Knight's Market popped on my radar thanks to Yelp Talk as I was looking for more specialized cuts of meat. I was DELIGHTED to discover via their website that they sold beef slices (thinly sliced top round) for rouladen. Rouladen is a german dish that's part of my partner's Christmastime tradition. So, thanks to Knight's -- we were able to celebrate/maintain some kind of tradition! I ordered 12pcs and it came in two packages of 6 pcs each (~3lbs) at $12.99/lb. We were able to cut each piece in half so next time, I'll just order 6 pcs or 1 package! I called a couple days in advance for a Christmas Eve pick up and it was pretty seamless! Knight's Market is pretty easy to miss as it's a nondescript gray building, but worth a visit for an order ahead specialized meat order. If you need something immediately, the butcher inside Sparrow Market may be better as Knight's Market is relatively small and only has more common types of meats/cuts stocked regularly. read more

The Knight's group got a million plus in COVID bailout dollars and now want to squeeze out more bucks from customers who have supported them for decades. Time to look for other options. read more

Knight's is a small space, as others have said, though kind of a big name around Ann Arbor. I'm not sure the reputation is justified. I'd say their meats are on par with but not any better than those at most other local butcher shops and supermarkets, and decidedly inferior to those at a few others. People rave about their hamburger, and restaurants advertise using it, but don't I see (or more importantly, taste) anything special about it. Same goes for the pork and beef roasts and sausage we've bought from Knight's. The selection of fresh meats is very small. You can special order nearly anything, though that's where we ran into a problem recently. We ordered a goose for Thanksgiving and were told that though the goose came to them frozen, they would have it thawed for us when we picked it up. But when I stopped by to pick it up the day before Thanksgiving, it was just coming off the truck, frozen solid. I was told that if I put it in water overnight it would be ready to roast for Thanksgiving dinner, but the thought of leaving it out at near room temperature for that long gave me pause. When they said I could return it, I did, and the clerk walked it right back out to the truck. If Knight's isn't a convenient stop for you, I don't see much reason to go there. read more

I love this market, as a next door neighbor it is so convenient. They have the most common meats and ingredients. They are small-so they don't have everything. On occasion they don't always have ALL of what I need, but that's to be expected of a small downtown market. Yep, I'm giving this market 5 stars, and I don't even eat much meat! I do know, however, from my meat-itarian fella (as well as from many a townie) that Knight's has some of the best meat around. Not only do they have good cuts, but they occasionally have fantastic sales as well. If I were to create the perfect corner market, I may very well come up with something like Knight's. It's simple, it's solid, it's classic (check out the sturdy wooden shelves). They have all the staples that you need in a pinch (baking supplies, pop, cereal, even a small wine section), while also stocking some locally-made specialties (Ann Arbor Tortilla Company chips, Michigan-made granola). They even have a small produce selection in the tall coolers It's way more market than "party store," which I love. Walking in there reminds me of the small-town family-owned grocers I grew up with -- Kusterer's and Schneider's. It feels just a tad old-fashioned, but in the best possible way. You're probably not going to do all of your grocery shopping here, but they have good quality products, particularly when you need something quickly. There's no sign (though you can see the knight chess-piece cutouts), but it's just as well -- if you live in the neighborhood -- or even if you don't -- you're liable to get curious and stop in anyhow. Helpful butchers, they can give you great advice and will cut a product exact to even crazy specifications. They sell quality fresh meat here and will show you whatever your heart desires before you commit to a purchase. They can even do specialty grinds for you, mmm veal and beef with that hint of pork for a fine meatball. That is happiness to a picky carnivore like me. The rest of the market is smallish and has some basic staples and a few less staple but fun picks. It's not a place where you can do all of your shopping but it works well in a pinch. It is not marked well so people like my mom get lost when you send them here and you may end up getting an emergency cell phone call in an important meeting. Yes, true story. That was annoying. This is the closest thing I'll probably ever have to a town butcher. I first heard about the meat market while eavesdropping on some 30-something housewives (very attractive, btw) dressed up for a night out at Melange 2 years ago, talking about how they loved to go in and would cut pieces of raw tenderloin and eat it, before they made dinner for the night. (On another note, they could've just been wives and not housewives, but there was a certain "Desperate Housewives" feel to the group). So, since then I've been meaning to go, but I don't often cook with meat so, it never came to mind. Until I needed some pretty flank steak to go with a salad I was making. I was unimpressed with the grocery store selection, so I called them up in the morning. 2 pounds, flank, last name. When do you need it by? noon? we'll have it ready an hour before. thanks. You can't beat a small, non-chain, neighborhood convenience store. Especially one that carries all kinds of random stuff in addition to the staples and a fantastic selection of quality meats. Knights is the kind of place where you can go, see what's fresh, and then pick up whatever accoutrements you may need to complete a meal. Cheeses, sauces, beverages, and more. It's all here. The location doesn't look like a shop so if you're new to the area or coming from out of town you might miss it. But it's right by the bakery with the cool artwork on the street (lots of wire). Parking is in the private lot but if it were to be full you could easily park on the street. read more

How in the blue blazes have I lived in Ann Arbor for over 1.5 years and not ever gone to Knights Market? This is what I asked myself after my second visit in the span of a few days. Everyone knows Knights is the place for meat. And for those amazing dinner rolls (kept conveniently right at the register). However, my fiance and I will often buy all of the necessary items for an entire meal here (this is our designated source for spaghetti night accouterments) and this is also where we get our pup's bones (they're HUGE and meaty). I also found a really nice sparkling summer wine here for $7.99! I haven't thoroughly explored Knights yet, but just from my two cursory visits I can say that this will definitely be a place I come back to again and again. It reminds me of convenience stores from "up north"--nothing flashy, no Plum Market-esque bells and whistles, just little, unassuming places with a well edited stock of good quality stuff. Lots of meat, plus some corner-store basics. The eggs are mostly in styrofoam for $2.69, or occasionally hand-lettered for $8; they miss the $4-5 organic range entirely. Batteries are in 4-packs. General "run to the store for milk" stuff, but probably not a full shopping trip. If you want meat, though.... this is basically the window for the Knight's warehouse. If it used to walk, they probably have it in bulk. read more

If a restuarant in Ann Arbor uses Knight's meat, you know you're going to get a good burger. It is so tasty and juicy, and like Hi-Five said it back in the day, "Quality time". The place that sells that meat is Knight's Market over on the West Side. You know they grind is good when folks don't even put a sign on the side of their building stating who they is. They rely totally on word on the street. I walked in expecting an intimate butcher's block, but they actually are a small market... they sell kitchen staples like milk, cereal, mac 'n cheese, vinegar, barbeque sauce, and some produce. The clerk highly suggested the different rubs for the meat there. I bought the pork rub and can't wait to try it. That sounds really porno-ish, but a rub is actually some herbs that you can cook with. I couldn't resist buying the teeny container of Ben and Jerry's there. At first I hadn't heard about Knight's Market at all, and then all of a sudden everyone wouldn't shut up about it. I got so worked up hearing person after person tell me this place was a god-send that I actually made a trip (via bicycle) over there, figuring there was some heavenly store I'd been missing out on for years. And I go inside and it's... a dingy convenience store. Plus the woman behind the counter glared at me, which, granted, I was warned about ahead of time. Everyone says the meat here is the best in town, but I say Sparrow's is better. And if you're not coming here for the meat, there's no reason to make a trip out here. Again, it's just a convenience sore. Anything you want here you can get a few blocks away at the Food Co-Op (where they have much more and are nice to you). Why two stars, then, instead of one? This may not be the god-send I was told it would be, but it's great to still have stores like this in town. The OWS needs stores, and this is one. read more

Couched in a residential area full of families, this place is the picture of an American neighborhood grocer's. Knight's is, of course, run by the same old German family that runs the steakhouse (and the newish downtown restaurant) of the same name. They're very convenient for basic grocery needs, and not expensive as we have come to think of non-chain groceries. They carry lots of other locally produced food and local brands (such as Mighty Good coffee). And yes, they are mostly a meat market, so their meats are their specialty. I buy most of my meats here. They're the only place I can buy many of the organ meats I want, because they are more than happy to do special orders. (I know that sounds weird because organ meat isn't super popular in America, but let me tell you, if you've never had a beef heart pie, you're missing out.) read more

We've been buying our holiday meats at Knight's Market for almost 20 years, and have been very pleased in the past. That includes one year when we forgot to pick up our roast before closing on Christmas Eve and they were kind enough to let us pick it up Christmas Day. This year (2020), however, was different. The person who took our phone order quite insistently tried to talk us into getting a more expensive cut. We declined, and said we wanted a sirloin TIP roast, as that's what we've gotten in the past and we've been happy with it. The agent kept pushing us to spend more, but we declined. We also said we wanted 4 to 5 pound roast, but on lower end of that range. On Christmas Eve, we came to pick up our roast. Instead of the sirloin TIP roast we asked for, he had substituted a TOP sirloin roast at $22/lb. I don't believe there is any possibility we were misunderstood; it was made very clear on the call. It was also heavier than we asked for, at 5.36 pounds instead of closer to 4 as we requested. At that point, we had no choice but to take this $118 roast or go meatless for our Christmas dinner. Not surprisingly, the meat was great, but it was not what we ordered or wanted, and it seems clear this was an intentional substitution against our specific order. We've requested and gotten the sirloin tip cut for the past 15-20 Christmases but next year we'll look elsewhere. read more

The best place in town to get meat. It's not the cheapest, but it's always fresh and full of flavor. And I really like that I can get it cut any way I want. They also stock most of the small grocery items that I seem to need quickly. They also have some of the best ready-made packaged deli items so it's easy to throw together a quick meal. Knight's Market is my saving grace. It is so convenient - plenty of parking in their small lot. The owners are always friendly. I can get all the staples, plus they sell some of my local favorites - Mighty Good coffee, Guernsey Farms Dairy, Ann Arbor Tortilla Company chips, plus their own cookies and muffins which are always delicious, and of course the most fresh and varied selection of meats one could want. They will even carry your bags out for you!!! I recently was checking out, buying a pack of raspberries and I asked if they had any more in the back (because I only saw one pack in the cooler. Not only did they immediately grab more raspberries from their coolers, but they said i could keep the pack I was already going to purchase, plus another one of the same brand for free because they weren't as fresh as the other brand. The seriously gave me what would have been $9 worth of raspberries for free. They already had my complete loyalty, but after the gift of the raspberries, I knew I needed to get on Yelp and write my review. read more

Knight's Market is an Ann Arbor icon and the best place ANYWHERE in Ann Arbor to buy beef. The market has been in the Knight family for decades and these folks know how to purchase and butcher the best beef anywhere. Knight's steaks, though described as "choice" grade are infinitely more tender and tasty than any "prime" grade beef I've either eaten at the very expensive "Chop House" or that I've purchased at Hiller's Market and grilled myself. I don't know how they do it. The butchers are the most knowledgeable in the city and generous with help and advice on which cuts to purchase, how to cook them, and how much to buy for an occasion. Knight's Market is barely identifiable from the street and I circled it several times when I first moved to Ann Arbor 11 years ago, because there is no sign. The building is a non-descript white building with a small chess piece "knight" at the upper corner near the roof. That's all the warning you get. When you walk into the market, you don't know you are in beef heaven, because it looks like a small neighborhood convenience store with a refrigerator case on the right as you walk in the door in which the meat is kept. You can select your meat from the case and put it on small black styrofoam trays which you take to the register, where it is wrapped and priced. But don't stop there if you don't see the cut of beef that you want. Ask the clerk and they may just go back to the cooler and pull out and cut what you want. The ground chuck pre-made hamburgers are the best in Ann Arbor and come in bags of 4. If you want a standing rib roast or other specialty cut, be sure to call ahead and order it for you to pick up. They also sell other types of meat, usually chicken and pork, but this is not their forte. Knight's beef is the best around, and you have to pay more for that quality. This is NOT the stuff you find at Kroger's or Meijer or Busch's. Their beef is worth every penny and then some. I tend to make a trip every few weeks to a month to stock up. Enjoy! read more

We live in the neighborhood so this is super convenient for us. We mainly buy dinner rolls--the same ones served at the Knight's restaurant--and items we forgot from our regular grocery shopping or have run out of (milk, eggs, etc.) We also order a fresh turkey for Thanksgiving every year. I love having the shop in the neighborhood. There's a small parking lot so it's easy to stop by and run in after work. read more

Some of the best quality meats in town, and the prices are reasonable even for a semi-cheapskate like me. If I'm cooking a filet or Strip at home, I wouldn't go anywhere else. Also the ground beef is several cuts above the ground beef at a regular supermarket, and is $3 a pound.
