I would highly recommend this place to anyone. Oh, also, Terry makes the most wonderful breakfasts! I think the snickerdoodle bread is a little piece of heaven on a plate!

The problem is that…read moremy expectations are also pretty vague: if I had a dollar for every night I've spent at inns that are clearly lovable, but that I just didn't love, I'd be staying in a suite at the Grand Hotel Europe. Fortunately, in the absence of clear-cut criteria for that "five star" place, I have the Maguire House to use as a benchmark. When you drive up Cobb Road in the small town of Ashburnham, MA to be greeted by a bounding golden retriever, it's immediately clear that this B&B is a little bit different. For one thing, it's not there out of convenience to a touristy area: when you visit the Maguire House, you are doing it on purpose. This is a huge advantage if you're looking for some true R&R, and Terry provides enough fresh-baked treats to be content barely leaving the 18th-century oasis of her home. Between the beautifully curated collection of antique furniture, the lush goose down comforters, claw-footed bathtubs and innumerable extra touches (the towels, for example, are all perfectly coordinated with bedroom color schemes), it would be understandable if you never went outside here. When my husband and I didn't feel like cross-country skiing last winter, a fire and complimentary glass of wine made this an appealing option. But during a recent June stay, we were scarcely in our room: the view is magnificent and I spent hours watching wild turkeys, woodpeckers and cardinals go about their daily routines. When it was time for a little more action, we took a rowboat out on the lake at the brink of the property. The water was peaceful and perfectly safe, but Abby (the golden retriever) kept watch over us just in case. It should come as no surprise that we will be going back to the Maguire House, though probably not in time to sate my craving for Terry's lemon-blueberry scones. It is a place to bring friends, or a book, or your weekday stress, and lose it in the tranquility that connects New England's past with your future getaways.

Where should I begin?…read more Let's start from the beginning. This is one of two motels in Orange, MA with the closest hotel being 30 minutes away. That makes one's choices limited. As I went to check-in, the Manager (probably the owner) spent 5 minutes repeatedly pointing out that I had not indicated if I wanted a smoking or non-smoking room. I'm pretty sure the Priceline form didn't ask me this or I would have chosen non-smoking. Finally, I asked if there were no non-smoking rooms available to which he replied that there were. Then why the hell does it matter if I indicated this or not? It is completely irrelevant considering that there were like 4 guests checked in. He just wanted to make a pointless point by pointing out that I didn't select a smoking preference. It was crazy. Then, I went into my room and saw that there was no refrigerator. The only reason I chose this motel is because it stated that there was a refrigerator in every room. I went back to the front desk and asked if he could put a refrigerator in there and he told me to use the one in the lobby. I stated that I called and was told there were refrigerators in each room and that I needed one. He looked up another room, pulled the keys and threw them at me and told me I could move into the other room. So now he was hostile. I moved into the room two doors down and as I did, the Manager came out to watch me. Then, he instructed me to move my car down two spaces so that others could park in front of their rooms. Did I really need to move my car when only 4 people were checked in? He was crazy. The new room had hair all over the shower, which I just cleaned up on my own. It smelled like smoke and mustiness. There was a spider on the inside of the door. The towels were super cheap and hard. The toiletries looked like they were from a gas station bathroom. And there wasn't sufficient light in the room. When I went into the hallway the next morning, it smelled strongly of smoke. It was disgusting. Then, when my towels were replaced, there was a cluster of black hairs left on top of them. It was disgusting as well. I should mention that he took the full payment for all 4 nights up front. After two nights, I was involved in an accident and was admitted to the hospital. My friends checked me out and inquired as to how I could receive a refund and he told them to contact the booking company. When Priceline's partner Booking.com contacted them, they lied and said that I had not checked out early. What a sick f***. I end up in the hospital and he lies to keep my money. I finally resorted to going to my credit card company who issued a refund to me regardless of what he said. The manager is the biggest selfish a**hole I have ever met and I would rather sleep in my car than stay at this motel again. A better option is the Travel Inn.

Definitely off the beaten path, however, you can't beat the price for clean and somewhat up-to-date…read morerooms. The front desk was very attentive, friendly, and resourceful. If ever passing through western Massachusetts I would definitely choose this location.

Lots of charming details and touches like the Afternoon Tea from 2:30 - 5:00 pm with cookies and small dessert bars for hotel guests or pay a fee for visitors. Pros: - The carafe of ice water in the room and Biscoff cookies - very much appreciated - Elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor where the rooms were located. Bookshelf of books. - Keurig coffee / tea on the 2nd floor for 24 hours coffee/tea service plus business center with computer and printer. - Room 143 Cora Carlisle on the 2nd floor - lovely, spacious, and comfortable - Plenty of hot water and huge bath towels - Bed was comfortable and room was quiet - Champney's margarita flight was quite good and big enough to share. - Continental breakfast included - muffin, melon sliced fruit, plain yogurt, coffee - The porch with chairs was very nice to sit outside and there was a sitting area with games and a puzzle in the lobby - Air conditioning and heat - room was comfortable - Parking in front of the hotel Cons: - The sink faucet/taps and shower tap metal was a bit discolored with the gold tone worn away. Everything worked fine though. - The string to lower the blinds next to the toilet was non-existent. - Additional housekeeping gratuity added to the bill - The Continental breakfast could have been improved with more fruit (other than cantaloupe and green melon), hard boiled egg. There wasn't a lot of food put out and the coffee was a bit watery. - Slight musty smell downstairs made me cough but rooms were fine. Overall, Deerfield was a charming, historic hotel and I would stay again and come on a Wednesday - Saturday to visit historic Deerfield buildings.

After driving for 8 hours we arrived and my wrestlers were excited for the hot tub, but it was out of operation. The next morning our room didn't have any hot water. Its very important for wrestlers to shower and practice hygiene before wrestling to prevent the spread of disease. I called the front desk and I was told too many people were showering at that time. After an hour the hot water never came on. My kids and myself had to wash by microwaving washcloths and using those to clean ourselves. The front desk assured me the hot water would be back by the end of the day. After I coached for 12 hours, and my kids wrestled all day we returned to find we still did not have hot water. I called the front desk and they told me we did. I was clear that we did not and they told us they would call someone. No one came to the room or did anything to fix it. Again, we washed with microwaved wash cloths. This is completely unacceptable for a hotel. Since I didn't get anywhere when I talked to the front desk staff I decided to send an e-mail, but they don't have any email information on their website, just the phone number to the front desk.

We stayed in Oren's room, which was on the smaller side but fine for our purposes - very bare bones. When we booked it, the website said that it came with a sitting room, but didn't mention that it was a shared sitting room with another unit. However, the sitting room was very pleasant and had a working TV. We stayed for two nights and didn't wake up on time for breakfast (served 8AM - 9:30) either morning, so I can't really speak to that. We only encountered the innkeeper once, but she mostly kept to herself. Many people choose bed & breakfasts for the charm, so that was slightly lacking in our experience. Our only other complaint was the insects - mostly lots of moths, but that wasn't surprising in a place this old. Overall though, the stay worked out for us! The location was very close to the venue of the wedding we were in town for and also to downtown Peterborough, which I recommend checking out.
