Stopped by again and they indeed improved the Mac & Cheese recipe. Cheesier and seemed to have larger crab chunks. Fish was still excellent. Good, flaky cod. Tarter seems a little heavy on the dill. Minus one star because the guy working (possibly a co-owner?) was not wearing a mask, even when working the register and being within a couple feet of customers. Science says masks work. They're not about protecting the wearer, they're about protecting others from the wearer and reducing virus particle load in enclosed spaces, like a restaurant. I am largely vegetarian and only at long intervals crave a bit of fish. I usually get it at a good seafood restaurant where no fish died in vain. But being very hungry and having only twenty dollars one me, I thought, I'll settle for fish n chips! The cod and french fries were fresh, nicely cooked. Cod is never flavorful, so only as good as the thin breading and the tartar sauce, which weren't bad at all. They make the fries right too. I may or may not ever drop in again; it's in my way when going to the dentist, but if I can afford it I'd rather have something fancier. And since Kettlefish took my entire twenty it's not like a bargain or anything. They also serve shrimp, clams, clam chowder, stuff I never eat. If it's as good as the cod it'll be as perfect as bland food ever gets. read more

This was such a lucky find! We had the wonderful opportunity to meet the owners Dave and Patty and had an amazing experience all around! Staff was charming the minute you walked in the door, food was fantastic and the story made it all come together! We started with chowder and are picky for sure! It was great, lots of clam and clam taste, nice and thick and a solid all around good flavor! Also tried the cod, clam strips and steamed clams and mussels! All GREAT! Kettlefish popped up on my radar since they're going to be opening a location in downtown Gig Harbor this Spring (in the old Kelly's building) so I was excited to try this location here in Silverdale as we were passing through on our way home. I love seafood and prefer places where you can walk in to order at the counter, pay and they bring the food to your table. Checked in on yelp for a free clam chowder which was very tasty. Highly recommended. Crab Mac and Cheese was just alright, real Dungeness but could've been higher quality. It lacked in flavor but the bottom of the bowl was cheesier and more appetizing. We also thought the Cioppino stew could've been more flavorful but I will say that the shrimp I tried out of it was of great quality. I can't say the same when it came to the fried cod, it just wasn't good at all and doesn't make me want to try anything else that's fried here. There's definitely room for improvement but we're looking forward to trying some other items on the menu once they open up in the harbor. 3 stars for food. 5 stars for cleanliness, convenience and excellent service! read more

No - There are too many other great fish and chips places for this type of fish and chips to compete. My husband got the 2 piece cod - and it had terrible breading. Definitely not worth the price. No tarter sauce came with the fish and chips. The first condiment cup of tarter cost an extra .50. It was weird with a grainy texture like it curdled or broke during the mixing process. The clam chowder tasted ok - but again the texture was weird. Like the milk had not been tempered properly during the cooking process. The Pan Roast stew - the seafood in it was really good. The sauce???? I watched it being made in the steam kettle. It was a cooked cocktail sauce (ketchup, Worcestershire, horseradish) which seafood was added to. When the seafood was almost cooked a small bowl of cream (dairy of some sort) was mixed in. It was odd. It tasted just like I described - cooked cocktail sauce with cream and seafood. Stopped in yesterday for lunch with friend for 1st time. Parking in back and on the street with outdoor seating. Staff were great, asked about portion size for cod and cashier went and asked cook, who was busy but took the time to show us (~3 oz). I had the fisherman's platter with pint of rotating local brewery and friend had 1 pc cod n chips. Both WERE EXCELLENT!!! I couldn't say enuff about how fresh the shrimp were and both of us about the cod, wasn't dry at all, I even said this place puts Ivar's to shame and OMG not to mention homemade tartar sauce!! Staff came out and asked how everything was as he bussed our table (bus your own place), told him my 1st time there and will NOT be my last, even tho I don't live there. I appreciated the efforts at reducing plastics for in house service (I wonder if they could find an alternative for the plastic condiment cups?). I immediately take off one star for having one of those systems that requires you to pay up front AND offer a tip before you eat the food or receive any kind of service. This is not to be confused with the quick register transaction at a typical fast-food place; those places don't ask for tips, even though most will bring your food to your table, as well. I'm taking off another three stars because I was mislead and because of the disturbing way they handled it. The menu board says they have bowls of clam chowder for $5.50. I asked the young guy behind the counter, "You have bowls of clam chowder; do you also have cups?" He turned to the shelves behind him and showed me a cup (small bowl, maybe 6 to 8 ounces) and said "We have these, if this is what you'd like." I said "Yes." He rung up the order and I signed (no tip) and indicated I wanted a printed receipt - the price sounded too high for the two "cups" of clam chowder along with the platter and two drinks. I quickly looked at the receipt and noticed they had charged me for two bowls. I mentioned it to him and he confusingly said that's all they had. I said "I understand what you're saying but you gave me the impression that you had cups." Certainly they don't think that 6-ounce bowls can be accepted by diners as anything more than cups. He was confused. At this point I'm thinking he doesn't hear me; there's an odd buzz in this small restaurant (only two tables and a window counter inside). So I spoke more slowly, more clearly and a little less quietly. A big fellow came around from the back of the counter to explain to me that that is all they have. Again, I explained that he, the young guy behind the counter, told me these were "cups." The young guy behind the counter quickly runs off. The big guy tries again to tell me "that's all they have." And I told him "I understand what YOU'RE saying BUT what I'm saying is that the young guy told me these were cups." The young guy comes back with who I assume is the manager. She tells me "That's all they have." Again? I explain to her "He told me....", and you get the idea. She asks if she should take the bowls/cups away (they hadn't been filled yet). Not whether she should charge me less for such small bowls or any such fix. I wanted to try their chowder so I gave in to the bowl price. I said "No, I'll wait for our order, we'll eat dinner and we'll go." By the way, did that big guy come around the counter to make sure I wasn't some crazy mad customer who just might get out of hand? That's a good way to intimidate any other customer. When the young guy delivered the food, he apologized for "misleading" me on the cup/bowl. Big kudos to him. No apologies from the manager. So, the food... The cup of chowder ... oops ... the bowl of chowder was good. Not great. A good amount of clam, a decent amount of potato, some herbs and a good consistency to the broth (not overly wall-paper-pastey found in too many chowder places). But it lacked real depth and character. The Captain's Platter, a sampling of their deep-fried foods, included one thin piece of cod, two shrimp, an oyster, some clam strips and fries. The cod was moist and tasty but its breading was flat in texture and flavor. The shrimp was good. The clam strips were made up of about ¼ to 1/3 flour crumbs with no clam inside or so little clam it wasn't discernible. The rest were standard small clam strips, a little heavy on the breading. My wife ate the oyster. Some of the fries were cooked well but some were limp. How does that happen? I'm not a fan of breading on the fish (or other seafood) in fish and chips; I'd rather have a crispy tempura-like batter coating. So the platter, two cups of chowder and two drinks come to $33.80. I'm glad I didn't add a tip. Overpriced? I think so. Way overpriced for a fast-food concept and way over-priced for its food quality. read more

First off let me say that my fried oysters were the best I have eaten. That being said, this was not a terrific dinner. We must have come in right when they were closing, because when we ordered (fried oysters and chips and fried prawns and chips, cole slaw and two fountain drinks) we were asked if we were getting these to go... and I answered, no, we would eat here, the counter person gave me a look that would have withered steel. But, ok, she took our order and we sat and waited, the only people in the place. The food came quickly. Fries were good, but the cole slaw was tasteless, really just mayo and cabbage. We recently moved into the area and were lucky enough to find Kettlefish very quickly. We typically get clam chowder, fish and chips, and/or cioppino. All are excellent, but the great thing about Kettlefish's approach is that we can get extra clams (instead of the usual mussels) in our cioppino. That rocks! We are new to the area and have driven by Kettlefish a few time and wanted to stop there. After a quick side trip, my wife and I decided to stop here yesterday. We both order the fish and chips ( I ordered the 2 piece, and she the 1pc) and also ordered the crab Mac and cheese to share. The staff was friendly and the fish and chips were really good. The Crab Mac & Cheese was not. The Mac and cheese itself was very basic and had no consistency, and very little flavor, and then shredded crab was thrown on top. At $18 I would expect bigger pieces of crab and more effort put into the Mac & Cheese recipe. I've had better Mac & Cheese from a box. You bus your own tables and as we were leaving we noticed that all the tables inside were dirty. There was really no excuse for this as there were 2 workers and they were not busy. Yummy fresh seafood. My partner and I both got the captains platter (comes w/ one piece of fish, clam strips, 2 shrimps, and an oyster. And a basket of fries). Fried perfectly, not dried out. We also ordered clam chowder. I've seen reviews stating there wasn't enough clams, but our cup had a decent amount. Go To Place for Seafood Stews! I have now dined here three times, and specifically came each time to try the signature items; Ciopinno, Bouillabaisse, and Pan Roast. Verdict, Ciopinno is my favorite. I learned of the restaurant through a story in the Kitsap Sun, and immediately related the steam cooking technique for stews to a favorite oyster bar in Las Vegas, that used the same made-to-order, single portion, food preparation. I cannot comment on the fried fish, but if you are a fan of seafood stews, this is the place to come! Suggestion for Management: Since all the seafood stews are cooked-to-order, consider offering different spice options; like Cajun, Garlic, etc. That would truly customize the food experience. read more

First timer. Last timer. I ordered the crab mac n' cheese and a piece of battered cod. It was over $25. Both smell and taste of crap vegetable/soy oil. The crab over the mac n' cheese was probably a total of two loose tablespoons of crab shred/sprinkles. The cod was about 4x3 inches, the bulk of which was batter. The tarter sauce, again, tasted like that crap oil. What can I say? After getting the Rona in 2021, I was blessed with an aversion to low quality foods. Before the Rona, I never noticed the gross oil in restaurant foods. Since my sense of taste and smell was affected, I can only cook for myself with good olive, avo, coconut oils - since all restaurants seem to use this crap oil. In sum - ridiculously expensive for the quantity of seafood, and their oil messes up everything. The fella who took my order was quite nice, though. read more
