Our experience with Killer Decks was very good. In the end we have a high quality deck and had a really professional/respectful crew. The deck was done faster then promised and an affordable price. I would use them again. Also, we had a bit of a problem getting variance permits, but that was our townships issue. Steve helped us through the process and pulled in other professionals to help. Most unprofessional and rudest people ever. I ordered a "custom" gate (height and width). It was never stated anywhere that they don't do this. I was told that "we went out of our way to make it happen for you" as it was something they dont even sell. If that was the case, they should have emailed me or when they did call me could have said this is NOT something we can do but they did NOT. They called to confirm. The order finally arrives and one of the posts had like router/drill mistake chewed up. So can't install that. I had read on their website that each package is carefully packaged and inspected before shipped. Well clearly that didn't happen. When I emailed them the picture and called, they acted like we did it. Nope that's how it came out of your carefully inspected box. I was told a new post would be cut and shipped out that day with tracking emailed. Of course that didn't happen. I had to reach back out and was yelled at via email - when they response in all CAPS, its disrespectful and disgusting. I wish I would have read these reviews before placing my order. If you don't like what you are doing or dealing with the public, it's time you close your doors. I will keep it basic. I purchase a gate (in stock) 6/10/23 did not received it until 6/29/23 when the owner Steve Scholl emailed me saying it would take 4 days to arrive. I ordered a 36" x 42" gate and I got a 48" x 42" so I had to cut it to size, but after I put it together I find the caps missing. I email them and I still haven't received a response. Their website offers 24/7 customer assistance but when you call there's a disturbed person answering the phone and upset you called, I imagine is the owner Steve Scholl. If you want to deal with terrible customer service and be spoke down to, this a place you want to deal with. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!!! read more

I ordered 7 more since I needed to finish the job which I received quickly. I called and emailed them few more time over the next several weeks and still no response. I wish I could give them a "0". This was the absolute worst experience. $23,000 for a new deck build. Two-level deck. Carpentry/workmanship was the absolute worst!! The framing was done with sub quality wood. Boards clearly cracked and warped. Uneven, crooked cuts. Patches where spans were too short. GAPS!! AND MORE GAPS!! Joists not setting on the beams as they should. Double beams not securely doubled. Found damaged deck boards installed when I powerwashed the deck (THEY DIDN'T CLEAN UP). My initial crew was ONE PERSON!! After two weeks I complained and they sent out a replacement crew of TWO "boys". None were really skilled "carpenters". Owner is rude and condescending. He refused to meet with me for a pre-build review to make sure we were on the same page. He refused to come out for any kind of quality control check. What was supposed to take a week, took a month. I'm praying that the deck survives a freeze/thaw. Can't emphasize enough to STAY AWAY FROM KILLER DECKS!! I have four texts and three phone calls into them to get the damaged boards replaced with no response. read more

I bought a deck and fence. The man that came took measurements and order was rude and arrogant. It was hard to get in touch with these people. No phone contact. Email us. No answer on email. Deck got started and almost finished while I was in Florida. I'll see in the spring how level it remains. Doesn't look too bad now. The fence on the other hand seems a bit wobbly. The gap between my fence and neighbors existing fence is big enough for a small dog to walk through. On the other side of the house, posts are already falling over and the latch is in pieces. OK.. a year later... the trim boards on the deck are falling off. I'm noticing screws meant to hold decking are just barely started and not screwed in! The fence is falling over. Panels falling out! I wouldn't hire this joker to build a doghouse! This company at one time had a good reputation. Satisfied customers! Either the owner changed his attitude or sold the company and new owner is just there taking your money. read more

The owner, Steve, has to be the rudest person I have ever had to deal with as a consumer. Any time you ask a question you get impression you are bothering him. I had placed an order with them to be picked up as I was attempting to support a local business. About a week after I ordered, even though the website says orders made by 3pm ship the same day, I get a call from Steve and he says my railing order is ready (wednesday). I let my wife know and she makes the 30 minute trip to the shop to pick up. Once gets inside the snide comments start and she is told the order wont be ready until Saturday. She texts me the info and I call. Steve answers the phone, rude as always, and once I say who I am he starts yelling at me. I ask for clarification as to what "your order is ready" means, and he hangs up on me. I call back several more times with the same results; getting yelled at and hung up on. The following day I email Steve asking when the order will actually be ready so I (don't waste another trip). He gives me a 30 minute window on Saturday (today is Thursday) to pick up or he will "return it to stock". I apologized if there was a miss-communication about the pick up the prior day, and said we need to put that behind us and move on or cancel the transaction. Steve chose to not respond and canceled the transaction. It must be tough to live such a miserable life as Steve does. I would highly advise that you do NOT do business with this company unless you have a sick desire to be verbally abused and made to feel guilty trying to buy product for your home. read more

I hired this company to put a deck on my front porch in Aug 2016 and they did a beautiful job. In June 2017, I hired them to do the back porch. I was charged $200 to have a post reset. They did not remove the post as they cut the decking around it. A nail that was misdriven into a board and it bent and now the board is splitting. Additionally, the contract was written the same way as for my front deck and skirting was included on the front deck and skirting was not added to the back deck. The most frustrating thing about this situation is that you can't get anyone from the company discuss the situation with you. Promises of return calls never happen. It is a shame. The front deck transformed the look of my house. Now, my neighbors who have considered using them are watching how this situation gets resolved. BUYER BEWARE!!! Ordered five (5) items for the deck I was building from The Deck Barn in October 2015. It was less expensive than the Deckorators balusters I could buy at Lowe's/Home Depot. Purchased 26" Aluminum Round Deck Spindles, 24" Aluminum Round Deck Spindles, Spindle Connectors, Stair Spindle Connector, and Stainless Steel Screws for the Spindle Connectors. The order arrived in reasonable time, but... I received the wrong number of Spindle Connectors, Stair Spindle Connector, and Stainless Steel Screws for the Spindle Connectors!!! Sent an e-mail to ask for the items I was missing. No reply in 24 hours. So I called & left a message. I received a call a day later that I recognized as from the area code of The Deck Barn. The woman stammers a bit and said she got the wrong number. I corrected her and tell her no, I have been waiting for a call back about the shortage from my order. She said I must have called in as she was placing a call out. I corrected her and tell her she actually called me... She seemed confused, but said she thinks the items I was shorted have already gone out and will call me back. I never hear back. I called the next day and talked to the same woman again. I was told my missing items have gone out. Ten (10) days later, I received them USPS mail. Not Priority, but First Class! It gets worse. In the meantime, I started installing the items that I already had. I initially thought the gaps between the spindles and the spindle connectors had to do with variations in the 2x4 treated lumber. But by the time I completed my third section of railing, I noticed the problem was with the spindles themselves. I was surprised to see a fairly substantial variation in spindle lengths... a 1/8-inch or greater variation in a 26-inch spindle. And some of the cuts were not exactly at 90 degrees! I ultimately unwrapped all the spindles and laid them out flat. I then ordered the spindles from shortest to longest and used the dozen or so of roughly the same length for each railing section. I eventually had to go back and redo the three section of railing I had already done. I sent an e-mail with pictures and a video link (https://youtu.be/x962mbR-NU4) to show the problems. Six (6) days later, still no response, so I sent the e-mail again with the pictures and video link. Finally got a reply: "We have recalibrated the saw. You should have just told us of your problem and we would have been glad to swap out any products for you. Sorry for your problems." Really??? I did tell them in an e-mail that they never responded to! They apparently have some real QA/QC issues!! Any money I might have saved by not using Deckorators brand from local sources I lost in time redoing work & having to deal with The Deck Barn. read more

We ordered $259 worth of deck spindle connectors and spindles from The Deck Barn, when I called to let them know we received the wrong connectors the gentleman I was speaking to acted as if I was bothering him. The phone seemed to be cutting in and out, as I was trying to tell the guy my order number and what item was incorrect he kept speaking over me. I asked for a manager and the guy started yelling at me telling me he was the damn owner.. He was a very ugly guy cussing at a woman customer, first he said he'd ship me the right ones, then told me he wouldn't and hung up on me. I'm not gonna lie, I cussed back and said if they were not going to correct it I'd cancel the credit charge as well as contact the BBB and leave reviews. I'm not sure if the bad phone connection is what caused the phone call to go down hill, but it was ugly having someone talk to me like that. After the 2nd time of being hung up on I received a text message saying they will send me the correct connectors. I know we will be finding another company to order from for our next deck projects. I definitely would not recommend ordering from The Deck Barn if the items are available elsewhere. read more

We matched it the best we could and they brought out a totally different material. We fought with killer decks all the way to the end and with in the first year the deck material was faded from a tan to a white. read more

They submitted a different deck design then we had agreed on for the permits when this deck was built they tried to blame the carpenters for make a decision based on our yard. To be clear and transparent I have not had work done by this company, but my experience with them at the Novi Home Builders Show on 4-13-19 was insulting. I am in the market to have a deck built and when I approached the deck barn at the home builders show I was greeted by the most arrogant, condescending, rude service provider you could ever imagine. When I told him where I lived (within 30 minute drive of the show) he said "why should I go out there, I can do 20 jobs closer than that. Which made me think, if you have that many jobs, why are you here at the show advertising. He finally gave me a high verbal quote which included $500.00 for a permit which is actually $100.00 according to the township. This guy was such an a**hole I can't imagine how much business he actually chasses away. Longest deck project ever. Looked ok to my untrained eye but has NEVER passed inspection. This is the 3rd summer. To be fair, they have sent someone to "fix" the issues but obviously have been unable to do it. I won't get into all the issues during the project. And trying to contact someone who will help, lol!! That's funny. The first time they came out to fix the issues with inspection they added a second set of gate posts. It's comical how terrible it looks and we spent WAY more money to get the trex wood. BEWARE of using this company. And BBB has some reviews too. And beware of a contract deck company with a new name near the same address. That's what happens. Bad reviews? NO PROBLEM! Let's just change our name. I'll update and post pictures soon. Not so good experience with this business. My neighbor told us that he & his wife has a bad experience with them and would not recommend them - but we decided to try them anyway. BAD decision. Once the contract was signed, we experienced unprofessional-ism at its best. The sub-contractor was just ok - doing what he was contracted to do. We went back to the business and they were rude to say the least. We did not get what we paid thousands of dollars for and we very disappointed.
