am glad a change in ownership did not mean a drop in quality and I don't feel so guilty about violating the meat-fast. I'm pretty sure I once spotted Jason Kidd at Kobe-Ya once. A few years ago I was working for the Rec Department in Alameda doing an afterschool program. Some of my kids had the hankering for some Kobe-ya so we went. When we sat down we saw a tall guy that looked familiar. Kid: Hey, that's Jason Kidd. Me: Can't be. K: He went to St. Joe's here in Alameda. M: So, the Net's probably aren't off today, and if they did, it probably wouldn't be a west coast off day. For a guy to fly cross country for one day is pretty retarded. That's when the proverbial shit hit the fan. First, I probably shouldn't have used the word "retarded" in front of the kids. This place is gross. I ordered the tonkatsu curry and the lion king roll. First off the curry - This is not Japanese curry nor any other type of curry I have tried before. It tastes like there's a lot of coconut milk in there and in essence tasted just plain nasty. To top if off, they dunked my tonkatsu inside a vat of curry which looked more like some sort of cloudy soup. So basically my tonkatsu was all nasty and wet. I let the curry sit in it's container because I could not get myself to eat it (believe me I tried). After letting it sit for a while, I noticed that the curry split into two sedimentary layers (similar to oil and water). The top layer was this nasty looking yellow cloudy miso-looking mixture while the bottom layer looked like brown water. What kind of curry does this? I've tried hundreds of different kinds of curry and I've never seen any type of curry do this. As for the lion king roll - man...I don't even want to talk about it even though it was the best part of the meal (which is not saying much). Yes it's only $6, but I would rather pay double that and get the lion king roll at Sushi House. I ordered sushi New York avocado and shrimp roll the 12 piece. So about 7 pieces in something didn't taste right. I'm also about seven months pregnant. Then I decide to open one of the Sushi's cause it tastes weird. Upon opening one and taking a look at the shrimp. It looked old!! At least two to three days old. Or maybe it had been left out. I don't know. So then I proceeded to open all the sushi that was left and the same thing. The shrimp looked old and smelled a little weird. At that point I just got up and walked out. And I've been sick ever since. Diarrhea while your pregnant can be severe. It now been going on two weeks since and I was also hospitalized 2 times already with dehydration.
