Your choices are limited if you want to visit this area and stay in Amherst. I didn't really want to stay on campus at the campus center hotel (very sterile) and the Lord Jeffrey Inn was astronomically expensive. Enter The Black Walnut Inn. My friend said she had stayed here about 15 years ago and it was nice so this is what we booked. It was still extremely expensive ($170-$220 per night) during a fall holiday weekend. The room had a decent sized bathroom and two queen beds. Although it was just me for 2 of the 3 nights. It comes with breakfast but I never got to try it as you have to sign up in advance and planning that far in advance isn't really my thing. I never saw or spoke to anyone who worked there in 3 days. They did come in and clean the room every day and they left a few pieces of Lindt chocolate on the dresser which was nice. The place was pretty clean although there were significant cobwebs in the corners of the room and upper moldings. My only valid complaint is you can hear everything. You can hear people coming and going from their rooms and cars. You can hear the people walking around in the upstairs rooms. On my last evening a group decided to gather at an outdoor table and drink some wine and I could hear their conversation so clearly it was as if I was sitting at the table with them. If you're sensitive to this it could be an issue. Its north of the UMass campus so you're not walking into town or anything but the parking and location are pretty convenient. I'd return.

Just what we were looking for in a bed & breakfast. With a late arrival, a note and our key were awaiting us. The historical house is nice and comfortable. Our room (Mulberry) was just right for two and had a private bath. We woke up to the smell of coffee and fresh baked muffins. Rachel made us a great breakfast to order in the dining room. Would definitely stay here again.

I spent two nights at the inn for my birthday and couldn't have had a better weekend. The room was huge and easily fit 4 people with large windows that let in tons of light. (we stayed in uncle bill's room, room #9) The bathroom, shower/tub were in perfect condition as well. Aside from the incredibly friendly staff, the historical value of every room was truly interesting. I'm so grateful to Tricia for showing us the rooms and their details as they were being changed over. As everyone else has mentioned, the breakfast is phenomenal, you can order anything you'd like and it's served piping hot, fresh and with a smile. All of the choices are delicious. The staff took great care in explaining all of the nearby attractions and staying at this B&B really had such a positive impact on my weekend. I'll definitely be returning!

The house is beautiful with an incredible view, huge windows, comfortable clean rooms, and a very homey feel. It was like staying with a family friend. Josette and Joan were welcoming and made us feel right at home from the moment we arrived at their door. The kitchen greets you with the sights and smells of home cooking in progress, The open living room has comfortable, cozy seating with a wall of windows where one can view the mountains in the distance and the farm animals in the fields around. While sitting on the deck in the early evening, we observed a beautiful gray fox grabbing a peach from the ground under their peach tree before slinking off into the back pasture. Jo and Joan have a living space on another floor and we pretty much had the main floor living room to ourselves for the 3 1/2 days we stayed. The bedroom was very comfortable and the bathroom was clean with comfy robes provided. Jo is a chef extrordinaire, and seemed to provide whatever we wanted for a custom breakfast at whatever time worked best for us. We were attending the Noho Bike Fest on Saturday and were each leaving at different times. Jo got up early specifically to prepare my boyfriend a hearty breakfast before he headed out on his bike. She prepared another breakfast for me a little bit later as I didn't need to be up as early. Amazing! It was a serene and peaceful long weekend away that I hope to do again soon.

The staff here seemed extra attentive and responsive, most notably re-housing me when the initial assigned room was too close to noisy ventilation areas for my comfort. It appeared that they had a regular routine of walking the premises and staying alert to any challenges. The railroad/long style of the single room was a bit larger than I needed, but okay in general. An included couch was an unexpected bonus and especially enjoyable for my cat who was traveling with me.

The contemporary deco was fun while still providing a home away from home feel. The owners have a restaurant named Memo's across the street. We had a fabulous breakfast at Memo's at very reasonable prices. I had mentioned to the owner Christine that it had been my son's birthday the night while we were checking in. The next morning while we had breakfast at Memo's without being asked the owner and restaurant staff surprised my son with a chocolate muffin and candle and a birthday song. It was nice of her to remember and It made the start of his birthday getaway weekend very special. Christine was super attentive to our needs and answered any questions we had as 1st timers there. Lily's Lodge was just 10 minutes from 6 Flags and is right across the street from the annual Big E entrance. While staying at Lily's Lodge it felt like were were truly away yet still had very easy access to the main road which makes it convenient for quick trips to grab last minute items you may have forgotten to pack or just to do some shopping. We look forward to being future guests at Lily's Lodge again. It was a delightful find! Thanks Christine for your hospitality!
