I've had a Pampered Chef knife block and knife set for 13+ years. I lost their sharpening tool probably 8 years or so ago and haven't kept up with sharpening the knives even though they were nice when I got them. The result has been frustration with basic cutting when cooking. Hubby researched knife sharpening in the area and found Barterelli. We called and they advised we could drop the knives off that day and they would be able to get to them. They sharpened our entire set (10 knives and a kitchen scissor) the same day and called us for pickup. While there the owner answered quite a few of our questions about how to maintain the sharpness, when to sharpen again, etc. Trust me I ask lots of questions lol. He was very patient and educational. When we returned home, Hubby had to try out the knives right away. He has been RAVING ever since about why we waited so long to do this. The cost was very reasonable for the final effect and now everyday ease of using our knives. We will be back much sooner than 8 yrs to sharpen these again! The store itself has many quality items. They do assist a lot of restaurants etc so you will see items for sale here that aren't necessarily something you would need in your home kitchen. That said, you can buy your next knife set and block here and some smaller kitchen accessories. They have BEAUTIFUL handmade wooden cutting boards here with the materials to take care of them as well. THIS PLACE IS A ZERO FOR KNIFE SHARPENING... I would give this place a zero but you can't do that on Yelp. My 3 Henckels 4 Star knives are ruined! My knives are as follows: 8" chefs knife, 9" flex slicing knife, and a 4" paring knife. These knives have served me phenomenally since they were purchased in Germany back in 1989. They have only been sharpened by myself using a Henckels 2stage pull through sharpener. But after 30 years of regular use there were some slight chips in the blades and they could use a professional sharpening. Returned from this business I notice right away after less than 30 min of cutting and chopping the knives needed a touch up on the pull through sharpener. Before I took these into get "sharpened" even after 30 years I would use the sharpener approximately twice a month. I knew something was not correct. Then I pulled my wife's 4 star that we purchased 4 years ago... The issue, the angle placed by the guys doing the sharpening. The angle from the factory is 15 degrees not the unknown angle placed on all my knives by this company. They are professionals and should know the difference. I'm sure these are not the first Henckels brought into the shop, they should already KNOW what I found out with a cursory Google search. The takeaway: STAY AWAY from these idiots who sharpen knives to a spec that I can only surmise is to keep you coming back for a sharpening. Now I have to find real professionals who can maybe restore my knives. Or I guess I'll spend another $350+ to replace my beloved knives. read more

I dropped off my knife and wait for them to sharpen my knife as I browsed the store. The front of the store isn't huge, but has a decent selection of kitchen gadgets and a big selection of knives. They sell a variety of knives, from the $300+ sushi knives to the less than $100 chef knives. When I was there waiting, I saw that there were quite a few (what I thought were) chefs that got there knives sharpened there. Well... I assumed that they were chef's because they had a knife carrying case. My knife was sharpened in about 15 minutes and only cost me $5! Definitely a happy customer. Yesss, we found our knife sharpening heaven! A weird thing to say, I know, but when we lived in Chicago, we had a great knife sharpening and kitchen supply shop. Luckily, while wandering around The Hill yesterday, Justin and I stumbled upon Bertarelli Cutlery and promptly spent at least a half hour just hangin' out in our new go-to spot for knife service. While we didn't have any knives to sharpen on hand, we found plenty of other things to check out in the store--a nice collection of Forschner, Wusthof and Shun knives, magnetic strips to hold them, cutting boards galore and tons of un-knife-related items. I, of course, ogled the vast array of cake decorating icing tips and spatulas, baking sheets, pans and rolling pins. Justin drooled over the Boos hard maple cutting board and chatted up one of the friendly store employees to see if he could special order a big ol' butcher block someday (yes, he could). Bertarelli's also offers pieces from All-Clad, Lodge Cast Iron (most used pan in our house) and Le Creuset. Need a certain sized ice cream scooper? They've got it. Looking for a way to grind your own whole wheat? No problem. On the hunt for a pasta maker? Look no further. Need your knives sharpened? I first ventured into Bertarelli's store on a wander through The Hill one Saturday. I was looking for authentic Italian bakeries and was disappointed with my findings. Bertarelli's, however, was a F-I-N-D. They have a lovely assortment of professional-grade knives, cookware and tools. Most recently, I had all my knives sharpened by them. I was thoroughly satisfied with the results, and the price was excellent (about $1/knife). My serrated bread knife had not been sharpened EVER. To wit: I normally slice bagels and English muffins holding the latter in my palm and slicing toward my palm. Now, I realize this is not a good idea and not sanctioned by any knife maker, but it's never been a problem. Now, my bread knife could cut through a finger. Kudos Bertarelli. I dropped by without an appointment, left three knives with them, and came back an hour later to pick them up. They placed them in cardboard protection sleeves and I was good to go. This is a cool shop, lots of nice kitchen wares. But the real reason to go here is to have your knives sharpened. They do a great job, and pretty fast. I brought in 11 knives and they were done in less than 90 minutes. Also, the prices go down the more knives you have sharpened, $3/blade over ten, so that's a good reason to have all the knives in your drawer taken care of. A good sharp knife is much safer than a dull knife (the pressure you use with a dull knife means you're more likely to hurt yourself). Take care of your steel people! read more

Great local place to buy knives and other industry equipment. I've only been once, and I don't want to give a locally owned business a 1-star review. However I will never take my knives back to be sharpened. I recently went for their Stanley Cup promotion thought it was an opportunity to try their services at a low risk cost. Thank goodness I didn't pay full price, although I almost did until I spoke up about the promotion and their reply was "you didn't say it" which is a shady way to do business. I broke my knives out when I got home a day later and was shocked at the poor quality. A big notch in my bolster, lots of scruffs half way up all 4 knives, and burs that even I a novice notice, with lots of metal removed. My santuko is completely round, there is no straight edge towards the heel. And I checked around to see if this was an isolated incident, so I checked in with trusted sources to see if this was a "fluke" but apparently they used to do a decent job, but now their quality has dropped dramatically. If you care about your knives at all do not have them sharpened here. Even at $5ish per knife you're way better off buying an electronic knife sharpener. read more

I brought a very nice $550 Rob Simonich knife in to be sharpened and when I got it back they had buffed off most of the bead blasting and put a giant silly 1/4 inch edge on the blade. If I had known they would intentionally destroy my knife or if they had explained that they had no knowledge of knife sharpening I wouldn't have entrusted my knife to them. When I brought this damage to the attention of the owner he just stared at my knife and said, " I tell these guys not to do that ." After bringing her knives here for over 20 years, the manager was rude with my chef friend, when she brought in my antique tailor's shears and Wiss kitchen shears. Then when we picked them up, they would not cut through fabric, there are gouges in the blades, the nut ring on the tailor shears was twisted completely out of shape, and the blades of both pairs were bent. They were both worse than when I took them in. When I came back in to talk to someone about it, the same guy, who said he was the manager, was still extremely rude and combative. After taking our money for a piss poor job, and completely destroying my shears, with no comment, upon confrontation, all he did was talk down to us and gaslight me, saying they were garbage to begin with, and saying they could not tighten them....he insinuated that I was just stupid, and his only concession was to give me my money back. And that was it. Not good enough for completely destroying my equipment. What happened to the satisfaction guarantee? We never got a call about there being a problem. They also refused to resurface a cutting board, and would not sharpen pinking shears. Maybe it's just me, but if a company advertises something, they should do that. The way this man treated us, and my equipment, is absolutely unprofessional and unforgivable. read more

I thought that all they did was sell and sharpen knives, but that couldn't be further from the truth. They carry all sorts of cooking items, from spatulas to pots. All of the big name brands are here, and the selection is nice. My sister will only get her knives sharpened here, and she is really particular.
