    The desserts

I have been coming to the holiday tea for the last three years with my granddaughters. This year the tea was delicious, however the sandwich selection was not as good as previous years. The deviled egg with caviar wasn't a good choice for a tea. The cucumber sandwich was delicious as was the lobster roll. The desserts though nice to look at weren't that good. The price escalated a great deal up ($21) from 2022. Which makes it out of reach for many. The harpist was excellent as always and added a great deal to the enjoyment of the tea. I would prefer simpler sandwiches and a more reasonable price.

We got married at the Inn on Boltwood and had an incredible experience from beginning to end! To Catherine, Jeff, Cory, Sarah, Mitch and all of the dedicated staff at the Inn, we cannot thank you enough for making our day such a dream come true. We had our rehearsal dinner in the greenhouse room at 30 Boltwood the night prior and the food was incredible. We tried 30 Boltwood last year and both agreed that you truly cannot go wrong with any menu item - and my God you haven't lived until you have had their Mac and cheese. We had the 3 course meal with a choice of 3 entrees and both of our families have not stopped talking about it! We had multiple people who have allergies or restrictions and they were accommodated throughout the weekend, which was such a relief as they were able to just enjoy themselves fully. Sarah was an incredible help throughout the dinner and ensured we were all taken care of. We made the decision to move to an outdoor cocktail hour and tented reception due to COVID-19 mask mandates in Amherst, but you seriously could not tell it was not what we originally planned. We felt so secure that our plans would come to life in the hands of the staff, and we were so happy with how everything turned out! Our guests raved about the venue location, the passed hors d'oeuvres and the dinner selection and the staff were beyond communicative - again, Catherine was a HUGE help, from getting us champagne glasses, to general check ins, and helping get stains out of my wife's dress not one but two different times...Both of us have worked for wedding events and in the food service industry in the past and know just how much needs to go on behind the scenes to make an event successful. Their staff worked incredibly hard and provided such an incredible wedding during the heart of the pandemic, which is no easy task. Their flexibility and attention to detail were clear throughout the weekend and made every difference for us. It was an absolutely perfect weekend, which ticked every box for us and we cannot wait to come back for anniversary celebrations!

Only four stars because they changed the name from the Lord Jeffery Inn. I had been coming here since I was a kid, as my grandparents were professors at UMass Amherst. More recently, my daughter was a track recruit at Amherst College so of course, this is where I wanted to stay. The interior has been completely renovated from the old days, eliminating a bit of the old school charm. Still, nostalgia and the prime location had me at five stars. Very recently, the name of the establishment was changed to the Inn at Boltwood because Lord Jeffery had a bit of a mixed history (according to today's standards) back in a colonial times. This falls into the camp of judging historical actors in the context of modern values, which drives all sorts of dubious decisions. But I digress... The room was charming with an enclose porch that was drafty. It's pretty much impossible to get to your room without encountering stairs, but that's ok for us. Parking out back was reasonably convenient, but the spaces are tight. The dining room is contemporary.

I am UMass alumni and was feeling nostalgic so when I started looking for rooms and came across the hotel (which I had forgotten was even there) I got excited about the prospect of being on the campus again. The good: it really is a decent hotel. Nice and modern and updated and comfortable. They have water bottles in the room that can be used to get spring water downstairs for the duration of your stay. I thought that this was a very nice touch since when I need a drink at night I usually end up using a plastic cup to get water out of the tap. They also have a limited continental breakfast that does the job for some. Would have been fine for me but left something to be desired for my kids. The gentleman checking us in at the front desk was friendly and helpful. We were only staying for one night during Thanksgiving so the campus was pretty much deserted but I would definitely come back and stay for longer. The location in the center of campus in the student center with access to tons of food options and amenities is awesome. Perfect spot from which to access and explore the entire campus. The not so good: Hardly anything. You only get one parking space in the garage. Not usually an issue but because my mother was staying with us she had to pay the $20 parking fee. Not a huge deal but I like open access to parking. The bathroom was so teeny you can barely even turn around in there! It does have a nice large stand-up shower which again was fine for me but my 8-year-old son lamented that he couldn't take a bath which he really wanted to do. I would definitely recommend staying here if your main focus is seeing the campus. You cannot beat the location and it's a pretty decent place. Don't let the fact that it's a college hotel scare you!

The shower is pretty small (you need to be a slim person just to enter the bathroom between the inside swing door and the toilet) yet has a grab bar inside the absolutely non-ADA-compliant shower... Not sure why. Pros: it's on UMass campus so convenient if that's where you're going (we were unfortunately going across town to the other college).

The breakfast is nothing but carbs; bread, cereal, cupcakes. No protein, no dairy other than milk for coffee. The fruit that's available looks like it's been sitting in the bowl for several months, certainly not fresh. We had a lot of issues with our room keys ceasing to work. Which was particularly frustrating considering that if we parked at the side door nearest our room we couldn't get it. In the two nights we were there we had to get our keys reprogrammed 4 times. The reception staff on the late shift are very surly, and certainly don't want to help you. Although close to the Hampshire Mall and other stores, the area outside gets quite seedy after dark. Next time I'm back visiting UMass I shall look for alternate accommodation It doesn't even live up to the adage 'cheap & cheerful'.
