We visited in February during a stretch of very cold weather, but from the moment we arrived, we were welcomed with warm refreshments like hot tea and cocoa. The hospitality was exceptional throughout. The location is also ideal. It was about an eight-minute walk to the theatre and despite the chilly temperatures, we were able to walk to several nearby spots. The hotel features a few bars and a rooftop restaurant, which added to the experience. I especially loved the many cute, cozy seating areas throughout the property--perfect for chatting, relaxing, or enjoying a bite before heading up to the room. Overall, a 5/5 experience. Reception was very kind and helpful. The decor of the room itself is very confusing. There was artwork next to the toilet of a garlic bulb (which looks a lot like an onion) and the words "Keep calm it's just garlic". What a weird thing to have in the bathroom?! I had a great stay at this hotel while in Chicago for a work trip. The building was originally an office building which isn't surprising, based on the amount of elevators. While I didn't interact with the staff too much, check in was easy breezy and the front desk was cheerful. Beds were comfy and I love that Kimpton hotels have a yoga mat in each room. They also provide robes for your stay. Bathroom is all in one - meaning the commode is in the same room as the shower. I just wish the bathroom had a tub instead of the stand up shower with the half glass door. I do my best but I always manage to get water on the floor. Only thing that wasn't great about this place was parking and the view! You are treated really well by the staff, from having the door opened when you walk in, to check and check out. Staff was really well trained! The room was really nice. The bed was comfortable and I loved the bathroom and showers. As far as the view... my room had none! Only the wall of the apartment building a few feet away. (I'm sure the other side of the hotel was better!). There was also a lot of noise outside when they rolled and emptied all the large garbage bins (at 10:30pm?) Hotel self parking is a couple of blocks away for $63 per night. You do get in and out capabilities if you pay at the hotel. Super clean and quiet. Didn't hear any hallway noise or "room next door" noise either. read more

Beautiful historic building with nice ambience. This hotel is part of Amex hotel collection as well as chase edit, so if you book through those programs you get extra bonuses. I booked through csr edit, received a nice room upgrade to a larger king. Also received f/b credit which can be used at the three onsite restaurants/lounges. Daily wine hour reception and daily morning free coffee is a nice touch. There are also other amenities like yoga and fitness gear as I think bills rental, but I didn't get a chance to utilize those benefits. Staff were friendly and helpful. Location is a bit quiet which is good but also need to be aware when walking back alone at night. It's an IHG hotel so you will receive member benefits and accumulate points as well. read more

Wow! That's all I can say! But, I'm going to find the words to say more, because this hotel and its great staff deserve it! I booked this hotel a while ago for my husband's surprise birthday vacation. It was a total of 6 of us, I love IHG! This one is definitely 1 of the top locations that I've visited in the past 15 to 20 years. I'm talking conveniently easy to locate, and very kind staff. Everyone, from the door person to registration staff, to the cleaning staff was so courteous all the time! They speak when they see you. They hold doors, and they answer questions! Our first great experience was with Shay and Andrew. We arrived a little early, a little too early to check in, and was told that they sold out the previous evening, and there would be a wait to check in. These 2 individuals were very helpful with allowing us to store our luggage and provided great recommendations for things to do while we await our room. Their enthusiasm and personality were top-tier. And to be honest, they looked great! They were the perfect representation of what I want to see when visiting a business. This dynamic duo spoke very well, provided great professional, genuine, kind service. These guys are gems! Management, make sure these two get anything they want and everything they deserve to keep them representing IHG. I've written so much about the staff, I forgot to mention the décor during my stay! The décor was amazing! It was like, Wakanda meets feminism! You'll see the pictures w this review. The décor, and furniture were beautiful, and it smelled great in there. The rooms... chef's kiss! I've never used chef's kiss to describe a hotel. Very friendly doorwoman and staff at the front desk. Had a nice little conversation with them about Bill Kimpton (RIP king)! Huge, bright, and clean hotel. Lots of meeting rooms, a ballroom and fitness room, and areas to hang out around the lobby, including a cute cart filled with kids toys/crayons/board games. We stayed in a spacious King bed room -- the restroom was so pretty. I love Kimpton hotels because they all always have cool tile work and wallpaper throughout. Love the location too as we were in the middle of a lot of cultural institutions and restaurants. Stopped at their bar for a drink and some oysters. I appreciate how many seafood options they have. Huge cocktail/liquor menu along with a couple of uncommon beers. We got 12 oysters (Pink Moon), a Leffe beer, and some kind of gin cocktail. Reallly tasty stuff. Very sweet of them to split them up into a platter of 6 each for us. Only complaint is that they should put way less mignonette and cocktail sauce in their respective cups as it's a big waste of both (although I'm sure there are oddballs adding heaping spoonfuls to mask any oyster flavor...) I was also a huge fan of their current art installation by Thomas Rogati -- cyberpunk style + all of the pieces are for sale with prices listed! Vesna is the best! She made our trip to Chicago start off with amazing vibes. After a hectic red eye where I lost my wallet on the plane, the only thing we wanted was to get to the hotel and relax, and Vesna made that happen!!! Visited Kimpton Gray in August for two nights with my son. From the moment we arrived to the moment we left, the service was incredible. We were immediately greeted by Nick when we arrived and he made check in a breeze. The welcome water bottles and print out on local restaurants / key facts are a nice touch. He took the time to explain the amenities - social hour, morning coffee, etc. - and was so welcoming and friendly. The rooms are quite large and the beds are so comfortable! Location can't be beat - a quick walk to Millennium Park or the Riverwalk and the train station is just a block away. We opted for the room rate that includes valet parking with in/out privileges especially since parking in Chicago is so expensive. Since it's October most patios are closed so we had a hard time finding dog friendly restaurants too. Assuming that the Kimpton was dog friendly we were unable to take him to any restaurants within the hotel. Such a miss for us. Since we had to stay in our room we asked for a dog bed and bowls. This is complimentary for your stay. I called the front desk and it took over 1 hour. I had to go down and get them myself and the front desk told me they forgot. read more

The button on the phone that should have been direct dial just resulted in a fast busy signal. When I called the front desk they said they'd transfer me but disconnected me. And there are no menus in the room. Ugh. So I opted to just walk downstairs and get takeout. Waited a good long while to be acknowledged and while waiting another hotel customer came looking for her room service order that was never delivered. I booked this hotel for my girlfriend's birthday as she loves Chicago. While I could have booked another hotel with a city view, something drew me to this hotel. I think it was because I booked a Kimpton hotel in New Orleans during a road trip where we brought her dog since they're pet friendly. The hotels have this boutique and intimidate feeling to them. If this is what they're truly marketing themselves at, forgive me as I'm not a hotel connoisseur. I booked the hotel about a month in advance using the American Express travel portal. This particular one was included in The Hotel Collection and also had a deal for a free night included in the price. My card allows me a late check in, complimentary upgrade (if available), and a late check out (if available). I'll get to these points in a bit. I messaged the hotel in the Amex travel portal to ask if they had anything to make our stay special for my girlfriend's birthday, to which they said they noted in our stay. Our flight was set to arrive around 9:45pm local time, but ended up being 2 hours late. We arrived at the hotel and I ask the gentleman if there would be any issues with checking in this late, to which he said no since I had noted a late check-in. He gave me 2 pages that gave us information on the restaurant/bar/lounge they have on site, as well as benefits from booking through the Amex travel portal. We were on our way to our room in less than 10 minutes! I had originally booked the Premium Room with a Walk-in Shower (King Bed), but we ended up getting upgraded to the Premium Room with a Deep Soaking Tub (King Bed) on the 6th floor, nice! Once inside, we found a plate of dessert bites with a note. The room was very nice, clean and spacious! Room service came every day, which was a delight since we'd go out exploring every day and come back to a refreshed room. The location is very close to public transportation and to local attractions, which was a plus. Overall, we enjoyed our stay. As far as the special request for a birthday occasion, I can't say if we got something complimentary since it wasn't explicitly mentioned (upgrade was requested if possible, but also came as a perk via my card), since I recall reading reviews where they got champagne and chocolates for an anniversary. A couple things to note: The front desk is on the 2nd floor, there will be a sign at the main entrance stating that. You can either walk up the stairs where the sign is or take the elevator. They have a fitness room that seemed quite empty (which is good for those that prefer it like myself) and a spa room where you can book in advance (at least 24 hours, we couldn't get one last minute, but they did try to accommodate us with a booking at a nearby partner location). Both are at the far end of the 2nd floor. Behind the front desk is a seating area with great artwork and plenty of seating. We booked the Kimpton Gray through Delta Vacations. It's a little fancier of a hotel than we would have likely paid for if it wasn't part of a deal. We stayed for two nights and had a rental car. Valet cost $80+ a day which is pretty steep, but the only other option they provided for self-park wasn't much cheaper. Although it was cold (and actually snowing) we were still able to get around most places by foot, once we'd had the car parked for the night... and the umbrella they provided in the room came in really handy. Retrieving the car was pretty easy and relatively quick. The room itself was comfortable with a large wardrobe where you could both hang items and put things away in small drawers. As other reviewers have noted, the layout was more form than function. It was really hard to stay warm while in the standup shower because it wasn't fully enclosed and the water pressure was low; and water tended to get all over the floor. We had a king bed which was firm but comfortable with a few different pillow options. Only one of the nightstands had drawers and it would have been nice if both did. I appreciated the blackout curtains but the space above the curtains still let quite a bit of light come through. There's a Starbucks at the bottom of the building so while we didn't NEED coffee it seemed strange that you had to request a coffee maker and it wasn't automatically provided. It was not easy to cast onto the TV from a mobile device or plug in a Fire stick so we ended up watching our streaming services on an iPad. Also nice that they provided bathrobes but they were a bit worn and stiff. On the plus side, housekeeping did a great job and all of the staff with whom we interacted were very welcoming and professional. Overall, we had a nice stay here, but a few small details that keep it from being a five star for me. read more

Date of stay: February 2 - 3, 2024 Room #: 805 I was looking for a decent hotel in walking distance of the United Center for the Madonna concert, but when that didn't pan out I extended my search further and found this little gem! The Gray is a wonderful hotel that I would recommend to anyone staying in Chicago. The proximity to Stare Street shopping and the subway were big selling points, too. The entire visit was wonderful, from the welcoming valet staff to the Front Desk folks at check out. Check in was painless with Josh getting us to a room quickly and painlessly. Front Desk staff in the morning handled check out efficiently and arranged for our luggage to be held while we did some local shopping. The room was wonderful: quiet, spacious, and with great toiletries. While overall a bit narrow, the space was appointed very well. The bath products were exceptional and featured the largest to go bottles of soap and lotion I've ever seen in any hotel I have visited. What a great experience, and one night staycation in the city me, and my boyfriend had at this hotel. I was pleased that it is associated with IHG rewards. We didn't go for any of the upgrades because we were on a budget but it felt like we got the best for our money. We got 2 free waters during check-in along with a voucher for a beer, wine, or Prosecco & 10% of dinner at their rooftop restaurant. The front desk agent was very welcoming and helped us figure out what there was to do around the city since the place we had planned to go was closed. Side note- I think it's cool that this hotel is pet friendly! The front desk person was saying that the most exotic pet they've hosted is ducks. I was very pleased with the room itself and it was exactly what I expected. We didn't upgrade for more space in the King room which was fine for one night- I would suggest upgrading if you're staying for more than 2 nights. Since we only stayed one night, I can't comment on the housekeeping. The shower handle was a nice placement so you don't have to walk in and be surprised by the water. However the water was a little finicky- super hot or cold- had to play around to get it just right. I loved that there was liquid soap and not bar (just a personal preference). My only other complaint was that the TV wasn't a smart TV and didn't have an option to chrome cast- luckily we just spent our time off our screens and went up to the bat to use our drink vouchers. I really enjoyed the text feature. Instead of using the hotel phone I just texted about questions for breakfast and requesting a coffee machine. My boyfriend was happy that it was a Keurig. The equipment in the gym was nice and there were 4 treadmills, 4 peloton bikes, a free weight section w dumbells and a bench, 4 yoga mats (+ yoga block & medicine ball) some machines like chest press, leg press & ellipticals. I was pleased with my experience and had a great workout! We tried to eat at the Fillmore for brunch and went down at 1pm. We were told the kitchen was closing early and I wish they wouldn't told me that the night before when I asked about breakfast and we wouldn't planned accordingly. This would've make me take off a star but I didn't since they just suggested we walk around the corner to their sister restaurant in the Hyatt Centric "Bandol" which was the same vibe, more space, and maybe even better food, so I was pleased. read more

But I also had IHG status, so that got me an upgrade to a suite, so when I walked into the room, I was like "oh dang..." (in a good way). I mean, there were two TVs. The hotel is located in a prime location good center spot to walk to the shops, theater and a lot of restaurants. The bed was very comfy with black light curtains. The ac was very good too. The only thing some of the furniture was scuff and there was a few stains in the bathroom. I had an amazing stay at the Kimpton Grey Hotel. From the time I checked in which was in a mid-afternoon to even check out. Vesna checked me in and was very friendly and even explained the amenities that the hotel has along with pointing out the gym. The only thing that I did not like was when I was ironing my shirt there was residue on the iron which burnt my shirt. When I called down to the front desk and waited for about 44 minutes for an iron. Walked my iron downstairs to the front desk and Sandy got a person to bring me another iron and steamer. Good thing I packed extra shirts. The gym was always clean and the peppermint-smelling towels were amazing. Upon checking out Shea did an amazing job and asked me about my whole stay. He even set us up with a place to hold my luggage since my flight was later in the day. All in all the stay was very pleasant and the staff was amazing. read more

I stayed here for my first visit to Chicago and I was nervous staying in the downtown area, but this place totally blew me away! I checked in around noon, expecting to wait, but my room was ready for me. The staff were very helpful and attentive. I had a suite and the room was so clean and absolutely lovely! The bathroom with the soaking tub was just what I needed after a long flight. I am a light sleeper and was nervous that there would be a lot of noise from the street below, but it was silent at night and I was very well rested. The location was great for getting to all the tourist spots. The Art Institute and Millennium Park were only a 10 minute walk away. We were close to some great restaurants and coffee shops too. Maybe they don't do that anymore? The check-in is on 2nd floor. If you are light on luggage its up the blue stairs then to your right. Very friendly and informative front desk staff. Hotel interior is beautiful btw. It certainly has a sense of class! My room was a king studio suite with a deep soaking tub. It was a corner room with lots of windows. The Fillmore restaurant downstairs was the only one open during our stay so we ate there twice. Aaron was the best server. Worked alone most of the time and took everything in stride. It's super rare to find a 'perfect' hotel but I think I found one after staying here! From start to finish we had an amazing stay. The staff greeted us with a welcome letter and candy in our room. It was such a lovely and welcoming touch. Throughout our stay we kept finding more and more gems about this hotel such as their complimentary happy hour. From 5-6 every night they have white and red wine as well as a spiked apple cider for the holidays. I even woke up this morning to a hot chocolate bar downstairs. There is a rooftop eatery, a restaurant downstairs, and a bar downstairs as well. As others have mentioned it is super close to different restaurants and activities. Another thing that made this stay so much more relaxing is that they provided us with absolutely everything we needed and even forgot at home. They have umbrellas and other necessities that the staff goes above and beyond to get for you. The hotel itself was clean and comfortable. Booked this hotel in the heart of the Loop of downtown Chicago as it was within walking distance of my office (flew in from out of town) and also with the other attractions! This was my first time in Chicago and staying at this hotel was a great experience. I ended up landing around late afternoon then joined my coworkers for dinner and didn't check in until around 9pm! The front desk was so quick, nice and extremely accommodating. I booked the standard two Queen bed rooms and it was so spacious and clean! They also include a lot of amenities in the room such as bath soap (Atelier Bloem), lotion, dryers and even an umbrella (which I ended up using for one of the days)! The shower was uniquely spacious and had no door (the shower handle to turn on the water was at the entrance instead of below the shower head which was a nice touch), soft close toilet lids and the bathroom had a sliding door which gave the accommodations so much character. There is also a gym which was very clean and air was well circulated. One thing to note was that they had more cardio machines than weights - but given I was traveling, I wasn't exactly planning to do my usual workout sessions when there were so many parts of the city to explore. Transparently, most of my time in the city was spent outside of the hotel room but the very consistent housekeeping services, wonderful room and beautiful front lobby was all I could ask for! There are even staff at the front door who would open the door for you. I didn't get the chance to try out the Fillmore which was one of the main restaurants in the lobby area. P I didn't use any ride sharing services at all during my trip since everywhere was so walkable! 10 mins to the Willis (Sears) Tower, 10 mins to the Millenium Park (the Bean!), a half hour walk to Navy Pier and many intersecting streets that lead to the River Walk! Lots of great eatery in the area too (if you look at my past reviews, all the eateries in Chicago were all walking distance). I'm glad I selected Kimpton Gray for my Chicago trip and would not hesitate recommending this place to anyone I know! read more

Edwin is the charmer who met we when I came and out my suitcase in the taxi. What a perfect representative of this well priced hotel. The rooms are clean. The sheets a tad stiff but extra pillows and robe in the room makes up for it. The entrance is on the second floor but plenty of elevators to get you there. No minibar but snacks and beverages are readily available in the lobby with free Cooper and teas in the morning and wine in the evening. My room was a bit dark but the artistic lamps light up the space beautifully. Don't forget to make a stop off at the sought after Vol 39 bar for an app and a beverage. But be sure to make a Rez!!! read more

I live in Chicago and recommend the Kimpton Gray Hotel to all of my friends and family that come into town. I've had the pleasure of staying at the Kimpton Gray twice now and both times were phenomenal from start to finish. From the extremely friendly staff to the clean rooms, you can not go wrong with the Kimpton. Also an amazing bonus is that you can bring your dog, no matter the size or breed (as a large breed dog mama I love this!). I also love the beautiful interior of the hotel and the art that they have hanging throughout the hallways. You also will want to check out their bar and restaurant as both are great. What a lovely oasis in the middle of the city! They seem to have thought of everything - comfy beds and robes, dog treats in the lobby, and a complimentary happy hour. It's got a sleek vibe with a little twist - think modern art, great toiletries, and friendly staff. We had my daughters wedding reception at the Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago in October 2025. It was awesome! I can't say enough good things about our experience. Starting with Gloria at the valet desk, Mariah the hotel wedding coordinator, Chef Katia, Sini head wait staff, Luke the bartender at Volume 39 and countless others. They all went above and beyond to help make the wedding reception and our stay there perfect. When I think about how much money we spent on the reception, in the end, having a wedding there, and having the people who work there help out, it was more than worth it! The last time I stayed at the Gray was also my first, mere weeks before a pandemic would seize the planet. This hotel made a strong first impression, so I was curious and a bit apprehensive how the intervening challenges have changed it. Well, the Gray has lost some of its shine for me, but it's still a place I'll be looking forward to returning to. I didn't receive an upgrade this time, but I still enjoyed the well-designed whimsy of the smaller room on a higher floor. The room was quiet, the bed so comfortable that I was reluctant to climb out of it. Gone is the wine hour, replaced by a bar ticket at Boleo for "beer, wine, or prosecco." This change appears to be recent, not pandemic related, and it encourages the isolation typically associated with hotel stays. Apparently, so many guests have been choosing prosecco that they ran out and had been substituting champagne, which was fine with me. The music at Boleo wasn't so fine to my ears, so the staff let me sit in the anteroom to sip at my leisure. Housekeeping seemed a little inattentive. Unlike my previous stay, this one had no treat awaiting me, though I did receive 600 points as my "welcome amenity," and the IHG membership waters were Acqua Panna. Alas, when I went to chill them, I discovered a half-drunk Nestlé water in the unplugged fridge. Likewise, a previous guest had left the sash of their Kimpton robe on the handle of bathroom barn door. However, housekeeping also responded with alacrity when I requested a teakettle, which arrived on a tray with Rishi teas, mugs, and accoutrements. The tray was grimy along the edge, though, and let's not even talk about the non-dairy creamer. read more

Had some expiring points so we picked this hotel for our last min trip to Chicago. Room and hotel were okay. Good location. The one star off is because 2 out of my 3 interactions with the front desk team were meh, for a 4-star hotel standard. They were both cold, don't look up that often to know who was in line first, didn't offer anything that came with my IHG status until I asked for it. Not sure everybody who stayed free using their IHG points got the same cold treatment as we did. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, the valet/door team was the shining star! Every single one of the front door team was always so kind and welcoming when we walked in and out their door. Anyhow, keep up the awesome work front door team! We probably won't be back unless we have expiring IHG points again and Chicago is the only option to use those points. read more

My hubby surprised me with a little overnight stay in the city. This hotel is so so gorgeous. Marble stairwells, gold fixtures, original doors still remain in this historic building. The style is an Art Deco with some mid century twists. Our room was a suite, and just amazing. Stylish, clean, comfortable and spacious. Front check in was easy and the concierge was incredibly friendly and so helpful. The entire staff was very friendly and it is very obvious they appreciate and love telling the story behind the history of the property. read more

First of all, this place is beautiful, and it had the absolute coolest lobby/study area. It made me wish I had something to work on just so I could look as important as everyone else using it. Bedrooms are also 100% slay with a barnstyle sliding door on the bathroom. The feeling of sliding it shut and hearing that 'click' at the end was indescribable - hours of fun. I also "accidentally" rode the service elevator to the top floor kitchen and met the nicest human ever. His name was Jose and he helped me find my way back to where I was supposed to be. Def go here if you want to look cool while studying, stay in gorgeous rooms with cool moon-like lamps, and/or want to meet nice service staff. My only complaint was the cheesy bathroom print featured in the pictures which was genuinely a bummer for me Update: oddly good elevator music read more

Beautiful hotel, great location. This hotel and their staff ruined my trip by taking over $1000 from me before I even stepped foot in my room. We pre-paid for our room. Once we checked in they charged $300 for incidentals and the charges just kept on coming after that, I ended up having to freeze my credit card. There were lots of excuses before any accountability was taken. Very frustrating situation. I spoke with two managers and a customer service representative at the desk. I was offered free breakfast for the inconvenience but they were unable the reverse the charges. I asked to have a night comped due to the inconvenience and they were amenable. I was also given points, although this has left such an awful taste in my mouth in regards to IGH. read more
