With all of the amazing restaurants in town, I find little time or even desire to cook at home, but I was lured by the idea of creating my own Moroccan masterpiece through the guidance of Kitchenware on the Square's Thursday night cooking class. They posted a tantalizing menu on a Facebook event that had me looking for a way to sign up. Unfortunately there was no way to register for the class online through their website. Matter of fact, the website didn't provide any information about the class. I called the store phone number during business hours several times, but no one answered. Finally I left a Facebook message, and someone eventually replied and asked me to email to sign up. I would highly recommend the store find a way to streamline this process. There are so many online ticketing companies out there that will allow people to sign up and prepay for the event. A customer should never have to work so hard to register. My persistence was due to the tasty and possibly tricky-to-make menu items posted. There was the promise of vegetable samosas with a cucumber sauce and chicken tagine. Unfortunately we didn't get to make the samosas. They had already wrapped the cooked vegetables in phyllo dough and baked them. We got to make the cucumber sauce that topped the samosa and eat the savory creation, but I was disappointed that we didn't get a chance to make this staple appetizer. Our class of eight each had their own cooking station with a cutting board, knife, spatula, ramekins, pre-measured ingredients, cooktop, etc. Aprons were provided so that we would go home with food in our belly as opposed to on it. This was a hands on class where we were able to cut, chop, mix and stir. We were also offered a glass of merlot and a hot toddy to savor during the class. Sadly there was no tagine pot. This was another letdown. I had really hoped we would learn to cook with a tagine. They had one on display. Apparently the owner had ordered them, but they didn't arrive in time. Despite this, the final result was delicious. I devoured every last morsel of my chicken curry poured over rice with a side of wheat pita bread. Dessert was a light, healthy mix of orange slices and dates. The best parts of the class were: 1) Having our own work stations where we could get our hands dirty 2) Being able to drink wine during the evening 3) Asking questions of our chefs who gave us several tidbits we could use to entertain our friends and family later 4) Eating our masterpiece at the conclusion of the class without having to do the cleanup! Would I take another class here? Maybe, but unlikely. The price was steep ($69) per person. For people who already have a little bit of know-how in the kitchen, this class would have been a snoozer, but for those foraging into this area for the first time, the hand holding through the class is definitely a way to build ones cooking confidence. read more

WARNING AVOID! Unless you want to be scammed, over charged then hassled when asking about it. It was a terriable experience, the man who owns the business charged me twice for an item and went absolutely crazy when I said something about it. He claimed he cut me a deal on another item, when in fact he also charged me a dollar more than the regular price. Very unprofessional and justified it by saying he has had hard times. Great experience!!! Went in looking for a specific item and color. All they had left was the display and without hesitation was offered the item. Plus was given an added discount. Could have gone to a big box store, but wouldn't have received the stellar customer service. read more

FINALLY FOUND THE UNICORN OF KITCHEN STORES!!! Just happened to stumble upon this charming little kitchen store last weekend, after meeting with friends for lunch on the Square in downtown McKinney. The store was clean, the staff was knowledgeable, friendly and helpful. I was greeted right away and all my questions answered. I couldn't believe the cool gadgets and gizmos they had! It had to be the latest and greatest because some of the things I had never seen before, which doesn't happen too often. I am a huge foodie and collector of anything and everything kitchen related. This store is honestly my new favorite. Now bumping Williams-Sonoma to second (WS you will always have a special place in heart as only a first love would). Kitchenwares carries a lot of the exact same products as WS, but at a more reasonable cost. Same quality better price. YAY!!! Not only do they have the best stuff ever!! They also offer cooking classes. Can't say I know enough about them (live an hour away) to give a true review. This will not be the case much longer, because I just signed the hubby and I up for their Mexican food class on March 10th, super excited!! It is BYOB/BYOW (wine). I believe it was Kim, (not 100% sure thats her name, sorry) who helped me get registered for the class did say all upcoming classes was posted on their Facebook page with dates, times, menus and themes. So I'm pretty sure you can register for them online as well? I'll be sure to post a review soon after my experience. Seriously y'all need to check this store out if your ever in or around McKinney. The only recommendation I would give is to request they open a second store closer to south Dallas so I wouldn't have to drive so far. Just throwing that out there......wink, wink. read more

So, this may be my favorite non-restaurant on the Square. There are lots of little antique shops and boutiques, and that's all nice, but truly THIS store is what gets me. There are so many fun kitchen gadgets and awesome cookware. As I walked through I kept thinking, "I've got to bring so-and-so here on their birthday." Anyone you know that likes to cook would love this spot. They have a whole section of cookie cutout things in fun shapes, they've got great pots and pans, they have lots of great tea and coffee gadgets, etc. I can't even describe it, I'll just have to take some photos when I go in next time. My wife and I went in this store last month and were amazed at the variety of product.We found an item we were looking for but in all good conscious I could not bring myself to purchase. We went on a cool Saturday downtown wasn't swamped, no one in store but woman at counter my wife and I. We were not greeted, we were walked the entire store and were not acknowledged. Rudeness does not deserve reward. We left without a purchase, I guess the solitaire game was more important. read more

Great atmosphere and knowledgeable staff. I love that it is locally owned! When I first went there I went for 2 things I was really needing, but I left with much more stuff. Wowzers, I could have spent all day in here! If you're a Le Creuset fan, this place had everything for you! Into baking? Tools galore. Barbecue? Tons of gadgets. Drinks? Tea? Wine? Never been here and not been incredibly impressed. Locals own it and run it. I wouldn't have I any other way. I went to spend some money there for things I needed. Instead, I got everything I set out for(plus more) and spent way less than I thought I would. What a deal. Go here!!!!!! read more

A huge THANK YOU to Karen and her team at Kitchenware on the Square for helping me pull off a big birthday surprise!! Despite my error in starting the process to buy a giant Big Green Egg entirely too late - Karen and her team went out of their way to help me. There was no detail missed and she even came up with a few ideas that I never would have thought of. She did everything in her power to ship the Big Green Egg from Texas to Washington and get it here in time. When it became clear that it wasn't going to make it in time (to no fault of the store) the owner put together a darling box with a Big Green Egg accessory and some other little goodies in it so the birthday boy would have something to open on his special day. I could have easily chosen to make this purchase in WA but I specifically chose to go through Kitchenware on the Square because of my previous awesome transactions there. Every transaction here has been handled with heart and professionalism. Her selection is amazing and if she doesn't have something in stock she can sure get it for you quickly. If you are purchasing in store the service is so so. If they offer to send your merchandise walk out. It has been over one month since they said they had shipped the item I had purchased. I am still waiting for the item. I have called, left messages, and even had a relative go by ad talk with the owner several times. I still have not received the items I paid for. NOT HAPPY!!! The owner says their official opening is the weekend of Ocktoberfest (Sept 23/24th) but she's got her colorful, enormous wire whisk outside the door, and she's more than happy to sell you what she presently has on display. Its basically a "toy store" for adutls...she has EVERYTHING and it high quality. Things you've been searching for, and and things you didn't even know you needed (kitche goggles for cutting onions??)! Full line of Le Creuset and other great bakeware. I'll admit it...I was so excited the self-control I usually am able to maintain in these places melted and I walked away with three items from my 'list': a garlic press that actually is easy to clean (chef''n), a honeypot (Le Creuset), and quality kitchen mitts (KitchenGrips). She has a full line of SodaStream products, as well as yogurt and ice cream makers. I'm going to have to watch myself when I walk down Kentucky anymore... read more

I have to agree with Steve P. The owner is not very customer friendly. Just yesterday My sister & I both bought $41 worth of items there each. My mom & niece each spent $10. So in total, just over $100. They were all here from out of town visiting me. The owner had an offer going that if you spent $50, you got a coupon for $10 off your next purchase. The owner would not combine our purchases together so that I could get the $10 coupon. Very short sighted on her part. My friends & I get a lot of visitors from out of town & we always bring them to DT McKinney to shop & eat. Sadly we won't be including her shop In our future visits. When you're a small business owner of an independent shop like that you can't treat customers that way. read more

My wife and I love this store! I purchase my knives here and we love going to the cooking classes. Karen and Windy are always willing to help and take the time to visit with us each time we go in. I priced knives online and found their prices to be the same or even less a couple of times. If you have never attended one of their cooking classes you need to! They are smaller and very informal making everyone feel comfortable. Great selection, we highly recommend. read more

On my first visit the store was not officially open but the owner let me in to look around. I knew I was going to be in trouble... they have any thing you would ever need for the kitchen or the grill. I finally went back today and just as I thought I am going to have a lot of fun shopping here.
