    Pull out couch with paraphernalia

Although the wedding we attended was beautiful, we had trouble with our room. While putting my two small children to bed, we found a lighter, pill and a device for smoking underneath the couch cushion. We were given another room, but due to the hazardous material found, we requested a partial refund for the one night. If my children had some in contact with those items, they could have been seriously hurt. Management ignored my first correspondence, and only replied when I added other departments to the email. Even so, they by passed any comments of a refund and told me they can assure me the room was cleaned properly. My response was that if it was cleaned properly, we would not have found drug paraphernalia in our room. For a hotel that does so well, one night refunded shouldn't be an issue. DRUGS were found in our room with two children staying there. This is utterly disgusting behavior by the management. Who knows what we would have found if we unfolded the couch in its entirety... this is NOT properly cleaned and this is NOT safe.

I grew up about a mile away from this hotel. I haven't lived in the area for decades but I come back to visit relatives, family reunions etc. The wife and I always stay here. Here's why. The Colonial Hotel is a basic mid-level hotel. Not mid-level in quality but in type. Not the Four seasons but not a Super 8 either. It has all the basics. Nice rooms of the usual types. An indoor pool and Jacuzzi. A bar that often has bands on the weekend. A decent restaurant. By the way, this is also a pet friendly hotel. This may be the cleanest hotel I have ever experienced. Everything is spotless from the rooms to the rugs in the hallways. The bathrooms are amazingly clean. The Colonial is not a chain but is privately owned. As a result the staff has a different, and exceptional outlook on customer service. You really feel appreciated. It you are traveling to central Massachusetts this is a great place to spend a night or two!

Fortunately, in the absence of clear-cut criteria for that "five star" place, I have the Maguire House to use as a benchmark. When you drive up Cobb Road in the small town of Ashburnham, MA to be greeted by a bounding golden retriever, it's immediately clear that this B&B is a little bit different. For one thing, it's not there out of convenience to a touristy area: when you visit the Maguire House, you are doing it on purpose. This is a huge advantage if you're looking for some true R&R, and Terry provides enough fresh-baked treats to be content barely leaving the 18th-century oasis of her home. Between the beautifully curated collection of antique furniture, the lush goose down comforters, claw-footed bathtubs and innumerable extra touches (the towels, for example, are all perfectly coordinated with bedroom color schemes), it would be understandable if you never went outside here. When my husband and I didn't feel like cross-country skiing last winter, a fire and complimentary glass of wine made this an appealing option. But during a recent June stay, we were scarcely in our room: the view is magnificent and I spent hours watching wild turkeys, woodpeckers and cardinals go about their daily routines. When it was time for a little more action, we took a rowboat out on the lake at the brink of the property. The water was peaceful and perfectly safe, but Abby (the golden retriever) kept watch over us just in case. It should come as no surprise that we will be going back to the Maguire House, though probably not in time to sate my craving for Terry's lemon-blueberry scones. It is a place to bring friends, or a book, or your weekday stress, and lose it in the tranquility that connects New England's past with your future getaways.

This beautiful wooded oasis is just up the hill from Fitchburg State University. The home is lovely, with three upstairs rooms available for guests. With our family along, we spent time in two of the rooms. The Harvard is spacious and has a great shower with streams from two sides. What a luxurious experience! The Hudson is also roomy with a serene view of the pool and the back woods (and chicken coop!). It has a jetted tub, so very relaxing, and a shower too. The beds are huge and comfortable, with what must be a pillow-top on the tall firm mattress. These might be the most comfortable rooms we've ever stayed in at a B&B! Breakfast is freshly made with several delicious options from a menu where you make you selections the night before. The eggs are fresh from their own chickens! The hosts Sarah and Ryan served us in a well-lit "Florida Room" with a view of the flower-garden. And we saw a hummingbird flitting among pink and lavender flowers! On the first floor, in addition to the breakfast room, there's a kitchenette with complimentary beer and soft drinks and snack bars, single-serve coffees, and tea bags with a hot and cold water dispenser, (and both milk and cream, thx!). There is a large comfortable sitting room, where we spent part of a pleasant evening with the friendly owners, swapping travel stories. And from there is an enclosed brick pathway to a rec room with a nice billiard table. To the left is the clean outdoor pool, or ahead is the open covered lighted porch with a ceiling fan, which has a step down to the pool. We took a few laps, then walked down and around to the patio with a fire-pit and a large jacuzzi. On an overcast September day, the pool was cool but not chilly, and the jacuzzi was warm with easy-to-adjust powerful jets. The chicken coop is hidden downhill a bit further, and there's no resident rooster so you might hear some cheerful clucking but no raucous crowing. It's just 1.5h by MBTA train from North Station in Boston to this tranquil hideaway. The hosts are charming and hard-working, always making improvements, always ready with friendly conversation. The price is of course a bit more than some local hotels, but not at all expensive, and our envious hotel-staying relatives all came by for a relaxing evening of wine on the porch.
