We went to Khan Saab for dinner out on a weeknight with the family. We made reservations online and we were seating as soon as we got there! Host and waiters were all very nice! They were chatting it up with my family and made us feel welcome. We ordered the pani puri for appetizers. Then ordered the peshawari chicken karahi (9/10), shrimp masala curry (7/10), chicken biryani (8/10), namkeen bout (lamb chops) (8/10). My brother got the pina colada (non-alcoholic) and it was delish! We also got garlic naan on the side. We ordered a New York strip but they only had tomahawks available so we skipped the steak. Overall this was a flavor explosion! Really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. It's was busy and there was chatter but it wasn't too loud. Bathrooms were clean. There's a prayer room near the back. Day 2 of opening at the Santa Monica region. It was quite busy and lively and the servers were very warm and welcoming. We started with the chicken tandoori (10/10), which was easily one of the best dishes of the evening. It was incredibly flavorful, perfectly marinated, and juicy enough that it didn't even need any chutney to enhance it. For the mains, we tried the shrimp curry, which was pleasantly mild and surprisingly light. Unlike many coconut-based curries that can feel heavy, this one was well balanced and comforting. We were hoping to order the Dal Bukhara, but since they were out, we went with the yellow dal instead--and honestly, it did not disappoint. Rich, flavorful, and satisfying, it earned a solid 9/10. The only dish that missed the mark for us was the Brussels sprouts (6/10). While the flavor was decent, they felt a bit too dry compared to the rest of the meal. And then came the true star of the show: the rasmalai cake (10/10). Milky, spongy, creamy, and absolutely delicious. It perfectly captured the flavors of traditional rasmalai while adding a unique cake texture. Without a doubt, it's a must-try and worth saving room for dessert. We were really looking forward to trying Khan Saab in Santa Monica, especially because we've been to the Fullerton location many times and have always enjoyed it. We had also heard from several people that the Santa Monica location was even better, so our expectations were pretty high. Unfortunately, our experience was extremely disappointing. The appetizers were actually excellent. The Sloppy Khan, pani puri, and General Tso's chicken were all delicious and probably the highlight of the meal. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there. We ordered the New York strip, and it was extremely salty and served with ketchup, which was just bizarre. The steak itself was one of the most confusing and unpleasant pieces of meat I've ever been served. The only entrée that we genuinely enjoyed was the chicken biryani, which was very good. We also ordered the smoked beef kebab, which was badly burned and had an awful sour taste. It was essentially inedible. For dessert, we tried the ras malai peach rose cake, and this was another major disappointment. The cake was basically a sponge drenched in an excessive amount of syrup and covered in a strange cream-cheese-like frosting. Unfortunately, the sponge itself had a very unpleasant, almost musty odor. It was difficult to eat. The service was also extremely slow, which made the overall experience even more frustrating. I also ordered the passionfruit mocktail after specifically telling our server that I wanted something that was less sweet and less sugary. What I received was basically the exact opposite- extremely sweet and sugary. I honestly never imagined this restaurant would be this bad after having such a positive impression of the Fullerton location. We had heard so many people rave about Santa Monica and say it was the better location, but that was definitely not our experience. For us, I would much rather go next door to BOA, where you get an actual ocean view and, in my opinion, a much better halal steak experience. There were definitely a few bright spots, particularly the appetizers and chicken biryani, but overall the food, dessert, drinks, and service were nowhere near what we expected. Visited Khan Saab's new Santa Monica location the day after their grand opening, and it was packed! We did have a bit of a wait, but it was absolutely worth it. The new location is on the smaller side, but it was great seeing so many familiar faces from the OG Khan Saab crew. It definitely seemed like they brought in their experienced team to make sure everything ran smoothly and customers were well taken care of during the opening rush. The staff was wonderful, as always! The food came out fresh and piping hot. We went with our usual favorites, the chicken karahi and chicken biryani, and both were flavorful and delicious. This was a great meal. All the dishes were really delicious and well portioned. The biriyani is a must order, it was a little spicy and very flavorful. The dessert we ordered was a recommendation of our server and was incredible. It was almost like tres leches but had a creamy topping and an incredible peach syrup over the top. Our server was very attentive and gave good recommendations. The inside and outside areas were both nice but the outside was under-decorated. The menu had an errors with allergen labels but we addressed it with them and they said they were going to fix it. Absolutely appalling service. Do not go here. We had an 8:00 p.m. reservation for my husband's 50th birthday and arrived at 7:50. The staff repeatedly sent us to wait at the bar across the street, promising to get us. By 9:30, they still had no table. When we asked how they planned to make this right, the staff became aggressive, shouted and swore at us, threatened to call the police, and threw us out. We were simply asking them to honor our reservation or offer a meaningful solution. Mistakes happen, but this response was inexcusable. Great new place. Simple, cute space. The menu is a nice size. No alcohol is served but they have an extensive list of mocktails and other non-alcoholic drinks. Loved the dumpling appetizer, the salmon curry and Brussels sprouts. The biryani was too spicy for me but the waiter warned me it was spicy so I'm still giving it 5 stars. Today, we had originally planned to go to a typical American seafood restaurant. On the way there, we saw someone eating curry, and the tempting aroma made us change our minds on the spot. We decided to try what we thought was an Indian restaurant instead. After sitting down and opening the menu, we realized it was actually a Pakistani restaurant. Their curries and naan bread were all excellent. The dish that the waiter recommended, which really blew us away, was called Thai Biryani 24. When it arrived, the pot was covered with a layer of pastry. As soon as they cut it open, the incredible aroma filled the air and instantly made our mouths water. If you don't eat spicy food, it's best to ask them to make it non-spicy. The appetizers tasted a bit like chicken nuggets but with authentic Pakistani flavors -- they were really delicious. The dessert, also recommended by the waiter, was Rasmalai Peach Rose Milk Cake. As someone who never orders dessert, I found it absolutely amazing and a perfect ending to the meal. We were first time visitors to this restaurant (and to any Khan Saab) but the reply from Natasha, the business manager, indicates that we have been there multiple times. She also writes: "We hope there's a chance we can make it up to you." She messaged me separately and asked me to get back to her as she wanted to hear more about our experience. I did contact her but no reply. It seems that her replies were pro forma. We like to visit restaurants during DineLA because it is a good way to try out a restaurant and restaurants hope to encourage return visitors. Our meal came to close to $90 (including tax) and our entrees consisted of 2 shrimp (for me) and 3 chunks of boneless lamb (for my husband). We did get sufficient rice and bread. This cost is comparable to what we have paid at other DineLA restaurants for excellent meals that were good value. It cost more than another great restaurant we will be visiting for a second time during DineLA week tomorrow. We have had six DineLA meals so far in the past couple of weeks and plan for two more in the final three days. Khan Saab stands out as a poor value outlier. I wanted to try this restaurant as I read that other Khan Saab's had been awarded a Bib Gourmand from Michelin. A Bib Gourmand is a prestigious award from the Michelin Guide that honors restaurants serving high-quality food at a great value. The meal we had falls so far short of this mark; it was truly disappointing. We don't mind spending money on restaurants but we expect a real entree when we spend close to $90. read more
