63. Beef Chow Fun

So this metal piece came out. When I asked for a refund, she wanted proof. When I did, she said "then why didn't you call in the beginning before finishing the most." How would I know when a metal piece will be in my food?! Then she refused to refund and just left. Beware you can get a surprise metal piece in your food.

Chicken broccoli.

Go-to Chinese take out & delivery joint in the area. Food is clean without the usual greasiness from many of the places. Delivery minimum is $10, so it takes 2 combos to make that amount. No biggie. One for lunch and save one for dinner!

Chicken and broccoli with no sauce

Asked for extra sauce on my chicken and broccoli but got no sauce instead....thanks for ruining my lunch, I'm sure my dog will enjoy it.

Not too bad at all. Ordered the chicken chow fun and it came in generous portions. Just didn't like the $10 credit card minimum.

Hong Ban Jang - Black beans noodles

- Extremely efficient service--staff are always on standby to clear tables and keep things moving,…read moreeven during the Saturday dinner rush; quick to replenish banchan and refill water without being asked - Plenty of tables and booths for comfortable dining; clean, bright, and well-organized space - Food was decent: glass noodle dumplings--hot, fresh, and filled with a savory glass noodle mixture; soy chicken wings--crispy and nicely seasoned; jja jang myeon (noodles with black bean sauce)--generously sauced, though it could use more minced meat for better balance; bul go gi bap (stir-fried marinated beef over fried rice)--tender, flavorful beef with perfectly cooked fried rice - Overall, a solid spot for quick, satisfying Korean fare--efficient service and good food, though a few dishes could use a bit more depth

There's Korean food, Chinese food, and then there's Korean-Chinese food. This particular sub-genre…read moreis close to my heart, and whenever I asked friends and acquaintances about where I could find a decent bowl of those unctuous, slippery black bean noodles (called jjajangmyun), most listed Hong Ban Jang close to the tops of their lists. The jjajangmyun here are great. It's a hearty serving and a rich sauce with bits of vegetables and pork. Don't get confused when they plop a scissor next to your bowl - it's to cut the noodles down to size so they're easier to eat. At most Chinese-Korean restaurants, they've smartened up to the power of a mix-and-match menu. Hong Ban Jang has quite a few on the menu, noted in fun Korean portmanteaus like bokjjangmyun (half fried rice, half black bean noodles) or tang jjang myun (half sweet and sour fried pork, half noodles). These are served in clever divided bowls and a good way to get a good portion of two hits. Speaking of hits, my family and I tried two - the aforementioned tang soo yuk, or sweet and sour fried pork, is incredible here. Hot, crispy, and big chunks of meat (as opposed to other restaurants which shall not be named, who have shaved costs by deep frying paper thin bits of pork). It's served with a sweet sauce that has chunks of fruits (peaches? pineapples? We couldn't decide which, but it was delicious). Good as these were, I loved the lajogi even more. These are translated 'stir-fried chicken in hot sauce' on the menu, and they're deep fried nuggets of chicken, covered in a zingy, pepper-studded spicy sauce. My family and I came on a late Saturday lunch hour and things were hopping in here. Every table was full and there was a bit of a wait (admittedly, we were also a larger party so it took some time to mash tables together). The servers know how to keep up with such rush; even when there seems to be way more tables and customers than staff, they're somehow always there when you need something.

Rahongbu Malatang - Dry pot

Went to Rahongbu Malatang for some dry pot on a weeknight for dinner. It's in the same restaurant…read moreas Hong Chun Cheon, which serves dakgalbi. The dry pot here is similar to others, where you serve yourself from a raw bar, the ingredients are weighed, and they cook it for you to the spice level of your liking. I don't like that noodles are charged separately from the weight of the other ingredients (vegetables, fish cakes, meat, etc.) Because of this, i almost opted to order one of the dakgalbi dishes on the menu for Hong Chun Cheon. However, the prices listed on the menu are for one serving. When i tried to order, the lady at the counter explained I had to order two order minimum. So the real price for one order of cheese dakgalbi is $51.90, not $25.95. This was annoying because I was the only person who wanted dakgalbi, which mean i ended up not getting it. I did get my dry pot though. They make it spicy just like everyone else. At about $16 per pound with separate charges for noodles, it's slightly more expensive than other dry pot restaurants in the area. I eventually wanna come back for the dakgalbi, but I'm gonna need to make sure i have a partner beforehand.

Upon getting a table, you can order either the mala options or the chicken bbq (닭갈비) options. If…read moreyou're getting mala, you can self-serve any ingredients you'd like - malatang was cheaper ($14.95/lb) than the dry pot version ($16.95/lb). There aren't too many options but still ample to make a delicious mala dish. I got the Malatang with the Medium level which was the best for me, although I was sniffling a bit towards the end. I think Mild is also a great option, as it was still flavorful with a slight heat. We had a bit of a wait on Friday night as expected but luckily, upon being seated it's just a matter of waiting for the kitchen to prepare your dish. They offered us complimentary sweet potato tempura on the house which helped curb our hunger in the meantime. There are only three people working front of house so please be patient!

The dining room was empty when we rocked up on a weekday late afternoon, and it was nice to sit at a table by the window for a street view. The staff was quick and efficient, and we got a super heavy tea pot of hot barley tea in no time. Food came out without delay. I love how theirs comes with loads of veggies, even as I question the use of green beans which is a first for me (to see them in sweet and sour pork). And while it was distracting and would rather have the dish without the beans, the star of the fish, the pork, was just right and we gobbled it up. I hope they stay open for a long time.

The noodle sauce is very heavy (I liked it), and the noodle texture is perfect. The portion of sweet & sour pork is small (I usually get 3-4 people portion, but this one is good for 2 people). They do have private parking lot. - Noodle with special black bean sauce (4/5): very heavy and deep sauce - Noodle with spicy black bean sauce (4/5): light sauce & moderate spicy - Sweet & sour pork (3/5): small portion, and average taste
