We just finished a relatively large project. All new Hardie siding, new gutters, new front door, new Pella patio doors. We compared with several different companies and decided with John McCarter and I am glad we did. Our experience started with Clyde, who really did win this deal for them. He was the ONLY one who brought us any kind of mock up for our house, offered design suggestions, and even gave us advice for our roof for a future project. I highly suggest you ask for him. He explained the entire project and how it would work. Next we worked with James, who did final field measures. And double crossed the t's and dotted the i's to make sure everything was exactly what we wanted before they ordered. We very much appreciated this. While we were working with James, we had an attic inspection done by Jim who caught a leak in our attic! So added bonus, always better to find that sooner. When you have a project this large, things ARE GOING to go wrong. The important thing is how does the company handle things when they go wrong. And I can give nothing but the highest praise to this company and specifically our Project Manager John Giese in this regard. He always got in front of every issue, quickly communicated everything and kept the project on track The job is split into separate crews, Vas was the Forman for the actual siding. And to this day I can't believe how fast and efficient his crew was. The gutter team of Hunter, Aubrey, and Jason were quick and offered great guidance! Helped us consolidate a downspout! One less for me to step on! Tony came out and quickly fixed our before mentioned attic leak. Dan and Josh took fantastic care of us when installing all our doors. We had them add hardie board to our house. They also did the trim, soffits, and gutters. Our account manager was great. He returned all of my calls and kept me updated on everything. The office sent emails and phone calls with updates. The workers were very helpful and did a great job. We are very pleased with the work. They made sure we were pleased with the work. Update - we have had about a year and a half of having the siding up. There have been a number of warranty visits - 2 x visits for failed caulking. 1 x visit for a trim board that fell down because they used improper nails as I mentioned in he original review. 2 x visits to finish flashing on the windows because they did not do it properly in the first place. The caulk failed and I could see the wood directly under the thin layer of caulk. It took over 6 months of waiting to finish the last (and hopefully final) visit, including 4-5 reschedules. They told me I was "consistently displeased", and that is something we do agree on, so that gives them +1 star. Also the office people are nice. But in the end it is the product that has to be installed right, and the people they hire do that, not the office workers. read more

Just awesome to work with. Called needing some work done on my roof after a wind storm. Was set up with an appointment on the next business day. Unfortunately, you can't send people up on a roof during a snow storm. John McCarter Construction kept in touch and gave me consistent updates as to when I'd be rescheduled for. They came out quoted me the job and said they would start it in 6 weeks and then they would not return my emails and after 2 or 3 weeks I get a letter that they decided they were not going to do the job. I wasted a lot of valuable time that I could have used to schedule someone who would show up and do the work. Bad experience - broken trust. John McCarter Construction team was hired to conduct full exterior restoration of my house in 2017. They conducted the evaluation, we signed the contract and they did the work. The job included 60 month warranty as part of the contract. Less than a year later we arranged house painting. While preparing our house we noticed rotten wood boards and panels - many looked quite problematic. We contacted John McCarter Construction, provided photos of problematic areas and requested assistance. It took multiple calls and e-mails but after a few weeks John McCarter Construction finally sent a representative to assess and fix what was needed. First team came and left stating that they were not prepared for the level of the repair. Second team came to make a proper assessment. They verbally agreed most of the problem areas were the result of the neglect by the John McCarter Construction original team, made new pictures and left to discuss the situation with John McCarter Construction management. A few days later representative, James Halfacer, responded in writing denied any responsibility of his company for the job not done properly and offered to consider fixing all problems at our expense and for an extra cost of about 50% of the original contract. read more

My husband and I are both busy professionals. We have lived in Northville for over ten years and had always wanted a screen door. Early Spring I decided to go ahead with the idea but I had no clue how to start. I am not a D.I.Y. kind of women. So I got on line to look for companies to do the work. I called John and he treated me very kindly unlike the several door installers I'd called prior to reaching him. However, my husband choose to go another route. Several weeks later we had a leak in the roof. I told my husband use John's company. He was hesitant and asked for a recommendation from a friend who is quite handy himself. It turned out to be John McCarter! We were both pleased that he had a great reputation. I sensed he'd be great from the first interaction on the phone. We had some exterior repairs done to rotting trim and had the house painted. First an estimator (a salesman) shows up-- and he keeps following up until you sign on. Later a team leader comes by, then the various crews show up...but they always call first. Lots of different people so it's hard to know who to call if you have a question or a clarification. The painters, for example, did not know what colors we had specified. On the other hand, you could call the office and ask for John McCarter, and he picked up the phone. The painting crew apparently broke several walkway lights while moving ladders around, but I was sufficiently pleased with the quality and speed of the work that I did not complain. There are a lot of companies out there that are subbing out a variety of day laborers and there are a lot of "one-man-show" operators who are in and out of the business. John McCarter has a good track record and a professional approach without seeming too "corporate." I would recommend them and would use them again in the future. read more

We had many exterior jobs done by John McCarter Construction. We had a new roof, the exterior wood trim replaced (not the siding), new gutters, new windows, and painting of our existing pergola. Each of the contractors who came were very professional and overall did an excellent job. We only had a few problems. First, we specified to the sales person that we wanted to replace all the exterior trim with fiber cement board. When we reviewed the quote, we thought we were going to get that for the trim, but that the soffit was going to be aluminum wrapped. Unfortunately that was not what the quote was for. It was for all aluminum wrapped trim. Thankfully, after we complained they decided to honor our initial request. However, our garage door opening trim was not included in the quote even though we specified we wanted to replace all of the trim. Second, we specified that we wanted our windows to be replaced in such a way that they looked original. That meant pulling out the exterior side trim during the installation to place the flanges underneath the siding. The sales person even made a sketch to show us what they were going to do. The crew that came did an excellent job. They were very clean and professional and we could tell they were taking their time to do a good job. But after they left, we realized they installed everything just like all other replacement windows and did not pull the siding back as we wanted (and paid for). Also, no one ever told us that they would not do calking/painting of the trim on the interior of the house where they nailed the windows. Now, we have to start the process of finding someone to do it, or find the time to do it ourselves. The only other issue we were concerned about was timing. We were told it would take about 2 weeks for the whole thing to be done. Because there are so many sub-contractors involved, it took nearly 3 months for the whole thing to be done. They sometimes kept us informed of what was going to happen when but we had to call a few times to get firm dates. Everything else went well and we would use them again in the future. read more

I feel like the work was not fully completed, but did not realize till after payment was made. Now they will not complete the job stating that it was not included in the quote. On 3/25 John McCarter come out and quoted me for adding soffit ventilation. He suggested using truvent soffit material which comes in a color to match the color of the house and it would give me exceptional air flow. I ended up going with this system due to the color match and it seemed like he would go the extra mile if needed. So installation day came and no one showed up, I called the office and someone stated that I was on the schedule and they were probably running late due to early morning rain. So I waited and waited still no one came. I called and left a message for John. He called back quickly and said that I should have received an email stating that the job was postponed due to rain, which I never received. The job started 2 days later and looked good from the exterior (assuming that all work behind the soffit was done correctly). I received an invoice through email and promptly paid. Two weeks later I had a ceiling fan put in which required work in the attic, while the ladder was there I snuck a peek in the attic to see that there was no baffles installed between the roof and the insulation which butts right up to each other. I called McCarter construction and talked with Bradley, he agreed that I needed the baffles to get the ventilation I was looking for but stated that it was not in the quote to install baffles. He stated that he would talk with John to see a resolve. They discussed with each and stated that I would have to pay an additional $400 or so to get the baffling installed. I have talked with several contractors all of which stated that the baffling should be included with the soffit install. Today my wife called a second time to see if we could work something out but they are standing behind their story "it was not in the quote". In the end I paid $1700 for decorative trim that currently serves no purpose, even though I specifically requested soffit ventilation when John came to quote me, now I will have to hire another contractor to finish the job at an additional expense. Use caution when working with this company. read more

DO NOT do business with John McCarter Construction. I purchased caulk from John with the plan for him to paint our new construction home. I have several email conversations confirming the color of caulk, as it needed to be color matched to the windows. He confirmed that I was getting the right color (specific number). The caulk was ordered and installed. The WRONG color caulk was installed. Once discovering this, I emailed John. He called me and told me I could just pay to have the caulk on the windows painted. He refused to take responsibility for it. Instead he attacked me about it. He hurled insults and ultimately hung up the phone on me. He was extremely verbally abusive and made a number of personal attacks (I am a woman by the way). I have dealt with people in the construction field for many, many years. I have never dealt with someone so unprofessional. Do not do business with this company!!!! I am pursing this situation further, but please don't make the mistake that I did! read more
