Five of us had dinner and our experience was mixed. The Shabu-Shabu all you can eat was good, abundant, and similarly priced to other places, including Chinese hot pots. Good sake (and tequila!) selection at the bar. Our problem was with the service. This was a Wednesday evening, only three tables were taken, and yet the waitstaff was quite aloof and unprofessional. We paid nearly $400 for four people, including an included (e.g, not optional!) 20% service charge, so we expected more in terms of service (checking on us more frequently, removing used plates, pouring our drinks and water, asking if we needed anything, etc). Our waiter disappeared several times for extended periods. I hate to say this, but perhaps this gives a bad name to the idea of charging for service regardless of whether it is good or bad. I'm all for waiters earning a living wage, and am perfectly willing to tip generously if the service is exceptional, but, at least with this particular establishment, it seems the owners want to cut corners and are not willing to train their staff adequately. This was a birthday celebration dinner, we all had old experiences with other locations! On arrival there is limited parking available and we went around the block a couple times to scope a spot. When we all arrived we had some starters of hamachi poppers, as well as shared a couple of rolls. We tried some cold Sakai and a beer. We ordered the sukiyaki "hot pot" for the table and three different meets to put in our bowls. All came with an egg for washing the meat through. Loads of veggies and noodles, bowls of rice to complete the yummy meal. Service was attentive, however when our pot was really boiling we needed to ask someone to turn the heat down and finally off. Amazing sushi and hot pot restaurant! I had never done hot pot before but I am in love now!! They have an amazing dinner for two special that's only $60! Soup, salad, hot pot and ice cream!!! I am not able to eat seaweed but they can substitute their sushi with soy wraps and they are so good! I get their salmon crunch roll and dream of it! Absolutely stuffed! What a great meal! This was our 4th time here and the sukiyaki is amazing. You get a dipping egg on the side and it comes loaded with veggies. We always add some extra protein. Tonight we did the sirloin and shrimp combo but the rib eye is so good too! The ribeye is a little more tender because it's fattier than the sirloin which has more of a bite to it. The broth is sweet and flavorful. Highly recommend. Pretty decent happy hour too, we got lucky and caught the last 10 minutes of it! The shishitos were spicy but the seasoning was very good. The inori (tofu skins) were delicious, sweet and salty. The chicken karagge was good, I would only get it during happy hour though. The service is prompt and the waitstaff is very nice and attentive. 20% service fee included but we tipped on top of that too (tip your servers people) The restaurant itself is so cute! The decor feels traditional and modern at the same time. The bathroom is wallpapered with Japanese newspapers and advertisements which is pretty cool to look at. For happy hour we had edamame, krab sunomono, bronco roll, chicken karaage, hot tokoyo & a few other rolls. Everything was great!! I doubt there's anything on the menu that I wouldn't like. Cute little place, oddly smelled of pizza, but we settled into a spot at the bar and were comfortable for a drink while we waited for sushi to go. We stuck with basic rolls and all were very good. Our bartender was serving tables in addition to working the bar, so he was a bit slow to get our drinks, but another friendly person stepped in and happily helped out. The drink menu looked phenomenal and I had a hard time deciding, but ultimately went with a Tito & Germaine, mostly due to the clever name, but also because it sounded good. Blown away. I think this take the cake for the best place I have eaten in Denver. Everything is just so delicious and fun. Let's start from the top - we made a reservation for Friday night around 8:45pm, which I highly recommend doing. It's a small joint with only so many seats and these seats were filled from the moment we walked in to when we left (around 9:45pm). We were sat in the back corner next to the window, which to me was arguably the best seat in the house because you can see the whole restaurant and the street, plus it just felt more spacious. Our waitress was incredible. It was our first time having Shabu Shabu/Sukiyaki and she walked us through the entire process and was so laid back about everything. Seriously, this girl just oozed chill vibes. At the end of the meal she introduced us to the house shot which was just delicious, although I can't remember what it contained (sprint and plum, plus something else?). Back to main though - we started with hot sake and the El Shogun, both of which were delicious and I highly recommend. If you love ginger like I do, absolutely try the El Shogun. We then started off with the Miso Glazed Eggplant, which was so hearty my husband asked me what it was stuffed with, to which I replied nothing! It's just how meaty and delicious and perfectly cooked it was. The ramen slider with an egg is a must try. It was a bit smaller than expected but had big big flavor. Plus, it's so unique and fun - a memorable dish. We also added the Las Vegas roll to our appetizer spread, which I would have a lot to say about but we ate it so quickly it's hard to break down the flavors from memory :) This brings up to the main item - this sukiyaki and the American Wagyu Chuck. The beef dipped in the egg was like a delicate punch in the mouth. And explosion of umami. Something that will come up in my dreams anytime I go to bed hungry. While the beef was the star that's not to say the sukiyaki itself paled in comparison. The broth, noodles, and veggies cooked down to a delectable soup, which was so much food we had to take it Togo. If you know me, you know I really enjoy and appreciate great sushi. So, you'll also appreciate my honesty when I share that Kobe An LoHi has some opportunities for improvement. Here's the upside: the fish was fresh, tasted great but was thinly sliced when thinking about the sushi nigiri. Here's the downsides: our two rolls, four orders of sushi nigiri, and one beer. Guess the total bill. I'll wait. $100. A little steep IMO. Maybe I'm off, but we've had amazing sushi and more of it, for less. Second downside were the flavor combinations. We were going for spicy and never really had spicy. The flavors didn't meld well together and weren't anything memorable. The incredibly sweet sauce on the octopus should have been left off. It was hard to taste anything else. We left disappointed, but the fish was fresh, so there's that. read more

Immersive tatami atmosphere I went to Kobe An for dinner with my partner and we were thought the Japanese vibe was captured well. We arrived at 8 pm and did not have to wait as we had made a reservation online a few days in advance. The staff was really attentive and made sure we had everything we needed throughout the meal. The atmosphere and environment were amazing, especially the option to request a table in a tatami room where you have to take off your shoes and sit on the ground. We will have to do that with friends or family soon. For the dishes, we ordered the teriyaki dinner bento which was great value for money as it came with tempura, miso, edamame, rice, and chicken. My partner ordered the Hot pot meal, which was more than enough for two people to share. Although the food was good, we didn't feel like the quality of meat for the hot pot was outstanding. However, the value for money was impressive, especially considering the immersive atmosphere and attentive service. My partner and I both had never done any sort of hot pot let alone Japanese hot pot, and asked repeatedly for our waitress to explain how it worked, any recommendations, tips, etc, and it was like pulling teeth. This woman would not help whatsoever. I asked her three separate clarifying questions to try and get a feel for it and she was so incredibly unhelpful i could not believe it. Onto the food... we ordered some sushi and the ramen slider ahead of the hotpot, the sushi being fine and the slider being good. The hot pot... I don't know if this is because we truly had no idea what we were doing due to the server not answering my questions at all, but it sucked. We got the one with the miso broth, and it had no flavor. It was so bad. We ordered one thing of meat and decided that was it because it was disappointing. This is a great spot to enjoy a cozy dinner with friends. I only had shabu shabu, so I can't really give feedback on that part of the menu, but my friend liked the sushi she ordered. The ramen slider was super rich and filling, if you are not really hungry I would share that between friends. The shabu shabu was incredibly filling, but apparently some VERY hungry people order the "endless" or bottom less portion which I can not imagine. I ordered wagyu chuck. What we're you talking about with the couple you might ask... well here's a quote the man said to you that you laughed off "if you can't make a million a year you don't deserve to be alive breathing the same air as Me" Another quote from your friend "soju, sonju, can't tell them apart just like Japanese and Korean people they all look alike" this was absolutely absurd This was 30 minutes in to our $140 dinner. You proceeded to give this couple free tequila shots, sonju etc. when we were leaving you threw up the fake praying hands gesture thanking us for coming in. You are the worst business owner I have ever come across. And it's really too bad because we live a block away, but maybe we just weren't dressed pretentious enough for you to realize we also have money. We are trying to support local businesses during the stay at home order and we were craving sushi. After browsing Yelp's Denver curbside and delivery collection we found Kobe An LoHi. They had great reviews and even offered free delivery in a .5 mile radius (bonus). They have their full sushi and izakaya menus available and Skuiyaki cook at home kits too - we will definitely be trying one of these next. First off, super thankful for the delivery option. It was fast and made it so we didn't have to worry about going out. We are so grateful during these weird times. Our driver contacted us when he arrived and it was a quick hand off. Thank you! We went with three rolls - the spider roll, the salmon avocado roll, and the spicy California roll. All of them were amazing. I especially loved the spider roll - the soft shell crab was unreal, and the cucumber/avocado/kaiware complimented the crab so well. All of the sushi was really tasty. This was honestly the worst restaurant experience I've had in the 4 years I've lived here. We made reservations for 730, didn't get sat until 755. The waiter had no idea about anything on the menu (this was several of our first time doing Japanese BBQ), and one would think that considering we cook it in front of us, that some sort of direction would be given after we asked for it. Then we didn't see our server for the rest of the night unless we got up and found her (the place was half full by the time we got our food), we did the restaurant week menu and had to go up and ask for our dessert. Then the bill... there were 6 of us, 4 of us did restaurant week, and our server did not write down which person had what drink, so when we got our check, our server gave us a pen and asked that we circle the things we got (we were splitting the check 3 ways, so how does circling help on one check?) all of this for a 2.5 hour dinner where we did most of the work, for an automatic 20% tip on a $150+ meal for 2 people. Absolutely horrendous experience, not sure if they were just having a rough day, but I will not be going back. Added: not accommodating to vegan's at all. We had one vegan in our group (for actual health purposes, not a choice), and they could not understand that we wanted vegan options for restaurant week (denied), then we were told we HAD to order off the restaurant week menu for the entire table. read more

My first hot pot in Colorado! It's so perfect for a chilly day. The table had just enough room for our hot pot stuff AND our appetizers/sushi because we were quite greedy with the food there. The price can really stack up. Quality of the meat was pretty good, I think! The beef really melts in your mouth, and just thinking about it makes my mouth water. After a long drive back from the Rocky Mountains, me and my fiance were craving some warm soup, so we thought shabu shabu would be perfect. We checked out Kobe An LoHi since there were lots of positive reviews on Yelp. Parking is a little tough, but we were able to find street parking on one of the nearby streets. We had to wait around 45 mins on a Friday night, wasn't too bad, since they'll text you when your table is ready. At first, we considered the AYCE shabu shabu for $30, but wanted to try some of the other meats they had. If you pick the AYCE, I think your meat options are limited to pork belly or sirloin beef only. The regular shabu shabu comes with your choice in meat, choice of broth, and a plate of veggies and noodles. We ended up getting 1 plate of wagyu and 1 plate of ribeye and upgraded to the miso broth ($3+). I liked the wide variety of veggies that it came with such as pumpkin, onions, carrots, cabbage, and more. They also packed it with noodles underneath all the veggies - udon and vermicelli! Definitely was full after eating all of that. It also comes with two separate dipping sauces, one ponzu and one sesame-based one - my favorite with the wagyu was the sweet sesame sauce. So much flavor and it paired so nicely with the fattiness of the meat. We also ordered the Wagyu Surf & Turf Roll, which comes with lobster tempura inside and wagyu beef on top of the sushi roll. There's a lot of other sushi rolls available on their menu, but this one was def worth every bite! Although our dinner was near their closing time, we didn't feel rushed at all. I have been going to Kobe An since I was a child at the Lakewood location. We visit the new location monthly, and the food and ambiance have always been among our favorites. Tonight, we discovered that they have been adding a service charge without disclosing it. While I respect the practice and believe in servers earning at least 20%, I am frustrated by the lack of transparency and communication. This should have been communicated through a conversation with our server, not something we had to discover by reviewing the check. When dining at a nice restaurant, a party of two should not have to check for added gratuity unless it is a policy for the entire establishment. The lack of communication is very discouraging and left us with a poor experience. I hope they change their communication approach, as this affects the overall dining environment and has tainted our trust in this establishment. read more

Perfect stop on a chilly rainy night! I really like the decor and warm atmosphere. The unique wood columns and ceiling caught my eye. While we waited for our table, we got drinks at the bar. The bartender was friendly and showed us how the ice sphere was made for our 12 year yamazaki whisky. It was very smooth and delicious. Our table of 7 selected the Shabu-Shabu endless option with miso broth and the traditional katsuobushi broth, half sirloin beef and half pork tenderloin. Added shrimp on the side. I liked the miso broth flavor and I added several splashes of chili oil to spice up my bowl. The veggie and noodle plate had a good variety. The only little hiccup, we called ahead at 7:30pm for a reservation and were told they could seat us in an hour at about 8:30pm. We waited for an additional 30 minutes before being seated around 9pm. Pay attention to the menu, if you eat Shabu-Shabu, it's $12.00 for the pot of water and vegetable that suck, not even what you would expect from a Shabu-Shabu place- Cabbage cut into very tiny 1/4" pieces (more suitable for eating coleslaw), udon was frozen and dry (not the way the Japanese would serve it), our "premium meat" was cheap grade and 8 slices, (not what you would expect For $19.00 extra).....now on to the service-absolutely horrible! Took forever to get any service, then had to ask for the rice, had to ask for extra sauce and had to ask for drinks. They were quicker to bring our bill than serve us what we needed. Will not return to this place as the Shabu is the worst I ever had. Maybe owners should visit Japan or maybe LA (little Tokyo) and get some lessons on doing Shabu Shabu. I had high hopes for this place but unfortunately it was way below my expectations. The ambiance is nice, dark lit restaurant with comfortable and intimate seating. The waitresses and host were nice and friendly giving overall customer service. The disappointment started with the food. We first ordered appetizers, which all came out at inconsistent times. However the apps were good. The gyoza was nicely flavored and seared. The edamame was good, nothing special. We ordered the "Endless Shabu Shabu" which I believe was a certain time frame and you had a two hour limit of time. Everyone has to participate in the table if you are doing the endless option as well. We ordered the Sukiyaki broth and I would say this was by far the sweetest broth I have ever tasted. Generally the broth is a sweet savory broth, this one was extreme. So sweet to the point that's all you could taste... a thick brown sugar syrup coating in veggies and broth.. The boiler in the center is inconsistent and can't be controlled by temp. It can be only controlled by being on or off by removing the pot off the boiler. With that, the broth kept burning or harden with the sugar if we kept it in or off the boulder making the experience not easy. We unfortunately all left hungry and did not enjoy the meal. I wouldn't necessarily not recommend this place given I haven't tried the other broths however I'll most likely never return and don't intent to mention this place either. read more

This is the only shabu shabu in Denver and it was a good experience. Our service was great! The restaurant is small so getting reservation is recommended esp when the cold comes, I am sure their patio will be closed. We started off we the infamous ramen slider with an egg, and this was amazing! It really does taste like ramen without the broth. They made the noodles as the buns! This had all the flavors. We tried the sukiyaki, this has a sweet and savory broth. It was very sweet, so we added soy sauce to add more savory and some of the chili oil they add. I like spicy over sweet, so I wish there was more to make this spicy. It came with miso soup, a bowl of rice, noodles, and veggies. We ordered scallops and the waygu chuck for our proteins. The noodles and veggies are already in the broth so you cook your meat and seafood to your liking. Shabu shabu means swish swish- so that's what your suppose to do with your meat esp if you want to enjoy the marble on the waygu. This is a lot of food, good for parties of 2 or more! To end our dinner we ordered the fried ice cream and I was so happy!!! Not many places offer fried ice cream and this is the best, crunchy, warm and cold! Started off with shishito peppers which were borderline inedible because of how salty they were. Between the split wood panel patio door, wood siding and decorative plants, and the lanterns draped overhead - you feel like you've been transported to Japanese countryside. They have a wonderful menu of traditional Japanese appetizers, Shabu Shabu, sushi, Izakaya, and a full alcohol menu. We got there just in time for happy hour and enjoyed a few delicious sushi rolls! (I came for the Shabu Shabu but didn't realize there was a 2-person minimum to partake and my friend sadly was not in a Shabu mood. I will be back for that Shabu!) We ordered the Edamame, Bronco Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll, Hamachi Poppers, and Diablo Roll! All of the sushi rolls were outstanding! Fresh and high quality ingredients and phenomenal flavor! The restaurant and patio were nice and clean and so quaint and intimate. I could have spent hours on that outdoor patio. Our server was fantastic, she was so kind and attentive and hospitable. She checked on us often, gave wonderful sushi recommendations, and made sure that we were always taken care of! I can't wait to come back soon, especially for Shabu Shabu. Where do I begin? With how much fun shabu-shabu is? With how flawless the quality of each shabu-shabu ingredient was? With how totally worth it is to upgrade to the miso broth and melt in your mouth wagyu beef? With the fact that their sake menu is so perfectly curated to satisfy at any palate or price point that I totally disregarded the impressive list of 15 or so craft cocktails? All of these things informed a very pleasing dinner experience. The wagyu alone makes this destination dining to me, but I loved everything about the shabu-shabu, and the sushi and gyoza I sampled as well. I don't purport to be a sushi expert--I only ever order cooked or veggie rolls-- but I've had the shrimp tempura roll I ordered at a dozen highly-rated sushi places in town, and this was the best of all so far. They have an all you can eat shabu-shabu option for just $39! It's an excellent value, but I would not part with my delicious upgrades for anything. Understand what shabu-shabu is before you go. There's a great description on their website you should read before you go, but understand that it is a slow dining experience. If you're in a hurry and you've chosen this place, let them know and order sushi or izakaya items, not the shabu-shabu. The place isn't huge, and at 7 on a Sunday there was only one empty table. I recommend making a reservation. More deets: Decor: stylish furnishings and soft lighting are cozy bordering on romantic. Very date-worthy. Service: knowledgeable, kind, if a little scattered at times Strategy: They serve the sushi and izakaya stuff before shabu-shabu. This means foolishly filling up before the main event arrives if you order both. Do either/or, OR have your shabu-shabu first, then if you're still dying for that roll or dumpling, go ahead. Technique: Don't worry about not knowing how to cook various ingredients. The wait staff will teach you, and it's super easy to get the hang of. Best thing ever: "buy the kitchen a beer" is a menu item! I freaking love that. $1/beer. For ten bucks I bought everyone who worked there an after-shift drink! The more you know: Did you know shabu-shabu translates to swish-swish? And in my mouthy opinion that is the longest you should ever cook your flawless slices of wagyu beef. read more
