I stumbled upon Kippered while taking a walk around DTLA this past Sunday evening and was I glad that I found this spot to chill. Ambiance here is very chill, relaxing vibes, dimmed lights, and cute tables with seating indoor/outdoor. Bar seating availability as well. The bartender was super sweet and attentive towards me the whole time I was there alone. This place serves unique delicatessen bites. They specialize in "tinned fish" and various wine selections as well as beer on tap. I did not get to try out the tinned fish this time around but I went with the French onion dip and chips--so good when you are hungry! I enjoyed the French onion dip because it was so rich and tasty. The bartender suggested a red wine, called "Bruno zanasi (ita) charmat a Lambrusco red wine. So subtly sweet yet flavorful that I ended up ordering another glass. 5/5 I also ordered their baguette with butter that was warmed up nicely when it arrived at my table and I devoured the entire bread. So yeah, it was delightfully good. 5/5 They also have unique wallpapers in their restrooms which attracted me to read what people have written on behalf of the dogs included in the wallpaper (you must see it in person to know what im talking about) fun and funny words!! Such a cozy place to come and chill, enjoy bites and relax with some amazing wine. I really enjoyed my time here.

I kept driving by this spot when I would have a night out drinking at the clutch, and knew I wanted to give it a try. The cute exterior patio, signage, and concept really stuck out to me as original. This spot is all about wine and tinned fish. Hell to the yes. Went out for date night a random Friday and before our normal trek to the bar a few doors down, we wanted to check out what this spot had to offer - so glad we did. Not only was the service friendly, but also this guy knows his flavors and had great recommendations based on our very limited knowledge of preferences when it comes to the grapes. We ordered a baguette with the fancy butter and a tin of anchovies because if there's one thing I have discovered a taste for in middle age, it's those salty delicious little fishies. And hot damn the simple quality ingredients and yummy wine was amazing! Each night there are fun events like WWE viewings and games to play. We will be back. We might become regulars.

Brand new Tinheads over here ! Want to begin this review by saying our experience was great thanks to Lydia! We came to kippered with an open mind on trying new things & she was able to steer us in the right direction. The food was absolutely delicious per her recommendation we went with anchovies and clams with the hot buttered add on as well as a baguette with a side of butter to pair w everything. We came on a Thursday night and even tho the establishment was empty the ambience was just right. I give it 10/10 i will definitely come back & look for Lydia to steer us towards another good choice on the menu !

One of my favorite wine bars, not only do they have an amazing staff and owner but it also has a great neighborhood/ community vibe. A lot of locals come here to just decompress after a long day or work and chit chat with one another, I have made a few new friends here. Other than the vibe they also have a great wine selection (of course) and the food is equally amazing. Also, Thursday nights they do craft nights and the craft varies. The night I went they had a floral arrangement set up and you just have to purchase a glass of wine and you got some really cute flowers out of it.

Really enjoyed our time at Kippered for both happy hour and the regular menu. The wine and food selection are great, and as many others have mentioned, also a tinned seafood lover's heaven. It shares the same owner as the DTLA Cheese Suprette next door (previously in grand central market), so their cheese selection is also top-notch. We made our own charcuterie board and added the baguette (my fav from Clark St bakery), which was delicious with their high quality butter. I loved that they offered a demi baguette that was toasted upon order. FYI the meats and cheeses are sold individually and not as a collective board, but maybe you can request this an off-the-menu option. The happy hour chips with onion dip was also a nice snack for $5. The staff is knowledgeable so if you're feeling undecided or unsure, they'll be able to give you a solid pairing recommendation. We'll definitely be back!

Wow this place is amazing !!! Very cozy atmosphere with a bit of old Hollywood vibe... Love the menu and wine selection. Looking forward to our next visit ...

Very fun vibe but very mysterious speak easy. Try the orange wine! Great decor and music! Very fun spot!

Close up of the grilled octopus. Not our favorite. Soft and meaty but no outstanding flavor, in fact it just tasted a bit fishy.

Absolutely loved this place and would recommend if you are anywhere on your tinned fish journey. They have a huge variety and I would return to try more. This place would be great coming solo and ordering a glass of wine and a plate or two, or with friends and splitting a bottle and ordering multiple items. Dine in order for 3 (Nov 2023) * Bottle of American wine project 2021 Ancestral petillant naturel - 10/10 * Sardine toast - 8/10 * Hot butter clams - 11/10 * Grilled octopus - 6/10 * Trout with juniper - 10/10 * Smoked salmon with chili crisp - 9/10 * Brie cheese and careful cow cheese - 8/10 (Order as a plate and it comes with saltine crackers) Review breakdown: The wine was incredible. It is the perfect wine if you can't decide between a white or a bubbly or a wheat beer. It's made with hybrid grapes from Wisconsin/Minnesota and has light bubbles but feels like a dry white with a "refreshing and tropical taste." So yourself a favor and try it! 10/10 Next up: get the hot buttered clams with bread! Oh my word this was our favorite and it wouldn't have been on our radar if the waiter hadn't recommended. It comes nice and hot in a ceramic dish and the clams are warm, buttery, and flavorful. Spooned onto the warm bread was *chefs kiss* The trout with juniper and the chili crisp salmon was our next favorite. The trout was perfectly salty and the oil it was in was perfectly fragrant. The smoked salmon was equally good. The chili is not too spicy but it does leave an amazing coating of mild/medium heat in your mouth. Personally, I liked the trout more but my friend liked the salmon more. We also really enjoyed the cheese! The careful cow was our favorite. It's had hard cheese served in a few small cut wedges and had a very floral taste. It was lovely and served with jam. The Brie was fine and served with house made sun dried tomatoes. Both we good but we liked the careful better. The sardine toast was super yummy (comes with a spread, northern beans, frisée) and comes served on 2 slices of baguette. This was tasty but tricky for 3 people to share. The grilled octopus was the most expensive ($44) and our least favorite. I can't really say why as the texture was fine (soft, meaty, not rubbery) but it sort of just tasted like fish. Others things to note: It is in a dodgey part of downtown LA so just be mindful if you plan to walk or park far. They do have a full time security guard sitting out front the restaurant so you don't have to worry about anyone bothering you or walking in unwanted. I'd also comment that it is very dark inside! They have tiny flame less candles on the table but I'd appreciate just a tiny bit more light. Day light savings had also just hit where it's fully dark by the time they open at 5pm.

The list clearly favors organic and biodynamic producers, which I always appreciate--minimal intervention, letting the terroir and varietal speak without unnecessary manipulation. The flight format was flexible, offering around five selections with the option to choose three pours. I went with a sparkling red, an orange wine, and a white--each bringing its own personality to the table. The sparkling red was lively and slightly unconventional, the orange wine had that textured, skin-contact complexity, and the white rounded things out with a clean, expressive finish. Our server elevated the experience by guiding the tasting order, which made a noticeable difference in how each wine showed. It's always a good sign when the staff understands how to pace a flight rather than just drop it off and walk away. We didn't explore the food menu this time, so I can't speak to the full program, but purely from a wine perspective, it lands at a solid 4 stars for me. The space itself is ideal for a relaxed midday tasting--plenty of seating, with a great outdoor setup. The tall greenery creates a sense of privacy without feeling closed off, making it just as suitable for a casual date as it is for catching up with friends. Honestly, if you've got a flexible workday and don't need to be on camera, this is a pretty perfect spot to post up with a glass and ease into the afternoon.

I did see some tables out on the sidewalk, but not sure if they all belong to them or Santos right next door. They have a good amount of wines that are domestic and international. Our server, Rob (I think that was his name), gave us a few samples to try before we landed on one. Their menu is not that extensive, so just be aware of that. We didn't have reservations, but we were able to grab a table inside at around 5:30pm on a Saturday. This place was busy. I really liked the Hamachi Crudo. That was so good, but there's only 4 slices for about $21. It's dressed in a ponzu yuzu sauce. It was so good that we ended up pouring the left over sauce on to our Tuna Tostada. Both items were fresh and I could not taste any fishiness. We also ordered the Mushroom Risotto and Cacio e Pepe. I thought the risotto was good, but the rice was definitely undercooked. I would have said something, but we didn't have much time left. The pasta reminded me of Mac n Cheese. I thought it was way too salty and didn't really do it for me. Kind of disappointed in the mains, but the 2 apps were really good.

Glassell Park is a hidden neighborhood in Los Angeles, anyway, and if you don't know what you are looking for, you might zip right past W&S, as we did. Parking is hit and miss, but there are side streets and you will find a space if you give yourself an extra 15 minutes before you come. The neighborhood is mysterious to me, sort of pricey grunge & hipster, iykwim. But! Once you are inside, you are in a completely different world. Bright, clean, genteel, muted, with dappled sunlight dripping through various apertures and alighting in a soft glow here and there on shining metal tables. It's beautiful. Some catchy upbeat contempo-pop music streamed steadily at just the right volume overhead. I found myself resisting the temptation to get up and dance. There are several rooms from which to choose, but I wanted to be seated on the wine-red suede banquette that gave me a view of the whole restaurant and out onto the tree-canopied street. From the time we arrived to the moment we left about an hour later, we were showered with warm smiles and attentive service. And the food? Exquisite. See my pictures. It was hard to choose. One tiny disappointment was they were out of the biscuits that I wanted to start with, but I enjoyed the crusty tender Clark Street bread slices served with warm creamery butter instead. It only got better from there. The two bowls we ordered were filled with fresh vegetables, cooked to perfection, topped with an egg prepared as we requested, i.e., over medium. The portions are modest and it was all so good, we didn't take anything home. We ordered coffee and were brought two tall steaming mugs of Americano, smooth, dark, and delicious. Best of all was the Lemon Lavender cake, a seasonal specialty. Honestly, it might be one of the best, moistest, most flavorful and elegant cakes I have ever had. So fantastic, that I just ordered some lavender buds (if I don't collect them from our garden) to replicate it at home. I don't drink much alcohol but if I did, I would head here for one of their experiences or tastings -- they have a formidable list. Check all this out. And hurry if you want to have Lemon Lavender cake.

Everyone also didn't feel particularly welcoming, from the hostess to the waitress (no smiles). Thankfully, we were seated outside for some fresh air, although the warm murky smell still lingered a bit outdoors. The menu seem fairly limited since nothing really stood out to me as especially exciting. I've studied the menu prior before going, and was only looking forward to their burger, but they didn't have it during dinner apparently. While the dishes were descripted very well on the menu, there was no depth in flavors. I'm talking about the pork belly, lamb chops, tartare, Spanish octopus, and especially the seasonal pasta. I'm happy that it wasn't overly salty, but overall the food tasted mediocre and felt a bit basic. I'm only saying this because I could make it myself, at least the lamb, fatty pork belly, and pasta. Portions were also on the small side. Service was a bit slower as it took some time to get seated and receive our food, and one of our dishes was forgotten until we reminded the staff after already finishing most of the meal. On the positive side, we were able to find easy street parking about a block away, and the restaurant itself has a cozy ambiance that would probably be great for a chill dinner with some wine. However, my group left still feeling very hungry and unsatisfied. To be fair, we came in hungry, and the portions and long wait didn't help.
