    As packaged, and as extolled!

KFC recently introduced their version, on a national scale, of the regionally famous "Nashville Hot Chicken". This chicken recipe dates back to the 1930's when it was "developed" by the Prince family of Nashville, and has been refined, copied, added to, and subtracted from, over the years, and there are probably as many variations as there are restaurants offering this chicken. The best known restaurant that serves this chicken is Prince's Hot Chicken (a place I've eaten at more than a few times), though there are many others, and it is no longer found just in the Nashville area. The general approach is to marinate the chicken in buttermilk, bread it, pan fry it, and apply a spice paste after it comes out of the pan. Traditionally, the paste is composed of lard and cayenne pepper, which is fried until a thick sauce is formed. This chicken is typically crusty, hot, wet, and greasy, and it is generally served on slices of white bread, with pickle chips. I tried the 2 piece dark meat basket, which comes with a biscuit, slaw, and pickle slices, at a cost of $5.49. This is not a bad version, not bad at all - and it is hot, wet, and greasy, very greasy. This will not be everyone's choice, but if you like some heat in your chicken, and don't mind a little bit of a messy meal, you mind find this chicken interesting.

We had a short window of time to grab lunch so I needed a place that was quick, delicious, with a twist of fun. Insert Yelpers. You did not disappoint! We arrived at Scratch around 1:45pm. We were waited on immediately but we were not ready. They patiently waited as we looked at the menu and decided then undecided then decided. There were so many possibilities that we were intentionally making each other get different dishes. Once we ordered, we sat at the table and enjoyed talking and watching soccer. The large windows made me feel like I was sitting on an indoor patio. The food arrived about 10-15 minutes after we ordered. Here's what we had: Cajun Seafood egg rolls - I could taste the seafood and the Cajun flavor but the texture was too pasty for me. Crispy Wings with fries scratch sauce - It was flavorful and definitely crispy. Tender and waffle sticks - My son loved the waffle sticks. Chicken n waffles - My sister said her chicken was juicy and crispy and her waffle was amazing. Overall the food and the customer service left us feeling like we made a good choice. This is definitely a great spot for all the chicken lovers out there.

Even though I placed my order at the kiosk, in every interaction I had with the service team they tried to go above and beyond to make sure I enjoyed my experience. The food was amazing too. The chicken sauce was also really good. I liked the sando, but it was a little too much bread for me. Will probably take off a bun next time I get it.

Every employee we talked to was so nice and helpful. I really appreciated the customer service there. They were happy to bring out our food and get us extra sauce, water cups, etc. The inside was also really clean. A lot of people ordered food to go but there's also plenty of space to sit. They serve agua frescas and soft drinks. I ordered the 12 piece combo. They let me try both half fried and half grilled chicken. I chose 1 order of sweet plantains and 2 orders of yuca fries for my 3 sides. Also I was given some dinner bread rolls. The fried chicken has a distinct taste;it was savory and citrusy. There was a crunch to it but not as crispy as the other fried chicken chains and is less greasy. The fried chicken is seasoned with cumin, lime, paprika and cayenne peppers. The grilled chicken tasted super zesty ( heavy flavors of lime/oregano). The plantains is super sweet but soooo yummy!! I enjoyed the yuca fries as well( tasted like sweet fried thick cut potatoes). They carry the Cholula brand hot sauce and not texas pete like most places do. There is a good amount of seatings outdoor with umbrellas and indoor seating. They do catering too. I went on a Friday afternoon and it was not busy. There were many tables filled with family eating lunch. It was quiet. Staff is quick to greet and service. I prefer the grilled chicken over the fried chicken. The fried chicken is good but wasnt too fond of the seasonings and it was a bit dry. I love the side orders, there so delicous. I watched her wash her hands, put on two clean gloves and made a few orders before making mind. The young man needed her assistance at the counter. She with her knuckles punched the register while talking/ holding the walkie talkie to take drive through orders. When she made me order I informed her that I requested two clean gloves. She got hostile and upset informing me that she washed her hands. I explained my concern was the gloves. She kept saying she did not touch said items. She blew me off and asked for more dippers because she had to throw the others away. She kept taking under her breath to where I just asked for a refund. She hurried up, with the gloves on printed off a refund receipt for me then went back to making orders with the same gloves on. All food places need extra training in when can happen by over unsung the same gloves, over and over. I know it was busy being that it was NCA&T homecoming. I was visiting from Oklahoma. Left embarrassed being that the place was packed!

They give me what I think is the correct order, only to check my sandwich and they forgot the bacon. I ripped the bag open that the sandwich was in to check it. 4 - oh I'm not done yet y'all. The lady adds bacon to the same sandwich and hands it to me in the old wrapper that I ripped in half. As I told the manager, when you fix someone's food, you should never give it back to them in the same old wrapper. There should have been a fresh bag. The complaints I have are truly endless. I could write a good 5 pages worth of complaints about this hellhole, but I think you all get the point. Needless to say, I will NOT be returning to this location and I'm telling all of you, my family, as well as my friends to NEVER go to this location EVER. Do NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY$$$$. I pray that they are shut down.

Unfortunately the food looked way better than it tasted. The presentation is very messy and the portions are really small. The chicken was hard and over cooked and the sauce went all over the sides. I started with a Cajun Martini made with jalapeño-infused vodka, and it was exactly what I hoped it would be. It did not taste artificially jalapeño-flavored; it had a real kick and just the right amount of heat. We started with the Crawfish Rangoon Dip, and honestly, I could have made a meal out of it. I have had Rangoon dips before, but this one was especially smooth and full of flavor. If I had been at home, I probably would have been tempted to run my finger around the bowl to get every last bit. For my entrée, I had the Shrimp Étouffée. Others at the table ordered the Duck Jambalaya, Shrimp and Grits, and Gumbo Yaya. My dish seemed to get better with every bite. The Creole stew was rich and deeply flavorful without being over the top. I was especially glad our waitress suggested adding a side of garlic bread to mop up the sauce. Even the garlic bread stood out, toasted on the grill with a slightly smoky flavor. It felt like real attention had been paid to every detail. We all tried each other's dishes, and I would happily go back and order any one of them. The banana pudding at the end of the meal was just as good. It had a strong banana flavor and was not overly sweet. Our servers were friendly and attentive, and the meal moved at a relaxed pace. We never felt rushed. My only complaint was the noise level. The restaurant has a tiled ceiling, and it got loud enough that at times, it was difficult to hear people on the other side of the table. Even with that, I would go back to Blue Denim!

The crawfish rangoon dip was delightfully cheesy with large pieces of crawfish, the chili sauce was sweet and had a tiny bit of heat, and I loved the crisp and light wonton chips. The shrimp and grits were almost as delicious as I remembered from my visit years ago. There is a moderate amount of cajun spices, so if you don't like somewhat spicy food, you may want to ask to see if they can adjust this, but I loved it as is. My husband had the King Catfish plate and really enjoyed it, though we both agreed the Shrimp and Grits was superior. My only complaint with Blue Denim is the noise level. It is a small space with a charming interior, but given its tight quarters, it can get quite loud even if the restaurant is only half full. I'm not sure how they would go about fixing this, but if the weather is nice (as it was in this latest visit) I will opt to eat at one of their outdoor tables.
