Nuggets we eat um with rice and Kimchee

It makes me happy to post this review. I'm a 70's baby. My youth was filled with picnics to Kailua beach with homemade musubi and KFC for lunch. I haven't enjoyed their chicken for the past 25 years as it seems to have been in decline for flavor, quality and a different recipe. Fast forward to this weekend, with the new building, and what looks like new staff, the chicken was ono! Still not the old recipe. I think, but ono for what it is now. The nuggets are winnahs!!!

Beyond Fried Chicken... What is it? My friends, Joyce in Arizona and Donna in Kailua, posted photos of this new plant based food option at Kentucky Fried Chicken. It looked interesting. Joyce noted that the square shaped pieces could have been thought out better from a marketing point of view. Donna said that the taste was quite good and that her mom even enjoyed them after the leftovers were heated up. Well... You can ask and wonder all you want. There's no substitute for trying it yourself, right? So, I decided to go to Donna's hometown of Kailua. It might be closer to me than Kalihi and possibly less traffic. Both places have free parking. The location in Kalihi might be crowded due to the proximity of schools. Kailua was a good choice. There was only one car ahead of me in the drive-through. The dining room is closed because of the pandemic. The parking lot was like a ghost town. The speaker system for ordering was broken, so, everyone orders at the window. I had ordered online, hoping for some kind of perk. I made an account and was offered a free chicken sandwich with a minimum $12 purchase - yay! I couldn't find Beyond Fried Chicken on the app, so, I ordered a chicken pot pie, mashed potatoes and Gravy, corn, biscuit, and a thigh (for comparison). When I got to the window, I ordered the Beyond Fried Chicken (six pieces for $8.99) and I asked for my online order. They didn't have it. I told them that I had paid already, so, the nice gal who called me "auntie", wrote down my order and efficiently gathered all of my items! She was pleasant and cheerful! I quickly drove home because the fragrance was torturing me. I guess I was rather famished... I took photos and dove in... Verdict: Beyond Fried Chicken - not bad! I ate the first piece without dipping sauce. The texture was firm enough to pass as chicken. The light batter on the outside provided enough crunch and flavor to make it a pretty good experience! I tried the barbecue sauce next...it was on the sweet side. I liked it! The ranch sauce... Not so much. Free Chicken Sandwich - yummy! The bread was nice and soft! The Mayo made it decadent. The pickles added some kick! The chicken was tender and flavorful! Pot Pie - I gobbled it up! It reminded me of when I was a little kid and our parents left us with babysitters when they went out... And they went out a lot - because they were so popular! Mom would let us choose either a TV dinner or Swanson's chicken/beef pot pie. Haha! Anyway - this chicken pot pie had chunks of real shredded chicken. The crust was nice and flaky! Delicious! The mashed potatoes and Gravy, corn, and biscuit (with buttery spread - like melted butter in a package) were normal comfort food basics. Nom nom nom! I couldn't get myself to eat the chicken thigh. The bones, veins, and knuckles are deterrents! LOL! I really don't like touching my food unless I have gloves on! Haha! So, there you have it! Those are my thoughts on Beyond Fried Chicken... And more! Let me know what you think! Go try it!

Be sure to call ahead, it usually takes ~30 min per order if you call. Takeout only. Service is very polite. Parking is tough because of the area but there are a few spots out front, would generally recommend calling ahead so parking is less stressful. Their menu was a little confusing to me so here is some explanation: K pop chicken- boneless chicken pieces K chicken wings- flats and drumettes (the two parts of a larger chicken wing) K chicken tenders- boneless tenders only K crispy chicken- full wings, thighs, and breast pieces They offer each of these items as a plate lunch too, with a smaller portion of chicken that comes with rice and salad. I personally like the K chicken wings for the variety and higher meat to skin ratio but my husband really likes the K chicken wings. The skin is shatteringly crispy and flavorful and the meat is juicy. Their honey shoyu sauce is the perfect balance of sweet and salty. You can also request the sauce on the side. I've also had the fried rice which was decent and generously portioned. We once had a complimentary house salad given to us which was unexpected kindness. Overall they do a great job serving up a delicious craveable food that keeps us coming back!

I heard that they're closed for summer break, but I also heard that they're close permanently. Regardless, if you place an order on an app, good luck getting that refund! It took me over an hour chatting with different Uber Eats customer service, escalating the issue, and I finally received the refund days later because I refused to let it go. The food itself was just okay, but my husband was a fan. I didn't think the fried chicken was anything remarkable. If you want decent Korean fried chicken, go the little spot inside Paloma food court.

Everything was very nice and fresh, fries were hot and crispy nothing really negative to say...just that it was boring for me personally and yes the order came rather fast making me think it was already made and kept warm didn't bother me the choices was very minimal and no other added flavors like hot and spicy or sauce options during this hot summer was made even on this National Fried Chicken Day.

The floral arrangements, the décor, the attention to detail... everything makes you feel like you're visiting an old friend. I feel like Odysseus finally making it home to Penelope. And then... THE FOOD. Omg. Everything is delicious. I've been here a few times now and they have never disappointed. I absolutely love the roast pork, but honestly, you can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Here's my completely unbiased (very biased) ranking: Petiscos - Kind of like a charcuterie board for bad bitches (i.e. me). 5/5 Sardines - 5/5. I use the sauce for everything. Cod Balls - 5/5. I would rub these on my face if I could. Bolo de Bolacha - Like tiramisu, but with experience. One of my favorites. Branzino - This fish is so soft and flavorful, and the salad it comes with is incredible. It takes a little longer to prepare, so order it first! Pistachio Rum Cake - Also one of my favorites. I genuinely can't choose. It's buttery, delightful, and just the right amount of sinful. Pastéis de Nata - A classic for a reason. The best custard tarts you'll ever have. I could eat one every morning with a cup of tea. Medeiros ʻOhana Celebration Cake - Chocolate. Cherry. Goodness. That's all I have to say. Arroz Doce - Think crème brûlée meets rice pudding. AMAZING. I've had it both warm and cold, and honestly, both are incredible. If you're looking for a dessert to take with you and eat in the car on the way home (because somehow you'll still have room), this is the one. Basically... just go. Bring friends, order way too much food, and thank me later. (I know i stopped rating the food when you go, you'll understand).

The menu has something for everyone, and the prices are surprisingly affordable. For some reason, I've always thought the takeout felt a little expensive, but dining in makes everything seem much more reasonably priced. Maybe it's just a mind trick! One thing I always appreciate is the service. The staff is consistently friendly, and I especially love that you're often greeted by a local aunty. It gives the restaurant a welcoming, hometown feel that makes the experience even better. My go-to order is usually the Korean Fried Chicken, which never disappoints. But on my most recent visit, a friend convinced me to try his all-time favorite: the spaghetti with chili. I had never even considered putting chili on pasta before, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It was absolutely delicious and easily one of the biggest surprises I've had at a restaurant. If you're stopping by Zippy's, don't be afraid to order something outside your comfort zone. The spaghetti with chili is an underrated gem that's definitely worth trying. I noticed a while ago that they introduced one called firecracker karaage chicken, so that was what I ordered for lunch. I typically use the app for speed and convenience. Just a few clicks, and I was on my way. They usually send a text message when the order is ready, but I didn't get one so I just drove up to the drive-thru, rand the buzzer, and "wallah", my order was ready. The taste and texture wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I would consider karaage, or "firecracker", either. The description in the app said "boneless fried chicken mixed with housemade sauce... topped with spicy mayo sauce". Well, I'll admit, that describes it, but it's just not karaage, and the sauce wasn't that spicy. It tasted like their Korean fried chicken topped with buffalo sauce mixed with mayo. I was expecting the chicken to be "lighter", since traditional karaage doesn't use a batter, and perhaps more of a Sriracha style spicy sauce. Like I said, not bad, just not spicy karaage. The service is always fast and the food and value is good, so I'll keep trying anything new... and hoping.
