The chicken soup was great! We also tried the dumplings. I had the beef boiled and the cheese fried. Both good, but the cheese was better. I didn't try the mushroom one because a person in our party said it was heavy on dill. For me the highlight was the cheese bread! Delish!!!! Nice place and service was great. read more

Came here with friends to try a new cuisine. Curious to see there were tons of dumplings in the various shapes and sizes of a chef's hat. Novelty aside, I did not find the flavors compelling. I tend to prefer strong flavored foods but the flavors here were mild. Also the prevalence of wheat in most of the dishes did not bode well with me. Came here for lunch with my coworkers and I absolutely loved it! The staff did a fantastic job at servicing 10 people and giving menu recommendations. We ate family style and got to try out tons of menu items! I tried the mediterranean salad, ICH salad, kachapuri, seasoned fries, fried mushroom khinkali, boiled mushroom khinkali, fried cheese khinkali, and potato skewer. Everything was so tasty and filling!! My favorites were the fried cheese khinkali and boiled mushroom khinkali. Both of the salads were also to die for but I liked the mediterranean one better. My meat eater companions (I'm vegetarian) had a resounding approval for all of their food items as well! Their system for differentiating dumplings was also super clever! Some will either have waves or a flat top to ensure you know which dumpling you're getting. The staff was extremely friendly and made sure we understood the menu and had everything we needed from enough food to drinks. They had a wonderful indoor/outdoor area with a covered cabana. The cuisine of the Caucasus region is one that most Americans would just write-off as Armenian, or maybe even simply Middle Eastern (which it is definitely NOT). This area is Europe. Eastern Europe Yes, but Europe nonetheless. Europe goes all the way to the Ural Mountains - and Georgia is still west of them. But there is more to it than that. When the Asiatic Mongols smashed into the region between the Black and the Caspian Seas, the people of the Caucasus fled into the mountains and became partisans, which left this region "too difficult to take". So there is a huge originality in the cuisine. Sure, they have the Asian influenced steamed dumplings, but they also have dishes that are similar to Russian, Arab, Greek, and Roman foods. My favorite dish is the big meaty dumplings that you can't eat the stem of. This place is well worth a try - even just in an anthropological way. read more

Last week, my wife and I decided to try something new and visited an Armenian restaurant for the first time. We were so impressed that I felt like I had to leave a review. First off, the staff was wonderful, especially our server Anastacia. She was very attentive, helpful, and gave us great recommendations on the best dishes on the menu. We tried the borscht, and it was hands down the best soup I've ever had. We also had khinkali--both fried with cheese and boiled with meat. The fried ones with cheese were especially good--the cheese was melted, and it was just delicious. And the lamb chops were also great, though the portion could be a bit bigger. It would be nice if they added some salad greens on the side too, though the potatoes served with it were a nice touch.The food here is so different from what we usually have. We also ordered some Georgian wine, though, to be honest, I didn't catch the name, but we really enjoyed it. For dessert, we had Napoleon. We were already full, but it was so wonderful that we finished it and even ordered another one to take home. It would be awesome to bring friends here next time. read more

My friend had us visit this restaurant that she often comes to when she is the area. We had her order for us what she thought we would like. She order a variety of plates for us. We had the bread basket with Puri and Lavash, cheese plate with a variety of cheeses and veggies. A plate of dolmas, plate of different beef and chicken skewers, Mediterranean salad and of course a variety of Khinkali. It was nice to have such a variety to have. We got to have a little bit of everything and it was all delicious. The staff was friendly and made sure we had everything we needed. I love that they serve Mexican Coke and bring the bottle to the table. Sure takes of having to worry for a refill. Just left this place . We're in LA with visiting and want to try some Georgian food. Googled this place by reviews. First there was zero ppl to welcome us when we came and waiter who was near just told us to sit where we wanted. After 10 min waiting our waiter finally showed up. Khinkali were not bad . But kids didn't like it so we ordered pelmeni. Also were bbq in order :pork (nobody told us it will not be clear meat,it were bid bones and nobody eat them ),chicken breast(was not juicy and not tasty) and beef (this was really tasty and soft). Waiter just forget about us and that we added pelmeni to our order bc when we asked to bring them since it very long waiting ,she run to kitchen and when came back said they are off. Seriously ? Waiting 20 minutes to hear that you don't have them ? This is not Georgian hospitality Not recommended this place read more

the food here was awesome! my party of 3 and i loved the lamb, beef, and cheese khinkali. the zhengyalov hatz, borsch, and pork skewers were also delicious. we weren't as satisfied with the service. we were seated and we had to flag over the wait staff multiple times to take our order. we had to wait long periods of time between when each food order came out. the last item we got was the zhengyalov hatz. we had to flag over our server to ask when it was coming, and even after we did, it took a long time for them to bring it out. so it seemed like they didn't write down the order at all. the bussers however did a great job checking in throughout the meal and alerting the wait staff when something was needed. the other tables around us seemed to be having a great time, and other reviewers seem to state that the service is great, so i'm not sure if it was just our table that was disregarded that night? overall, trying this food was an awesome experience, but the service at khinkali house left much to be desired. read more

Armenian/ Georgian/ Eastern European food restaurant that from what I know, is known for their dumplings (the khinkali). I've been here a few times now and love the place. It's located in kind of an 'off street' in Glendale. I had just a little trouble finding it the first time I went. Really close to the King Taco there. Now, I don't know too much about the cuisine of this area of the world, so the kind young lady behind the bar was super help on this past visit. I do love the universal language of dumplings, so I feel loving the food here comes naturally. On my most recent visit, I came here with one of my good buddies (so there was only two of us). We ordered the khachapuri, some khinkali (boiled and fried), and some pelmeni. We got a side of sour cream for the khinkali and pelmeni. The khachapuri came out hot and crispy. As soon as you cut into it, you soon discovered the delicious gooey middle. The khinkali- we got the beef and mushroom both boiled and ordered the cheese fried (I wanted the crispy outside and gooey middle; I'm a fan of the textures) The pelmeni is pretty much like pierogi of a different name. Have been wanting Georgian cuisine for some years after visiting Georgia and Armenia, but don't live in LA anymore. Finally got the chance to try this place , and got their food to go. Ambiance is nice inside. Feels cozy and imtimate. Didn't disappoint. We got the zhengalyon hatz & and mushroom khinkalis. Wish I got to try their kachapuri. This is a restaurant that serves Russian/Armenian/Georgia recipe entree's, most notiably the Khinkali (Dumplings) Food is meidocre at best. My friend got Basturma, Sujuk, Meat Khinkali and I had the Mushroom Khinkali, Cheese plate and my life didn't change at all. Not even 5% for the better. I get it; Russian restaurant so You hire beautiful Russian waitresses and hostesses, fine. I'm sure the men enjoy the eye candy. I will even give you a pass for the OBNOXIOUS 2007 Lady Gaga music BLASTING in my ear like Im at Cheetahs strip call during last call. However, as a feminist, make sure to EDUCATE your 'beautiful' female staff so they know if a soup is vegetarian or not. EDUCATE your staff to be able to have the most basic conversation considering this restaurant is located in Glendale and we dont all know Russian. I felt awful trying to use sign language and dumbed down English to ask for the most simple anwers, such as "do you suggest a dipping sauce for the Khinkali"? "Does your mushroom soup have meat in it?" I felt like I was being demeaning and she indeed felt uncomfortable sheepishly walking away after not being able to answer the most basic menu questions. Lots of vegetarian options and great service! They were very informative on how to eat the dumplings since it was my first time trying this type of cuisine. The restaurant is spacious clean, and tables are adequately spaced. The different dumplings can be either boiled or fried. As a vegetarian I could get the cheese and mushroom. They are JUICY and big. At first for the price I wasn't sure if I would be full but it is actually very filling. We also tried their vegetable skews, cheese bread which was very delicate and tasty, and their honey cake. Disclaimer: I've had my share of foods from many different cultures, so I'd like to think I'm open minded and well rounded. But this is my first time trying Georgian cuisine, so can't attest to its authenticity. This is just my opinion based on my own palate. I recently learned about Georgian food and immediately became intrigued, so naturally I looked it up on Yelp. Found a few places with great reviews so I narrowed it down to this place. My first impression approaching the restaurant is that it might be more than a casual sit down eatery, judging from its modern logo outside. Khinkali House has plenty of outdoor seating and fairly spacious inside. We opted for the comfort of AC. I was only familiar with a few items on the menu and being very obvious this was our first time, I had hoped our server would be more helpful in suggesting dishes or introducing their cuisine to us. But she just walked by a few times and asked if we want to order. Even when I asked questions, there were short vague answers. This is what we ended up trying: * Khachapuri: Georgian cheese bread. Served on a double skewer, it came out hot with a nice golden exterior. But inside was just too salty. I pressed down and squeezed most of the cheese out for a better balance and to taste the actual bread. 2.5/5 * Khinkali: Georgian dumplings. We learned these are very popular, served either boiled or fried, and most order it boiled. They are large, filled with ground meat and spices. It's a bit salty, and the flavor isn't bad with hints of cilantro. But after 2, it becomes one dimensional. It's hard to eat more than a couple. Maybe we should've tried both the boiled and fried options. The top of the dumpling where they pinched the dough is hard and flavorless. 3/5 * Salmon, beef & chicken skewers: Each skewer has 4 bite sized pieces of meat. The chicken bread was a bit hard around the charred edges. The steak had better flavor and was slightly tender and the salmon had a nice texture. They were served with a thin,, tasteless flatbread and raw onions and potatoes. These were alright but I can't help but think about a nearby Persian restaurant that serves generous portions of perfectly cooked skewers for about the same price. 3/5 * For dessert, Honey cake: We really looked forward to this. It was moist, sweet and presented nicely, but compared to ones I had from Armenian bakeries, these just lacked any honey flavor. 3/5 * Georgian coffee: They said it's just like Turkish coffee. But when I had the coffee in Turkey, it took time to prepare it and was served strong and sweet. This came out quickly and was served w/o sugar. It was basically a smooth espresso shot with settling fine grounds at the bottom of the cup, but did not taste like Turkish coffee. Our experience was what we had hoped for. It's a shame the staff made no effort to make recommendations to new customers on their country's cuisine. Plus their attention to details fell a bit short a few times during our meal there. The value for what you get is a bit pricey. But they made sure to highlight w/ a marker AND circle the area for tips on the check, as a special reminder. The service was very average. Maybe we weren't 'regulars' or maybe they just assumed everyone should know everything on the menu. Well, we're all glad we tried something new for the first time, but considering the service and food we received, I can't say this will make us excited about their cuisine any time soon. read more

Came here with my gf on a Monday night --thought we'd give it a try since we pass by this place often. While the food was quite good and the restaurant itself was clean, the service left something to be desired. After our initial order, it seemed like the waitress forgot about us since l had asked for some ice water and l had to call over a different waiter to get some. Our orders of beef and salmon skewers took quite some time to come out, not sure why. The Khinkalis were delicious --my gf liked the mushroom and l really liked the cheese one. The bill took some time to get to us, but l know some of that might have been because l decided to add on to my order. Still, it always felt like l was waiting on someone or something which was quite irritating. Had these issues not been present, this would have been an easy 4 or 5 star rating. Still better than Castaway but l think it will be awhile before l consider coming back here unfortunately. read more

Anyone who knows anything about me knows I'm a Khinkali and Georgian food addict, so obviously I needed to go to the Khinkali House and see what they were all about. This is a gorgeous restaurant in Glendale with comfortable indoor and heated patio seating. The menu is a bit of a "tapas" style Georgian place, which is a bit different from the family style I'd be used to, but overall good. The verdict: great for Khinkali, the actual soup-y dumplings themselves, but everything else was just OK. If you're here for the dumplings, RUN here and grab a bunch. Both deep fried and boiled are delish, but I'd prefer the boiled beef/mushroom and deep fired cheese ones. The satsivi (chicken w/creamy walnut sauce) was pretty good, but generally ordered with a bread bowl. The mushroom soup was delicious, but pricey at $10 a cup. The khachipuri was ok, but I wanted a more boat with egg-style rather than the one they serve on the skewer and they don't have the adjarski kind here. All in all - for khinkali - this place is 5-stars...! If you're looking to try Georgian soup dumplings, definitely come here! Came yesterday with my wife at 6 pm and loads of tables were available inside. The host led us to a VERY small table for two, promising to reseat us once a table for four would come vacant (loads were). Two lads who came after us were first seated at a table for two and then re-seated at a table for four. Our very kind waitress mentioned to the host that she had promised to re-seat us - and she shrugged us off. Waited an hour for starters. We were offered the bread basked - which we accepted (and charged for). We ordered two Modela beers - and could only get one, as they ran out - a beer they say they have on tab. Starters and entrees were sort off delivered at the same time. I doubt we will go again. We would have forgiven the wait - but we do not tolerate the attitude of the host. Sorry. read more

Admittedly, we stumbled upon this restaurant, not really knowing much about the cuisine. We asked the waitress to recommend several items including each of the khinkalis, boiled and fried. It might just be the style of the food, but it was pretty bland and not very interesting. I think the thing that made it 3 stars for me was the extremely slow, inattentive service and the price point for the portions you got. Their pickled vegetable medley is SOUR. This is coming from someone who practically drinks vinegar. Just a heads up. Tastes good though. Their mushroom khinkali isn't bad, but it wasn't the best khinkali I've had. It's also too expensive, seriously. Almost four dollars for a single dumpling? I know they aren't equivalent, but I can buy a bag of like, 50 Chinese dumplings for less than twenty bucks. I like how they offer a mushroom filling, though. Their dolma is also a bit overly sour. Over rated Chinese soup dumpling joint, Din Tai Fung, has a superior competitor for the most flavourful soup dumplings in all of SoCal if not the entire world. What's better is that there is no insane & inane wait Khinkali House creates 3 wonderful types of soup dumplings from Trans-Caucasus Georgia which was formerly part of the now defunct Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, but there are other items from other parts of the USSR.   However, due to the Pandemic there was no indoor dining in the former Tumanyan Khinkali Factory space. Khinkali: 1) Ground beef dumpling was boiled to make the outer skin look like a smooth, silken, satiny purse.  The texture is soft, pliable. Hold the Khinkali by hand & bite into it to make a hole where you can sip the juice flavoured w/ herbs & onion. Then work your way in to eat the crumbly, soft meat & the rest of the wheat based skin. The pleated top of the dumpling is a bit tough so your choice as to eat it or not.   The meat juice flavour is rich & delicately herbed w/ garlic, onion, black pepper, cilantro for an effect far superior to the over rated soup dumplings of DTF.   2)  Velvety, plush Mushrooms are chopped up along w/ a predominantly dill/onion aroma which also has a bit of a meaty juice.  The dumpling is pan fried so part of it is leathery crispy, golden brown while other parts are drier, softer, & white.  This had the most delicate of earthy flavours although the dill did give it a nice fresh yet green, turpentine, herbal scent.  3)  Cheese inside is stringy like Raclette , and the addition of butter herbed juice squirting out w/ bright green Italian parsley made for a dairy intensive, satisfying flavour profile.  Again it was pan fried for added complex texture that complemented the cheesy richness. 4) Lamb Chops seem salt brined for moist meaty texture, not much of gaminess. Cooked to a medium plus, on the bone. Small potatoes, skin on, crinkle cut on one side. Fried, golden brown to dark brown which lent a burnt, slight bitterness to the soft, moist potatoes. Small side of raw purple onion slices garnished w/ powdered  Somagh/Sumac berries which adds a sour, fruity, smoky acidity. Small container of lightly herbed tomato sauce.    Prices are so reasonable compared to many of the overhyped "hipster" restaurants that have sprouted up in the last few years & serve ghastly food at atrocious prices.  Khinkali House is the Real Deal. Due to the Pandemic, take out only, but that may change depending on county regulations de jour. PS  KH is hidden.  There is an alley-like pedestrian entrance facing Maryland Street on the west side of the street between Wilson & Broadway. Walk on until you hit another alley & turn right. Authentic Georgian restaurant in Glendale. I was hankering for some khachapuri and this place kept coming up in my results, so came here on a Saturday around 1pm to grab some lunch! They're open for outdoor dining during covid. It seems that smoking was allowed. Bathrooms are available inside on the left hand side. Street parking (metered) is available; if you get lucky, you can find some 2 hour parking a few blocks out but read the signs. Food-wise, everything was delicious. As it's in the name, you must get the Khinkalis. You can get them boiled or fried, and you can opt from mushroom, beef, or cheese. The fried cheese khinkali was my personal favorite although the steamed mushroom is a close second. You eat it by grabbing it from the stem so that you can slurp up the juices from the dumpling (don't use a fork otherwise you lose the juice!). The pieli soup took a while to come out but the waitress gave us fair warning, and it was well worth it just for the warm phyllo dough covering on top. The soup was yogurt-y and came with a good amount of small dumplings. Of course, the khachapuri was super fresh and tasty. They do serve alcohol (including Armenian drinks) and credit cards are accepted. Overall, this place was super yummy and authentic - I'll be back the next time I have a craving for some more khinkalis. read more
