Five stars to Kyle at Keylo Locksmith. Needed a replacement key for my 2006 Honda Civic. Started with my local Honda dealer here in San Carlos. I have driven Honda cars since my first Accord in 1979. Love these cars but when I was told that a replacement key cost $580 i was a little...unhappy(?)! I only had one key for this vehicle so I was looking for a repair [fob housing was broken but key and electronic insides were fine] Parts department at Honda for the two was $1,100+. But truly - Keylo is THE locksmith on the Peninsula. They have recently moved locations and are now in San Mateo, just past Hillsdale Mall. Klye is running the show these day, he's not always in office because he goes out in the field to change locks etc. I've never had trouble with a key made at Keylo - and being a Realtor - a functioning door key is super important. Very impressed with Kyle. I had a broken sliding glass door lock, called Kyle on the Saturday asking if he could come by on the Monday. He came at 9 AM on the dot, and had the lock fixed in about 30 minutes. Keylo Locksmith used to be in San Carlos, and was started by Kyle's grandfather. It's a 'one man show' now, and Kyle is the man. If you want to pop by to have keys cut etc. it's a good idea to call first, just to check if Kyle's there or out on a job. UPDATE: It's been almost comical today. Posted hours say open at 8:30am. I show up at 9:10am. The lights are out, and Keylo is closed. Fine. So I come back 2 hours later, at 11:00am. The lights are on, but now there is a sign saying they'll be back at 1:00pm-1:30pm. What? I can't believe it's so difficult to do business here. I'm trying, really, I'm trying to keep my business in San Carlos. Please help! ------- I have visited this store at least 4 times during the "opening hours" (posted on door as well as online), only to find the store closed. A couple of times there is a note posted saying "Be back in X min." But today there was no note or anything. This is extremely frustrating as I take time off MY work and out of MY paycheck to visit Keylo. If Keylo wants to have shortened work days so that they can do offsite work or whatever, why not post hours as such, like "Open M-F, 9am-11am and 2pm-4pm." Or "Open Mon, Wed, Fri 9a-5p only." I will happily change this rating to 5 stars if my suggestion (or alternative suggestion) is adopted so that we can have a more mutually beneficial customer/retailer relationship. I went to Keylo Locksmith five times during their posted hours, and every single time the place was closed. In two cases, there was a note on the door; in others, nothing. In one case I waited thirty minutes, and another customer came by but did not wait. In another case I went there twice in the same day, forty minutes apart, and no one was there either time. So, five strikes and you're out. I went to Lockworks Unlimited on El Camino in Redwood City (even though I live in San Carlos) and got prompt and courteous service. Amazing key maker with old-world charm and ethics. I went in to get one of my keys duplicated. They had the granddad and the grandson working at the store - both supremely affable. The grandson helped me duplicate the keys. I go back and try the keys out an home, they do not work well. I take them back, the grandfather realizes that the machine these were made was not precise enough, tells this to his grandson so that he can learn which keys to duplicate where and then promptly makes me two keys which work flawlessly. I love this local mom-and-pop joint any day with its personal touch rather than the big box retailers who can churn out duplicate keys without any charm and competence. read more

We took about 8-10 NEW door locks there to have them re- key them. When we went to pick them up the owner was really rude when my husband pointed out he put one of the locks back in upside down. When we asked if we could have him put it back correctly, he got very rude and said we brought it in that way and would not fix it! We ened up going to San Mateo Locks and they were awesome and we even had them come to our home to install hinges and other locks and they did great. Stopped by to get copies of our new airplane's keys. We were helped right away and they had it done within about 10 minutes. One of the keys was complicated and they had never seen it before, but they managed to make the copy work. (they offered to fix it for free if it didn't). Would highly recommend. I went in to get copies of an ignition/door key for a 1971 Cadillac. Not your average request! Kyle spent a lot of time trying to get the right fit, and after a couple of tries, found the right keys. Kyle and his father did a great job swapping out 7 locks in my house/garage to unify on one key and also added securing latches to three gates to allow padlocks to be used on either side (to allow gardener access). I really wanted to get them to fix the keyed ignition switch for my car. I popped over at 12 only to find a tag on the door that said they were out and would return at 12:45 - no big deal. When I came back at 12:45, still locked up and sign in the window. At about 1, I texted Kyle at the number on the sign to see when they would be back - no response.
