I've been here twice now for the vegetable egg Foo Young and Kung Pao Beef lunch specials. Overall the food is good. Where I come from on the East Coast roast pork fried rice is always included in the lunch specials. Kim's Restaurant is too cheap to offer it with their lunch specials and just give plain basic fried rice with egg mixed in which is surprising. Instead of including a small cup of soup with their lunch specials they also decide to save money by giving you a mini spring roll and a could of miniscule fried wontons with nothing inside! Unbelievable! Aside from those cost cutting maneuvers the entrees I tried were very well done. The vegetable egg Foo Young is one of the best egg Foo Youngs I have ever had and the Kung Pao Beef was decent too. The portions are generous and the prices are extremely fair and probably haven't changed in 25 years or maybe more! Lunch specials start at only $9.50 and go no higher than $13. After Yees Chinese Restaurant on Slauson closed many years ago, ive been searching for a new spot to get that same taste from. It's definitely not Yees (oh how i miss that 3-in-one, or those fried chicken egg rolls) but it will do. The service is mid, the place used to let you dine in and take in the ambience, but after covid its just a "place your order at the door" spot now. The chicken chow mein and orange chicken is solid. It's a lot of stuff on the menu I haven't tried, but I'm open to suggestions. read more

Went to Kim's last night and was very happy with the food. With so many Chinese places closing, I've been searching for a new place and have found it. It was Super Bowl Sunday, the BEST day of the year to go out to eat, everyone is at home watching the game. Even traffic was really light. My wife and I got the bbq fried rice which was better than average, chicken and green beans (chicken was a tad salty) and shrimp chow mein. Overall it was a 4.5 star meal, rounded up to 5. Nextdoor lied to me. I will never listen to my neighbors again. Had seen Kim's brought up repeatedly when people were looking for good Chinese food in the area. My husband wanted Chinese. The quality of the food used to be good. It isn't anymore. Today I ordered house fried rice. There was no beef and the shrimp were tiny freeze-dried shrimp, exactly like you get in a Cup-of-Noodles. I called from home once I saw the rice, and the woman said,"alway like that." I was dog-tired but I got in my car and brought the food back for a refund. The woman wanted to be argumentative. I came for a refund, not justification for this nonsense. The rice was full of peas and carrots, and very little chicken and no beef at all. They said they no longer put beef in their house-fried rice. And they attempted to justify charging me a full entree price for sub-par ingredients you find in a cheap instant ramen cup of noodles. Those freeze-dried shrimp are tiny and not meant to be used in a fried rice dish in a restaurant. Very disappointed in the food and the service. Also, initially they lost my order and I sat a long time waiting. Once I came to the window to inquire, the guy realized they'd dropped the ball, They slapped something together quickly and gave it to me. I will never go to Kim's again. Love, love, love this place! Pro tip - park in the back rather than on Crenshaw Blvd, mainly because there are more spots there. This is the Chinese food that I'm most used to and it is a comfort food. The salad was great and the fried chicken even better. We got this delivered so maybe the in restaurant experience is much different. For American Chinese food it was very bland. The noodles had good texture, but I couldn't really taste anything. When the orange chicken arrived it was in this very gelatin like sauce. So we needed to reheat it to make the sauce consistently a sauce again. The one thing I will say is that it comes with rice. I'm from the Midwest and the Chinese food i grew up with was usually deep fried and covered with gravy. I have spent YEARS being disappointed by the LA version of Egg Foo Young consisting of a dry egg omelette with peas and carrots. I was recently introduced to Kim's Restaurant and they brought Shrimp Egg Foo Young with actual bean sprouts fried to spongy perfection and served with brown gravy into my life and I love them for it. I have ordered egg foo young from this place 10 times and expect to order it a minimum of 10 more. The other menu item I highly recommend are the shrimp egg rolls. The only caveat about these items is they don't clean the baby shrimp. If you're the type to get the ick from seeing a line in the shrimp then this is not the place for you. I'm giving this place 5 stars ONLY for the two items I like. I can't recommend anything else I've ordered because there's nothing I would reorder. read more

Wow. I grew up in Vancouver, which has absolutely incredible Chinese food. I was transported back to childhood ordering takeout from this spot. I can't describe how perfect this place is. The portions are incredible, the walnut shrimp is crisp and creamy, the orange chicken was both sweet but pleasantly tart, the chow mein was phenomenal. I didn't have any but my husband LOVES pork fried rice and kept going back for more. If you want to be like the main character of a 90s movie with leftovers from the iconic containers for DAYS... order from here. Even the fortune cookies they give you transported me back. Careful at this place. Their food could be acceptable on one day and vomit worthy the next. I experienced both. I went back there after boycotting them, in my own way, by not spending my money there, for approaching 4 years. It was a hit and miss. God bless food sellers to step up their game and stop taking advantage of the public. I quit, again. The quality of their food should be consistently good, not good one day and bad the next. Kim's is a Chinese takeout restaurant in the Crenshaw-Baldwin Hills neighborhood. I was missing the tasty Chinese food back home in Baltimore and was looking for a delicious Cantonese takeout in the area. And Kim's was the first click on my Yelp page. I scanned the menu, looking for anything familiar. Instead of lo mein, there was chow mein. Now went here twice, so I'll describe both entrees. During the first visit, I got the beef chow mein. It was pretty good- nothing extraordinary- sliced beef, noodles, onion and a bit of cabbage if I'm not mistaken. I did add a bit of my own seasonings when I got home, but no complaints. The second time I went, I tried the combination of shrimp chow mein with a side of fried rice. It came with a little shrimp roll. This time around, I was a bit disappointed. Everything was a bit on the oily side, and lacked ALOT of flavor, which is the best way to explain it all. The egg roll was a bit spongy/greasy. The chow mein wasn't as good as the first time and the rice that came with the meal was so BORING! Literally fried rice with a bit of onion. No bean sprouts, no egg...barely any soy sauce! It was kind of sad because the portions are pretty large. I think that was the first time that I can remember in recent history that I didn't finish all of my Chinese food- that's saying quite a bit because I love Chinese food. I believe LA/Cali is known for their Thai restaurants, not so much their Chinese restaurants. And that's okay! The business seems to do pretty well & it just probably wasn't what I was used to. If you're not from the area and were looking for the restaurant on the main street, you'd probably overlook it. It sits behind the Eddie's and York & Orleans restaurants. If you parked on the back end of the restaurant, you'd see it much better. On the backside, it's a walk up kind of deal. The owners do well to limit customer and worker interaction (for Covid purposes, I'm assuming). You can walk into the front part, and even sit inside. It was neat and quiet from what I remember. If you're in the neighborhood, try them out. I gave them three solid stars because the food wasn't terrible, it was just under seasoned, a little oily and a bit boring. read more
