My hungry and tired 12 year old boy wanted to eat chicken teriyaki after playing every point at the SCVA Holiday Classic Boys Volleyball 2-Day Tournament in Anaheim, CA. Let me warn everyone trying to find a decent chicken teriyaki restaurant in Anaheim on a Sunday. Most, if not all, are closed on Sundays. Fortunately for us, King Pollo was open. King Pollo is located in an older part of Anaheim, away from the newer, cleaner, and touristy theme park Anaheim area that everyone is familiar with. As a Yelper, I always like to find places off the beaten path. King Pollo is definitely one of those places and the path is pretty beaten. It's located in what appears to be a working class neighborhood. King Pollo can be easily identified by a worn out yellow sign that looks like the graphics need to be updated. Plastered around the outside windows of the restaurant are posters informing passersby what King Pollo sells. King Pollo is not a restaurant you come to for ambience or decor, evidenced by the antiquated booths with unflattering colors. One of the booths had duct tape covering what probably was a large tear. Inside King Pollo on the walls are posters with pictures of food that they sell. I did like the lights that hung above each booth. Although I said customers don't come for the ambience, my two kids and I dined in and enjoyed the lack of customers in the dining area. What King Pollo's saving grace is their delicious and inexpensive food. A restaurant with chicken in their name better have really good chicken. My son ate most of his chicken teriyaki dish and I say most because you are given an abundant amount for an economical $6.99. It was so much that my hungry boy couldn't finish it, which allowed me to eat his leftovers and allow me to give a positive account about this dish. The rice was moist and had good consistency, which complemented the sliced chicken. The chicken teriyaki meal comes with a salad, making it tummy filling. My daughter and I ordered two cheeseburger combos that came with fries and drinks. Burger was decent, but nothing spectacular. This combo comes with a heaping amount of fries, which were seasoned just right and very tasty. King Pollo has a complimentary condiment bar that has jalapeños and peppers, which I appreciated. The young lady who brought our food to our table was nice and had good customer service. King Pollo is definitely a place that I would visit again mainly because of value for your money and from what I ate, they cooked some delicious food. If only they would invest more money in making the place more appealing, they wouldn't have an empty dining area. Don't be deterred by the exterior condition of the place. It might look old and run down outside, but the inside is well-kept with 4-5 tables. We ordered the mini-pack special which comes with a whole chicken, medium pinto beans (boiled, not refried), medium potato salad, medium rice, and medium salsa (with chunks of jalepenos that give it a nice punch)- $14.99. The size of the chicken is smaller than el pollo loco, but the chicken is flavorful and super moist. My husband had a burger before so half the chicken was enough. On a normal day, I think he could eat the whole chicken, so it's not really for sharing. If you want more, I'd recommend the family pack that gives you two chickens and large orders of sides ($24.99). It came with 3 sides: rice, beans, and potato salad along with salsa and tortillas. I mean how could you go wrong? It is Rotisserie, and all that rotisserie is cracked up to be. In an establishment where you see items served at a Mexican Juan Pollo and at a Japanese Teriyaki House you get mucho flavor. The chicken itself is not to moist, just moist enough, the meat, more tender than most. The flavor hits every piece of the chicken. the rest the rice was ok, corn tortillas were good, and salsa too. I need to try the teriyaki bowl next time. Almost on the corner of State College & La Palma, by the 91 frwy, this place has ample parking. The service was very freindly and very fast without sacrificing taste or accuracy. Beans - Fine, nothing special. Potato Salad - Pretty good, but carrots & olives are odd choices to have in it. Salsa - I liked it. Tortillas - Choice of corn or flour, I got flour and we have a ton leftover. For how small the chickens are, they give you way too many tortillas. Last night we each made three (small) tacos and I had enough chicken leftover to make a rice/bean/chicken/salsa bowl today for lunch. I liked the bowl better than eating the tacos. Mmmm, it just sounds more tantalizing that way. On a poster hanging on the side of the borderline dilapidated building, they claim to have "the best rotisserie chicken in the town" and they aren't lying. Upon walking inside, the decor looks no better than an Alberto's knock off that you'd only eat late at night. The $5.99 lunch special gets you half a chiggin, several tortillas and small cups of potato salad, beans, rice and salsa. The chiggin is only slightly greasy with lots of tender meat. And just as another reviewer has stated, places like Juan Pollo or El Pollo Loco should really take notes how King Pollo does chiggin. I have driven by King Pollo quite few times, but have never stopped in because it looks a little rough on the outside. Being short on options we ventured in to see what was available on short notice and were pleasantly surprised to see one of the cleanest restaurants and kitchen/serving areas I've ever been in. The chicken was soft tender and juicy. The skin was mighty tasty by the way. I ordered chicken teriyaki over salad. It was not that great to be honest. Seemed like the chicken was marinated with the sauce prior to cooking which made it too sweet. I should have opted to get the half chicken special. Anyways, there was a salsa and hot pepper bar which was awesome since we love spicy. Service: the guys that were taking our order were nice and got everything quickly. Good rotisserie chicken hard to find when it is an intersection of well marinated flavor, moistness, being cooked perfectly, and price. In terms of marinated flavor, it is spot on with what you expect. It was also moist without being chewy. And in terms of price, it is tough to beat $6.99 for half a chicken with a drink, and extras. The extras were nice for it is quality made salsa that actually taste like salsa versus the generic canned stuff. All in all, the chicken meal was tough to beat. In terms of the setting, the tables were okay, and the napkin holders tend to have napkins missing.
