It had been many years since my last visit to Kitchen Conservatory, we had gone to the previous location and had an average time but after a decade or so I decided it was time to try again. Wrong. There were two simultaneous pasta classes going. Our group seemed to have no clear direction. There were two pasta rollers and each kept malfunctioning with the handles falling off. It was at this point one couple left. It only went downhill from there. My sister kept saying we should just leave but I wanted to learn how to make pasta! And I paid a lot for this class so i was going to learn! But I did not. The revolt began and people just began cooking on their own (which in the end turned out quite well!!) just so we could eat at some point. We could hear the other class drinking wine and sitting down to eat, and our lasagna wasn't even in the oven yet. Another ominous sign. Our chef was very kind but it was clear he was not ready for this. It was my second and last visit to the KC, I walked away with no additional skills. The class wasn't exactly a cooking class but the chef gave us recipes and further demonstration when questions came up. Every dish was delicious. My wife and I have done a number of classes at Kitchen Conservatory. All of them follow the same general pattern. The class will have a handful of different courses, and participants are each assigned to prep one dish. At the end of the night the dishes are all pulled together and everyone eats a meal together. We have taken pizza throwing, a couple pasta making, a Great British Bake Off, and a "Low Country" seafood class. We have enjoyed all of them. A couple things to note. The quality of the classes can be hit or miss based upon the person organizing. Some have been absolutely fantastic, and others are just okay. No matter what I've still enjoyed myself. The classes are expensive, there is no way around that. However, for all of the classes you end up with a good meal and then some alcoholic beverage (mixed drinks or wine). So I view the $120-$160 per couple cost as the equivalent of a nice dinner, along with some entertainment and a fun activity. Some additional notes. The new facility on Manchester is just beautiful. It is a huge step up from the spot in Clayton. They also have a great selection of high end cooking/baking accessories that I highly recommend. My family decided to have a girls night here and attend a cooking demonstration. The new location is beautiful with a great parking lot. The demonstration was alright. The chefs were friendly but not very theatrical or completely organized. Both were knowledgeable about food and very receptive to questions. The food was all good as well. It was a 6:30-9 class and we didn't begin eating until 8. I was starving and was hoping they would serve the chips and queso or margarita a little earlier but I understand that cooking everything fresh in front of us is not fast. If you come to a class, expect to not eat until the very end of the class. I think this would be a really fun date night and I would consider coming back. Took a cooking class here with my mom for my birthday. We did a pasta class and it was mostly good! On the pro side, the food was delicious and we got to take home the recipes. Plus the class came with a glass of wine! On the downside it did take a while and while I understand making 3 dishes can take a bit I wish the instructor had provided more direction in a more linear manner. There was a lot of confusion in who was doing what when and also not a lot of explaining for how to do what or even when. The hands on classes have been a perfect way to learn a new skill and learn from great chefs! Tried: Doughnut class with Rachael from Nathaniel Reid Bakery, Kolache class with Chef Sheri, and Gnocchi class with Chef Jeff Loved: we enjoyed all three but really appreciated Sheri's teaching style - we learned so many tips and tricks for every day in the kitchen in addition to kolache skills. Our favorite food we've had has been in our gnocchi class - such great dishes our class created. We've loved the selection of classes they offer as well . Omgggggggg! This experience was amazing! My friend invited me with her to take an Indian cuisine cooking class and I honestly enjoyed everything about the process. According to her, the booking process was easy to understand and maneuver. I'm not sure how much it costs, but the prices were on the website based on which class you take. When the day of the class came, parking was easy to find and there were enough spots for us, especially because we made it roughly 2 minutes late. We walked in and received a folder full of information on what we were cooking for the day and the recipes for them. We were directed to the class where there were roughly 20-25 people. We were instructed on how to make the different components of the meal, and were split in pairs of your choice. It was nice to talk to the different attendees and even the instructor, along with her mother. Susie, who worked for Kitchen Conservatory, kept all of the dishes cleaned and helped us find anything we needed. It was a really neat experience. We made so much food and had so much left over. We weren't allowed to take any to go, but you could definitely eat until your tummy was full. I would say, just to make sure people were able to get a full experience of every component, I feel as though the class would work better if it was 10-12 students instead. It became a bit crowded and many people were kind of standing off to the side waiting for something to do. However, I enjoyed my experience and would definitely come back! read more

I feel like the new location deserves a new review. The new location is BEAUTIFUL. I do think a lot of the classes remain the same. For example, the paella class that we took, I believe they have been doing that for a long time. If you are even considering taking a cooking class at all, jump on their website or get on their mailing list and they will definitely keep you updated on the new classes. They have everything from date night classes to demonstration classes where you just get to sit and watch, then eat! Everyone that attends is always super nice and we make new friends every time we go. If I could plan to do this every month, I would in a heartbeat. In this class we did learn how to make paella and we took the class because we thought it would be hardyo make! The chef made it out to be super easy! And there is a lot that one can prep the day before if you wanted/needed to. We are headed to Spain soon and I will be collecting ideas so we can make it at home. We loved our dinner with Chef Jeff! We had a girls night and appreciated the relaxing environment of kitchen conservatory, we were able to watch Jeff make a delicious meal and still had time to chat with each other. I appreciated having the food dispersed and not everything at once. We had that at a previous class and were ravenous. The only change I would make is the volume of food, of the demonstrations I've done this is the least food I've had, not anything drastic but get like it was missing an item like a salad or a side. read more

Since our original visit, we've done 2 more themed classes- one for Schitt's Creek and another for Ted Lasso. It was the same instructor for both, and she was lovely. The classes were so fun, and I loved the group cooking atmosphere. They've moved to their new location, which is a huge step up. What a fun night. Three of us decided that we'd like to do a pasta making class. This was our first time at the kitchen Conservatory. We arrived about 15 minutes early to be able to look around the store a little bit and get ourselves situated in the class. Chef Angela was amazing. There were roughly 16 people in our class and she had all of us making pasta, chopping, cooking, and moving seamlessly. We made our pasta ball into four different types of pasta and created four different pasta sauces. It was a lot of fun. At the end, they served us water, tea, and a glass of wine as we got to sit down together and enjoy our meal that we created. This is definitely an entertaining evening that was very hands-on. I received this as a birthday gift from my daughter. Another family had said that it was a Christmas gift for their mother. This is a wonderful gift idea for someone that you don't know what to purchase for them. A great date idea as well. We will definitely be back. They also had a punchcard that they gave us. I believe for every 12 classes you get one free. I am thinking that our class was $65 but for the $65 we learned how to create four amazing meals, had a glass of wine, a wonderful meal and met some new friends so it was definitely a good deal. read more

We gifted our parents a class here for Christmas so we could experience something together as a family. They offer both hands-on interactive and demo class options. We chose the Tuscany for Two class where we made made a shrimp and scallop appetizer, rib-eye steak, baked polenta, mixed roasted veggies and blackberry gelato with Pizzelle cookies. Everyone gets printed recipes before class along with a an apron. Chef T did an amazing job walking us through each dish and helped everyone tackle different aspects of the dinner such as chopping veggies, stirring the polenta, and cooking the protein. Chef T also gave us lots of great kitchen tips like using a silicon cannoli tube to remove the outside of garlic cloves. I highly recommend this class! read more

Attended a class as a team building event and this was my first time at the Kitchen Conservatory. There is a shop with SO many items to browse through, I mean you can find any kitchen gadget here as well as cookware, bakeware and even grilling supplies! Our class was a Tuscan style menu and everyone participated in the creation of our meal. Shrimp and scallop scampi, pan seared ribeye, roasted veggies, baked polenta and a blackberry gelato! Chef Jeff was amazing as he instructed our group to make each element of our meal. He was information and funny too! This was a great event that I was happy to attend and was able to learn some new kitchen skills. Hope to attend another class as they have many offerings. My colleague and I attended a Whack the Knife class at Kitchen Conservatory and had a wonderful time! Our instructor Ann was extremely knowledgeable and taught us all about different types of knives, how to use kitchen knives safely, and how to sharpen them properly. Each participant could bring in up to 3 knives to be sharpened for free by a lovely man named Tom. He was also very engaging and told us all about the knife sharpening process and how to maintain sharp knives! During our class, we prepared roast chicken panzanella salad. Throughout the course of the food preparation process, we learned what makes a good knife, the essential kitchen knives and their names/uses, knife maintenance do's & don'ts, techniques for boning & carving chicken, and techniques for efficiently and safely chopping veggies. We each got to come to the front of the class and help with a different task to help prepare our food. At the end of the class, we shared our completed chicken panzanella and were treated to a delicious devil's food cake made by Ann. The class was definitely worth the $50 class registration fee!! I learned so many helpful knife skills, walked away with freshly sharpened knives, and enjoyed a delicious lunch. I highly recommend taking a class at Kitchen Conservatory! read more

Event: Tuscany for Two It was different. It wasn't as hands on as the other class I took years ago. It wasn't fun and wasn't worth the money. Instead of learning how to make all things, us and two others were pushed to make the dessert (the gelato machine stopped working) , while not learning about the steak, scallops, and veggies. It was actually a disappointing experience. The steak wasn't seasoned, scallops were burnt, veggies soggy, and gelato was soupy. If we were allowed to prepare our own meals under the direction of the chef vs, the chef having to run around to different stations, I think everyone and the food would've faired better. Last time, each pair had enough to season/prepare our own portions and then we all learned how to cook our individually prepared meals in a group setting. The company/other guests were great! And we all had like opinions. Not worth the $85 or you should just go to a fine restaurant and get the taste you're expecting/paying for. I was also expecting like a survey or something so we could provide quiet feedback. Everyone was nice and kind but just needed a little bit elevated customer experience. read more

We were at a gala a few months ago and won a gift card to Kitchen Conservatory. My son went to a soup making class and loved it. For Christmas he booked a pizza making class for the two of us, which we went to last night. This event was at their new place which just opened in January! The building was beautiful and very clean. I got a good vibe when I walked in. Upon entering the classroom there was a table set for 14. After washing hands we could pour either ice tea or water then take a seat. In front of us were the menus of what we were making that we could then take home to make on our own, We made a buffalo chicken pizza, a think wheat crust spinach and mushroom pizza a stuffed crust cheese pizza, a taco pizza (with a goldfish cheese crust yum) and a dessert pizza with nutella, strawberries, and almonds. Each pizza was excellent! We also put together a salad which we ate while our pizza's cooked and we were given a choice of red or white wine! That all being said, it was excellent, so I would give it a 4.5. What I did not love is that we all were making parts of different pizzas, so my son and I did a lot of dicing of vegetables, so we did not really feel we were making the pizzas. My other negative was in terms of the safety/health measures. Most all the women wore their hair up, minus one, as it was not ever mentioned. We were told to wash our hands when we entered and after we ate our salads. I mean one hopes its common sense every time you touch your face, or your phones, (which we all left on the main table) you would clean your hands. Our chef never said anything about that, or reminding everyone to please be considerate when making food! I washed my hands so much they are super dry today, but I can say for sure I dont think everyone was washing their hands as much as they should have! A PSA at the beginning and middle of the class would have been appreciated. So honestly I wouild give it a 3.5 but the food and the experience were great so I'm happy with a solid 4. read more

We came here because we got a gift card. We did the Mediterranean mezze class. Everyone took on different parts of the meal. The stuff we cooked was delicious other than one item that didn't turn out well. I'm giving 3 stars because I feel like our instructor was underprepared. He was running around trying to help everyone at once so no one really got the one on one cooking help that they needed. As we started cooking the instructor also kept apologizing for not having all of the ingredients so we just omitted some or used other ingredients. I felt like the experience would be better if there was less people ( there was about 12 of us) or a second instructor. They did give us packets with all the recipes though to take home after. Rotten ingredients, no structure to the course, the recipes were incomplete and simply incorrect, and the program was so misleading! A different chef than the one on the program taught the class, and although he allegedly cooked in many restaurants, he clearly has zero teaching experience. The program said we'd learn to make multiple dishes. Instead, they threw ingredients at us, made us SHARE cutting boards (it's not that hard to get a headcount of who is attending seeing as you have to sign up first and provide ample tools!) with other people, and didn't show us how to do a darn thing. I took someone with little cooking experience to learn how to cook multiple dishes. We learned one. Barely. Some people only got to make the dessert! Honestly, if I was them, I'd ask for my money back. All we did was follow a recipe. Zero teaching was involved here. One star for the fact that at least half of the meal was decent. Honestly, I'll stick to cooking with YouTube tutorials at home. read more

Such a fun experience! In the past 6 months I've done a cookie decorating class and a cake decorating class with the owner of The Cup. In both classes I have learned so much, from special techniques to different ways of treating baked goods (such as wrapping cakes in plastic and freezing). Both instructions were super helpful and friendly. Love the 10% coupon the shop includes for day-of purchases. I also appreciate the ice tea and water station located by the class area. My fiancée and I recently took a cooking class here, and we had a blast! We took "Pasta in Every Way, Shape, and Form" with Nathan Hatch, chef at Trattoria Marcella, and now we're basically pasta pros (kidding, but we're getting there.) I wasn't really sure what to expect since every cooking class I've been to has been so very different from one another, but we had a ton of fun. Get there early so you can secure your seat next to your +1... the classes are small, so you'll get to know the people around you. We were welcomed warmly, aproned up, and were ready to learn. Chef was great and did an excellent job leading, and the Kitchen Conservatory team was great as well. It was a bit disorganized at times and we couldn't always find what we were looking for. Something to note: this isn't a step by step situation. Everyone was divided up into different "jobs", and there was a lot going on at all times. It was definitely more collaborative than I was expecting, but that's not a bad thing. Look, I'm used to drinking a lot of wine during cooking classes, but be prepared that the wine won't be broken out until you're eating the meal. It's fine and probably more civilized, but again, something to note. I'm sure you could open it earlier but then you're that person drinking by yourself. We made three pastas, learned a ton of techniques, and everything tasted SO GOOD. We ended up buying the damn pasta maker and every accessory we needed, so what started as a decently affordable class turned high dollar. It was worth it! We'd do this again for sure. read more

We had a work event here and the staff handled a lot of people well, and kept their cool when people were very demanding. The chefs smiled through it all, everything was kept clean and the back up staff (probably not the correct term) were great keeping kitchens stocked and dishes clean and ready to go. My husband and I decided to go to the the Kitchen Conservatory for our wedding anniversary to try something a little different. I am by no means domestic... I know how to do some basics - but I don't know how to do the more complex things... in example, we decided to do the class on lobster bisque and beef tenderloin and pancetta and panko green beans - bisque and pistachio ice cream, too - AND a bourbon mint cocktail. We met several other really nice couples that made it a more enjoyable experience. We had an instructor who walked around and helped everyone understand how to mix or cook the item they were making. We learned, also, how to make super easy skillet bread to dip in the bisque. The dinner was amazing. The food was literally amazing and I learned so much about mixing and measuring and the roles of different ingredients. In addition, I learned the different types of kitchen tools needed for different types of ingredients and why they are important. We really had a wonderful time and the $150 price tag was by far worth it - buying this meal at any restaurant would have been this price before a tip or cocktails regardless - and this way, you're learning something! But somehow bought 5 due to the terrible website they have. I called them the day of realizing the mistake and they offered no refund or credit. They told me I should come. Well I am awaiting a Covid test currently. So don't want to give anyone Covid. Terrible way to run a business. I realize I should have seen the money come out of my account. For Christmas, I opted to give mom an experience instead of junk. Search their calendar of events on their website to find your next date night, girls night, or family night. Make sure you filter by classes with openings, or you'll find yourself with a serious case of FOMO. You can choose a class thats hands-on or a demo. We opted for a hands-on class with the Chinese New Year theme. The chef had recipes printed out for each dish for each member of the class to take home (12 people allowed in our class). We each were given an apron and name tag and then proceeded to the kitchen counters. Each station had a recipe in front of it. Instead of each person making each recipe, we divided and conquered. In our class, we were making lots of items that needed chopping, a few items that needed marinating, a few items that needed dipping sauces, and a few items that needed some hands-on assembly. When you and your partner finished one task, there was another task you could work on. I do wish that it was more clear who would do what task. It seemed that when we finished one thing, we would have to ask multiple people multiple times what still needed to get done. We found our rhythm by the end of the class, but it was very frustrating when we started. At the end of the night, we all ate together the meal we had prepared together: Mu Shu pork (lots of chopping) with handmade pancakes (lots of rolling out the sticky dough), steamed Shu Mai with handmade filling and sauce assembled by everyone, Chinese pork buns assembled by the group, Pork Fried Rice (lots of chopping), and Ginger Ice Cream. We also shared a cocktail at the end of the evening. Overall, what a great location to host many cooking classes. There are several more classes that I want to sign up for now that I know what to expect. This really was a great gift to share with mom- experiences over things, always! read more

We signed up for "When I'm Not a Crab, I'm a Sole Man" and had the best time! We initially assumed that each couple would have the opportunity to create the many dishes listed. Instead, each couple was assigned a dish and we all enjoyed a buffet-style meal of our creations afterward. I was hoping to try my hands at a bit more cooking, but this allowed me to walk around, take photos, and also check out the shop. Chef Jon Lowe was easy to follow and answered any questions we had (whether it was about today's class or a random question you have regarding a cooking technique or ingredients). Buyer beware. A family emergency came up the day of a cooking class so we thought perhaps we could move to another class but because we were within 24 hours of the class, they were not flexible. I didn't even ask for a refund nor was I looking for one so the choice was to find another group of 4 people, last minute, or lose the money. They compared tickets to the dinner cooking class to tickets at The Fox Theater. Nice try but absolutely incorrect. Bad business decisions by a greedy owner equals this post. We love to spend money at local businesses but take this one off the list. If she's too good to work with a good paying customer then she shouldn't get your money after this incident. read more

I called to cancel my reservation for a cooking class at this establishment. My mother in law is actively dying in the ICU at a hospital. It was not expected. Ann Koury (???) and the manager named Melissa would not grant a credit because it was not within the 24 hour time period and was defined as discourteous to the instructors for the class. Extenuating circumstances and situations not in direct control of a customer should be approached with sensitivity and understanding. The dying and death process is garnered as such. I also offered to obtain documentation from the hospital regarding the grave situation and was questioned as to how many times I have done this in my career as a former administrator, that being, providing documentation to a family member in order to answer question for another entity within HIPPA guidelines. We had a great night in Lidia's Dunder Mifflin 'The Office' Class. Not only was she a fabulous teacher (her asst. was amazing as well) of the delicious recipes set for the class, but, she shared a multitude of kitchen tips. I like to say that I am a good cook, and I have been cooking for a very long time, but she had some pointers that I can't believe I never knew before, and, I am so grateful to have in my arsenal now! Thank you Lidia! You really need to put a list together of "Lidia's Indispensable Tips for the Kitchen." My friend Michele gave me a gift certificate to the Kitchen Conservatory for my birthday. It was an awesome gift. We took the class together in their new gorgeous space and really enjoyed it. It would be fun to do it with a group of friends. One of the best parts of the evening is that you don't have to do any dishes!! So many of the classes offered are appealing to me, it isn't easy to choose. One of the WORST "cooking class" I've ever experienced. Prepare to leave starving and with no new knowledge of cooking. My "girls night out" class was from 6:30-9pm. We did not receive a taste of any food until well past 8:20pm. Also, no alcohol allowed. Everyone's stomach was growling by this time. EXTREMELY UNENJOYABLE. I had to leave 30 minutes early due to a family conflict, and was told my friends were not allowed take my food home to me because of "insurance reasons." Who has ever heard of an establishment based around food that doesn't let someone take said food outside of the building??! Extremely rude customer service also. I was a bit taken aback by the fact that 14 people were all cooking the same meal, rather than cooking their own meals like I have had the experience of doing at other cooking classes. My whole job was to cut some vegetables and I didn't really see/learn what other people were doing. Plus the fact that everyone's hands were on everything grossed me out. The man next to me literally was wiping his hand with snot while he laid out the lettuce, and no one was required to pull their hair back when cooking. I recently attended a Girl's Night Out demonstration class with Mediterranean cuisine. While the food tasted delicious, the experience was awful. The class started at 6:30pm and we were not served anything to eat or drink until 8:10pm. My friend had to leave early for a medical reason and they did not allow us to take her dinner to-go, which was served at 8:50pm. She paid $60 for a plate of hummus, carrots and pita chips. I was so looking forward to a fun night out and was disappointed with the experience. Unfortunately, I won't be returning anytime soon or recommending to others. The instructor (turns out, she's the business owner) was humorless, aggravated, and short throughout the day, snapping when we did something wrong. She called me by the wrong name all day, even after reminders. She didn't wear a mask. Her employees sometimes wore masks, but mostly had them pulled down around their chins. The person working the register several feet away from the kitchen area was coughing into his hand then coming over and picking through the treats we baked, touching and then leaving the items he touched on the tray. I started to suspect I was in a COVID denial zone, and after I got snapped at for "breaking the butter seal" on some dough, I noped out of there half an hour early. The experience was not worth the hefty price tag (it was mostly rolling pre-made dough into different pastries and then eating them) and not worth the COVID risk. I intended to leave this review anyway because of the extremely blah experience, and share that I had decided I wouldn't be returning to this business. Then I learned more about the owner and decided to take the extra step to donate the price of the class to NARAL. Excellent cooking classes. The chefs provide recipes and many cooking techniques. Each class one can leave with some take away info.

We booked a private cooking class with my entire family! It was a great experience, we made pasta and sides, and a dessert. Everyone had sooo much fun and the recipes were fun to make land were delicious. read more
