Had some expiring points so we picked this hotel for our last min trip to Chicago. Room and hotel were okay. Good location. The one star off is because 2 out of my 3 interactions with the front desk team were meh, for a 4-star hotel standard. They were both cold, don't look up that often to know who was in line first, didn't offer anything that came with my IHG status until I asked for it. Not sure everybody who stayed free using their IHG points got the same cold treatment as we did. ON THE BRIGHT SIDE, the valet/door team was the shining star! Every single one of the front door team was always so kind and welcoming when we walked in and out their door. Anyhow, keep up the awesome work front door team! We probably won't be back unless we have expiring IHG points again and Chicago is the only option to use those points. read more

My hubby surprised me with a little overnight stay in the city. This hotel is so so gorgeous. Marble stairwells, gold fixtures, original doors still remain in this historic building. The style is an Art Deco with some mid century twists. Our room was a suite, and just amazing. Stylish, clean, comfortable and spacious. Front check in was easy and the concierge was incredibly friendly and so helpful. The entire staff was very friendly and it is very obvious they appreciate and love telling the story behind the history of the property. read more

We had my daughters wedding reception at the Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago in October 2025. It was awesome! I can't say enough good things about our experience. Starting with Gloria at the valet desk, Mariah the hotel wedding coordinator, Chef Katia, Sini head wait staff, Luke the bartender at Volume 39 and countless others. They all went above and beyond to help make the wedding reception and our stay there perfect. When I think about how much money we spent on the reception, in the end, having a wedding there, and having the people who work there help out, it was more than worth it! I highly recommend Kimpton Gray Hotel Chicago. Matthew S. read more

First of all, this place is beautiful, and it had the absolute coolest lobby/study area. It made me wish I had something to work on just so I could look as important as everyone else using it. Bedrooms are also 100% slay with a barnstyle sliding door on the bathroom. The feeling of sliding it shut and hearing that 'click' at the end was indescribable - hours of fun. I also "accidentally" rode the service elevator to the top floor kitchen and met the nicest human ever. His name was Jose and he helped me find my way back to where I was supposed to be. Def go here if you want to look cool while studying, stay in gorgeous rooms with cool moon-like lamps, and/or want to meet nice service staff. My only complaint was the cheesy bathroom print featured in the pictures which was genuinely a bummer for me Update: oddly good elevator music read more

Stayed here in 2020 and it was a really nice experience despite COVID. Haha. The room was beautiful and the staff and service were amazing.

Beautiful hotel, great location. This hotel and their staff ruined my trip by taking over $1000 from me before I even stepped foot in my room. We pre-paid for our room. Once we checked in they charged $300 for incidentals and the charges just kept on coming after that, I ended up having to freeze my credit card. There were lots of excuses before any accountability was taken. Very frustrating situation. I spoke with two managers and a customer service representative at the desk. I was offered free breakfast for the inconvenience but they were unable the reverse the charges. I asked to have a night comped due to the inconvenience and they were amenable. I was also given points, although this has left such an awful taste in my mouth in regards to IGH. read more

I stayed here for a company event that lasted a week. The staff at the Kimpton go above and beyond to accommodate your stay. The bar (Vol. 39) is excellent. The accommodations are decent. They do provide you with a refrigerator, however, the microwave is upon request. The stars removed are due to the fact that the Kimpton has a restaurant on the first floor that is, "tied to them" but not owned by them. The failures of this restaurant (The Fillmore) reflects poorly on the Kimpton. The accounting at the Kimpton couldn't resolve a simple request. I dined with a colleague and asked for the bill to be charged to my room. Ironically, she had a charges to her room as well, as I did, though we dined together. Trying to resolve the discrepancy turned into a nightmare being transferred from the Kimpton, The Fillmore, The Kimpton, the Kimpton accounting. Seriously? Neither the Kimpton or the Fillmore was able to resolve this issue. It's $70, not that much money. I consider it a cost of poor customer service where the two business don't want to take responsibility. Nonetheless, decent hotel with good customer service. But once you check out, the customer service went out the door! read more

This is a really fantastic hotel! It's totally unassuming on the outside and when you walk in, it's sooo beautiful! The floors almost sparkle in the elevator lobby areas. The great service starts when you walk in the entrance, continues at check in, and lasts through the stay. I had a pretty basic room since I was using points - but the room was clean, roomy and comfortable! My ONLY complaint was that the shower curtain reeked of mildew. But that aside, I loved the entire vibe here and I will absolutely be back!! read more

Decent stay for our 4 night long weekend girl's trip. Room was quite spacious but the shower needs updating- low pressure and small shower head, didn't cover much spray area. Service is pretty good. All front desk personnel were cheerful and very hospitable. Shay (spelling) went above and beyond to make my stay as comfortable as possible. I needed a mailing stamp and he was able to provide me some! Thanks, Shay! Overall, I'd recommend the hotel. It's beautiful and in a nice spot of downtown- nothing too crazy with homelessness/ traffic. read more

Kimpton Gray Hotel - Lounge area on level 2 around the corner of lobby - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Was there for work so did not take any photos sadly, however, I really enjoyed my stay. The staff was always kind and helpful. Room was beautiful and pretty quiet considering my window was facing downtown. Businesses around there are mostly closed after 5pm from what concierge told me. The ice situation isn't great. It's in a freezer with small bagged, large chunk ice vs an ice machine. Prob more sanitary but the ice freezes together in those bags making it hard to use for drinks etc. only recommendation for the place is get a nugget ice machine :) read more

Stellar overall experience. My first stay at a Kimpton property was in Cleveland (which was one of my best hotel stays ever); when I was browsing to stay in downtown Chicago I had hoped the Kimpton Gray could deliver a similar experience. It certainly did! The building has lovely historic character and I think they succeeded in tastefully integrating modern upgrades without detracting from the inherent elegance of the space. The lobby and entrance were stunningly clad in cool white marble, original bronze fixtures - but with swanky new furniture and upgrades. The staff was very attentive in checking bags at the end of my stay, allowing for late check-out and overall being pleasant and accommodating. Warning: parking is astronomically expensive. I ended up parking at a friend's house in the Lower West Side (a $10 Uber vs. $69 parking at hotel) - not ideal but doable to cut some costs. I got lucky and got a great rate this weekend - I will continue to look for Kimpton properties for future travel. read more

Kimpton Gray Hotel - Lover's kit! - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Honestly, truly I've loved every Kimpton I've ever stayed at however the Gray had a very classic and warm feeling to it. I was happily greeted at the front desk and allowed an early check in, which was great because this was a booking just to enjoy my birthday. The room was gorgeous, spacious, clean, and comfortable. I was impressed with the comfortability of the bed and the styling of the bathroom. I ordered room service from the restaurant associated with the hotel and it was delivered quickly and was delicious. I forgot some toiletries and the hotel staff quickly responded to and delivered my request with a smile. Sometimes in bigger cities service tends to lack but not here at The Gray: thru aims to please. read more

We just had a wonderful 4 stay at the Kimpton Gray. The rooms were very well appointed, clean, and roomy. The hotel itself is located in a very convenient location in the downtown loop area. Everything we wanted to see was an easy walk from the Kimpton Gray. We never needed to take public transport to see all the things we wanted to see. We took an Uber from Midway Airport out of convenience, but we should have just taken the Orange Metro line. It takes the same time as driving and costs a lot less. The Orange Metro line drops you off just 3 blocks from the Kimpton. At the Kimpton, we enjoyed the fitness room that is open 24/7. It has a water dispenser, towels, and fresh fruit. There are no coffee makers in the room, but coffee and tea are available in the lobby every day from 630am to 1000am. There is also free wine in the lobby from about 400pm to 600pm everyday. Because it's a 4 star hotel, there wasn't a microwave, but one was brought up to my room with no problem. Every staff member that we came across was super friendly and helpful, but extra kudos to Rika at the front desk for helping to make our first stay at the Kimpton Gray a wonderful one. Thanks to her, we will definitely be repeat guests at the Kimpton Gray on future visits to the Chicago area! read more

Kimpton Gray Hotel - Lobby - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Really enjoyed our stay here during our mini vacation in Chicago. We received text messages during the day from the hotel asking how we were doing and if we needed anything and I thought that was so unique and thoughtful. The beds were so comfy and it was peaceful and quiet all throughout our stay. The hotel staff were were helpful and friendly. Our only complaint is our experience at their rooftop bar. We came in to eat and the hostess said we could get seated at the bar but if a table opened up that we can just go grab it. However, when we found an open table and sat, we were questioned by a server as to why we were seated there and if we had reservations. The hostess then told us we couldn't sit at the table because "there are reservations" which she initially did not mention. We felt that the approach was very unfriendly, unwelcoming and unprofessional. read more

Wedding Hotel Block Review. We recently used the Kimpton Gray for our hotel block for our wedding in Chicago. We could not say enough great things about the staff and hotel! From initially working with Rebecca to set up the block, to the special touches staff added to our room the day of our wedding (dessert, champagne, hand written notes)-everything was absolutely perfect! The staff was also extremely responsive when our guests called down with questions. Two things we hope the hotel will consider changing in the future are charging for welcome bags ($3 per bag at the front desk) and providing alternative parking options ($75 for 24-hour valet). We look forward to returning to the Gray soon and will definitely be recommending it to our friends and family! read more

Stayed at this hotel about a week ago. Very nice hotel although there were barely any amenities available at the time. The restaurant and rooftop bar were both closed. This was a major inconvenience. Luckily there's a Starbucks next door. Most of the staff at the front desk were friendly. The room itself was appealing, but unfortunately there was no view because there's a tall building right in front blocking the view and I was staying on a higher floor. I loved the fact that there was a yoga mat in my room. I actually got a chance to do a little yoga during my stay. The thing I loved most was the fact it's a dog friendly hotel and my dog was able to accompany me! read more

Wedding Weekend Stay I was reluctant to write this review as I wanted to focus on the positive memories of my wedding day. However, I wanted to share my experience in case it could spare a future bride. I worked with Rebecca, the Groups Room coordinator for our guests' wedding day weekend stay. She was initially responsive, but as the weekend neared, her communication dropped off in spire of emails, phone calls, and voicemails. Ultimately, her colleague had to get a hold of her. When we finally connected with Rebecca, we provided a guest list and inquired which guests had booked rooms. She informed us she did not know, nor did she make any attempts to find out. Similarly, when asked, she did not know, nor find out, if guests received their gift bags -with expensive, personalized items - that we left at the front desk as instructed. When we called after the wedding to pick up the extra gift bags, they informed us there were none left. Overall, the hotel process was unclear, and communication was lacking, resulting in added stress during the already stressful wedding weekend. However, some staff were exceptional, including the valet, so they made up for the negative experiences. I share this not to tarnish reputations, but for you to have more information as you plan out this day, you worked so hard for. read more

City of Chicago is quite vast. Hubby and I wanted to stay in the Loop as it is central to many places and it offers easy transportaton both by "L" or by bus. We decided on Kimpton Gray Hotel as it fitted all our needs: modern updates, free wiFi, centrally located in The Loop, safe in room, refridgerator, gym, and if we forgot any amenities, they will provide it. We happen to have forgotten our slippers. They even provided that if you call and ask for some. We originally booked for a Queen suite but they generously upgraded us not only to a King but a King Spa Suite. The difference between a King vs a King Spa suite are the following: situated at the quiet corners and away from the elevators and the size of the room and the bathroom. I did not understand this until I looked at other people's photos on Yelp. The King Spa Suite's size of the bathroom is bigger, has a sunken tub and a wall separating the toilet and the sink. This offers privacy and it's astethically more pleasing to the eye. It's all the little things that make a difference. What we are most appreciate is that they have a huge space around the left side of the bed. (I am sure some rooms, it's on the right.) This is important to us because we sleep Japanese style. It's better for our backs. We had yoga mats (provided by them) and tatami sleeping mats (we brought our own). We did try their provided king sized bed but the following day, our backs weren't feeling at its best. The hotel boasts of wonderful surprises. Several include complimentary champagne and a birthday cupcake provided by Team Conceirge led by Molly and Bobby, printed museum passes, reservations for restaurants or cruises, wine "Happy Hour" from Boleo, and late night munchies for when you come back late at night and you just want a nibble. Should you want to utilize the sunken spa tub, they offer bath salt. Should it look like rain, they offer you umbrellas at no charge. Just don't lose it or you will be charged. ;-) We pretty much had everything all planned out in regards to where we wanted to go and which neighborhoods to visit. I did consult with Bobby and Molly on several occasions regarding how to better navagate and explore the city better. During our time, Metra (commuter rail) had a couple of glitches with their switching lines. My tip for future travelers is to be flexible and if you are dropped off at "X" station, just get off and explore. Chicago is a beautiful city with gorgeous street art and architecture. Thank you and special shout out goes to the Bobby, Molly and staff for their excellent knowledge of the neighborhoods and hospitality. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the Kimpton Gray Hotel but it should be noted, we did stay in the King Spa Suite. I have heard they are pet friendly but I was assured our room is thoroughly vaccumed and can attest, our room did not have any pet odor. I have exceptionally sensitive skin and I am allergic to most house hold pets. I am happy to say, my skin did not break out in hives or anything. Would we come back here? In a heart beat if we are to come back to Chicago. read more

Nice hotel. Reception area staff nice and accommodating. Room was beautiful. Bath an extra. The bathtub seems long. I almost went under because it was so long and I'm 5.5. No microwave in room. If I called for anything the staff was responsive. They offered multiple amenities - dog bed, dog bowl, blankets, extra pillow, games, etc without me ever having to ask. Once in room I heard absolutely no sounds. The hotel is COVID compliant. I got a bag of ice and they have it in plastic bags pre wrap. Check out was simple I would stay here again! Special note: With COVID there are lots of things shut down - restaurants, physical room, pool, etc. read more

I really do love Kimpton hotels. I've never had a bad stay at one, and this one did not break the streak. It's smack dab in the middle of the loop, and walk-able to many attractions (Millennium and Grant Parks, the Chicago Institute of Art, Symphony Center, the American Writer's Museum), and only a block to two to several different el lines, and the red and blue lines. The vibe is quiet elegance with lots of marble, grey, and white. My room was a good size, though with no view to speak of. All the standard amenities are there, except a coffee maker (you can get one on request, and there's a coffee/tea bar in the loving room every morning.) Bed was comfortable, with a usable desk, comfortable arm chair, big wardrobe (colorfully painted inside its staid exterior), TV framed on the wall as art and handy USB plugs everywhere. The good sized bathroom had a walk on shower, plenty of counter space, and lovely Atelier Bloem products in eco-friendly pump bottles. (Also eco friendly dual trash/recycling bin next to the desk.) Wine hour from 5-6 is always nice chance to get some decent wine, though on my stay no one was particularly friendly, but that's not the hotels fault. There is a lobby bar and rooftop tapas restaurant I didn't visit. Also room service menu, i didn't use. I did use the "raid the bar" $10 allowance which comes with my IHG status for snacks, as well as getting some snacks and drinks at the block-away Walgreen's that fit in the mini-bar bridge (yay, no sensors to worry about!) As far as service, the staff couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful. Every interaction was pleasant from checking, to the wine hour attendants, to several requests i had during my stay (late checkout - no problem, band aid for a small cut? sure! Men's razor? Yep! -- all offered with a smile and genuine concern about if i was enjoying my stay. The baggage guy my last day especially made my stay. He was super---friendly and all smiles - even offered a bottled water on my way out. Of all the Kimptons I've stayed at, this is the Kimptoniest :) read more

Totally renovated old downtown Chicago building into a boutique-style hotel. Lots of marble in the common areas. My room was larger than most similar rooms in large cities with stylish appointments. The bed was very comfortable!! The staff at Reception were excellent, friendly and efficient. One thing, if you drive, park directly in front of the Monroe Street entrance, unload and a valet will take your vehicle as there's no place to park. Kimpton Gray Hotel - Tub/shower room - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

I loved my stay here this weekend! Great, central location in the theatre district of downtown Chicago that felt safe and clean even in the wee hours of the night. The bed and bedding are probably among the nicest I've ever slept in at a hotel, so much so that I called the front desk to see if we could get the information for ourselves to see if we could upgrade our home bedding to that level of cozy fluffiness LOL. A huge perk is that there is no deadline to check in by, just call ahead to let the front desk know you will be checking in at an ungodly hour and they'll make note of it and not cancel your reservation as a no show. Check in was incredibly efficient and fast, and I was in my room within minutes of having stepped into the hotel. The design of the hotel is very chic and the room was spacious and spotlessly clean. Another perk is that they are pet friendly if you ever need to bring along your furry family members. I will gladly come back, even if it's only to enjoy the pillowy soft goodness of those sheets/bedding again! read more

Overall nice hotel. Pros-Really nice staff Doesn't charge for dogs and green spaces close by to go potty Decent pricing Good sized rooms Nice bathrooms, lots of hot water Fairly quiet Great location We used spot hero and paid $20 a day for a garage a 10 min walk away. Cons-Bedding not great quality. I really don't like when there is no comforter cover that secures around it. We end struggling all night and it doesn't feel sanitary. Bed was medium on the comfy scale. Also, boys great hotel is you have allergies to scents and cleaning products. It's pretty strong in the rooms and corridors. My wife and I got a rare weekend away from our lovely children in the city! We stayed at Kimpton Hotel Monaco the last year we came down here and were pleased with our experience. So we decided to try out their more upscale offering here at Gray. From the moment we checked in they were wonderful at the front desk. My wife got in early off the train and checked in quickly to enjoy their outstanding bathtub featured here in the review. I was driving down straight from work late that night and was greeted with a smile and a very helpful concierge. Upon getting up to the room I was very impressed with the quality of linens, layout of the room with a seating area, and the bathtub feature. As weird as it sounds, my wife and I only book hotels based off of their bathtubs! We love having soaker tubs as an essential part of our stay. This place didn't disappoint! From beginning to end, we were blown away with the service and the quality of stay; and at a very affordable price! We will return soon. read more

Kimpton Gray Hotel - Complimentary wine hour- choice of red, white or rose. Rose for the best of both worlds. - Venues & Event Spaces Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

Beautiful hotel with friendly staff! Visited for our anniversary and they surprised us with chocolates and champagne in the room!

If a guest perspective of hotel is to be judged by it's front desk team, the Kimpton Gray Hotel is a 5 star experience. Miles and Bobby, the two concierge at Kimpton Gray hotel, were among the best I've ever had the pleasure of meeting. Every one of their recommendations and suggestions were spot on! Their knowledge of the city was evident as I mercilessly peppered them with questions, asked for maps and help with restaurant recommendations and reservations. These gentlemen are professionals! For example, we were pleasantly surprised to find a bottle of chilled champagne and cupcake awaiting our return to our room to help celebrate a birthday along with a welcoming note from Miles and Bobby. A thoughtful and gracious gesture. I toyed with the thought of getting a pizza to take home and asked if they could keep it in their freezer until I left. Of course they would! They said they had two other guests pizza's currently being held in the freezer. And, getting us reservations at busy La Scarola on a Saturday night? Done. And it was fantastic! Really, it seemed like there wasn't anything they couldn't help us with. Amanda was on duty when we checked in and out. She could not have been more pleasant, helpful and professional. We enjoyed glasses of wine at their complimentary wine social hour and the morning coffee and hot chocolate were delicious. Our rooms were clean and well appointed. I appreciated the elegance of a by gone era that was evident in the polished brass and marble throughout the hotel. The location is within walking distance of the beautiful Oriental Theater and Michigan Ave and many restaurants. In short, our visit could not have been more perfect and Miles and Bobby were a big part of the success. While deciding on the hotel for this trip was time consuming as there were so many to choose from, it will be a quick and easy decision the next time. Can't wait to return to The Kimpton Gray. read more

Who's underwear are these? Not mine. Overall, our stay was okay, but I felt the hotel was overpriced for what it was. The photos on the website did not translate to what you got upon arrival. Another disappointing discovery was finding a pair of underwear stuck in the bottom corner of the fitted sheets that unfortunately, were not ours. Hopefully, they weren't from a previous guest! I could see this happening in a cheap motel, but not in a four-star hotel where I paid over $600 a night. I regret splurging on something that did not really deliver. You can get much better options in Chicago for the same rate or a lot less! read more

I stayed at The Gray this past weekend, taking a short staycation while friends were in town. I booked "blind" through Priceline because of the location and reasonable price as well as its designation as a "4.5 star" hotel. Let's start with the positives: the staff were very friendly and helpful. They offered me, as well as my friends who were staying at the hotel next door, glasses of complementary wine, which was a nice welcome! I think the decor in the common areas is classic and beautiful (marble and brass), and the rooms feature a nice mix of vintage detail (high ceilings and crown/picture moulding) and contemporary style (matte charcoal floor tile in the bathroom, decorative tile on the tub surround, a sliding "barn door" for the bedroom, and that huge resin globe swag next to the bed!). The bed was comfortable, but I'd have preferred a lighter bed covering considering it was over 90° in Chicago that weekend, rather than a heavy down (down alternative?) comforter; it was too hot to use it. I also appreciate that my bathroom featured universal design with hand rails and a sink that accommodates a wheelchair, but that looks so beautiful and sleek that most guests wouldn't realize its design purpose. It's 2021; this is how every hotel property should be designed! Finally, the location is stellar. The Gray is centrally located in the loop with easy access to public transport, and cabs stop regularly. The art institute, Macy's (historic Marshall Fields building), Willis (Sears) Tower, the theatre district, and much more are all within a short walk. There's a LOT to like. I can't give a 5-star review, though, because there are a few minor negatives to consider. First, while the hotel itself is very quiet, there is inadequate sound proofing. My room faced Monroe and I heard people outside on the street most of the night. I was also awoken the first morning by the sound of a crew pressure washing the bank across the street. The armoire was also really nice but I missed having at least a small dresser for my socks, t-shirts, and underwear. The rooftop bar (Boleo) was excellent (my old fashioned was one of the best I've had! The garlicky yuca fries were also fantastic) and the service was generally good, but it was a little frustrating to be asked to give up our table after 90 minutes despite there being a number of open tables and nobody waiting for our seats. 10 PM also seems early to close on Friday night. Finally, there was no housekeeping during my stay. This could be a covid adjustment--I'm not certain. However, part of what I enjoy when I stay in a hotel is returning from brunch or shopping to a freshly made bed, fresh towels, the trash removed, the used/dirty drinking glasses removed, and a nice clean bathroom. It was only me and I'm fairly tidy, so it wasn't a problem, but it certainly didn't make for a 5-star experience to have to stare at accumulating trash all weekend (I bagged it up myself and brought to to a housekeeper) and having to ask them to send clean drinking glasses to the room. In all, I'd stay at The Gray again and I'd also recommend it to a friend without reservation. You just might want to pack some ear plugs if you're a light sleeper. I think labeling it a 4.5 star hotel is a bit of a stretch (it does not compare to Swissotel, The Intercontinental, etc, in my opinion), but it's definitely a 4 star hotel and it's priced well considering. read more
