This place is amazing! I'm a newbie coffee drinker (think instant coffee sticks). Specialized coffee shops can be pretty intimidating for me. However, Brian has made me feel welcome at Koana and I really enjoyed my experience. Koana is a coffee and tea cafe. Everything that they list on the menu is sourced locally. They carry a variety of coffee in various grades which you can order by the cup or coffee bags. Brian, the owner of Koana is truly passionate and knowledgeable about coffee + tea; you can tell that he really enjoys sharing his passion with others with the amount of care he puts into your experience. I tried the morning glory coffee which was perfect and not too acidic. I also tried their champagne coffee which was a new experience for me. All were great! What a hidden gem! You definitely probably will not see this place unless someone recommends it and tells you about them but if you love coffee this place is a must when you're on the island. Brian definitely is an expert in his craft and you can tell he is passionate about this. If you're looking for a quick Starbucks type coffee this place is definitely not it. But if you want quality craft coffee I highly recommend this place. Each cup is brewed to perfection. He weighs and measures the brands prior to grinding them. Heats up the water to the exact temperature then times each cup to brew. The results is outstanding smooth delicious coffee! Even the dark roast is smooth! He has other things in the shop as well. As someone who has a career in third wave coffee, I have high high expectations for what good coffee is. Koana did not let me down! They have such a cool, personable atmosphere. And Brian has a very delicate pour over system in place. You can be 100% confident that you're getting the freshest, top quality cup of coffee from this place. I was surprised (in a good way) to see the timers, the equipment, and coffee laid across the counter. It's very clear that a lot of intention goes into the set up and brewing method. I asked the owner if he used local ingredients and he answered yes by saying something along the lines of the real question being "Why wouldn't you use local, organic ingredients?" And/or "Why wouldn't you use local organic ingredients here of all places?" Touché. I dig it. Very intentional ambiance. Once you enter you're struck with it: if depth were an aroma it would be the coffee bean, warmth would be the cacao nib. You may fancy a chat when you order, with the ultra friendly staff and owner. More knowledgeable than baristas in mainstream shops and voted best coffee in the state of Hawaii by Food & Wine Magazine in 2022. 100% recommend to visitors and locals alike. We ordered the black coffee and Hawaiian cacao tea: both rich, full, fantastic, but it was the tea for me. So yummy. A perfect pairing adventure for a morning date. The atmosphere was homey, the service excellent, and the coffee . . . whew damn, it was good. As we walked in, my wife and I were greeted by a friendly enough barista. She was helping another customer and told us politely while rubbing her nose that she'd be right with us. While preparing the water for our drinks, she scratched her ear a few times and wiped it on her clothing. The coffee was delicious, maybe it was the added oils, just wish that it was a full cup. Great friendly place in the sleepy town of Mountain View near the volcano. This is the place to get a hand made drip coffee, which the owner make by request. Also you will find free tastes of local chocolate and dry fruit you can buy on site. The owner is super kind and explain about the local activities. We came a party of 7 and he kindly greeted us with free cookies ! This place is something special. The ambiance is warm and inviting and you're immediately hit with the smell of coffee on entering. The shop does pour over coffee and tea, hot or iced, and the extra time it takes to make the coffee is 150% worth the wait. We got a lava mocha and the owner suggested a toasted marshmallow on top. I'm never one to say no to a toasted marshmallow, and the owner pulled out a blowtorch and perfected toasted it in front of me. The lava mocha was perfectly bitter with a hint of spice, slightly sweetened by the marshmallow. The owner is one of those guys you wish you could talk to forever. He offered great coffee suggestions, shared some of the history of the area, and gave us some recommendations for his favorite restaurants in Hilo. I wish we had found this place sooner. read more

We had a great time at Koana. We came in on our way to the Hilo airport and grabbed a pastry from the next-door Mt. View Bakery and then stopped in to Koana for some tea and a flight of coffee tastings. The owner (didn't actually catch his name) was extremely knowledgeable about the coffee of the island, the history, current politics of the industry, etc. If we didn't have a flight to catch we could have happily stayed and chatted with him for much longer. He was very generous with the pours and we could tell he just truly wanted to share his knowledge and love of coffee with us. If you're considering stopping in, don't hesitate! read more

What an experience, oh boy. This is a local gem with delicious in-house coffee, amazing variations and an owner who has a high passion for what he does! We tried medium-dark Koana infused with champagne, medium-dark pure (bought 2 bags, cause so so yummy), medium-dark infused with red whine, Lava shot, Lava mocha and Peaberry. If we had stayed longer, we would have gone back and back! He loves his community and everyone who walked I knew eachother and even the doggies get treats. Go, support a local business! Okay, so, we were on our way to Volcanoes National Park and added a coffee shop along the route because it was morning and Hawai'i and coffee. "Perfect", we thought. "It's a quick detour." My god. Don't think that way. Go to Koana, and go because it's one of the top experiences we had on the island. We wandered into this little shop in a 100-year old building. Brian (with an I, right?), the owner, was as excited about his craft and his shop as I've ever seen. This is a guy who knows design, understands presentation, appreciates attention to detail. He told us about the history of the town, the history of the building, the history of the island. And... he LOVES coffee. He's so passionate. His excitement is infectious. Have him serve you a pour-over as he explains the process to you. I derived so much joy and pleasure from observing someone who truly loves what he does. I tried two different coffees. I have never been able to drink black coffee, but I am now a convert. I loved the Kona Bloom, such a clear and crisp experience. The Monarch Geisha was something... transcendent. I will never think of coffee again. I AM NOT A COFFEE PERSON. And yet here I am. It was that good. We walked out of there with gifts for people we love back home. And we were so excited about trying the coffee we got that we actually went out and bought a French press for our Airbnb so we could drink amazing coffee every day. Koana is worth a trip to Mountain View on its own, but if you are headed to Volcanoes from Hilo you would be depriving yourself of an experience if you didn't stop here. read more

This coffee shop deserves all the flowers in the world. My friends and I dropped by on our way to Kona from Hilo, and it was just the human interaction and coffee experience we were looking for during our stay on the Big Island. The owner, Brian, is extremely knowledgable about coffee and is able to exactly pinpoint what you'd like out of all the coffee bean selections he has to offer. He pays very close attention to his craft and it clearly shows in the quality of coffee he served us. My tip for anyone visiting is to order a lava shot with their coffee. It is a shot (actually a bit more) of drinking chocolate spiced with cayenne pepper, turmeric, ginger, and other spices and it was an absolutely lovely pair with the cup of coffee I'd ordered. They also gave us a free sample of their lava shot and it was incredible. This spot has really good quality coffee brewed with care. We got several medium speciality coffees and one geisha -- it's worth the money. These unique flavors can't really be found anywhere else.
