A guy broke the line on a large skate or ray at one point, at the end of the pier, so there's good stuff to be had. For bait he had been using a spot his son caught in the middle of the pier, so work that upselling magic here if you can. Service was generally good, but an employee yelled at me for parking in the handicapped spot, despite my handicapped placard, just because he didn't see my father walking with a cane on the other side of the vehicle. I even pointed to the placard when he first mentioned it, but he said it again. Maybe just look next time? Maybe I have a disability you can't see? Oh well. There are other fishing piers down here that I can go to next time I come down. Maybe the people there won't jump on me for not breaking the law.

Welcome to Duck Town Park and Boardwalk in lovely Duck, NC. It's a real family and entertainment destination with an amphitheater, picnic shelter, and playground. Without question, the boardwalk and piers are the centerpiece of the property, measuring over 4,000 feet long and ten feet wide. You can take some beautiful photos of the boardwalk hovering over the water or silhouetted against the sky. The scenery along the boardwalk is gorgeous with pretty views of the Sound, sand dunes, fallen trees, and seagrass. We saw plenty of people taking advantage of the beautiful weather and simply strolling along the boardwalk or ducking into stores, bars, and restaurants, or relaxing on one of the twenty-one benches. There's a small aquarium with fish you'd find swimming underneath the pier itself, too, which is air conditioned, and a snack shop and huge gift shop. If fishing is your jam, they'll hook you up with everything you need for a day of casting and catching. Say hey to the friendly pelicans, maybe toss them a spare fish if you've got it.

There are hardly any services here (which I guess is why it's free to enter). What makes this place so cool is that you walk from the parking lot for just a couple minutes and you feel like you're on the set of a movie (think of the desert in Star Wars or Dune). You then climb to the top of one of the dunes and you can see the ocean on one side and the sound on the other.

Whereas this one, has a bit more to it. With it being a public access point, it has a lot more parking available. There is some street parking, but if you are lucky, you will get one of the spots in the lot. There is a lot to offer here, more than just access to the beach. Right near the parking you will see two beach volleyball courts. Which is quite a nice addition. And this is even before you get to the beach. This is also where the public restrooms, public showers, and a nice new addition for donated beach toys (read that as left behind). Then there is the boardwalk up over the dune and you pour out onto the beaches. You don't have to use the boardwalk as you can use the footpaths on either side of the building. But, what I can tell you, wear your shoes, that sun heating up the walkways can be a bit of hinderance if you wanted to make a quick trip to your car and back.

Saw an ad for the CD boat trips in the OBX guide so decided to give the sunset cruise a try. Had…read moresome trouble with the online booking so called instead and signed up smoothly. It was a cloudy day with threat of rain but the cruise took off on time. There were about 30 passengers which was about one-third capacity so there's plenty of seating and space to move around on both upper and lower decks. Didn't see a lot of wildlife other than swarms of seabirds circling and chasing the shrimp boats with a fresh catch which was a fun sight. Finished a few minutes early so didn't really see the actual sunset as it looked like the rain was about to start - which it did as soon as we got off the boat so it was a good call on the part of the captain. They sell some simple snacks and drinks on the boat but you could also bring your own, although we didn't bother for this 1.5 hour trip. All in all a nice cruise - next time we might go for a fishing trip for a change.
