I stayed the night during a recent work trip. The innkeeper, Chris, greeted me warmly in the parking lot and helped get my luggage to my room (Phebe's room). I felt very safe and secure in this location. I had a lovely tour of the back yard and field with the innkeeper. There are several lovely old barns on the property. My room had such a comfortable bed with pristine, crisp white sheets. It was very quiet and I slept well. In the morning, I enjoyed meeting other lodgers over a hearty breakfast of fresh fruit, bacon, fried eggs, toasted croissant with cranberry preserves. I would stay here again at this historic, clean, and inviting inn!

We recently had the pleasure of staying in the John Adam's suite at the Benjamin Prescott Inn in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. I was absolutely blown away by the experience. The inn is located in a beautiful, historic building that has been lovingly restored. The staff is incredibly friendly and welcoming, and the accommodations are top-notch. Our room was spacious and comfortable, with a large bed, a very nice sitting area, and an amazing balcony with a great view!! We stayed in the same suite last year when we visited last year to climb Mt. Monadnock and go to a wedding. It is a great room to relax in after a long day of hiking. The stairs to the room are a little steep but were not an issue for us in any way. It is very nice to have the bathroom separated as it can then accommodate multiple guests. The view from the room was absolutely amazing and we left the balcony door open so we could then smell the lilacs throughout the room. This year we had stopped in multiple places to eat and recommend Pancho's Pizza, Emma's 321 pub, and Kimball Farms as they are a must go : ) We went to Tully Lake and walked the Tully Lake Loop (2hr walk) and then through Doane's Falls (30 min hike) which was amazing and beautiful. The next day we visited the Cathedral of the Pines (20 min walk) and then hiked up Mt. Watatic (3 hrs hike). The innkeeper Michael was very attentive and friendly and always asked how we liked our day trek. Overall it was great and returning to our room always allowed us to end the days in the best way possible.

Notice there are no recent reviews. The Inn changed ownership the beginning of June, so do not expect the same service as the reviews showed from the prior owners. The new owner lives near Boston, so he's not around. It's pretty much self service. It was well decorated and seemed clean, so those are plusses. The suite we stayed in was a little strange though ... Eg, all the floors are unlevel.... like ALOT .. si much that you lean back at a decline when you get in bed. Also the floor of the shower feels unstable/ loud creeking noise, and is very wonky. Towels are very basic. Bed seems good ... other than leaning back. It's not a bad place, but don't expect gourmet breakfast or the service the prior owners gave (according to prior reviews). If you keep that in mind, it's ok accommodations. I'm not sure what else is around here to compare to but this was all that was available in the area at the time. Note, this room, while it was a suite, had no tv. Not sure if that's the case in all rooms or not, but fyi.

The restaurant serves flavorful well-plated dishes worthy of big-city dining, a short American breakfast menu for guests, and drinks in the cozy well-supplied bar and lounge. You'll find welcoming owners, hosts, and staff, and of course nice guests :-) We visit relatives in a nearby town occasionally, and this inn is a local treasure. On this visit, we stayed in the main house in a simply-appointed room with wooded views on the second floor, a flight of steps up from the bright lobby, sitting rooms, lounge, ample restaurant, expansive open deck, and small screened-in porch. We arrived late in the evening on this country lane, and we found the peaceful haven that we love, as the friendly owners took time to welcome us while they were busily putting finishing touches on lovely preparations for one of their always sold-out holiday dining events. On this holiday, breakfast for guests was continental, with freshly made muffins and pastries. Other mornings, there was a short menu of tasty made-to-order breakfasts. We enjoyed the eggs benedict, over-easy and poached eggs, a cheddar omelet, potatoes, english muffins, and thick whole-wheat and white toast that tastes homemade. They have a nice technique for thin perfectly-crispy bacon :-) In between peaceful strolls along the inn's wooded pathways down towards the lake, we drove the few minutes to the eclectic shops and cafes of Peterborough, enjoyed a performance by an excellent musician along with well-crafted beers at a nearby brewery, and even took in our relatives' favorite friendly local bar, with chili dogs on grilled buns, and free picklebacks with our Jameson shots! We met a number of the inn's staff and managers during our stay, and each one was welcoming, while always actively attending to all the needs of the inn and their guests. We love this lovingly-created refreshingly-peaceful country inn.

I know many people…read morelove this place, and I was so excited to go here but I need to be very honest in the ways they can improve and why 3 stars and not 5 stars from us. The booking and check in process was smooth and easy. The front staff were very friendly on the phone and in person. They walked us around to show us the grounds. Our room was exactly as we expected so no surprise there. It was ready when we arrived, clean and stocked with the basics (towel, soap). We didn't have high expectations for a new/updated room as the photos are exactly how the room was. No fancy frills but clean and absolutely fine to stay in. The beds are not that comfortable but fine. The wall paper in farm house 6 was peeling a bit and wear and tear around the unit was present but we did expect the room to be outdated and didn't have any issues over all with the room. The main reason for our 3 star is really based on food, amenities, and grounds. As for food, do not have high expectations as it's very basic. I would rate it 2 at best, but it's all inclusive and does feed the mass groups. Our waitress the first night was awful, we didn't eat for almost an hour. She told us she was rusty and not ready for the groups yet. Little weird, but I guess she was being honest. The other night/day team were much better and more competent. One odd thing we did notice, food is not in abundance when it's put out for guests to grab. Once something runs out, it runs out. I'm all for not wasting food, that's very important but we noticed often food would run out (cookies, appetizers, and other items to grab-go). For example, the cocktail adults evening, majority of the finger appetizers ran out. Another night, they had watermelon for dessert and it ran out. Ultimately, we can't say we didn't eat, we did, some items just would run out and that was it in terms of offerings. Another concern was the indoor pool, it was freezing. Like unable to swim at all -cold- cold. I would think summer time the pools outside are much better, but we didn't try those as it was too early in the season (April). The toys on the main lawn near the sand pit and volleyball area are all broken and worn out. One of the swings broken and missing. The kiddie barn is broken where the kids play. The boats near the lake are all broken and dingy. I understand this place is more about family legacy and farm life, which yes is special, but most things I found are falling apart around the main lawn area especially. Just in general, broken or not cared for. I am not expecting anything to be brand new or perfect but they're run down. We did most of the kid events and the play doh was all dried out and the crafts very limited. We felt there could've been a few more kid friendly events going on (maybe a movie, more crafts, outdoor music/games, outdoor events). The activity staff seemed really uninterested when it came to many of the events too which was unfortunate. Rather than really engage the kids they often stood around. These are the main reasons for our 3 star review. The concept and legacy idea for families is awesome, but the upkeep just isn't there and not as much engagement as we hoped. I love being outdoors, and for my kids to enjoy their time outside and farm life but they need to clean up a bit here. A few things we did love, to be fair and honest, the farm animals, Pony Ride, Easter egg hunt, and magic show. They were fun and engaging. Also, my kids absolutely loved trying to get eggs from the Hens (despite the limited number, but that's not East Hill's fault, that's just kiddos who claim them all and run away before others get a chance to grab one from the Hens). I also had a massage, that's not East Hill, but their outside vendor they use in their main lobby. It wasn't very good. The lady was nice but the chair massage was not relaxing or enjoyable. She barely massaged me. I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this add on. This spot has so much incredible potential if they just maintained it better. Such special memories for families to create here. I get leaving the rooms nostalgic and maybe the farm areas, but the grounds, toys, arts and crafts and a few other areas could use some upkeep. Unfortunately that's why this is only a 3 star from our family.

Fortunately, in the absence of clear-cut criteria for that "five star" place, I have the Maguire House to use as a benchmark. When you drive up Cobb Road in the small town of Ashburnham, MA to be greeted by a bounding golden retriever, it's immediately clear that this B&B is a little bit different. For one thing, it's not there out of convenience to a touristy area: when you visit the Maguire House, you are doing it on purpose. This is a huge advantage if you're looking for some true R&R, and Terry provides enough fresh-baked treats to be content barely leaving the 18th-century oasis of her home. Between the beautifully curated collection of antique furniture, the lush goose down comforters, claw-footed bathtubs and innumerable extra touches (the towels, for example, are all perfectly coordinated with bedroom color schemes), it would be understandable if you never went outside here. When my husband and I didn't feel like cross-country skiing last winter, a fire and complimentary glass of wine made this an appealing option. But during a recent June stay, we were scarcely in our room: the view is magnificent and I spent hours watching wild turkeys, woodpeckers and cardinals go about their daily routines. When it was time for a little more action, we took a rowboat out on the lake at the brink of the property. The water was peaceful and perfectly safe, but Abby (the golden retriever) kept watch over us just in case. It should come as no surprise that we will be going back to the Maguire House, though probably not in time to sate my craving for Terry's lemon-blueberry scones. It is a place to bring friends, or a book, or your weekday stress, and lose it in the tranquility that connects New England's past with your future getaways.

There is a large comfortable sitting room, where we spent part of a pleasant evening with the friendly owners, swapping travel stories. And from there is an enclosed brick pathway to a rec room with a nice billiard table. To the left is the clean outdoor pool, or ahead is the open covered lighted porch with a ceiling fan, which has a step down to the pool. We took a few laps, then walked down and around to the patio with a fire-pit and a large jacuzzi. On an overcast September day, the pool was cool but not chilly, and the jacuzzi was warm with easy-to-adjust powerful jets. The chicken coop is hidden downhill a bit further, and there's no resident rooster so you might hear some cheerful clucking but no raucous crowing. It's just 1.5h by MBTA train from North Station in Boston to this tranquil hideaway. The hosts are charming and hard-working, always making improvements, always ready with friendly conversation. The price is of course a bit more than some local hotels, but not at all expensive, and our envious hotel-staying relatives all came by for a relaxing evening of wine on the porch.
