Since I've been coming to "Zips" for decades, I'm always curious to try their new dishes whenever they come out with one. I noticed a while ago that they introduced one called firecracker karaage chicken, so that was what I ordered for lunch. I typically use the app for speed and convenience. Just a few clicks, and I was on my way. They usually send a text message when the order is ready, but I didn't get one so I just drove up to the drive-thru, rand the buzzer, and "wallah", my order was ready. The taste and texture wasn't bad, but it wasn't what I would consider karaage, or "firecracker", either. The description in the app said "boneless fried chicken mixed with housemade sauce... topped with spicy mayo sauce". Well, I'll admit, that describes it, but it's just not karaage, and the sauce wasn't that spicy. It tasted like their Korean fried chicken topped with buffalo sauce mixed with mayo. I was expecting the chicken to be "lighter", since traditional karaage doesn't use a batter, and perhaps more of a Sriracha style spicy sauce. Like I said, not bad, just not spicy karaage. The service is always fast and the food and value is good, so I'll keep trying anything new... and hoping. read more

Zippy's is a Hawaii staple, and if you're visiting the islands, it's definitely a place you should experience at least once. I had never even considered putting chili on pasta before, but I'm so glad I gave it a chance. It was absolutely delicious and easily one of the biggest surprises I've had at a restaurant. This location parking is okay. I'm glad they have drive thru pick up since I do a lot mobile order and pick up through the drive thru especially if there's no parking. When I order Keiki meals, maybe one time I got the paper for the token and two times got the toy capsules. All the other times, nothing would be given so it's sad they are not consistent in giving. I do go inside the fast food side at times, if I haven't decided what I wanted. The bakery displays are on the smaller side and by the early evening, most of the good bake goods are sold already. There's a lot tables inside on the fast food area. It brings back memories of my parents and my mom's siblings would meet for breakfast and stay until lunch time. Not too many family restaurants and fast food dining in Kailua. The prices are less on the fast food counter side than the dining in prices at the restaurant with their kitchen fees. You can only get the clubhouse from the restaurant side and you can do a take out, but have to order it from the restaurant's side. We have been dining inside most time and at times it's not as crowded at all when you go during a non busy hour. The air conditioning is actually really cold and you may need to bring a jacket. Recently the air conditioning wasn't working so it was hard to bear. The great waitresses here made me want to dine in more. They are all nice but our favorite is Sue short for Susan. She works 3x a week and she always friendly and remembers your name, & to ask you for your phone number for your zipster rewards! She always updates us on your points or any rewards to use. Excellent service from Sue and she made sure we are happy with our food. One time my clubhouse sandwich had limply bacon and green tomatoes. She made sure the bacon was crispy instead of soft and limply. Another benefit in dining in, is you can order some breakfast items all day. I Don't forget to sign up with their Zipsters reward program. It's worth it. Just make sure you use the points before it expires! You can see in your Zippy's app that not every location cost the same for the same dish. Kailua's prices seem to be less than the town Zippy's. read more

I would give NO stars if it was just based on their advertised golden fried chicken. However, the chili rice with onions was good and their warm macaroni salad not good. The macaroni salad should be chilled. It hasn't mattered that ordering fresh from the dining side, counter or delivery. Their chicken is usually burnt, dry or refried in oil just so it warm or hot. This zippys has the WORST fried chicken. I have no idea why they keep doing this. read more

I think I've been to Zippy's three times already since I moved to Hawaii. I've fallen in love with this diner. The last time I came I tried the oxtail soup. It was very good so I tried it for the second time along with their Korean fried chicken. On my most recent visit, I finally tried the famous Zip Pac... and wow. I don't usually go for fish, but I actually loved it. That's because I'm not a fish person. Their bakery goods are always delicious. Their salad was very fresh and crispy. Unpictured but I actually tried two other pastries which was a mango cake and a flaky dessert that had fruit compote in it. Be careful and make sure you pick up your food on time. I forgot i ordered my food and got there very late. They told me that they throw away the food after 40 minutes. I told them it was my fault but I should get my money back cos I didn't get any food. The Manager told me that she will look into it and call me...she never did. I called the Office and the lady was rude. The charge went thru and I am disputing it. I love the convenience of going to the drive thru but their customer service sucks. I had the Korean chicken and it was pretty good. They have an extensive menu and some other things I'll probably come back and try. The location is good and the staff is very friendly. It's hard to give any fast food spot more than 3 stars because of how it's all just mass production. I enjoy all fast food but it has to be exceptional to get more than 3 stars. This is my first time at Zippys. I love the ambience and that it seems to be a local favorite in HI. I was very pleased with the loco moco and it was delicious and filling. Also ordered the April special of miso chicken salad. Although it tasted ok, it was such a tiny portion of chicken. I believe there were 5 pieces of chicken that weighed around 3-4 ounces at the most in total. The service was great. Staff was all smiles. The soda is ridiculously overpriced. read more

On Saturday, March 22, 2025, my daughter and I walked in to the dine-in side of Zippy's Kailua. Within 30 seconds of entering the most positive Aunty wearing a mask welcomed us positively, smiling with her big happy eyes and energetic tone. We were escorted to a window table (we were early and beat the Saturday night rush), being the second guests for the dinner shift. The restaurant was clean, set and all tables consistently prepared. Within a minute of seating another energetic, positive and warm greeting by our server took place. Her name tag indicated Sue, so my daughter and I affectionately and respectfully addressed her as Aunty Sue. She was the quintessential, genuine, kind and plenty of aloha Aunty Zippy's has been known for. She was full of confidence, hospitality, joviality and articulate in classic pidgin!!! We loved it! And we hadn't even ordered yet! She brought out our hot tea, took our order listening intently, repeating back what we asked for and commended us on all items chosen. My daughter had been craving their oxtail soup, fondly remembering her papa always eating that. So ordering it brought good feelings of nostalgia (now that her papa is passed). She also ordered spaghetti w/garlic bread. I ordered won-ton min, which reminded me of my mom, who is very much still with us but living on the west coast. I also ordered the teriyaki bun sandwich. Our food came out within 10 minutes! The Oxtail came with minced ginger, my won-ton min came with hot mustard. My daughter took her first spoonfuls of the oxtail and exclaimed, "This is soup for my soul!" She was in food Heaven equally thrilled about her spaghetti (the noodles made perfectly soft to her liking). Knowing that we ordered big, Aunty Sue intuitively brought a couple to-go containers in a bag conveniently displayed at the end of our table. Her table maintenance was impeccable, checked in on us often, and even though we were full, knew to ask about dessert (because we always have space in our dessert stomach ). I had asked if they still had their classic jello parfait, she said yes, which knowing my daughter was in a food coma, immediately offered to make it to-go. I have been working in luxury hospitality for almost 30 years and found Aunty Sue's service to be exceptional; warm, friendly, genuine, anticipatory, efficient, detail oriented and kind. Free Zip Pac from the new Zippy's app! I was in Kailua, O'ahu, Hawaii when I realized that I should purchase something from Zippy's to get the free Zip Pac. I had tried to make the transaction earlier in the month, but there was a glitch in the new system. I was asked to scan my receipt later when the app would be running more smoothly, but time passed and I forgot. Somehow I remembered that I should get going since it was 9-29-22 - one day before the deadline for the free Zip Pac with any purchase on the app. Haha! The nearest Zippy's at the time was this Kailua location. Parking was a bit tight in the small free parking lot. The interior was cozy and clean. I went to the cashier to get assistance and ordered my usual Large Chili and Brown Rice with Cheese and Onion topping. The cashier informed me that I would have to click on the "Rewards" tab on the app tomorrow (9-30-22) to get the free Zip Pac. LOL! Chili & Chicken Mixed Plate - 3/5 Normally, when I order this dish, the fried chicken is tasty and tender. This time, the chicken was over cooked, hard and dry. I told our waitress and she apologized and brought another set of chicken thighs to replace the ordinal. The replacement fried chicken thighs were not that much better. This was the first time we had ever stepped in to a Zippy's despite it being a super local establishment. We wanted to try the food out ourselves as we heard they have local comfort food.. it did not disappoint. It's not the most cost-friendly place even though it's a "fast food" joint, I love the array of foods they offer. Their locations are all around the island and they even have some foods sold in Costco too. The Kailua location is big as they have a huge dining area. Sharma our server explained that the process of using the app. was new to her. I told her that it was a learning experience for us too. It's been YEARS since I've been to Zippy's but I finally was craving chili so I placed an online order for pick up. The small chili and rice for almost $7 is the small portion, mostly rice, which was a huge disappointment. The surf pack was a great deal personally. The teri beef was great with flavor and the chicken was ok.. a little dry for my taste. Other bummer was the bakery or lack there of. Maybe after covid baked goods we not popular but the case was 4-5 times the size of the tiny case they had at this location. The service at the location is fine. I am not happy with the food experience. While Zippy's expands to other states, it seems the quality of their food continues to disappoint. It's bad enough the prices are high and they charge a kitchen fee but the food isn't even enjoyable anymore. Ordered a zip pac and everything was so dry it was hard to swallow. The Teri beef had no sauce, the spam was fried dry and the rice was extremely dry! The chicken was undercooked also. Chili was decent but tastes no better than the frozen version. I'm a local and want to support local but I also want the local company to support local people as well and know that in order for this to be win/win for both sides, they need to keep quality consistent. read more

First time in Paradise and I landed on Friday all I said was I wanted to go to Zippy's tried there bakery for a quick snack and the ensaymada was to die for. Finally got to have lunch after a beautiful day at the beach and it was fantastic food was delicious and their customer service was great. It was so good and the pricing was amazing it was affordable compared to the fancy restaurants in the area. Will go back to paradise can't wait !!! read more

If you see the Mushroom Chicken special on the menu and are thinking of two juicy baked thighs with mushrooms and gravy..... It's not. Sadly this is more like a goulash and not what I had in my mind. The chicken pieces were more shredded and it seemed I could taste more mushrooms than I could chicken. Overall a very unsatisfying meal, will not order again. Is it me or is the Mac salad different now? I remember it being a thicker consistency, lately it seems to be a "wetter" consistency that doesn't hold together like it used to. read more
