I was incredibly delighted when I found out about Kim's On the Go and visited on my second full day in Boulder even though I had to hike over a mile through the sprawling UC Boulder campus to get there on a very sunny day. It's tucked away a few doors down from the Walgreens, so I nearly missed it, but I was so happy to be greeted by the owner. I ordered in Vietnamese and she happily took my order down - one bun cha gio/eggroll with noodles - which I love eating on a hot day. I had a small chat with her in Vietnamese. She asked how long I had been here and I told her that I arrived a few days ago and that I was in Boulder for fun because my husband was on a work trip here. She laughed and told me that of course I should be having fun as my husband works and then let me know that my order would be done soon. I had to wait quite a while -- probably 30 minutes -- for my order to be done. It was 1:30 PM, but the restaurant had so many to-go orders to take care of before they could even start on my dish. The owner apologized to me at one point and I told her it wasn't a worry at all. It was interesting observing the other customers that would come and visit, including a young man that seemed very close to the owner. He had come for a bite to eat but noticed one of the tables was wobbling so he told the owner he was leaving his belongings there but he'd come right back. He did come back, but he came back with a screwdriver and tightened the screw on the loose table and went to fix other tables in the restaurant that were a bit loose. Later, I overheard him thanking the owners in Vietnamese, which I found lovely. It's wonderful that the owners have such a great relationship with their customers that some would even go out of their way to learn to say "Thank you" in their native language. I didn't get my food until 2 PM, and the owner was incredibly apologetic. She served me my food and said she hoped I was still hungry and wanted to eat. I was very hungry and was happy to eat, and it was delicious. The noodles were still warm after just being cooked and the eggrolls were cut into pieces and steaming hot. They didn't skimp on making the eggrolls -- they were stuffed with meat and noodles instead of mostly veggies the way other restaurants sometimes make them -- and fried so that the wrapper was nice and crispy. I drizzled some of the nuoc mam on, which helped the dish from becoming too dry, but also gave the dish an extra dose of sweet and fishy flavor. I was so full afterward, I wasn't able to eat dinner that night. The whole meal had only cost me less than $15. What a steal! I enjoyed eating here even if the wait was long. I would have loved taking my husband here because he loves Vietnamese food and the staff was so warm and kind. They seemed to have a good relationship with everyone that visited. As I was leaving, the owner and chef asked how my food was and I assured them it was very delicious. I hope I get to visit again some day! read more

Choose Kim's! Located in a tight plaza with plenty other Boulder staples (Santiago's, Cosmo's, etc.) so parking is tight but everything is good so it's popular. Walk if you can. I got the egg/pork meat Banh Mi (#27). At first, I was super turned off because the menu prices went up from the Yelp photos by like 2 bucks. And they weren't speaking Vietnamese so I was wondering how authentic is was. I paid cash and she even rounded up to the next dollar which seemed excessive for what tax really would have added, not sure how accurate that could have been. Then she said it would be 15 minutes and I've never waited that long before a Banh Mi before. Maybe I was irritated bc I was starving. Anyway, finally got the food and it was absolutely amazing. I seek banh mi all over Colorado, denver and la and this one def tops those other options! They don't use a typical baguette, they found another bakery and it was super fresh! I remember really liking the food at Kim's when I was in college. I don't know if my palate is more refined now (probably not), or if the quality has slipped, but my most recent visit wasn't great. Back in my day you could order a ton of pretty delicious food for $5. Now everything is $6.50-7.00 and not really worth it. I ordered the sesame chicken and my husband ordered chicken with garlic sauce. We waited 29 minutes at a table on their tiny 3-table patio for our food. We were the only people waiting. I used to come here and get food in under 10 minutes when it was busy. So I don't know what's up with that. Anyway my chicken was scalding hot and smushy. The sauce lacked any flavor whatsoever. Maybe it would have been crispy if the sauce was ordered on the side, but the breading was just redonk thick. My husband's chicken was better, but pretty much just chicken stir fried in a brown sauce. So a 30 minute wait for "just okay" food? That won't be happening again. read more

I was in a gluttonous mood and decided to grab a banh mi. They were a little pricier than I was used to but far from unreasonable. I had the pork meat roll and pate banh mi. I was super impressed when they handed me a large, warm bundle of deliciousness. The bun was bursting with fillings and had been toasted with buttery goodness. The pork meat roll was pretty standard, but the pate was clearly homemade. The pickles were perfect and really helped to cut the richness. I had asked for it to be spicy, but there wasn't much kick to it. It was still super tasty and very fresh. The owners of this place are incredibly nice. They do not speak any English but still are extremely courteous towards customers and open to requests. One time they accidently overcharged me on my card and I didnt realize, just to have them call me over and hand me cash as they realized the mistake. Don't be led astray by claims of amazing banh mi, the offering here is nothing special and probably worth avoiding. Massive, goofy ass bun smothered in wok fried, heavily breaded pork and then absolutely covered with mediocre pickles/veggies. Listen up, Boulder-area bahn mi addicts! Kim Food To Go just added banh mi to their menu. You can choose from four different kinds for $4.99. So, are they any good? Sadly, not really. It's too mayo-ey, there aren't any jalapeños, the carrots and daikon aren't really pickled, and the meat's pretty tough. BUT - it's there, and if you're feeling really lazy while on the Hill and have a mean craving for some banh mi, you could definitely do worse. The bread is pretty good and there is at least a ghost of that addictive flavor combination that's so unique to these sandwiches. I got a Bahn mi sandwich a few years ago and thought it was alright and decided to get to give them another shot. Their menu look more like generic Americanized Chinese food than I remembered. I ordered shrimp fried rice and the Schezwan beef. The shrimp smelled strongly like ammonia, like they expired a while ago. I had to throw the shrimp fried rice out. The Schezwan beef was flavor less and didn't even slightly resemble Schezwan food. It had large chucks of raw bell pepper in it. At least it was edible. Stay away from this place, your stomach will thank you. read more

The pho is INEDIBLE. The broth tasted as if they had cleaned the bathroom floor and used the dirty water. Adding sriracha and sauces didn't even mask the flavor of toilet water. Aside from tasting absolutely awful, the steak was shriveled, looked like dog food when traditionally, it comes raw and cooks in the broth. The crab-cream cheese wontons we're flavorless and mostly cream cheese. We couldn't eat any of it, threw it out and ended up getting pizza... that says something. Now, the BEST item on the menu (in my opinion) is the last thing I would EVER expect to find here. The doner kebap. A turkish street snack consisting of a pita stuffed with lamb meat, lettuce, cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes and onions. Get the spicy garlic sauce. They offer 2 sizes, the $3 and $4. I recommend the $3 doner kebap, the pita bread is much softer than the $4. Hell, try them both and get back to me on your personal preference. I occassionally will drive an hour up to Boulder just for a few of these heavenly pitas. WELL worth the drive. read more

I've been going to Kim's for about 10 years because of their $4.00 lunch menu and $1 Shrimp Spring Rolls. With Kim's, you get what you pay for with most dishes but there are a few standout dishes where you get more then your monies worth. I've read the reviews and they're right. Kim's dishes started to lose some of their appeal mid last year because of a staffing change. It's a family business and they've gone back to the original family line up this month and I've already noticed an improvement to their meals. Meats are cooked and seasoned just right, shrimp has returned to their spring rolls, and they've started adding more vegetables to their dishes. Some of the dishes I like are the grilled chicken, BBQ Beef, BBQ Pork, Donor Kabob, Tofu Lo Mein and their Pho dishes. I've had better versions of the Beef Broccoli and Cashew Chicken at other places but again, considering the price, it's not bad food. Prices: In that 10 year span, the prices are the same with the exception of $2.00 shrimp spring rolls and some lunch entries are now $4.50. I don't think you can argue with kinda price change; considering their lunch is the same price as a uppity coffee drink @ the bucks. read more

They give you good portions, great food, and at an excellent price!!!
