Chicken cordon blue with linguine and mushroom sauce.

This is a hidden gem, people! Classic fare at The Grove, the restaurant at Woodbound Inn. Tucked in the woods of southern NH, you will find this cozy, peaceful, and elegant restaurant. We came on a Friday night, which was busy but not loud or crowded. There was a talented guitarist playing relaxing sounds, adding to the charm of the place. We started with scallops wrapped in bacon. They were perfectly cooked, fresh, and drizzled with a homemade balsamic glaze. We eagerly anticipated the entrees and they did not disappoint. My partner had soup and salad-- a hearty homemade minestrone with a nice salad that included two beautiful pieces of fried goat cheese. So good! I usually do not order chicken when out, since we have it at home all the time, but I couldn't resist ordering the chicken cordon blue over freshly made linguini, with an incredible mushroom sauce. Sooooo gooood. We did not have room for dessert, and we do not usually drink, so I can't comment on those, but I'm sure they are good here. Service was very good, ambience outstanding. The bill was in the 70s but it was well worth it. If you are anywhere near here looking for a great dining experience, check out The Woodbound Inn.

Our son attends Franklin Pierce University, a few miles away, and the Woodbound is our go to place to stay. Very quaint, nice staff, and very comfortable. We almost look for excuses to come for a visit just to stay here!

Weekend getaway here. Rooms are excellent. We ate at the Inn's restaurant and everything was spot on. The dining room was clean and organized. Waitress was excellent. Our food came out quickly, but more importantly, our entrees were absolutely impressive. We had the Blackened Shrimp Pasta and the Chicken Broccoli Alfredo, they were perfectly cooked and a fantastic flavor profile. Compliments to the chef and staff. Thanks

The tapenade tastes much better than it looks. Perhaps use a ramekin?

We stopped by this place last Thursday for dinner. There were several buildings, and only the inn entrance was marked. We drove around to a rear building where we saw lights on and waiters going in and out, thinking that might be the restaurant. One of the waiters told us the restaurant wasn't open that night because there was a private function going on, so we left and ate elsewhere. We came back the next night and found the restaurant inside the inn. The menu was puzzling -- appetizers and small plates on one side, and the other was almost entirely sandwiches except for two or three entree-type items. I asked the waitress if we had received the lunch menu in error, and she apologized, "We usually offer specials, but we aren't offering any tonight." (The menu promises "dinner specials offered on Friday and Saturday evenings," precisely when one would expect a competent restaurant to offer specials.) I ordered the "classic margarita," which came in a six-ounce Old Fashioned glass, and was unsatisfyingly weak. My wife ordered the shrimp in panko with fries and slaw, and I ordered the steak tips with jasmine rice. It took a full 20 minutes before the bread basket was delivered ("it's still in the oven"). It was super crusty, and had the look and feel of sourdough, but no sourdough taste. It was accompanied by a tapenade that was actually quite tasty, once you got past the presentation, which was unfortunately suggestive of cat food on a saucer. Ten minutes later, a waiter arrived with someone else's order, and was sent back. It was another ten before our own food arrived. The shrimp was acceptable, with a cocktail sauce that had way too much horseradish for my wife's taste. The steak tips were unremarkable and the rice was unflavored, though the long green beans were crisp and perfect. We were initially presented with someone else's check, sent it back, and then took care of our own. The waitress was a pleasant conversationalist, but kept having to apologize for the lapses we were experiencing. The inn is historic, and the ambience is definitely elegant. Unfortunately, elegance without execution is just pretension.

One of my more positive Inn experiences! The staff were super friendly, my room was comfortable and clean, and The Grove restaurant attached was delicious. I especially enjoyed the complimentary breakfast voucher - that was a wonderful surprise!

The Woodbound Inn was. . . not at all what I envisioned it would be. First off. . . this address didn't exist in my GPS. Finding the inn proved quite difficult, not just for us, but for many of those we were meeting. The bartender later agreed that it truly is difficult to find this location. After passing by, convinced that "it couldn't be that place. . . " we turned around and hesitantly pulled in. After finding out we were in fact in the correct place, check-in went smoothly and we were off to the "Edgewater" building, located adjacent to the main inn. With high hopes after seeing the well-decorated main lobby and updated decor, we opened the doorway to the long hallway of Edgewater and were confronted with a out-of-order soda machine and cots stored in the hallway. Opening the door to our room, we were confronted with an odor attempted to be masked by an entire bottle of Febreze. The dated, striped wallpaper, combined with folk art, a Zenith television, and bookshelves containing "The American Golf Associations Yearbook of 1985" made me feel like I'd been transported back in time. Surely this was not the $160/night room we booked. . . As unpacking and preparation began for the wedding to come (the whole reason we found ourselves in this unassuming establishment) more "surprises" presented themselves. Sinks that couldn't contain the jet-force power of the water spewing from them, light shades that fell from their precarious post when barely touched, an at-first missing then eventually-found but broken phone cord, and mysterious large wet areas in the carpet. The reminder kept floating through the air between us. . . "we just have to sleep here 1 night, we just have to sleep here 1 night". . . (too bad 1 bed had missing coils and the other squeaked terribly with the slightest movement)!! The wedding itself was quite lovely. Due to the poor weather, the ceremony was held in a small barn creatively decorated and cozy for the guests in attendance. The reception was held in the bottom floor of Edgewater, but boasted the warmth and updated decor of the main inn. The main inn had both accommodations on the upper floors as well as a bar, restaurant, and sitting room on the first floor. Lastly, the grounds had several cabins lake-side that had beautiful views and relatively respectable interiors. While more expensive, I would have gladly shelled out the extra money to stay in either of these upgraded accommodations. The Inn has several perks that we were unable to take advantage of for various reasons including a private beach on Lake Contoocook (poor weather), a 9-hole golf course (that was not open), hiking trails, shuffleboard and horseshoes, and skating/sledding/snowmobiling in the winter months. The bar was cheap and comfortable, the restaurant was pretty good (breakfast was mediocre but the food served during the reception was delicious!). Complimentary breakfast ends at 9 am. I'm not sure that I would return to this location unless invited to a similar event in the future. The amount of money paid compared to the quality of services and accommodations was not on par. I would absolutely avoid booking a room in Edgewater, unless updates are made to this building as were applied to the others. Still, I think the prices are a bit steep and would certainly look elsewhere in New Hampshire before booking at this location for another weekend getaway.

Rat outside

First we were attending a wedding and this is what we observed for $250+ per room * Our room was the size of a postage stamp with towels big enough for your hair * Dirty used mask under our bed. You could see it when you walked in so housekeeping is slacking * Dead rat directly around the corner from main entrance near parking lot ( picture included) * One of the dinner choices were Zoodles with a mushroom ragu. During the lacking breakfast we needed more potatoes and the server told the cook in the kitchen. We heard the cook say, "I'm not feeding these people for the whole day!". I got a plate of spiral pasta and broccoli on the side Would I ever go back there again? Not in a million years My best advice? Get a hotel or airbnb and get what you paid for

Fettuccine Alfredo & Chicken Parm Sandwich

I highly recommend The Grove at Woodbound inn and their menu! They set up the tables for Valentine's day beautifully & the food came out incredible.

Upon our arrival (boyfriend in tow), we were cheerfully greeted, given a tour of the common areas and taken up to our room. The common areas included a living room with flat screen TV and fireplace, sun porch which got tons of sun in the morning and a deck. Our room was tastefully decorated and appointed with a gas remote controlled fireplace (AMAZING!), flat screen TV, deliciously high thread-count sheets, plush towels and attached bath with a pocket door! I have a thing for pocket doors :) We also had a beautiful view of the river in the backyard. Everything seemed brand new, yet the place still had the character of an old New England home. Paula and Rob had delicious breakfasts each morning and were flexible about what time it was served. They also were extremely helpful, even making our new year's dinner reservation for us. Our last night, we were very tired from snowboarding/skiing all day and we wanted to have pizza for dinner. Since none of the places in town delivered, Paula and Rob offered to pick it up for us. Way beyond the call of duty! So if you're visiting the Monadnock region, I HIGHLY recommend staying with Rob & Paula at Little River Bed and Breakfast. They are the best and I will definitely be coming back.

If I could give this place 10 stars, I would. I've been spending weekends there every year for…read moreabout 11 years. Mostly, I've attended with a group of country dancers, but recently began going with my grandson, just for a mini-vacation. First: The accommodations. There are several buildings that offer a variety of rooms. We love the cottages, which are actually a three unit structure just outside the main inn. Each includes a sitting room, bathroom and two bedrooms (1 queen and the other with 2 twins.) The knotty pine walls make you feel like a kid at camp again, but the cottages were renovated within the past couple of years and are up to date and well appointed. No telephone or television, just a small refrigerator. I have also stayed in several of the rooms in the Main Inn, which are also very nice. They can accommodate a single person or an entire family, with several different arrangements. There are other, pricier rooms on the property, some of which include television or air conditioning. To each his own, but I love the old time feel of the inn and the cottages. The amenities: There are 3 pools (1 indoor) and 2 hot tubs (1 indoor) as well as a sauna. They are very well maintained and use at your own risk, as there are no lifeguards. There's shuffleboard, swings, sandbox, etc. but the best attraction is the animals. It is a working farm and you're welcome to visit the barns to see the sheep, goats, pigs, horses, cows, ponies, donkeys, chickens, turkeys, bunnies, etc. They've recently cut back on the feeding because too much bread is not good for them. But you can visit and pet them. There are often babies - a goat was born during my recent stay. You can milk a cow and a goat or pick your own eggs from the chicken coop. Extra activities: In summer months, there's boating on the lake, hikes, kayaking, horseback riding and pickup games of kick ball on the lawn. In winter, they have an indoor ice skating rink, snow shoeing and cross country skiing. (You can rent them right there.) Most weekends include new stop family activities, like crafts, games, cooking and animal related activities. Food: This is a highlight. Meals are family style, all you can eat and absolutely amazing. Your overnight stay includes 3 full meals. My grandson and I had our own table reserved for us every night with the same wait staff assigned. They are most accommodating to any dietary requests and very kid friendly. The service is incredibly efficient. I've included many pictures from a recent group dance weekend. In addition to the 3 meals, there's a happy hour style event in the late afternoon with an adult table of hot & cold appetizers and cocktails as well as a kid version with snacks and lemonade. The setting: Right at the base of Mount Monadnock, the farm offers beautiful views of the lake and mountain. If you prefer the indoors, there are comfortable, cozy common areas, including living rooms with fireplaces, library, game room with television, ping pong and board games. They also have a lovely little giftshopIf you are adventurous and tire of the farm (gasp!), the town of Keene is a short drive away. I can not recommend this place enough. It's unlike any vacation you'll take anywhere else. We love East Hill Farm! Update: Just returned from yet another amazing farm experience. The thing that impresses me the most about The Inn at East Hill Farm is that the quality of the visit never waivers. We've all gone to places that were really above and beyond, only to find things slack off after many years (or less) in business. But this place delivers EVERY TIME and I have been coming consistently for more than a decade, visited in three seasons. The accommodations are beautiful, the service impeccable, the food a highlight and the farm experience unique. Thanks for another great little vacation, East Hill Farm!

I know many people…read morelove this place, and I was so excited to go here but I need to be very honest in the ways they can improve and why 3 stars and not 5 stars from us. The booking and check in process was smooth and easy. The front staff were very friendly on the phone and in person. They walked us around to show us the grounds. Our room was exactly as we expected so no surprise there. It was ready when we arrived, clean and stocked with the basics (towel, soap). We didn't have high expectations for a new/updated room as the photos are exactly how the room was. No fancy frills but clean and absolutely fine to stay in. The beds are not that comfortable but fine. The wall paper in farm house 6 was peeling a bit and wear and tear around the unit was present but we did expect the room to be outdated and didn't have any issues over all with the room. The main reason for our 3 star is really based on food, amenities, and grounds. As for food, do not have high expectations as it's very basic. I would rate it 2 at best, but it's all inclusive and does feed the mass groups. Our waitress the first night was awful, we didn't eat for almost an hour. She told us she was rusty and not ready for the groups yet. Little weird, but I guess she was being honest. The other night/day team were much better and more competent. One odd thing we did notice, food is not in abundance when it's put out for guests to grab. Once something runs out, it runs out. I'm all for not wasting food, that's very important but we noticed often food would run out (cookies, appetizers, and other items to grab-go). For example, the cocktail adults evening, majority of the finger appetizers ran out. Another night, they had watermelon for dessert and it ran out. Ultimately, we can't say we didn't eat, we did, some items just would run out and that was it in terms of offerings. Another concern was the indoor pool, it was freezing. Like unable to swim at all -cold- cold. I would think summer time the pools outside are much better, but we didn't try those as it was too early in the season (April). The toys on the main lawn near the sand pit and volleyball area are all broken and worn out. One of the swings broken and missing. The kiddie barn is broken where the kids play. The boats near the lake are all broken and dingy. I understand this place is more about family legacy and farm life, which yes is special, but most things I found are falling apart around the main lawn area especially. Just in general, broken or not cared for. I am not expecting anything to be brand new or perfect but they're run down. We did most of the kid events and the play doh was all dried out and the crafts very limited. We felt there could've been a few more kid friendly events going on (maybe a movie, more crafts, outdoor music/games, outdoor events). The activity staff seemed really uninterested when it came to many of the events too which was unfortunate. Rather than really engage the kids they often stood around. These are the main reasons for our 3 star review. The concept and legacy idea for families is awesome, but the upkeep just isn't there and not as much engagement as we hoped. I love being outdoors, and for my kids to enjoy their time outside and farm life but they need to clean up a bit here. A few things we did love, to be fair and honest, the farm animals, Pony Ride, Easter egg hunt, and magic show. They were fun and engaging. Also, my kids absolutely loved trying to get eggs from the Hens (despite the limited number, but that's not East Hill's fault, that's just kiddos who claim them all and run away before others get a chance to grab one from the Hens). I also had a massage, that's not East Hill, but their outside vendor they use in their main lobby. It wasn't very good. The lady was nice but the chair massage was not relaxing or enjoyable. She barely massaged me. I wouldn't recommend spending $20 on this add on. This spot has so much incredible potential if they just maintained it better. Such special memories for families to create here. I get leaving the rooms nostalgic and maybe the farm areas, but the grounds, toys, arts and crafts and a few other areas could use some upkeep. Unfortunately that's why this is only a 3 star from our family.

Fortunately, in the absence of clear-cut criteria for that "five star" place, I have the Maguire House to use as a benchmark. When you drive up Cobb Road in the small town of Ashburnham, MA to be greeted by a bounding golden retriever, it's immediately clear that this B&B is a little bit different. For one thing, it's not there out of convenience to a touristy area: when you visit the Maguire House, you are doing it on purpose. This is a huge advantage if you're looking for some true R&R, and Terry provides enough fresh-baked treats to be content barely leaving the 18th-century oasis of her home. Between the beautifully curated collection of antique furniture, the lush goose down comforters, claw-footed bathtubs and innumerable extra touches (the towels, for example, are all perfectly coordinated with bedroom color schemes), it would be understandable if you never went outside here. When my husband and I didn't feel like cross-country skiing last winter, a fire and complimentary glass of wine made this an appealing option. But during a recent June stay, we were scarcely in our room: the view is magnificent and I spent hours watching wild turkeys, woodpeckers and cardinals go about their daily routines. When it was time for a little more action, we took a rowboat out on the lake at the brink of the property. The water was peaceful and perfectly safe, but Abby (the golden retriever) kept watch over us just in case. It should come as no surprise that we will be going back to the Maguire House, though probably not in time to sate my craving for Terry's lemon-blueberry scones.
